I had a Fox (not a Novafox), a Frog, and a gen1 Avante. Sold the Avante years ago and kick myself for it now that it's a collectors item. The Frog got lost to time (and probably my mother's rabid cleaning habits), and I still have my Fox, proudly on display in all of its ragged glory.
boostaholic 71 Well there’s lots of Tamiya re-releases now 😊. So there’s plenty of choice. You can get a new Grasshopper or Hornet or if you want 4wd, I’d suggest the Mantra Ray, all these kits are reasonably priced 😊👊🏻
I still have a bunch of spare parts for it. It was stolen from my house about 15 years ago. They only took the car and nothing else. I think the sad thing is it probably landed up in the dump because it didnt drive.
Hey Glen, follow the ch a lot, keep em coming! Can’t believe I missed this video! My 2nd Tamiya car. Happen to love the look like a few of us. Many of the 4wd’s you think look “Stunning” I don’t care for so like you say. It’s all personal choice & one thing is.. we ALL love Tamiya & RC & that’s the main thing. Looking forward to the 2020 videos! You’ve covered almost everything haha. Later mate.
Did you get my message about the Tamtech Gear Fox? Quite rare now. Have a mint one up for grabs 😬😎 I’m a Notts lad in FL so not too far for shipping 🤘🏽 Let me know if that interests you. Sent it to Gavin at kicks too but haven’t heard back yet. ✌🏽
Looks great, Glenn 👍🏼 I'm doing some research and this popped up! I'm getting an og Fox very soon. Just did the deal this evening. Can't wait to get stuck in!
I got a Fox for Christmas 1985 and I was allowed to have it earlier so I could build it and use it on Christmas Day. I painted it the same as the box art and i thought it was stunning. I was a bit disappointed when I drove it because it kept rolling over and scratching that lovely body work.
You needed to find and add the front sway bar. Tamiya knew these handled like crap, so they had this little kit for it for about $15 that fixed the body roll in hard cornering. They're probably unobtanium now.
I had it this when I was 15 years old. I'm 42 now. I haven't got the foggiest clue whatever happened to it. I have a few mystery totes in my shed. I will check to see if its in one of those
I remember as a kid reading the ad for this in Radio control car action and the ad said something like 0-80 feet in like 2 or 3 seconds and thinking that was cool, lol!
A couple of faults I recall of the one I've got was that the speed control which was a compact arrangement inside the tub was prone to run too hot & running with the Technigold motor, used to chew through the rear dog leg wish bones.
Awesome video! I'm rebuilding my original Fox and the gears are perfect. Cleaned and oiled a bit. The wheels always seem a bit stiff in comparison to my Falcon and so on. Is that typical? The drive shafts are greased and the bearings seem good. Thanks for any info. Bob
It's when I rotate them. When I'm spinning the wheels of my other cars they turn freely. My Fox takes a bit more effort to spin them for whatever reason. My driveshafts and gears are lubed so I'm a little perplexed.
Robert Frazer No it definitely shouldn’t be tuff to turn them 🤔. Is the gearbox and diff built correctly? It’s very easy to get something the wrong way round 🤷🏼♂️
@@tashalousdadful - I know the source of your problem! So if you take the pinion gear cover off to expose the motor mounting screws, the top one is fixed, and the lower one has this funny little metal plate that looks like a letter D with spikes on the top and bottom. The spikes fit into one of three corresponding notches, and it mattered which way the D faced. The hole was offset, so depending on which notch, and which way it faced, it moved the motor back and forth slightly so you could run different sized pinion gears, and still have the teeth mesh correctly with the middle idler gear. If you didn't get that little washer in the right spot, facing the right way, your gears wouldn't mesh correctly, and would either skip on hard acceleration, or bind your transmission. I suspect your pinion gear is binding your idler gear. If it seems close, simply try flipping that little D plate the other way and see if your binding issue improves. If it gets worse, back it off the next notch back, keeping the flip. That should improve it. If it still seems tight, flip the plate over again in the new notch and you should be golden.
I had this the Blackfoot and the lunch box. Only thing I didn't like about tamiya is when the battery in the cars got low they seemed to have a mind of their off on their own and you had to run after them. I have no idea what I ever did to them. Can't find them anywhere. It was an expensive hobby back then in 1989. Can't even imagine what is is today
LOL, yep. The Fox had to have BEC (battery eliminator circuitry) due to space constraints inside the chassis, so the speed controller and steering servos ran off the main battery. So when your battery got low, those servos would stall in whatever position they were in when the voltage got low enough, and you had to close the distance a bit to bump the signal and they'd snap back to neutral once you got close enough.
I'd love it if you could... I've got my original Fox still, but I'm afraid to run it in case I crashed it (which I do) and it broke something that can't be replaced nowadays, like the chassis (which would break right where the front end attached to the frame box.)
@@TAMIYALegends I went out today and bought battery pack and charger. Ordered the crystals off of eBay. The servos and old Trinity engine twitched and turned when I plugged the battery in. So she is alive. Hopefully the controller still works and in a few days il give her the first run she has had in 20 years.. thanks for the video waking up my childhood love of these cars. I remember staying up all night building RC cars from bits n pieces I found at garage sales and the trading post, spending my well earned pocket money. I discarded the original acons servos at the time swapping them out for an electronic speed controller I salvaged from a ruined Avante (also where the Trinity came from). I'm keen to make this little thing scream again. Used to race other kids in the empty parking lots at night steeling charge off of truck batteries from lorries parked over night. .. if memory serves me correct my fox was the fastest car after scoring the ruined Avante and stripping it for bits.
One of my favs - not a racer out of the box, but after a few mods can be a very nice car to race in vintage class. I have a show-car Fox, which will never see the track, but I have the race Fox. Check it out here dominating this track here in Australia. ruclips.net/video/b7BsMYtT9u4/видео.html
The Fox had a totally enclosed custom chassis, which was exclusive to the Fox, AFAIK. It was actually waterproof, so you could slog it through some really watery mud without fear of mucking up your electronics. The weak point was where the front end attached to the frame box. Too many wall hits and that's where it would break. It had a 3 speed throttle plate that used a couple resistors to eat up the power for the lower speeds. I just took them off and they've been lost to the ages, but I still have my Fox, in most of its glory. The one thing that made this car a race contender was the addition of a front sway bar. Obviously, Tamiya knew this car handled like crap because of the massive body roll in turns (the single front shock would simply shift a large amount of roll to the opposite wheel before it compressed). Also, when it would do this, it affected the steering. So there was an official Tamiya kit you could buy for about $15.00 that added a sway bar, and it largely fixed all of those problems. I also added an aftermarket kit so I could mount a large shock from an RC10 on the front of the Fox, giving it the better damping from the more adjustable aluminum body shocks.
imo the fox and the hotshot are the best looking rc cars ever

Excellent 🤩
Thanks for watching my friend 👊🏻
I totally agree with you Adam, It was on off my two first RC cars along with the Grasshopper and I think it looks awesome 🤗👍

The Fox was one of the most authentic looking sand rail type buggies that Tamiya put out.

I’m painting my Nova Fox right now. Have MCI original Fox decals for it.
