Chess players! The Pirc Defense strikes again and this time it was against super GM Karjakin who played the Austrian attack. I know we studied this variation in lesson # 73, but we had not covered what Karjakin did on move # 5. I hope you find it useful!

Chess is an intellectual battle where players are exposed to numerous mental processes such as analysis, attention to detail, synthesis, concentration, planning and foresight. Psychological factors are also present on and off the board; playing Chess stimulates our imagination and creativity. Every single move a player makes is the result of a deep analysis based on the elements presented on the battlefield.
Chess in its essence teaches us psychological, sociological and even moral values. In a Chess game, both players start with the same amount of material and time. The fact that the white pieces move first is considered to be practically irrelevant -especially because a player typically plays one game as white and one game as black. Consequently, the final result of the battle solely depends on each player. It doesn’t matter if you win by taking advantage of your opponent’s mistakes or by simply avoiding mistakes yourself. Truth is that Chess is an extremely individual sport and our defeats can only be blamed on ourselves and no one else. And this, in the end, only benefits us because we learn to be and feel responsible for our actions and never come up with excuses to justify ourselves.
We also learn that when it comes to our victories on the board, our opponent's mistakes play a more significant role than our own skills. Let’s not forget that a Chess game without any mistakes would be a draw. This way, Chess provides us with another valuable life lesson: be humble at all times.

This Cuban kid is amazing. By making us understand the Pirc, he's showing us a path to start enjoying chess at a basic level, and it gets better from there. Awesome.
I agree. I've learned so much from Robert, it's insane. He is the greatest instructor on the internet. I learn from others, but his (many) lessons are so structured and clear. He's just a natural teacher. I don't know what he does outside of chess, but his teaching skills are off the chart.
pretty sure he's an adult.
Easily one of the best Chess teachers on this platform. I really only have time for daily games but I have seen my ELO rise so much in the past few months watching Robert!
💪😎
Yes, the Pirc can be scary against aggreive white play, but it's about patience and an understanding of the positions. NM Ramirez is a natural teacher!
My favorite chess player. Man I have learned so much from you!!! Gracias hermano!
Would love to see more pirc live games! Thanks again
today i went to my first OTB tournament. I've played 5 games and used KIA and The czech Pirc def. I won all of my games and therefore won the tournament thanks to you couch! Keep up the grate work, I am a huge fan!!! Thank you!
Congratulations! 👏💪 Thanks a lot for sharing this great news. It means a lot 🙌
Congratulations
I raised my elo from 540 to 1200 by playing KIng's indian and pirc def which i learned from you. Thank you so much Robert for the great contents. The problem is the times my opponents play so aggresively and they don't alow me to finish my opening i will lose all the process and thinking because i get mad and angry that i couldn't place all the pieces. It feels so bad.
NM Ramirez,
Just wanted to say thank you for all the videos you've done on the Pirc. I started playing it recently in large part because of your videos, and it's really been lots of fun. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
In any case, robert really thank u for all of ur contents.. maybe the pirc does not suit well for my chess style, but learning it It was fun and useful.. rally thanx coach again!
Not only are you giving me the ammunition I have always lacked playing Black, but you have also taught me how to correctly pronounce Pirc! Many thanks.
Very Helpful lesson!!Thanks Coach😄 ..I have actually not yet finished all the lessons till this point,But,I saw this was related to the pirc hence,I saw it
Excellent. Great teaching, many thanks UK
Awesome game. Learned a few more tips for my Pirc reper. Thanks Robert.
*repertoire
That's great video. Very useful continuation on the Pirc!! Thanks Robert
You are more than welcome, Miro! 👍
Another great explanation
Coach, as i had requested earlier too could you pls create a playlist for London System with most critical variations? I really learnt a lot from your lessons and am looking forward to advance my skills in the London opening..London system and pirc are my only two openings with which i play with.. thanks in advance coach..
A must, again 👍🇨🇵
Outstanding
very useful!
Awesome
The American GM, YS, used to play this way.
Another excellent lesson, thanks coach. BTW loving the Pirc and KID for black now. KIA for white... for some reason seems trickier.
What if white to move Bc4 instead of Be3?
@NM Robert Ramirez I am thinking of buying a Pirc book and I saw your recommendation, however, it is from 2007, 15 years ago, so I was hoping for a more updated recommendation from you? I am currently considering the one from Mihail Marin. Any other one? Many thanks!
I found your piric very good illustrated leasons open my apitate to play that variation in future
Is there a pgn file for the course?
I know some games of Poland Gm Krashenkov the way he played Czech pirc against Austrian attack
1e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 c6 4 f4 d5)
5 e5 Ng8) in a way to play closed position with tempo down similar in Caro Can fashion , the moves next (h5, Nh6, Bg4 or f5 out of the pawn chain , the game plan is to play on light squares)
thanks for info my friend.
Great
i am finding my self almost always losing against the spike variation ....could you do another video explaining more of the theory and main ideas? Thanks
Same for me.. i score better results playing anithing else.. Also openings that i dont know.. and i score better.. pirc does not suit my chess style, too passive
Hello! Of course 👍
what a game🔥🔥
really annoying to play against Bd3 c3 system
Good to see it played at the super GM level. Since most of us are BMs we should try to pick up from these games and lower the amount of blunders that we make.
Hey did you remove some of your videos becouse i cant find a specific video where you talked about c3 opening that can be played as black and white
Look under Playlists/Chess lessons/Chess Lesson #51. Is that it?
Hello! It should be either # 51 or # 69 👍
take with rook because when taking with the pawn we lose the control on f5
There is something weird with the way the letter T is said in these videos . Nice content 👌
I have learned a lot just watching this channel. I am not good enough yet (using pirc) for even 2300 rated (stockfish) as White will take 5 lines and leave me with 3 and I am just to confined. Then again no other open for black does any better for me at the same level. It's not the open - it is Combo of playing to fast and not seeing far enough. I tried out 2 games at 3000 - first game, it didn't use any open i know it just went into kill mode. (it opened with king pawn and a knight - then ran the night down to trade for a bishop - even wasting the moves it proceeded to rip me apart) Not even kidding. 2nd game i went full on offense as much as i could and did better. Lasted 36 turns (it was messy). Seems at higher levels "positional" rather goes out the window and must attack- defense will lose. This in itself is perhaps good to know. Seems to be a line between just trading pieces (that i need for my attack) and removing key defenders - cant just trade down (simplify) without a solid plan.
I have started playing pric whenever I get black pieces
This is likely my most ignorant question (of the week...) When would black use the Pirc vs. the Czech Pirc? Is it by "feel" or is the choice made by what White does? Very truly sorry if this was explained in an earlier video.
Hello! Welcome to the club 😎 That is actually an interesting question. It is rare to see, but it would basically be if White played, d3-Nf3-c3. But even when that happens, that system is not called Czech Pirc because the Czech Pirc is only when we do it as Black. Hope this makes sense 👍
Hi coach. Would love to see pirc as white. Love your content and I feel very in control playing the pirc.
I thought of f4 but thought f4 is possible when the center is locked , but you said f4 is there ,kindly explain how it was possible here thanks dear
Coach kindly explain f4 should be played when the center is locked .But in this game you played f4 , though center not locked
For the first time I am going in a National Amateur Chess Championship
See what I could do after seeing your videos
Love from INDIA
I am not a rated player
Had this game today... lost so here I am... LOL...
Wait 6:50 why cant we take the pawn?
Hello Caleb! If Nxd4, they can take our f6-knight 👍
Against 5. Bd3 e5, engine seems to think dxe5 is better than fxe5, and white retains a sizeable advantage.
Thank you for sharing 🙌👍
opps i tought f6 because he cant take that but R1g1 next f5 and then no enpassant for opponent
The tatoforker sounds like you. And uses your material. Is it you?
