Curved Edge Display Phones: My 7-Years Experience!

  • Smartphones with dual-curved displays were considered premium up until a few years ago. But recently, many pioneering companies, like Samsung, have moved away from this design in favor of a flatter screen as before. But why? What are the pros and cons of these dual-curved edge smartphone displays? Are they worth buying today?
    As someone who has used these curved screens for the last 7 years, I'll share my take on this, and we can discuss it in the comments.

    Never been a fan as it makes the phone incredibly fragile... Everyone drops their phone at some stage so it's almost a guaranteed expensive problem. Better to get a solid flat screen with an OtterBox.

    • @TheHopelessGeek

      True, it's an expensive repair. Even though flat screen phones are prone to the same risk, protecting them is simple.

      My oneplus 7 pro fell down more than i can count. One time it fell when i was chasing my dog, one time it fell from the second floor balcony, and worst, fell from my bike when i was riding, albeit not so fast. and i got the frame scratched and dented. The back and the front somehow always survive. Neither cracked or scratched. Finally got the back cracked in early 2024 because when i was working, i accidentally brushed a japanese handsaw to the top left side of the back and it cracked.
      So no. Curved screen ain't fragile. And because the sides are usually mare with mistouch prevention in mind, i have less mistouch in my oneplus 7 pro than my other flat screen phones

    I wanted to buy a best all rounder phone in the range of 40k. Oneplus Nord 4 is a good option with flat display but I personally liked Realme GT 6 because of more powerful processor, better display and camera and lastly it's ai features. Curved display is a con for me but I am confused that what phone should I get. I would mostly do video editing, watching content and medium gaming.
    Also, my another question is that if I take a curved display phone then is it possible to protect it's screen from breaking without using the uv tempered glass?

    • @TheHopelessGeek
      @TheHopelessGeek  Месяц назад

      You can buy the curved screen phone if it has overall better specs. The tempered glass protection is tricky with those edges. I haven't been able to see its benefit. But use a skin or something on the back to improve the grip.

    • @TheHopelessGeek
      @TheHopelessGeek  7 месяцев назад +1

      Curved screens are difficult to protect and keep inside accessories. They're only good for a smooth feel and a borderless look.
      There won't be any issues with a standard phone holder, as these phones have a strong enough frame on the sides, albeit covered with an edge screen.
      If you travel a lot and tend to use your phone outdoors more often, it may be better to get a flat screen one.

    I have a curved display phone and i am just glad that everytime i dropped it is when it had back cover because i had dropped it tonnes of times. Once even while trying to catching my phone as it was freefalling i accidently hit it and even increased its momentum. the loudness of the contact of my phone and the concrete surface was frightening. I was scared to even pick it up and i was amazed to see only a few cracks on the protector only and the screen was fine. If is didnot had the back cover i would have lost the screen as well as the back of my phone as its also glass.
    SO, WHOEVER IS READING THIS AND HAS A CURVED DISPLAY OR A GLASS BACK, TRUST ME ''(THICK )BACK COVER SAVES LIVES!''.
    Also, i kinda regret having a curved screen as i continously have to live in the fear of breaking it and going broke to repair it. and also its not like its some extra useful feature (i find it compeletly gimmick). @TheHopelessGeek  7 месяцев назад

      6 years ago, aluminum and glass was as premium as they get in a phone. We still use similar designs today, just with stainless steel or titanium and stronger glass.
      And yes, the curved displays don't add much to the functionality.

    • @TheHopelessGeek
      @TheHopelessGeek  7 месяцев назад

      Thickness of the material matters. Soft drink cans are nowhere near as thick as a phone's frame.
      And, on a side note, aircrafts use the same material, too. They use the same grade aluminum there. It's not a "buzzword" if what they've said is exactly what's in your hands.😂
      An example of a buzzword is Apple's "sapphire crystal glass". Testing shows that it's just a thin layer and nothing close to that of original purity. But the 6000 series aluminum used in most phones is literally just that.

      Correct. It's cheap, and easy to machine, making it accessible for many. It suffices for the durability needs of a handheld device. If it's good enough for rocketships, it's certainly fine for a phone. 🙂

    I am Off the video topic but what are the non round/full corners of phones (like they used to 10+ years ago) called?
    And what are the current ones (corner is rounded) called?
    Googling tells me about curved display when i describe them,but they arent..

      I don't recall there being a standard term for the display corners. I remember labelling them simply as "Squared-off corners" and "Rounded corners"

    I am keen to buy motorola edge 50, what do you think about it? It has got a military grade certification, so I think the screen durability issues are tackled. But, I wanted to know, does the curved display cause any privacy issues? Maybe a person beside you could see what you are doing as the curved part would be visible to him?

      Curved screens don't cause ay such problems. If you like the phone, you can go for it. You'll have to get used to the slightly different in-hand feel of these phones. That's all.🙂👍🏻
