- The core issues are explained in this video surrounding the controversy over the logging of old-growth coastal temperate rainforests in BC, in a video produced by the Endangered Ecosystems Alliance. Old-growth forests are vital to sustain endangered species, First Nations cultures (whose unceded lands these are), clean water, wild salmon, carbon storage, and for tourism and recreation.
Well over 90% of the grandest old-growth forests in BC with the largest trees have been logged and time is running out fast as the industrial logging of these last old-growth stands occurs at a breakneck speed, spanning an area over 5 times the size of the city of Vancouver each year.
Most forests in BC are second-growth now, and if the BC government fostered a value-added, sustainable second-growth forest industry they could sustain forestry employment levels in BC while protecting the remaining old-growth forests.

To see the spotted owl was by the thousands is now down to 3 just 3 owls isn't just sad it's absolutely embarrassing and despicable of humans and how they only care about money more people want the financial results in their pockets not the nature in their forests .. I shared this and I continue to support the fight to keep the old growth forests alive. Tyvm for that incredible video
I live in Siberia and here it's very easy to tell the difference between old-growth and new-growth forest. There are just entirely different conifer species.
It is not just species of tree... The animal diversity, the health of the groundwater, insects, birds, mammals, fish are all affected in unhealthy forests.
Protect not just forests but every type of ecosystems in the world
Lol... you are 70 years late for that good advice... its gone now!
I am standing with you in this cause from Ontario!🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳
protect those forests at all costs!
I absolutely love this mini docementary 👍🥰
Thanks for your hard work in trying to protect these amazing trees!
Great wisdom here. Thank you.
This is such a great informative video! Thank you for creating !!
Wonderful informative view of these magnificent old-growth forests and heart breaking to see such continued destruction.
Thank you so much for all you do to preserve this crucial ecosystem
We must protect old-growth in productive forest zones. Government is lying, seeing only short-term value, not long-term climate and eco-system protection.
Fantastic video! If only our governments would consider the true threats of the global catastrophe and act.
Wow. I lived in the Humboldt County region and worked on some of the restoration project in various areas that were loged in the 60s and '70s. I did not know that the same processes that were basically abolished in the US are being allowed to continue in Canada.
Amazing film
Yall are amazing!
the elder is very correct ! here! the states! south America the jungles !
If you've ever been in a truly ancient forest you know the difference. Second growth is so different, it's like a fancy tree farm in comparison. There is so little left of productive old growth, I don't understand why they can't stick to logging second growth.
FIGHT. PLEASE.
Crazy how different old growth looks on the west coast compared to the east
Well its long gone now... not even sure this gentleman seen very many of them standing... what a shame
Crazy. Takes nature millennia to craft these delicate ecosystems. All to be ruined in just a few short generations of human hubris.
I don't understand how people who look at forests like these and want to destroy them for profit have any love or friends in their life. How do such heartless monsters trick others into thinking they have souls?
Its a human nature... we are space Parasites, travelling on asteroids from our last unfortunate planet... its almost time to get back to our primitive form (DNA and acid etc) to find and other one. that's what we are...
Yes to these truths.
Wow! The Luna tree sit happened from 1997 to 1999. And here we are in 2023 doing the same stupid stuff.
🙏🤲🙏
OLD GROWTH like IVORY. This is how I view it. from my sailboat in SE Alaska
It's devastating to see those giant tree stumps. Knowing the only reason they've fallen was for financial gain. Do they even use old growth lumber for construction purposes? It would be even more outrageous and wasteful if all that ancient wood wasn't at least saved in structures, but simply milled into pulp to be pressed into wood pellets for burning in a furnace...
The big problem facing the environmentalists is the exclusion of "Joe Citizen" from the equation. We are all British Columbians we all succeed with healthy old growth forests. Burt excluding non natives is a mistake! I can not tell you how many times I have been told where to go by my brothers and sisters of our indigenous peoples. It is there land - Period "that is the mistake they make" It belongs to all of us! Let the elders and the indigenous manage it - but make no mistake we ALL own the land!
The forests will come back 1000 years from now when these companies get their way and there aren’t any more people to cut them down.
Nevertheless, even if these forests eventually regrow, they will never replicate the virgin forest that _originally_ grew there before human disturbance.
man kind wants progress. once olf growth trees are cut they are gone and regrowth is different. they have a long life like californis redwoods and look at the mess in the amazon rain forests.
Losing integrity for short-term Forestry, not very sustainable as demonstrated by the major Stand replacing fires, often Arson caused, racing through such degraded Foorest stands after Modern Forest practices, do not have the thick barked, large tree bole, higher fuel ladders, and Site resilient features of more mature Forest groves and stands. Structurally much less complex, even-aged stands have not been effective in scenarios of hotter, more severe Fires upsetting vast areas that have been clearcut, managed for short term exploitation.
Logging Old Growth forests is a sin, and God is coming for the sinners. Run, sinners, run!
