    "The End" is about as bizarre and also as fascinating as anything else in rock music. L.A. WOMAN is my favorite of their albums, even though Jim's voice was more ragged then. "Light My Fire," the long version is one of THE classic rock songs of all-time. It's a legendary track for a reason.

  • @otisdylan9532
    @otisdylan9532 Год назад +18

    Your next Doors album should be either Strange Days or L.A. Woman. They're about equally good. Strange Days is next chronologically, so maybe do it next for that reason. If you like long story telling songs, you should check out Bob Dylan. Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde are his 2 best albums.

  • @jonathanlocke6404
    @jonathanlocke6404 Год назад +11

    It should be noted that this is a remastered version of the album that contains some significant departures from the original 1967 version, most of which, I think, were meant to convey how the band would have released it, if they had had more control of what could and could not be "said" when it was recorded...For example, on "Break on Through", the line was just "She get", not "she gets high"...They literally just edited out the word "high". For "The End", I can't remember if the "fucks" were actually still there, just buried way down, but they were certainly at least nearly inaudible. I don't remember ever hearing them until this version. They were still pushing a lot of boundaries for the time, but some boundaries remained for a while longer...

    • @SatWiseJanx
      @SatWiseJanx Год назад

      Great point. All the "fuck, fucks" during the crescendo of The End wasn't on the original. The record company even edited the song Break On Through on the original - the line "She gets high" was simply "She gets". And during the song The End when he sings, "Mother, I want to fuck ya!", he contorted the scream so it wasn't recognized as the word itself.

    • @goldbug7127
      @goldbug7127 Год назад

      I been trying to figure out what was going on. I play the vinyl albums that I bought in the 70's and I noticed the changes. I don't like it. Our society has to quit fixing history. It's noteworthy that Morrison couldn't break that boundary. Rock and Roll had broken so many boundaries. This was 1967. Bobby Kenndy and King were still alive and Ali was champion of the world. Two years later none of that was true. Tricky Dick was in the White House. Morrison was arrested, Doors concerts were cancelled and the radio wouldn't play their songs. This is an important distinction. This version gives the impression that Morrison or anyone could sing these phrases in 1967, Actually it was astounding that he got as far as he did. And he got cancelled for it. And maybe murdered. And we're still cancelling people. By changing history, we lose the tools to figure out what we have become. Jimmy was very political and I think he would agree with me. Open your Doors of Perception.

    • @jonathanlocke6404
      @jonathanlocke6404 Год назад +1

      @@goldbug7127 Well, I appreciate the passion. but let's not equate the release of an alternate version of an album to "society fixing history"...I remember when this version was released, and it was with the blessing and participatory promotion of the remaining band members, and the reasons for releasing it were made clear. It actually provides a fuller picture of history, because this is how the band wanted it to sound at the time. This is not any different than McCartney releasing that different mix of "Let It Be" because he never liked the way the original sounded, or Roger Waters releasing different versions of the "Dark Side" material, just because he can. Remixes and rereleases and remasters have been very common since the advent of digital recording. It's not going anywhere. And if you asked Jim: "Do you want this version with all the fucks in it to be released? Or should we keep it to ourselves because they didn't let us do it in 1967?", I'm pretty sure he'd go for the fucks...

    I wish more people your age understood about listening to whole albums. It wasn't until your generation (and the internet) that it became all about playlists. They're missing out on so much. We listened to whole albums, partially because we would buy the physical album and wanted to get our money's worth. This caused us to discover tons of songs we would have never heard. Some we didn't think we liked at first but after several listens we grew to love. Albums expanded our tastes and horizons. I firmly believe that singles and playlists are why music has become so generic and predictable today.

    I think in the original version of The End he says mother I want to f*ck you. When they played it live for the first time at the Whisky a Go-Go (when they were the house band there) the owner was appalled by it and he threw them out and fired them but there was a guy from Electra Records there for the show and he offered them a record contract so all was good lol

      Yep, it was a definitively Oedipedic fantasy referencing Morrison's family. He had a sister and brother, as well as a serious challenge to authority including his Naval Officer father. So as he "walked on down the hall" it is thinly veiled message of rebellion with a Greek Tragedy twist. That's my take, at least.

  • @majkus
    @majkus Год назад +3

    Back in the day of LP albums, the producers and artists often arranged the songs in the expectation that the entire album would be heard at once, not just as a collection of songs. The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album is one example of this, and I think the Doors album is another (see also Simon and Garfunkle's 'Bookends' album, though only the 'A' side was really programmatically arranged). And most albums were distributed with the lyrics on the back of the sleeve or a paper insert, and these would be passed around while the album was playing. Such albums were much more than 'just songs' listened to in the gym as background. There are advantages and disadvantages to every technology, of course, but I think that the demise of the integral album as an art form is a sad side-effect of the demise of vinyl.

      I agrre 100%. At that time there were many new innovative albums and there was not enough money to buy them all. So we organize private "little happenings" on Friday or Saturday evening to listen to and discuss the new album together.
      Recently I got upset by an otherwise well-respected reactor who slammed a Led Zeppelin song by III (today, a song seems to be good or bad on first hearing). Sure, I leave it up to everyone what they think of it. However, I always found the song to be a break, a good change that enriches the whole album. Today "such" albums are rarely released, not even by the "big" artists. Have fun with all kinds of good music.

Part of the talking section was about the Oedipus complex which is about a son's rivalry with the father, and guys who have the habit to date or marry women who are a lot like their mothers, it's all figurative of course. But the song used to tick off club owners, prior to their album, and The Doors were often fired from clubs for performing it.

    Most (all?) of the Doors lyrics were written by Morrison. There were some recurring themes that appeared briefly in several songs, one was a sort of fascination with what we used to call American Indians; at some point in his youth, on a family vacation, he witnessed a car wreck where some Indians (Navajos I believe) were killed, and it forever stuck in his mind. On stage he would sometimes, like during the very fast finish of "The End," do a sort of Indian dance. There are several good books written about Morrison and the Doors.

    It was already said, but i want to reiterate because i saw another reactoer get puzzled by the lyric/word also.....so, From the second video of this series & “alabama song” & the “little girl” lyric.... it was a term that was meant to describe an adult woman, at worst, a young adult woman...women, generally, are smaller than men, obviously...so, in that way, its just an innocent term... no different than a rapper of the last 25 years calling a woman a “shorty”, the term “little girl” refers to her size & not, not to her age...thats all it is...it was more common 50, 60, or 70 years ago... its like 50’s , & 60’s era term...it probably started in the 40’s from the jazz music subculture, jack kerouac used a similar term for pretty women, & thats “gone little girl”....again, much, much more a term relating to size, just like “shorty” from hip hop culture.

    • @vincentvancraig
      @vincentvancraig Год назад

      Im watching the second video now, obviously... & its the same with “back door man” & the term “little girl” which was a cover of an old blues song by howlin’ wolf....same situation, its a size thing & not an agenthing....if its subversive at all, it may be a jab at a grown woman’s intelligence or immaturity, maybe, maybe not....but yes, its from another era...& i said it may have had roots in 40’s jazz culture, id like to add to that, or correct it...its as equally possible that the term came from the culture of blues music in the first half of the 20th century...anyway, bottom line is that it is NOT about a child...it refers to an adult woman, or a young adult woman....peace!
