- Half Life Vance (now known as ReVance) is a mod that aims to retell the story of Half-Life 2 but without Gordon Freeman. In this universe, Gordon never came back and we'll be playing as Alyx Vance who now dons the HEV Suit.

I noticed some folks are having trouble downloading this. Here's how I did it:
1- Click the gitlab link in the description.
2 - Click the download icon that's located left of the "Clone" button.
3 - Click "zip".
4 - Download should start.
5 - After download is completed, open the directory and open the "Run Vance.bat" file.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the sudden influx of users, the download may or may not work right now. If it doesn't, please wait a while before trying again.

The idea that Gordon was only in HL1 and only exists as a mythical figure is awesome to me.
HL1 and 2 are so different to me they might as well be different universes.

HL Vance is essentially just HL Alyx, but it takes place during HL2, Alyx has a cool suit, and the guns look better

the first time i heard of the vance mod was when it was cancelled, i was actually sad about it since the whole ''What if Gordon refused the G-man's deal'' thing is a really cool concept and Alyx essentially being G-man's fallback for his plan is even cooler and it was sad to see a idea like that go to waste. but now hearing that its being remade? i am overjoyed and cannot wait for it to come out.
I was actually friends with one of the concept artists on the old mod. It's very strange to see this mod again. Idk if they're still an artist on the new team. I remember being devastated when the mod got cancelled but not surprised because I was used to disappointment in this community. But then Entropy Zero 2 came out and gave me and everyone else in the HL community hope and that probably includes the people who are reviving this project. This mod will be one of the best, I can already tell.

Looks like it may have been. The GitLab link is down, and the discord server invite on GameBanana doesn't work.
I remember watching Deadwater Gaming's video on it last year, and was sad to see such a promising mod get cancelled. I am glad its been revived.
Can we just appreciate how the combine, a known dark and gritty faction, single handedly cleaned up the ocean? Such great people!
Well, they didn't in release version. It was in HL2 Beta and obviously that idea was cut like many Beta ideas were.

@@Feasco They drained a A LOT of it. Lowering the shoreline that far would require somewhere over 3 trillion metric tonnes being removed from the ocean overall. For context: 750 billion metric tonnes of water has been added since 1880, and the water level has only changed by ~ +30 cm... they've managed to change it by a couple dozen metres.

Saw this mod awhile ago, always felt sad that it got halted, since it had a lot of cool ideas and potential (Especially intriguing to see a Gordon-less world, and Alyx's suit design is awesome! The parkour system also fits and seems real fun, given Alyx's nature of being more "flashy" with her movement). Glad to see it's alive again!
One could say this is the Half-Life Alyx we never got.
This is so surreal to see you covering a project that i am a part of. I hope you enjoyed my levels. Most of my work has been on the combat demo level.
I saw that project year or two ago and i was very sad when they stopped working on it, and now IT'S BACK BABY.
Seems like the perfect kind of mod to introduce souped up assassins with AI that can parkour to keep up with you during gunfights!
Time to bring back the Combine assassins for this one
This, Half Life Inhuman and Raising the Bar Redux are in my top most awaited hl mods!

I remember trying to get the original source maps and stuff for this mod to work, all its scrapped ideas and such looked really cool, and that soundtrack absolutely kicks ass.
I can't wait to see what the new team does with it, I hope it works out better this time.
i hope these guys from lambda can finally put this on its tracks, lots of great mods lost throught time either due to trama or awful issues

This looks absolutely incredible; I particularly love how scrappy and fluid the combat looks. Immediately different from high TTK in vanilla.
It's the same TTK. I think it's recorded on easy or normal difficulty. I hope they will make enemies healthier (or deal more damage to compensate their health), but faster and more accurate for hard difficulty. I played HL2 many times and hard difficulty doesn't feel hard at all, soldiers need lots of changes to the AI.
everything about the gameplay looks so clean, movement, gunplay, animations, it looks so professionally done
and I can't put my finger on it but I think the run and gun gameplay looks much more hl1 than hl2 ya know?
I completely agree! It feels like I'm watching someone bounce around like in Half-Life 1 enemy to enemy but in the source engine.
Perhaps the Quake roots of Half-Life are showing in this mod a little more than retail Half-Life 2?
Glad the mod is being revived. The premise is good and could kinda serve as an Alyx 2 in ways. Hopefully this team can finish it or atleast make it further into development

When I first heard about this mod, it was already cancelled then, but I had a feeling that someone will continue making this. Glad to see that I was right.
If this gets a steam release I could see this going down with mods like entropy zero echoes. This might even become a full on game like black mesa or gmod

As someone that got to make concept art for Vance a long while ago I'm glad that it's chugging along despite all the drama. Hopefully the new lads do some good work.

but not only that, it does not feel like a mod OST but sounds like it would absolutely fit in a valve-made title.
its bumping and thumping but does not interrupt from the thundering and rattling of your guns.

Just want to say that mp7 with the GP-25 under barrel nade launcher is genius and looks amazing,love the reload animations aswell.
I actually really, really like how they have structured the git lab project folder, going back 15 years now, I remember trying to get into HL2 modding, and the one thing that kept me away was the messy nature of the workflow at the time, because I would build in the HL2 steam directory, and that game was already 15gb, (considered very big at the time in relation to an 80gb hard drive), I’d easily run out of hard drive space or an update to the game would be pushed that would break my changes, so there were a few technical limits as well as trying to get my head around what to actually ship, but I can see looking at this games repo, there is a clean sense of abstraction, like they even supply the raw game assets in another repo. - I'm currently working on a quake 1 mod with the intention of also transition over to half-life 1, maybe eventually half-life 2 idk, but I have bookmarked this mod and I'm going to give it a go, it looks like it doesn't even need half-life 2 to run, but I'll be sure to test it with a clean copy of HL2 off steam if I can't get it to work.
I'm going to take the directory structure of this mod back to mine and incorporate it into my workflow.
I've worked with a number of different game engines over the years and it's nice that this has pulled back the curtain for hl2, and that I can kind of just see by looking at how it's all put together, it becomes a big helping motivator for game development...
Setting up development environments is usually half the battle when it comes to game dev. (imo)

sometime ago I was on a team directed by the same guy that was reviving this mod I was tasked to make a game on UE5. I stopped working on it a few month later because I was seeing that the guy couldn't manage 2 team and his personal life. But seeing now that the mod is back with a new eam is really cool !

Used to date someone who used to work on this mod. Its really great to see what could've been a dumpster fire turned into something really sweet. Even if this doesn't get finished this is a amazing alpha!
The weapon sounds and animations look incredible
Oh the combat looks like fun, the first person animations look legitimately high quality, and the soundtrack slaps and fits the combat pace perfectly, I hope this gets finished.

using your prosthetic leg as a melee weapon should be fun but I think the clanking noise it makes while you're running could get annoying

Interesting. I know someone that used to work for Vance in the soundtrack department, but that was about 8 years ago at this point. I also don't know if it even was this exact Vance. It was gonna be a prequel and feature a mini version of Dog, and I think it was even gonna have Alyx be smaller in height than the usual player. I think that concept was scrapped when HLA was announced, if not already a few years earlier.

sounds like Alyx Story, the creator for that didn't have time to keep working on it so they made the resources available for download a couple of years ago
Hell yeah! I was so sad when it got canned. Glad to see it back. This, HL2 Inhuman, Black Mesa: Blue Shift, we've got some insanely good mods on the way it seems.
My headcanon is Godon stayed in Xen to ensure the Xenian creatures don't come back to Earth, like the Doomguy in Doom 64.

I heard tell of a GoldSrc mapping competition being planned, which I'm really interested in, but that was a long time ago so I'm not sure if it's been cancelled or something. Hey there! Yes I did wanted to host a GoldSrc comp a long time ago but due to *various* different reasons I wasn't able to pull it off.
I'm once again revisiting the idea and hope to host a comp in the near-ish future (October/November). But again, depends on the circumstances I'm in and how things thing in the next months.

i have to say though the default hud color being red gives me anxiety, it's like everything is in permanent danger mode

Honestly loving the faster movement and more aggressive playstyle, but still punishes mistakes. Hope to those utilized grabbity gloves used too.

The music on that awesome combat scene reminds me a lot of payday 2 soudntracks. I love it, makes it really intense and makes you feel badass.
Some things from the mod remind me of Half life 2 Raising the Bar redux. Mostly the shotgun and alyx's auto pistol

this is how the shotgun should have worked in half life 2. i mean thats what spas is all about. even shotgunner combine soldier in HL2 uses it this way. so cool.

awesome! hope alex has a voice actress, it's like half life meets mirrors edge. HL Vance is kinda like a sequel to HL Alyx, how that game altered the time line, removing freeman from the picture and revived her dad. Gman is a powerful time altering entity. He wants to see Alyx go through the similar events Gordon has and see if she can survive the war while in the original time line, Gordon has to find gman and stop him and save alyx from being trapped in gmans contract. Alyx and Gordon fight gman and the combine together in their hev suits like half life decay. Gman and the combine are one and the same.
Alyx does have a VA. Vance is unconnected to HLA

You know what would be cool, if Gordon like showed up eventually or something. Like he was surviving in Xen for the past 20 years in the caves Nobel 6 style. They could do like a Metal Gear Solid 2 thing with having the previous MC become a bad ass "cutscene" character. I mean by this point this man is a fucking legend seen by most people as a living act of god. I can see him with a torn up trashy HEV suit, eyepatch, and tattered rope.

Man not many single player HL2 campaigns excite me because they are essentially just expansions of HL2, but this take looks dope!
Someone should make a mod where Alyx has the HEV armor from Vance during battle scenes. It's kind of weird seeing her absorb a ton of bullets while wearing normal clothes
