Emily, many years ago when I was still young and a student, a friend let me borrow her silver flute for a while, she did not play. I currently have a band class and I play the euphonium. I tried blowing into the head joint of the flute once, but I don’t know why I didn’t make any sound. There are people in band that play the flute and I didn’t know how they got so good doing so until I saw now how people blow into the instrument. And, with that being said, I learned how to put the instrument together with its case. Neutral experience.
It’s been 3 years for me 😭it’s my old band teacher who made older kids in the grade teach us and that obviously made most things I did wrong. The teacher didn’t even try teaching us she just made sure we could make a sound with it then left 🥲

I bought an expensive (160€) bass tin whistle, which is an open holes and much simpler Celtic flute. While it is very different from transverse flute I guess it can give you a first impression about holding a flute and about the mechanics of the flute sound. You can buy classic (non-bass) tin whistles for about 15 or 20€. :)
What a great intro lesson. I used to be a Soprano and Alto sax and bassoon player in college many years ago. I decided to pick up a flute from a pawn shop for $25, took it apart and did a COA on it, and now I'm trying to learn how to play it properly. One thing these lessons never really cover for adults is "what to do with it?", I'm just not quite sure how to practice for a recital without a symphonic band or woodwind ensemble to meet with. I suppose it varies, but it sure it hard to find a way to, say, play campfire guitar songs on a flute :/
Thank you so much, when I first got my flute I was so excited until my brother told me I wouldn’t be able to play it for a while, so I looked up this video, and now I’m able to play well! I appreciate this tutorial.

My eight-year-old daughter does, however, and she's chosen to follow in his footsteps with the flute. You'll be teaching me so that I can guide and correct her practice at home. Her great-great-grandfather would be very proud.
i am teaching someone at my school that wants to switch from clarinet to flute so i am using these videos to make lesson plans for her!! thank you so much
That's great!
I’m a tuba player but I have two flutes at my house for no reason, so I’m trying to learn.
I've been playing flute for 4 years and still don't know what I'm doing 😭😭😭
dang i been playing it for 4 months and know it fine
I just started on the lessons. Tomorrow is when I get the flute.
It’s been 3 years for me 😭it’s my old band teacher who made older kids in the grade teach us and that obviously made most things I did wrong. The teacher didn’t even try teaching us she just made sure we could make a sound with it then left 🥲
@@marieIIyno joke, that’s kinda what happened to me when I was in elementary school. Dunno whether I was stupid or the music teacher couldn’t teach the flute, but I was playing the same darned sound the entire class. I gave up on the flute after that
Excellent instructions. Excellent instructor.
I have been playing violin and tomorrow I'll finally get my first flute and I'm so excited 🤩
I love flute
This is great! I'll definitely check these classes, super helpful.
Thats great! Yes do check it out, I've poured in almost 2 years making the course perfect for everyone to benefit. Hope you enjoy it!
we are not even at the beginner stage but hearing the flute play is just awesome
4 weeks into trying to play and I still cant make a sound. 😭 I'm going to keep trying though.
Same lmao
It took me 6 months to make a good constant sound when I was learning in year 6
Don't give up. It takes time ⌚. I'm learning and getting the right tone. Don't give up.
I don't play flute, I don't even own a flute how did I get here? What am I doing here?
I play for nearly 50yrs, just got my wife one. I don't have a book for her, so I'm sending her to your site. I hope she can learn from you. I told her the most important thing is a good clean sound, all the rest will fall into place.
Of course, and plenty of practice. All the best to her and have fun playing duets!
thank you for this. I particularly like how you teach us to make a noise before putting the flute together. I had heard that making a proper noise was the hardest part. I'll do that from now on before putting the instrument together. (turns out its not that difficult when you know how it works)
Fantastic James! Happy practicing!
I'm switching from saxophone to flute for marching next year, flute is so much fun
Can anyone recommend a decent beginners flute? I’ve seen anything from $100-$300. I haven’t played since the 6th grade and am interesting in picking it back up as a hobby. Thank you!!
I played the flute when I was younger and played all the way up to Conservatory Grade 8, then life interfered. I just ordered a flute from ebay and we'll see how rusty I am. I'm excited to get back into it, and hopefully the flute is a decent one.
2:01 how do I make different notes?? Every time I try I only get that same deep sound
By putting more or less pressure with the air you're blowing.
Same
Me too
Me too
@@mrjilian07 I do believe it's because she's tightening her lips. I've been playing flute for 3 years, and I'm still learning about that so I'm not entirely sure
Thanks I'm a year 5 student learning the flute and it helps me alot!
Thanks I learnt how to play B and B-flat with ease thanks alot!!
My teacher told me all the flute players to play f, but as soon it was my turn I failed but next time I will make a huge comeback
Thank you for the lesson! I used to play when I was younger and wanted to give it a try again.
Emily, Just purchased my 1st flute. I have had 3 years of Piano 🎹 lessons back in the 1960’s. This should be fun and interesting…
amazing! happy practicing luke!
I dont even have a flute, but i’ll start watching your lessons
Hi I have a question .. What flute I should buy and try practicing on as a beginner ?
I bought an expensive (160€) bass tin whistle, which is an open holes and much simpler Celtic flute. While it is very different from transverse flute I guess it can give you a first impression about holding a flute and about the mechanics of the flute sound.
You can buy classic (non-bass) tin whistles for about 15 or 20€. :)
An open hole flute works best for me😊
I got a closed hole white
This instrument completely fascinates me. I dont own one, and I dont know if i ever will get around to try learning it. But it is beautiful to me nonetheless
yo thanks for feedback am now loving to play the flute !!!!!!!!! THX SO MUCH
I play Indian Bamboo flute. Now I want to buy a metal flute. Which one is good for me. Is open hole or closed hole is prefferable

Thanks for my first flute lesson! Just bought a flute today 🙏🏼🙏🏼
That's awesome! I hope you love it! 💖
THANK YOU SO MUCH, I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO MAKE A SOUND FROM THIS OLD FLUTE!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 I'M ON MY WAY TO CARNEGIE HALL!!!!! 🧡❤💜🤗
Glad I could help!
@@flutechannel You have helped so much! I'm even more motivated to stop smoking now. I've had it all summer, but never really learned to blow it.... Do you have any tips on how to clean flutes? 🙃
@@flutechannel ruclips.net/video/8XzPxQxxbSI/видео.html I found it. 🤗 thanks!.... but my flute was given to me and didn't come with a rag. I'll have to get one, but thank you. I will get back to practicing now. 👌
I was accidentally was sent a flute instead of a clarinet so now since I still have the flute I’m going to try and learn how to play it!!
I don't even own a flute. I literally play clarinet, but did I watch this entire video? Absolutely.
aww thanks! love clarinet btw. Any clarinet RUclipsrs I should follow?
I watched Lizzo on Johnathon Ross. That's what got me to take up the flute. So, I decided to take it out of my wardrobe and practice it.
But if u block the end piece no air comes out so uh my checks fill with air help
Got a flute for Christmas cause I wanted to learn and I just spent the past 20 minutes trying to figure out how to open the case lmao so definitely need this
Hi Emily, I really like your videos , lots of info and points on playing the flute. But I wonder, have you ever tried the bamboo flute?(Malaysian Seruling, Indonesian Seruling, or Chinese Dizi Flute)I play the bamboo flute and I wonder how a Professional like you think about the bamboo flutes.
Hi Amelie
Thank you so much for these beginners’ tips and technique.
I have a Mendini brand Flute. I am not expert but for some reason I don’t feel it’s making the right sound.
I am looking at the Pearl Student Model 200. Do you think that’s a good choice?
Or any suggestion for a good beginner’s or intermediate quality Flute.
Thank You
I have this flute and when i removed the top im trying to put it back but it wont work-
I'm here as a person who just passed Grade 2! I'm a member of the school band and in going too tutor some new kids in my school!! Just looking at how I should teach them! 🎶💕
That is awesome!
im considering buying a flute, and i saw one online where it has the option “16 holes closed” and “17 holes open”, can I ask what’s the difference? And what is better for beginners? My only instrument is bass😅
same I play doublebass and guitar bass as well, I'm trying to pick up the flute now!
I play clarinet and I’d like to learn flute. This tutorial was really interesting. All I need now is a flute. What is a good and inexpensive beginner flute?
Amelie thank you so much! I'm a beginner and these flute lessons really teach me. Now that i'm getting better today, I took 1 straight hour of practice watching your videos over and over. I love your channel! btw im new here!
Welcome to the community!
@@flutechannel thank you!
I'm 58 and just about to buy a flute to learn on. Do I buy a beginners flute or is it best to buy a professional one and learn properly? I can play by ear so I just want to learn the basics. I will follow your very good tuition, thank you.
