🎥 WATCH: Landing at the Most Dangerous Airport in the World - • Landing at the MOST DA...
After landing at Paro Airport, the most dangerous airport in the world, I hit the ground running to start exploring Bhutan! Right away, I loved the chilly temperature-it was about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, but the sun was shining. I met up with my guide, Tsheten from MyBhutan, and our driver, Nidup, outside the airport. I’d been dreaming of visiting Bhutan my entire life, so I was super excited. First up, I’d go on a traditional Bhutanese food tour as we made the drive from Paro to Punakha, Bhutan!
Tsheten presented me with a beautiful, white welcoming scarf before we set off to the town to get some breakfast. We arrived in Paro town, where I saw lots of beautiful, traditional buildings and handicraft markets. We stopped at Champaca Café, where we would have some momos!
We started with some salted butter tea called suja. It’s very buttery and tastes quite salty, too. It tastes like a soup because it’s very thick, creamy, and piping hot. Then, we got two types of momos: cheese and chicken with a creamy, spicy chili paste called ezay. The ezay wasn’t too hot at first, but it crept up on me later! This breakfast was an awesome way to start my time in Bhutan!
After stopping inside a nearby shop to get me a hat, we had a three-hour drive ahead of us. We followed a winding road that passed through mountains, farmland, and red rice paddy fields. I got out to get a stunning view of the Paro River and the surrounding landscape before we tried some dry yak cheese on strings called chogo. It was rock hard, so I had to let my saliva soak into it to soften it up.
Soon, we passed through Thimphu, a city of 100,000. There were lots of buildings built in the new style. We continued on, past prayer flags, until we reached the Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang Chortens, a memorial of 108 stupas in Dochula Pass. They were built in 2004 to honor Bhutanese soldiers who died fighting Assamese insurgents from India in 2003.
After 20 minutes, we arrived at a traditional spot called Menchuna Restaurant. There was a stupa out front. On the buffet, they had cabbage, noodles, chicken with chilies, mixed vegetables, and spinach. I got my food a la carte and had dried fish with chilies, dried pork with radish and chilies, ezay, squash with chilies, and the chicken from the buffet.
The ezay was really hot. I mixed some into the red rice. The squash was spicy and delicious and had a meaty texture. The radish with the fatty pork was unreal. The pork was crispy on the outside and very thick. It reminded me of some of the pork dishes I ate in Meghalaya, India.
The dried fish was good, but it contained lots of bones, so I had to be careful with it. It was dripping with oil. I’d never had fish like this! The chili paste with the long beans were also amazing. It had my mouth tingling. This food was super spicy! My favorite was the squash, which was like a glazy stir-fry. I loved the flavors of everything together.
Then, I tried a special VIP dish that’s only made during special occasions, like the Punakha Festival. It’s made from rice, coriander, egg, and chilies. Next to it, I has dome more suja, which you enjoy with it. The rice dish was like a fried rice, while the suja tasted like pure butter. Then, I added some ezay to the rice, which made it much spicier and tastier!

Great video...brought back memories...I just returned to Miami from Bhutan a couple of weeks ago. I've been to almost 80 countries in my lifetime, and Bhutan is hands down one of my favorite countries, to date. The food was outstanding, the people were so nice, and the scenery was breathtaking. I recognized a few places in your video. I visited Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha with a great tour guide and driver. Thanks for posting.
Sounds like you had an amazing trip. The food is spicy though for sure. Wishing you a beautiful weekend in Miami as well. Thanks for the support.
This brought back alot of memories of my trip to bhutan with 5 friends of mine on three motorcycles. We travelled from shillong to Phuentsohling, then from there to Thimpu and pari towards tigers nest, and finally we exited from Gelephu back to india. It was an almost complete trip of bhutan and achieved it in one week. We were greatly recieved by the Bhutanese people and their hospitality is still warm in our hearts.

David when u will visit himachal Pradesh , Nagaland , uttarakhand ,ladakh ,Jammu Kashmir ,u will get lost in the heaven , remember my words😄
I had been introduced to Bhutan by National Geographic Magazine when the published the story of father of current regent of Bhutan as he was taking the throne after the death of his` father. His wife was an American and also educated in USA. He first the first king in the wold to introduce a national policy of Gross Happiness. Then he slowly bring his nation to modernization keeping old faith and culture intact. And few years back he handed over his throne to his son, the current Regent of Bhutan. Then the incredible Mark Weins bring back Bhutan to the RUclips and covers this beautiful country to the world. He introduced this country of his food, culture, different cities, living, etc. Now, David, i am glad that you, once again, you bring back the Bhutan to the world. I am looking forward to watch all series and see what changes has been made to the Bhutan between Mark Weins videos and now.

Come on.... Bhutanese fella. There is no such thing as Yak cheese, it is same as saying Bull's milk. You have to explain to the people who don't know. By the way female 'Yak' is called 'Dri'.
Literally Menchuna means:
Men = Medicine/Medicinal
Chu = Water/Liquid
Na = The place.

the guide is wrong about the DOCHULA... it was not to celebrate the victory but for the people who lost their lives during the war in 2003 from both the sides.
Non-vege meal is reachable to guests but vegetarian is legal to locals and for locals they are mostly vegetarian
Honestly most of our Bhutanese guides and hotrliers sugarcoat so many things. That's shameful

Dear David , Momo is Not Indo-Chinese dish.its Nepali dish . Here’s why : There are countless version of dumplings but ingredients, how it’s made , how it’s served etc all help the same idea (meat or veggies in dough wrapped ) distinct identities to different cultures and countries. The dumplings known as momo therefore is nepali . Just like keema , samosa (ground meat in fried dough is keema samosa (Persian ? Indian ? ) but shapaley (also ground meat in fried dough ) is Tibetan shapaley. There are different forms of dumplings , for example : dim sum of China , Manty of Kyrgyzstan . Point is there are versions of dumplings in my many cultures. Just like there there are different local version of so many dishes too . But Momo as we know it and has existed for generations is Nepali . Nepal’s MoMo likely came from Tibet. But that’s a centuries old origin story.
It has since become a Nepali dish.
& its wide popularity in India is also tied to Kathmandu MoMo’s popularity on Indian food & travel shows in 1990s.
Dumpling is originally Chinese, then it spread to other countries just like Noodle. The name may differ though. It maybe in trend in other part of India in the 1990s but I have had dumplings since I was a child and i am in my 40s now and before me my mother so i can't say momo is a Nepalese dish only. Shafaley is a mongolian dish. And i am from North East India. I love sel roti, choila and gunduruk and I know these are authentic Nepali dish but dumpling and noodles are Chinese. Even Italian pasta are inspired from Chinese noodles.
Amphu Rongpipi I think you didn’t understand what I am trying to say . Just like pasta , dumplings was bought to Nepal by Nepali Newar merchant from Tibet centuries ago. Yes concept of dumplings is chinese (meat or veggies inside dough wrap) Newar made momo in Nepali style , ingredients, the way its served etc . There are countless version of momo all over the world and if you go to krygstan they have their own style dumplings, and they call it manty, Mainland China have their own style dumplings too. Even within Nepal there are many delish regional variations. For eg: samosa Is not authentic Indian dish . It is Central Asian. In Central Asia they put keema and various other stuff inside the dough but in india they put veggies. So they call samosa as indian . And Momo is more famous in northeast India because Some part of north east have Nepali speaking majority people , it was once ruled by Nepal.

16.40 - The lucky # 108 finds its origin in ancient Indian culture, before Buddhism came into existence.
So beautiful Bhutan
Actually Bhutan don't have particular dishes.
whhere the F had Mark wiens gone to? That place had NO shops, no hotels, no resturants.....thats why people hated his videos. worst videos ever of Wiens. He had to stay at someones house ........this is soooooo different.
Nice bro, from Assame
The number 108 is considered a sacred number in Hinduism, Buddhism and yogic tradition. Malas or Japa beads come in a string of 108 and are used for devotional meditation, mantra and prayer. With each bead a mantra or prayer is repeated to meet a total of 108
U r so decent & humble man I just love your attitude.... God bless u man
