I may not have all the right tools. My family was never mechanically inclined to help me out. I’m making the most out of what I have. I plan on getting better tooling from all your suggestions. Proud of myself that I was able to do this without instruction 🥰

I recommend spraying anti corrosion such as fluid flim on your new suspension parts, especially threads. They have corrosion resistance metal but still helps more with fluid film.
Wear a respirator from 3M whenever you use chemical sprays to save your lungs. Brake cleaners to spray paint.

Im not a GM guy but love seeing people with little to no experience or tools just get in there and get it done, not many men and far fewer women that will risk changing parts for fear of breaking something also its why my shop is always full. I lmao when you were taking that lower arm off with an adjustable wrench and said... what in the freaking fuk🤣. I said then, yep shes got this she already cussing and not 1/4 the way into it yet but when you got to DP the washer i spit my tea out and pissed my dog off😂😂. Keep wrenching chick im here for the comedy and see the car make some passes or hit a road course one day💪🏻

good job looks like you are having fun and that is what wrenching is all about.... As a retired A&P IA and aerospace engineer, now I just restore and fabricate vehicles of every kind.... please get a set of wrenches, honestly even harbor freight wrenches are better than an adjustable wrench, vise grips are always a no-no on all bolts and nuts... be careful with those torque wrenches they are not to be used as ratchets, and please don't drop or bang them on the ground they are precise measure tools.... you are doing fine, and getting great results... just some friendly advise people gave me as a new mechanic 30yrs ago...

Great Job!!!! Helpful Hint. Always apply a small amount of synthetic grease to the rub points of bushings so they don't bind or twist. Also the control arms should be tightened with the suspension compressed with a jack. That way the bushing is not twisted when the car is back on the ground. Lastly, always use thread locker on the bolts for that added security. Your doing Great!!!! The Chassis Guy

  • @Coda5610
    @Coda5610 2 года назад +34

When tighting suspension bushing, the car needs to be under "preload" before fully tightening the bolt or it will premature wear out the bushings. Also tightening the bushing bolts while its in the air and unpreloaded will also make the bushings squeak

Couple of pieces of advice for the next time.
    1. Just use the bolt with the OE oblong washer, it would have worked fine for your application. Now if you ever want to go back to OE, you need new arm bolts.
    2. PLEASE don’t use a torque wrench for normal ratcheting. I know they do ratchet but they are precise tools and banging it around and using it to break tightened nuts and bolts is not what it was made for.
Not hating and not trying to be “that guy” just trying to offer advice to help you grow. Awesome seeing you owning your passion and doing all the work yourself. Great Job!

Pro tip Kayla. Yes, you can't get an impact in there. But....you can get a deep socket and a breaker bar in there similar to what you used to remove your road wheels. Leverage.
Also...no mechanic worth their salt almost ever uses a crescent wrench for anything like this. Box end wrenches...all bolt hex head contact so the wrench can't slip and as importantly, you don't round the hex head.
I give you a lot of credit for your intrepid spirit to tackle suspension work with little experience. You only get experience with trial and error but helps to learn from a master. There are good youtube channels to learn to wrench properly as well...but a lot of hacks on line as well.
    Good luck.
P.S. When I see you work on the car, I wish I could help. For example, best to press the eccentric washers off the bolt...a simple press. If pounding on it....use a nut on the end of the bolt flush to the end of the bolt so you don't bugger the thread. Never use vice grips. There are countless techniques to make this job easier. I give you a heck of a lot of credit for doing this without instruction.
A last note, The halfshaft rubbing on the frame flange is due to your change in nominal ride height....or you are running slightly oversized half shafts aka constant velocity joints for greater strength. The suspension is designed to subtend an arc from full jounce to rebound. When you lower the car, this changes the tolerance of suspension travel which the suspension is designed for. Yes, many times mild modifications can be performed for a bit more clearance.
I'm a bit surprised you didn't hear this rub. Maybe you did. I am a car designer FWIW.
Last note, please wear gloves with mild padding. If a wrench slips which is more common when learning, you can do serious damage to your hands and you want to avoid that of course. None of this matters without your personal safety to enjoy the fruits of your hard work. If you want to spend time personally modding your car, it would be great to align forces with a master mechanic. This would be invaluable and you may get the bug to build some outrageous cars.

Kayla The more camber angle you put into your front and rear wheels the faster your expensive tires will wear out on the street. On the track it's a no no too. You will have less traction moving forward and it's dangerous if the front's pull up off the ground and come back down the car will want to dart to one side or the other possibly spinning the car into the wall or curb, pole. I love the stiffening components though and the mint green calipers look great on white.

What I don’t like about these types of adjustable suspension arms is that you can end up with different length arms on each side of the car after alignment, which can make the car handle differently on left vs right turns. With eccentric bolts the arms remain the same length at all times. The difference can be subtle but it can be an issue nonetheless.
