As an elite athlete, with a natural talent for art and school (in the microcosm i grew up in at least) i never had to try to do anything. School in the US is already so dumbed down, so it was easy to succeed with basically no effort. But as an adult, there's no system in place for you to coast through or be rewarded simply for having gifts. You have to go out and apply yourself, and even though i understood the theory behind hard work and what is required to be successful, i was spoiled rotten by an easy life, and so anything that wasn't easy, felt very very difficult. I never developed the emotional, psychological skillset to fail, and fail productively. All these things I learned in my 20s, i would have learned as a kid or teenager if i wasn't spoiled with natural gifts. 98% of people with talent are lazier than other people that had to apply themselves to achieve the same results.
