Another tip... Don't run the bathroom fan while doing this. It will draw up the odors from the black tank while it is open. Thanks for the great video.
When I first bought my trailer and got it home I noticed there was no water in the bowl to cover the seal. I was and still am a newbie but knew water was necessary to keep the seal from drying out. I added a bit of water and when I checked the next day-no water in the bowl. Not knowing any better, I called the salesman. He said to not worry about it because there did not need to be water in the bowl, the seal would be fine. So, since I wasn’t born under a mushroom, I immediately went to a couple of Facebook groups and asked for information and help. Got several varied replies so I went to RUclips university. That’s where I learned about plumbers grease and seating the seal. This took care of the leak, but your video is much more informative and I want to thank you.
Thank you so much for your videos. I am a new travel trailer owner and I couldn’t figure out why my trailer that I just bought this past October was smelling so bad no matter how much I cleaned it. The repair guy I called suggested getting a new toilet from him for 600$ to install since my wasn’t holding water. I did everything you showed in your video. Problem fixed and smell is gone. You are a godsend 😊❤🍻
With having same toilet as well, never knew that the seal comes out so easily! Have always maintained seal with Vaseline but never knew there was a special lubricant for the toilet seal.. Thanks, as usual, for the “ inside “ info !! Hehe 😜 Happy Trails!!!!!!!!!! Many Blessings on Da’road
I actually just did this on our 3 month old trailer the other day. I think it sitting dry on a dealer lot for awhile dried it out and this was such an easy fix.
Thank you for the tips and video .. I had this issue and I ordered new seals on Amazon they are very inexpensive , in fact I bought a 3 pack of new seals for my Dometic toilet for under $15 .. My toilet was badly clogged and I used the toilet brush to try and clear the blockage , unfortunately the handle on the brush wasn't long enough so I used a broom handle to finally clear the blockage and then I poured hot/warm water into the toilet several times and emptied the black tank and used my black tank flushing hose hook up to try and clear any remaining blockage , and drained my black tank as usual ..This happened when we were out camping , so I found this video very helpful and ordered replacement seals from Amazon right from the campground and they arrived the day we returned home .. Thanks again ..
Mine started losing water last time out. Ordered a new seal and installed it. It still didn't hold water. After painstakingly removing the toilet and trying to remove the bowl part, I turned it upside down and saw the screws that hold it together. While I was getting ready to get tools, I noticed the pivot point for the valve was out of the hole. Pried it back in with a wrench, turned the toilet over and put water in. No leaks! I left the new seal in. Moral of the story is: try not to let the pedal slip while pushing it down. The return spring is strong and will close very fast knocking the pivot out of whack. It can be easily fixed with the toilet still mounted. Just need a flashlight and a long screwdriver. My tank was empty so no stink. It can be fixed in one breath if not empty. ; - )
Didn't know that the seal could be replaced so easily on that toilet. Thanks for the information. I also had a problem with a dometic toilet and one of the solutions to taking care of it, it was a new toilet, was to put hot water in there and heat up the seal then the reshape it. After reshaping then let it sit with a bunch of cool water. Once I did that I had no more problems with that toilet the whole time we owned the RV. So not sure if that's a tip to pass long or not.
Gorgeous scene of the Bridge of the Gods in the outro 😉 The restaurant on the Cascade Locks, Oregon side, Charburger, has been a family favorite for over 50 years . My family stopped there on our way from Aloha to Goldendale all the time.
Exactly what I was looking for. I have a 1/2 bath toilet in our new trailer that we don't use but it is not holding water. Probably not installed correctly from the manufacturer 🥺 Looks like a very simple fix 👍 Thank you for all you do and the information you share 👍👍👌
Thanks for the tip on the silicone grease to use on the seal. I just replaced my seal and it was still leaking slowly. Grease ordered from your link and I expect that will cure the slow leak.
Thank you for this video, I was able to do this job myself and fix this nagging issue. (Ours was leaking and ended up being mineral deposit buildup due to hard water.) Thanks!
I just wanted to let you know that fixed mine today, I cleaned the seal with a dry paper towel and then coated it with Danco silicone faucet grease and now it holds water again. Thanks for your video and suggestions.
Ok we have that exact toilet, just replaced the seals and it was working great BUT I then put a hose down to fill up and clean out the black tank (about two weeks after replacing the seal) and since that clean out the hasn’t been a good seal on the toilet.
Our RV is 15 years old. We have the original toilet with it’s original seal. We are not full timers, so I have to take extra steps to keep the seal in good condition. The seal can dry out, so I try and make sure to always have water in the bowl (RV antifreeze in the winter). I also lube the seal twice a year with synthetic grease. It’s important not to use petroleum based grease. This seems to work for us.
Excellent video. My previous two RV ‘s had the same Dometic toilet and they worked great. One lasted 8 years without having any work or seal replacement on it. My 2023 Winnebago came with the Thetford brand. No leaks but the seal loses water after about 15 minutes. I just went out and tried cleaning as you showed. Simple and if need be I’ll put lubricant on it . Yes, a bandaid but too HOT here in Arizona to pull out and replace the seals. Maybe in October!!! Thank you, excellent video.
@@sharoninman7127 Are you referring to the base seal, and is it stuck to your flooring? I keep plastic scrapers and they have been effective with seals or sealants and not damage my coach. Hopefully this helps
@@sharoninman7127 Boy, that’s a tough one to answer. If you have the Dometic toilet, it generally is an easy pull out of the seal. Not sure what is stopping yours. If you have a Thetford toilet, then it is harder to remove the seal. On my Thetford toilet I had to remove the toilet and unbolt the porcelain top section from the base to access the seal. Which toilet do you have?
Exactly the video I needed! I have the same toilet and just decided to not hold water so I am going ot need to replace that seal I think at this point.
Wow! The first video I pull up has the same rv as mine but you also up graded to the same toilet I did. With the same problem. Great video and now a new subscriber. 😊
I didn’t realize it was such an easy thing to replace. I’ve been cleaning mine and adding gasoline but I think it’s time to replace the seal. Thank you for the info.
I had to unplug mine, pushed the seal in, caught just in time , reset seal but still leak on left side only. When I was unplugging I pushed everything in: seal and unlatched left side of flapper, so had to reach down and reset it into its grove, fixed my small post plug/seal loss leak.
Great information. Ours is dripping about a tablespoon of water after it flushes. It is intermittent is really hard to locate, however I think it drips out of the foot mechanism a few seconds after it is flushed. I don’t think it’s the valve. Driving me nuts
Had same issue many years ago, i just add Oatey Silicone Grease when i store my TT (apply liberally). It rehabbed the gasket so it holds water again. And I still always add the grease when I store. 11yr old TT and have never had to replace the toilet gasket.
I have the same toilet as you do. I also purchased the sprayer for it even though one review said it leaked. Ours doesn’t leak and I’m not sure how we did without it. The toilet stays clean without wiping or brushing up afterwards. Simply spray with flush of solid waste and it washes straight down

Question on the 310. Underneath the seal where is goes down towards the floor, the inside is not a smooth surface, but rather a larger opening with a triangle shaped plastic part on both sides that opens the valve. Inside this area it has gotten quite dirty and is all but impossible to clean. Do you have any ideas on how to more effectively clean this area? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
