It's exciting watching a youngin'' listen to a Led Zeppelin song for the first time (this song in particular, I know you've listened to others) This is probably one of my favorites by them, but then it's not easy to choose one favorite song by them...too many to choose from. Reminds me of my Senior year at high school when I worked as substitute custodian for the high school. I would set up a record player in a locked room, run the cord to the speaker in the hallway and have this album playing as I cleaned my section of the school. Awesome.
Daniel, recently I have been working with another angel to suggest to reactors to always have a link to the original video and also have a link to the official YT channel for the artist. The best way to support the artist, is to verbally encourage your viewers to subscribe to the artist's YT channel along with yours. After all, without the artists, we would not have anything to react to. Of course we concentrate on reactions to Angelina since she is one of the most undervalued artists on RUclips.

Achilles Last Stand should be nicknamed the appoggiatura song - it's a matrix of appoggiaturas, musically. Page & JPJ structured this whole thing ingeniously with two note descending figures, mostly upper neighbor to main tone --- starting with the oscillating guitar intro. It's a masterly piece of riff economy.

Definitely a great advantage to us now is the internet. When I was first listening to this song, I had no idea what Mr. Robert was singing, lol. I was an 11-12 year old kid who hadn't yet read Homer. The lyrics weren't included in the album sleeve, so all we could do was listen closely with headphones if we wanted to know the lyrics. I wasn't as interested in the lyrics as I was the guitars and drums, as I play those instruments, and at that time had just started. Great video!

It's also why at one time Jimmy's political affiliation was Tory. I don't know if that's still true today though.

Led Zeppelin didn't tour with a second guitarist during their 1977 North America tour. Actually, I don't think they ever toured with a second rhythm guitarist, only Jimmy Page on lead.
I thought some songs suffered BIG TIME especially during some of my favorite guitar sections that just weren't played.
However, this song, "Achilles Last Stand" was definitely the "standout" of their entire set at Madison Square Garden in June of 1977.
I was in attendance, I think, the 2nd night of their 6 night, sold out appearances in New York City.
The 4 of them were powerful, majestic, mind blowing, human Gods on stage. Simply unforgettable.
But yet, another touring band completely "blew them out of the water", 21 nights later.
South Phillys Spectrum, Pink Floyd during their, "In the Flesh" tour, promoting the "Animals" album.
What I judge and compare ALL concerts too. None have matched it that I've attended.

The crazy thing about Zeppelin is the way they didn't really do anything that other bands weren't doing, they just did it ALL and did it better. They did early metal better than Sabbath, blues rock better than the Stones, psychedelic rock better than Cream, progressive rock better than The Who or Floyd, and folk rock better than anyone. One gets the sense that other great rock bands were rockers first and musicians second, but Led Zeppelin seemed to be a group of incredible musicians who just happened to be into rock and roll.

I think Jimmy Page's musical experimentation was not like anyone else was doing. His use of the Theremin and his playing the guitar with a cello bow, also some of the progressive passages in the music, as in Dazed and Confused and Whole Lotta Love and his mixing of acoustic guitar playing with electric guitar as in Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Also Communication Breakdown is like punk music before punk was even a thing. The fact that they influenced so many other bands is a testimony to their originality. Jimmy always denies they were a metal band but metal did develop out of their sound, by other bands. They had the heaviest rock sound around when they came on the scene. Robert Plant became a bit of a model for rock singers that followed -not just his voice but also his style and persona. No one really played drums like John Bonham and JPJ could play keyboards and bass at the same time as well as playing other instruments.

I agree with most of your comments but, I feel both The Who (rock operas etc) and Pink Floyd (concept albums and live visuals) were both more creative and innovative than Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd tended to produce much more rounded complex soundscapes (ie Echoes, The Great Gig in the Sky)

@@simply_psi It was a different genre of music that Pink Floyd were playing - progressive. LZ were experimenting with or extending traditional genres. The most innovative Pink Floyd member originally was Syd Barrett, until he left. The kind of sound Pink Floyd are known for today was also influenced by someone who was not in the band but had a big hand in the creation of their album 'Atom Heart Mother'. That guy (can't remember his name) had a passion for bringing in everyday noises and sounds, and also brought in an orchestra. At the time Pink Floyd resented that he had more control than they over the album and to this day they tend to disparage it, especially David Gilmour. However they must have been influenced by it as they were known for bringing such sounds and noises into many of their subsequent albums. I agree that Pink Floyd were the most original band since The Beatles (Sgt Pepper's etc) and probably the most original of all, but others did pave the way for them, though not so original.

@@heliotropezzz333 an excellent comment and shows you have a great understanding of music and excellent taste, Syd was lyrically very clever but his "sound" was very similar in a lot of his work, I think a lot of Pink Floyd's post Syd creativity was from Alan Parsons the engineer on Dark Side of the Moon and Atom Heart Mother he was also the engineer on Abbey Road for The Beatles who also had George Martin a very creative sound engineer for The Beatles and of course a young Alan Parson learnt his craft working with George Martin, sometimes the creativity of the artist comes from people in the background, like Mick Ronson and Tony Visconti for David Bowie in the early/mid 70's, and Quincy Jones for Michael Jackson (and many many more). I think the talent of these artists are not only in their own fingers and minds but also in picking who they work with. Of course it can work the other way round the countless over produced tech laiden garbage turned out by Trevor Horn proves this.

@@simply_psi Your comment prompted my to look up the name of the guy who did the majority of the work on Atom Heart Mother. It was Ron Geesin. This is what Wikipedia says '. After the band found themselves hopelessly deadlocked over how to complete the title track from Atom Heart Mother in 1970, Pink Floyd entrusted the backing track mix on tape with him (Ron Geesin) while they went on a USA tour. He analysed and mapped the whole tape, then composed all the material, including melodies, for 10 brass, 20 choir and solo cello. When the group returned from the USA, the work was recorded in EMI Abbey Road Studios.'

Great choice. Pretty proggy for them. Some many things to hear on this one track. A showcase for each talent in the band. (I too finally got a haircut. Man, do I feel better now.) Cheers Daniel!

"Epic"? Well, if you're going to name a song "Achilles' last stand" it had damned well better be epic, and Zep never disappointed.
