I lived in Malaysia & married 1981..Lived on the beach in Balok, 10 mins or so from Kuantan near by to Cherating which had then just one basic restraurant with a few tables overlooking a prestine beach. We lived in a simple wooden house on stilts with balconies overlooking the beach & coconut trees. There were very few cars in those days transport was by taxis & rickity buses. There were also the dreaded logging trucks hauling huge trunks of wood, initiating the ongoing destruction of the jungle. No real tourism to speak off. Just occassional travellers passing through..Lived in Taman Negara for awhile..6 hours down the river on a clearing, just 2 couples & 2 infants..The nearest settlement a handful of kampong houses a 6 hour walk through serious jungle..Had my own hut with a mat on the floor overlooking the river & would fall asleep listening to all the Orangatans chatting among themselves..Returned to Kuantan in 2004..Did not recognize anything..The traffic was horrendous, the coconut plantations abutting the beach gone, the chickens running around freely not to be seen and no roaming caribou like the ones that wandered down the shoreline as the sun was setting every evening..There were no supermarkets in Kuantan..Dresses were tailor made! It was simple life ..My only neighbour could just be seen, loads of children that played on the beach their dad a fisherman. We had a well, no running water, an an outside loo! For me returning was a sad experience, a paradise lost. I believe much of Taman Negara has been destroyed & planted with the dreaded palm oil, terrible for the environment & animal life..We travelled around Malaysia in our VW, visited Cammeron highlands where we stayed in a lovely old colonial hotel..The jungle was still prolific then, just a few tea & coffee plantations. The biggest draw back for me was the heat!! It's always a challenge to return to places & witness total change! I do however miss the generous spirits of the Malays & of course the food!! But I like long cool walks & am fortunate to live in Suffolk, which on the whole has remained relativeltly peaceful & unspoilt. Have been fortunate to have travelled extensively & adventurously around the world, East & West over the last 45 years plus, so happy now to settle! Wishing you happy journeys!

Hi Aisha. I live in Beserah, 5 KM from Balok. I ve been to Taman Negara a few times.
As for Balok, i only see a lot of developmemt and improvement instead of destruction. There are many nice shops with proper toilets & parking spaces being build along Balok & Batu Hitam beaches. Many locals enjoyed nice evenings & weekend in the beaches.
However, not much happening further north of Balok up to Cherating, I think due to lack of visitors and tourist. Many appartment complexes along Sg Ular road being abandoned, worst still due to Covid. There are plans for massive development in these areas with completion of ECRL and a new airport and upgrade of Kuantan Port.
As for the Taman Negara, I believe the oil palm plantation never encroach the Park Area. The proper park area is on the other side of the Tahan River, and I dont see a single palm tree there, only virgin jungle to the brim.
      Thank you.

Ipoh (if you havent been back recently) has become more & more flourished as one of Malaysia's top tourist spots... Singaporeans would fly to Ipoh on weekends just to enjoy the haven for food..(because the flight fare is cheaper than travel by cars) .Not to mention, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has also been a great icon, many of Hong Kong artistes know about Ipoh because of her reputation.

Having worked, traveled and lived around the world decades ago, several older friends and random people I encountered in places like Mexico, Florida, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and Spain who were looking for a place to escape America or the U.K. and retire, asked me where I would go, and I suggested they consider Malaysia.
Now that I'm at that point of my life, and so many things in America are worse than decades ago, now to the point that the retired person can't afford to live, or would want to, I've been looking for places to escape to, and after taking a pretty bad hit financially and business wise over the last few years, Any trip out of America would pretty much have to be a one-way trip.
Before 2020 I had considered going back to Malaysia and even considered Thailand, Australia, Turkey, the Republic of Georgia and a couple of places in South America and the Caribbean, but with recent global changes Malaysia is still top of my option list, but with resent changes to income and fixed-deposit requirements, the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) and the less demanding Sarawak MM2H program are still a bit of a challenge for me, but I may have no choice but to go somewhere outside the U.S.
A most basic Flat where I live has went from $500/month before the pandemic to approaching $2,000 a month now, and when I'm kicked out of my current place so the land lord and double the rent, like many Americans I will be homeless with $2500 a month of retirement income, and if that happens I'll most likely have to leave the U.S. and visa hop, and If so Malaysia would likely be my first stop, and see if I can work out some way to reside long term.
      Cheers and best wishes.

You can save time if you start asking around when you stop to eat at places you wanted to go. Double check your previous info along the Way. You will get to yr destination fast and save times.

nice video Chris & Marianne. tq. Kuantan is always special to me. went to st thomas secondary school there 1983-1987. Pristine beaches ( telok cempedak, balok, beserah, cherating), kuantan river front, seafood at tg lumpur, jeti nelayan at padang lalang.... so so nostalgic.
tq again to both of you. the world is full of beautiful people and we should enjoy and share it. It is kinda sad with the wars in Gaza & Ukraine and now spilling to Yemen.
btw Chris, i used to work in hospitals around Uk (walsgrave, birmingham, hereford, bedford, QMC to name a few) and i found patients and colleagues were nice as well. but admittedly, winter could be a despair hahaha.
safe journey to you both and keep finding new spots that even we locals yet to discover.

Careful when heading up to Cameron Highlands - all that rainfall means the risk of landslides. Roads leading up to all highland areas - Cameron Highlands, Fraser's Hill and Genting Highlands all face increased landslide risk during the monsoon season due to poorly-regulated development. The incline on these roads might be challenging for your camper van too! You might want to consider meandering up the west coastal road (instead of the main central highway). It'll take you to small towns like Kuala Selangor and Teluk Intan, where time seems to have stuck in the late 70s or okay, maybe the 90s. More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Federal_Route_5

If you manage to get to Penang Island be sure to visit the Kek Lok Si Temple it's stunning. We had a 5 day stopover at Batu Ferringhi on route to New Zealand in 1999. The food was as good as I've tasted anywhere and the people are wonderfully friendly.
A tailor made me a wonderful suit overnight and delivered it to my hotel room before we set off for the airport, 14 hours from start to delivery! He kept apologizing for the price but said that he had to pay his staff extra because it was a holiday. How much did it cost? £30 and I've still got it and it still looks good.
Did hope to return but not yet managed it! Hoping that you could take us there👍👍

*BEAUTIFUL* quote at the start!!! Marianne's "enthusiasm" for going out in the deluge gave us both chuckles, as did the movie clip in the sponsor message. 🤣
The water buffalo were amazing! What is the symbiotic relationship with the egrets, I wonder? They sure do look interested in what the buffalo are doing.
What an amazing cave temple! 😱🤯 Well worth the effort it would seem from your reactions.
Might not want Smell-O-Vision for the sweaty vanlifer bits, but I sure did for the vanilla beans! 🤤
All the best, you guys!! ❤️❤️😎👍xx
