This was a ballad, most of Billy's stuff is harder with a lot of punk influence, but those did well on the radio as well. To see a better representation of his music I think you should try White Wedding, or Rebel Yell.

Billy is still making good music! So many great songs to go through ❤
His writing is poetry-esque. It often makes you work for the meaning.
The backup singers are saying the title is French.

I'm glad you started with this track.....be sure to check out his song Cradle Of Love.
Side note.....Billy has a small part in The Doors movie....as much as you like The Doors, you should watch that movie. Val Kilmer as Jim......directed by Oliver Stone.
    Peace From Pennsylvania ✌️

This one is a guilty pleasure, for sure. When that guitar riff comes steaming in during the breakdown, I lose it. It's like the bass is some kinda hypnotic vibe lulling you into submission before Steve Stevens just lets it rip.

Dude, don't worry about the video. The video is always of secondary importance. The most important thing is the song itself. Even Billy's look or what he wearing. That is not important. Don't worry about that because the music is the thing that is important.

Music videos in the 80's were the wild west. No one knew what they were doing, and they were all doing it on a shoestring budget. In a lot of cases, it's a bad idea to watch the video with the song, because you'll fall down a rabbit hole trying to parse it when what was really happening was, "We wanted it to look cool, and also we had no money."

    • @robbob5302
      @robbob5302 8 месяцев назад +1

It was the 80s. The video was there because every hit song needed a video.
There was a very tiny group of people, making videos for everybody on the radio.
They ran out of creative ideas fast.
      Don’t overthink it.

    • @user-gu7kk5zk2b
      @user-gu7kk5zk2b Месяц назад

You're supposed to let the whole song wash over you first .THEN you try to figure it out after hearing many times and you're down the rabbit hole already. Not a good choice for introduction to Billy. Try Rebel Yell next.

Back when MTV was popular people could have jobs as music video directors. The record labels would sometimes give these directors huge budgets to use. They would make artistic statements with videos that had nothing to do with the song. For better examples of Billy's sound i suggest doing White Wedding & Rebel Yell next. Both are great rocking songs. If you get a chance check out Billy's VH-1 Storytellers concert. Music is good and some of the stories of how he came up with the songs are hilarious.

Billy Idol often talked to the late David Bowie, RIP. Idol introduced Nile Rodgers to Bowie in 1982. Thus, they recorded and produced Let's Dance 💃, the bestselling album for Bowie.
Written by Billy Idol and Stevie Stevens, who is on guitars 🎸. 40 years 🎂.
The title of the song is sung in French "les yeux sans visage" by Perri Lister. The music video us based on the the French movie 🎥 of the same title.
    Great 👍 1980s song 🎵
Suggested video 📹: Billy Idol sings Rebel Yell.

I love Let's Dance. One of my favorite songs from the time period. And the fact that Stevie Ray Vaughan is on guitar just seals the deal for me. I never knew Billy Idol introduced Nile Rodgers to DB! Thanks for that.

Nile Rodgers tells the story. " I was in a New York City club. Mick Jagger was drinking with Billy Idol, who was drunk 🥴. Nevertheless, he was conscious enough to introduce me to David Bowie. " The full story is from interviews of Nile Rodgers. Funny 😆

There are a number of good Billy Idol songs/music videos. Here is an interesting story behind one of the music videos.
In the late-1980s (I think), Billy Idol was in a bad motorcycle accident, in which he broke his leg. When the music video for his song, “Cradle Of Love”, was made, Idol appeared in the music video in a seated position, from the chest up. His appearance in the music video was basically a cameo appearance on a wall poster, with a unique storyline depicted in the music video. It is a very entertaining music video.

Billy Idol is worth diving into. He can be a vibe like he is here and he can be a total rocking rebel. I really like this song and that double clap is a great hook. He was an 80s icon and has a whole catalog to choose from. His lips were his trademark. "Hot In The City", "White Wedding", "Dancing With Myself", "Rebel Yell", "Catch My Fall", are my favorites.
80s videos are very hit and miss. MTV was new, music videos were new, and sometimes artists tried to create something very esoteric and clever and many times it just came off as weird. Everyone was looking to make that video that people talked about. Sometimes, the videos were amazing and really added to the song, but most of the time they were either "meh" or just awkward. Don't try to interpret the videos too hard because sometimes it's just visual fluff for the sake of it. If it work, it works. If it doesn't, just ignore it. That's what we did.

80s music videos could be extremely trippy.
The backup vocals were singing French "Les yeux sans visage"
The song Rebel Yell is probably more what you were expecting. But Billy Idol has such a great singing voice that a lot of his music isn't what a lot of people expect.
You're thinking of The Sex Pistols.

Idle Idol. Who knows? Maybe he's dyslexic, and they weren't accommodating -- schools weren't back then. Or maybe he has ADHD, which I don't know if was even known of at the time. Not that schools do much about it now.
Lots of people do poorly in school, but are plenty smart.
Seems like when people aren't doing well in school, and are just being bashed for it, there's a reason for the bad grades/behaviour/attendance/etc that hasn't been figured out yet.
Einstein, for one: he didn't learn how to read until he was 9, and he dropped out of high school when he was 15.
I think he had dyslexia, and maybe ADHD.
Steve Jobs, one of the Apple founders, dropped out of college after one semester.
Robert Downey Jr was kicked out of school because he had bad grades.
Walt Disney had ADHD, left school at 16.
    Bill Gates: high school drop-out.
Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) college drop-out because of bad grades (granted, it was Harvard, but still...)
    The list goes on...
