    Hi Erik, nice video. Here's some insight about HS volleyball in Japan. I'm an American expat who has been living in Japan for 14 years now and did some assistant coaching with a high school team. The team activities are no joke. It's completely different from the US 'cause they play almost every single day for 3 years (JHS and HS is 3 years each here). Teams and extra-curricular are a year-round thing and not seasonal, you never hear of multi-sport athletes. Also, there is no club volleyball. Pre-COVID, practices are usually held in the morning until before homeroom starts and then afterschool till about 6:30PM (maybe some schools who went to area tournaments and nationals still continued practice as usual).

    1:31 #6 Gaku Kusumoto from Higashiyama is currently one of the most popular player for Japanese high school volleyball fandom. He is short 177cm but he's called as a genius weak side spiker has too quick spike and technics. In fact, the coaches depended on him as the ace after Ran Takahashi #1 left.
    #7 (3rd year) the insane setter and #6 (2nd) the spiker had amazing combination (Fan fact: this duo is the champion of junior high nationals & high school nationals 2020) #6 could join in a stronger team at university this year but he picked a minor team same as #7. • @charleslavalliere
      @charleslavalliere 2 года назад +12

      At that level size and upper body strengh play a big role. As a former national coach once told me '' I can teach and help with skills, I can't do anything for height''. Taller means you can also jump later to hide your intentions, which is impossible for a smaller guy who needs to jump much sonner and higher to reach the same high. Small ''jumpers" eventually get destroyed by very tall blockers who just wait for them. Size also helps a lot with overpass and reaching bad set. Even for a libero, it is way much faster to move long arms than your feet reach a ball out of your position.

    • @zonk9343
      @zonk9343 2 года назад +2

      @@charleslavalliere That was a great explanation! I am just getting into volleyball, isn’t being shorter better for liberos since they need to hit lower balls, and they can spot balls that go out behind them more easily?

    • @charleslavalliere
      @charleslavalliere 2 года назад +2

      @@zonk9343 To a certain point yes, you will not see libero incredibly tall, but nowdays most are between 180 to 190 cm (6 feet to 6'4"). The original idea was to give space for smaller players, but players shorter than that are not really much faster. From my experience and obervations of different sports people start losing speed and ability to play low balls around 6'4" (190 cm), which is also common for Tennis.
