    Thank you for this video. It was pretty clear and understandable. And thank you for explaining using the layer mask. I'll watch again I'm sure.

    I've been using unsharp mask for years as my primary sharpening tool. HP filter is awesome and your video was perfect at explaining it and providing the user different options. It's a keeper and I've shared the link on an FB group when the discussion of sharpening came up. Great job - thank you :)

    Thank you so much Nick for teaching us this technique. I have been using unsharp mask to sharpen and the results does even compare to what you have shown here. Really appreciate it

    Thanks Nick! I'm in NorCal too. I'm primarily a landscape photog and it's super helpful to see how portrait folks edit. Different world! Thanks so much!

      Tom Thirty Two oh really what part of NorCal? I have hardly any idea how to process landscape, I used to shoot it a lot when I was starting out but it was always just basic raw adjustments. I never got deep into editing until I started taking portraits.

      Sacramento area. I'm sure I saw the photo in this tutorial before. Maybe IG or elsewhere. I am looking forward to more content!

    What shortcut did you use to show the red mask on 12:19?

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  6 лет назад +1

      Back slash on the keyboard while the mask is selected, hope that helps.

    Never knew about that filter and all the sudden, feeling dumb. Excellent tutorial. Thank you sir.
    I also truly appreciate the work you have up on your IG; the style you're shooting in is exactly what I'm trying to teach myself at this point. Portrait photography is a lot different than wildlife stuff; where animals are much more matter-of-fact, portraits need to capture and display emotion and beauty.
    All in due time, I suppose. :)

    Hi Nick. I don`t see much difference between the layers. Is it really worth the effort?

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  6 лет назад

      Usually I just go straight for vivid light and just duplicate once and paint in on the eyes and lips.

    WOW Excellent... just a note.... Duplicating a Overlay blend mode layer gets more sharpening without some of the harsh effects of a single Vivid Light layer. ( That might not make any sense ) . So.... THANKS.. Another tool in my process. I LOVE YOUR portraits... so fine... I guess this is part of it...

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  7 лет назад

      Just Bartee Photography I use vivid light because I think it has a happy. Medium between overlay and Linear Light, if you watch to the end I do make duplicates and selectively sharpen more areas as well.

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  7 лет назад

      Also glad to hear you like my work!

    • @justbartee
      @justbartee 7 лет назад

      Yes, absolutely watched to the end... experimented and loved it... the duplicate layers thing is really good.. I now understand radius better, from your one sentence about it's effect... One step at a time, I am learning PS and getting better... THANK YOU ... Happy New Year... Back to editing .. I will link you when I post one of these on IG...

    Question to anyone who can spare the time and knowledge. When do we sharpen? At the end of work flow on the origonal image or at the end of work flow of the flattened copy of that image I.e. the tiff/jpeg we are sending to print. So this would be a duplicate of the origonal and after ICC profiles, print size, rendering intent, contrast and saturation adjustments and finally convert to profile. I know how to sharpen but its in when is the answer. Any advice most welcome as long as its constructive and not just conjecture. Photoshops like religion many opinions but not much truth in the gospel. Have a lovely day.

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  2 года назад +1

      Great question. Personally I sharpen at the end of an image because I'm usually working on a portrait and I don't want to sharpen anything I'm going to work on. The way this sharpen method works you can sharpen without flattening the image or if you want to on a flattened image. As you said it's down to personal preference. Hope this answers your question.

    problem with all sharpening videos is that they start with an already sharp picture, contrary to what the video thumbnail shows..

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  7 лет назад +1

      I've used this technique to fix some photos that were not sharp to begin with, you just need a higher radius to bring things into focus. Of course sharpening an already sharp photo is going to give you even better results.

    • @bettywhiteandtheboondockers
      @bettywhiteandtheboondockers 7 лет назад +2

      *eyeroll* You can't use sharpening to bring an unfocused image into focus. If you can't get your camera properly focused while shooting, maybe you should work on that before you get into retouching.

    • @sebulva
      @sebulva 7 лет назад +1

      super eyeroll, my pictures are sharp af (af not as in auto focus). problem is when I receive pictures from customers.. and what is the point of making a video called "The BEST way to SHARPEN your images" if you start it with an already sharp image..

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  7 лет назад +2

      Ivan Lopez you do realize that wasn't me who commented that right? Also this is the best way to sharpen your images. Most professionals use this method. Also as I mentioned, bump the radius up and you can add some more detail even to things that aren't super sharp to begin with.

    • @sebulva
      @sebulva 7 лет назад +1

      yes Nick, got it, no drama, and yes agree with the technique and this is an excellent video, however as my initial comment says, the video and the technique used in it may not be representative to the thumbnail of the video. Once again, thanks for taking the time to share the knowledge.. appreciate it..
