I used to have this show on VHS and watch it many times in the 98-99 time period. This is one of those perfect shows, that is important on so many levels. The first set is rock solid and a Mikes opener is always a great way to get going, especially when the band is locked in like this. The Weekapaug is great. And Reba doesn't dissapoint. The second set is an all timer. Roses is one of the most important jams ever and lands wonderfully into a slow build piper (bring it back please phish). Then in Loving Cup the band and crowd come together to show their spontaneity and joy for the moment. The Antelope is one of my all time favorites with the Carini hijinks and great light work. Its absolutely ripping too. Then a splendid Encore with a Carini - long before it cemented legendary status. The Tweezer Reprise shows Trey in his full glory. It has to be seen to be understood.
I wasn't at this show, but we hit the next two nights. They were both great shows. We had awesome seats for 4/5 too. Up in the balcony to the band's left, but in the first row. Way better than being on the floor. You could see them all perfectly. As great as the island tour was though, the Worcester run that same fall still beat it. These guys were just at the peak of live music in this era.
Was at the show, the energy in the building was palpable during much of the 2nd set. The funk in the roses are free is classic for its time period. It is fun to see Trey dancing around while playing the funk
One of my biggest regrets in life is not being at these shows. We toured heavy starting 95- till NYE run of 98 @ MSG. The Island Tour was legendary months after the tour ended. My favorite era of Phish. The Funk was so thicc & undeniable!
Same. Except wasn't at Cypress, so my other contenders would either be Great Went or 12/29/97. I've listened to this show easily over a hundred times, and it still gives me chills. Great stuff. Cheers, Brah. 🍻👍🏻
My life will forever be lived in regret because we didn't attend any of the Island shows. I would give the MSG NYE run we did that year to have been at these shows. We went hard that summer tour from Philly to Deer Creek and decided we could skip this to shut our parents up. Huge mistake.
