I am just finishing the design of a laptop bag for my son and your two part Messenger Bag video has answered several questions I had on assembly. Thank you for these videos (some 7 years later). Just shows good things never loose their value. Truly love your channel. I learned saddle stitching from your videos on such.
If I can add.. I bought the plans and they are nothing less than excellent! its not just a one page document with dimensions drawn on it.....They are good few pages with a lot of valuable information. Especially good for someone like me who is just starting in this hobby.
One thing I learned doing gussets is that you have to be precise when gluing them to the front or back or you end up with a twist and it's unsightly. Great video, thanks so much!
Thanks Nigel, wonderful video and learned a lot. Thanks very much. I have one of these sewing ponies made by the same person and he is indeed very good, made for personal specifications and nicely priced.
Hi Dragonfly, that depends how adept you are, a day if your very adept. 3 days if your still honing your skills. It will be different for each person. Nigel
Pardon my very late question Nigel, but I noticed the gusset was not punched as you stitched it all together. I assume the gusset was only punched from the outward-facing sides using the awl? How do you ensure that the stitching line for the gusset stayed straight and true?
I was wondering about gussets and how to do them. The first leatherwork book I read said to use rubber cement as a glue just to hold stuff until stitched. So I off course got a tub and have been cussing it ever since. This contact cement you and Ian A. use seems much less messy and more permanent. Have to give it a try. I was watching Ian Atikinson he recommended you in severalof his videos. Blame him for my dumb questions that are probably soon to arrive.
Great videos, full of detailed instructions. Can you recommend the preferred thread sizes in relation to the various pricking iron sizes i.e. 0.8 thread for 6 tpi etc
Nigel, I bought your plans some time ago and I am only now getting around to making the bag. One question; is there any reason why the gusset is in three parts or is it just to save cutting a long piece out of the skin you are using
Nigel, what kind of leather is that? I want to make a bag but I'm not having much luck finding a leather that is stiff enough in a color like that. Is it veg tanned?
Nigel, wonderful videos! I have enjoyed them very much. If at all possible could you show your stitching horse clamps? The one from France interests me. If you could give me the info to find one that would be great! Thanks, Kevin
Beautiful bag...Very inspiring...I spent a lot of time making custom leather watchstraps years ago...and have stepped away from making anything for over 5-6 years now...I am hoping to find some time to get back into this hobby and start making more straps as well as other leather goods again! Thank you! Quick question about the glue that you use....for most of the bag you were using white glue...but when you were gluing the main parts of the bag together you were using a different type of glue...what kind of glue was that and why the change in glue? Thanks! Edit: And I just read the comment below that it's contact cement you are using. Like Nolan asked, is there a specific type/brand that works better than another?
I use PVA to hold bits for marking and stitching, this washes off or the parts can be separated easily. It's very easy to use and doesn't make a mess if I get it wrong. I use contact glue around the gusset which is one chance stuff but sticks forever. I didn't want the edges of the bag to separate so I used this instead of the PVA.
Hi Nigel, I bought your plans (fantastic quality I have to say) and sourced the 'loop' from Tandy's - but I can't find the chrome oval 'grommet' you show in the video anywhere! Is it a one off? I don't really want to just cut a slot, I'd like to make it a really strong fitting that won't damage the leather at that point. Thanks, Claire PS Your videos are excellent.
Hello Claire, the company that makes them in at the back of the plans but a bit difficult to deal with. Try the Ohio Travel Bag Company, they stock them and I think Page 21 of the catalog is where you will find them. Nigel
Hi Nigel, Ohio seems a big deal for one or 20 minutes. What i did was ordered from amazon a number 0, a house sign, that was big enough to take the loop! This looks fine and is an acceptable stop gap for not having the real thing. Thanks for all your help. Best wishes claire
+Ross Salupo....I seen some on ST Leather out of ST. Louis..but they are like the lacing punch, but a called Stitching Punch...Osborne Leather Tools has some...
I explain in the plans what tools I use and where I get them from, but I don't go into any further detail of how to use them. I left that to the visuals in the video. Nigel

What sort of leather did you use for this bag? Drum-dyed? Mossyback? Open back?
Beautiful work....

Hey Nigel, You use two different types of adhesive on the straps and the gusset. what are they and what is the advantage to using them where you did?
I use PVA to hold bits for marking and stitching, this washes off or the parts can be separated easily.

so Nigel how long it takes to make this bag??
The contact cement I use doesn't seem to be as strong as yours. Is yours a special kind? What brand is it?

NICE VIDEO

Thanks!!
would you explain the details of tools, hardware etc as well in the plans?
I explain in the plans what tools I use and where I get them from, but I don't go into any further detail of how to use them.
I left that to the visuals in the video.
Nigel
