  • In this video, we will go over the step-by-step process of repairing the Dometic 300 toilet on my 2020 Keystone Bullet 243BHS. We did this after noticing a strong urine smell coming from a recently replaced toilet. Having previously replaced the toilet two times, we decided to take a different approach this time and disassembled the toilet and rebuilt it.

We have the same issue and are in the process of fixing the toilet. Please explain in layman's terms what causes this issue. Also, Please let me know if this fix has worked for you for 2 years since you posted the video. If its not a permanent fix, which toilet would you recommend in place of the Dometic 300?

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  4 месяца назад +4

Let me answer your three questions in reverse. Dometic has a toilet (model 310) with a ceramic bowl that does not have the same issue as the model 300. I would upgrade to this model but do not have enough room between the back of the toilet and bathroom wall. If memory serves, you need 10.5” from the bolts on the toilet base and the back wall to upgrade. Q2: the fix has worked well long term and highly recommend doing it before installing a new 300 toilet. Q1: I only have theory why the issue occurs as Dometic is not inclined to reveal why the problem happens. My take is that a vacuum suction occurs at the seal between the inner and outer plastic bowls when getting up off the toilet. Over time, this becomes worse and more liquids are pulled into the outer bowl. Hope this helps!

I am going to try this! Our brand new toilet has smelled from day one! We call our trailer our Covid trailer! They got a kittle break in this terrible time and fast tracked trailers on back order to survive the pandemic. I didn’t blame them for this, but oh the problems we have had! We gave up calling for warranty issues and began fixing things ourselves. We love, love, love, our trailer, but it has been disappointing in some areas. I believe you just helped us with the most embarrassing problem! Thank you so much!

I wish I had the ability to communicate with words just how wonderful and relatable this video is. I live in an RV and there is much to love, but being forced to become an expert and diagnose and fix your own rv issues because of failures of sellers, companies, and repair people is not my favorite part of RVing. This is just so relatable. It is so noble of you to make this video to help others. Thank you.

Great video! Great advice! We've been chasing down this exact problem for several years and, as soon as I watched this, I was pretty sure this was our exact problem. Your instructions were great and the disassembly was pretty easy. The re-assembly was aided greatly by using the Ace Hardware 10-in-1 multi-tool (2 of them) to put together to fasten the FOUR hex-head screws. You mentioned that an extra-long screwdriver should be used, but I found using the 5/16" hex driver on the multi-tool worked MUCH better! There's no slipping out of the slot then as you would have with a straight screwdriver. We've been out on several camp ventures since applying your fix... and regular inspections appear to show it's 100% solved! Thanks so very much for your great video.

    Excellent video!
We purchased a used 2020 Cherokee Grey Wolf Limited camper that’s in great condition.
After the second outing, I could no longer handle the smell. It smelled like a stadium urinal.
I did remove the toilet and sure enough there was sewage build up. The manufacture label on the toilet was 6/4/2019.
I did attempt to seperate the bowl from the base but ended up cracking it.
Subsequently, I replaced the toilet with the 310 model.
I also want to mention that the manufacturer did not have the flange which was broken screwed into the floor. The flange was seated onto a metal ring that was screwed to the floor by two screws which held the T bolts.
I replaced the flange as well which I attached to a pvc pipe which was inserted into a rubber gasket that lead to the black tank.

Thanks for the video. We just completed an outing with our 2020 Puma and noticed a strong urine smell at the beginning of the trip. We found your video and did indeed determine the 'outer' area was full of urine that has seeped through the seal. We were able to soak up a lot of the urine and then poured vinegar in the area to counter the smell while we completed our trip. I will follow your video this week to hopefully correct the problem as you have shown. It is frustrating that this model of toilet has such a problem. Last year I had seen issues with this toilet and some mention of a recall but after calling Dometic they said there was no recall and could only be replaced under warranty. Since we did not have the problem then we could not get it replaced. We are now out of warranty, but hey such is the life with an RV. Thanks again.

They are sending me a new 300 model but will not arrive until September. However, if they have not changed anything with the design then it will still have the same issue I assume. Meanwhile I took the current toilet apart and cleaned it up and will let it and the seals dry over night. Tomorrow I will caulk and reinstall and hopefully that will cure the problem.

Thank you for this "How To" video. We have a 2018 Winnebago Micro Mini that has/had the Dometic 300 and it developed the problems you described. I contacted Dometic, and they declined to replace the unit as it was outside the "warranty period". I did 2 things:
1 Purchased, and installed, the Dometic 310. It mounts VERY close to the wall, but it fits and is a much nicer toilet.
2 I went through your repair/rebuild steps. (We now have a spare should the 310 develop the problem as well)
I noticed a couple of differences with mine.....
There was only one ring between on the sleeve between the internal and external bowls. The ring on mine is the thicker ring that is shown in your video.
There was obvious leakage through the seal between the outer bowl and the base....the seal you did not use the silicone seal on.
Before sealing the locations, I pulled the flush ball seal, thoroughly cleaned it, liberally coated all surfaces, in the groove and top and bottom surfaces, with silicone dielectric grease, and installed the flush ball seal back in the outer shell. I did this to prevent any squeeze-out of the silicon seal/caulk that I LIBERALLY applied on the internal rings and the external gasket from sticking to (or interfering with the flush ball seal.....there is very little clearance between the seal and the shells)
Oh, one other thing I did differently, I took the water flush valve out of the base. Doing so made it easy to haul each half to the water hose for rinsing and turning things around to better clean without having to wrestle both shells.

I just did same repair but also used plumbers tape . Directly on plastic bowls and then slid on the gaskets with silicone. As a note there was only 1 gasket on the neck of the inner bowl . Once everything was put together I could tell it was very snug and much more so compared to when I took the 2 bowls apart . Once out together I noticed while looking into bowl of toilet a small gap between the flush valve and upper bowl so I used addition silicone all around the base of the flush valve . so I have a 2019 Keystone and in May 2023 we found this problem. I bought a new Dometic 300 (only one that fits with the wall clearance) and installed it. 8 nights of camping later the smell is back. If you can replace the 300 model with the 310 ceramic bowl model, it may be worth it. The main issue is you need more clearance behind toilet to accommodate the larger size 310 model. The rough in measurement goes from 8.5" to 10" from the 300 to the 310 model, so be sure you have this amount of space from the center bolts to the wall behind the toilet. Here is a link to etrailer for several of the models: www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-RV_Toilets-pm-Dometic.aspx

Take at look at my video on the water pump issue if you haven’t already: RV Water Pump Troubleshooting

Yeah, not sure why they kept using this toilet for so long. FYI, the fix I show in the video has worked well for over 100 nights of use after doing the fix.

My base seal is leaking since the 4 flathead screws are loose. Waiting for that special oblong gasket.

So you plan to replace the oblong gasket and reinstall the same toilet, correct?

John how did the repair hold up? Did it resolve the leak smell problem?

The fix as shown worked well over the long term. Still highly recommended doing this.

I noticed that I only have a single ring and not two. Should I just caulk over top of that ring?

    • @JohnMarucci

      That's what I would do.

@@JohnMarucci I had the same question - mine has a plastic spacer ring, and only a square ring. I plan to to caulk well over all, after acetone cleaning to remove any silicone grease and then a light (400 grit) sanding for better adhesion.

      Meant to write floor

The floor bolts should be removable as shown at timestamp: 6:00. A new toilet will come with these two bolts. You also likely can find replacement bolts online. For example, here is the Dometic replacement gasket kit from my Amazon store: amzn.to/3EXYTuz

So this doesn't apply to the porcelain bowl models? We have a 310 plastic bowl and are going to a 320 porcelain

Correct, it should not apply to the porcelain models.
