Truly in debt to you for putting these foundations in place for those of us who have to start out without a teacher to observe. The good news is this does make me really listen look and observe myself in minute detail and raise awareness and take responsibility for posture and breathing using your two videos on these subjects. Thank you.x
I had lessons from a flautist called Gavin Ashenden. In 1975 . He taught me diaphragmatic breathing & how to hold the flute in a lightly balanced way. Then when I was getting a grip on this I was taught a relaxed embouchre. This has stayed with me to this day. Thanks Gavin.
I’m a middle school flutist, and watching this because I seriously need help before an ensemble in Feb. 2020. I tried to do what you did, but literally gasped and choked. xd
Thanks for this breathing video. I bought my flute primarily to strengthen my lungs because I have asthma and COPD. My flute comes to me in the mail on October 24th
This is much like learning to swim, breathing management and regulation to increase capacity while monitoring expenditures. Got it. Going to have to practice. Thank you.
French horn player here 📯 Thank you for you tips , really helps. I can feel that I'm full with air :) Also you have nice English with gorgeous French .
I am so so grateful to this video, I learned more about breathing and how to do proper breathing exercises in this 10 minute video than I have in the 2 years I've been playing flute, no one has ever taken the time to teach me how to do this in school, so thank you so so much :D
As a French Horn player who also plays flute I can attest that it s quite true that the flute takes more air than a brass instrument. It takes a lot more.
I play trumpet and I’m picking up flute. I agree that the flute takes a lot more air. Usually I never think about having to take in air when I play trumpet but when I play flute it’s very pronounced
@@speedpaintprince418 I think you may discover that you will be able to play flute all day long and your chops will never get tired. I found that playing a brass instrument developed the muscles used to play flute far beyond what just playing flute can do. Now that I only play flute and not horn I find I do get tired.
i love your videos. i found you a bit late i suppose, but i am glad i did. full of life tutorials and happy vibes. i like the way you keep things informal and wityful. you accent is so clear we understand every single word of it. and the small video touches are like a lemon slice in a mojito ;)

You may be breathing too much, it sounds like hyper ventilation. For beginners its completely normal, try sitting in a chair while practicing so you'll have less chances of falling down.
tulumika I was feeling light headed too after a little practice and I discovered that I was puckering while blowing, as @Eriktheflutemaker advices not to pucker but grin when you're blowing.
Hi Thanks for this. I have been playing flute music on wooden flute for a long time, and am only now learning how to breathe properly ( self-taught ) . The Hawaii trick is great. Thanks . Pat
Hello! I love you and your channel too. I am currently following music as a flutist in an appropriate school ... I am 16 years old and I have a lot of problems when I play that I really want to solve, otherwise I feel that my life no longer makes sense. My biggest problem is precisely the breath! I feel that I breathe less than a normal person and when I have to play for a while (it doesn't have to be much) I even try to breathe more, to the point that I feel a lot of pain all over my chest area. I can handle less than children two or even three years younger than me who also play the flute. As I breathe: I breathe for just one or two times in slower exercises. I think of stuffing the abdominal area and the ribs as it is supposed to. I don't make much noise when I breathe and try to breathe in "ou" although I often breathe in "Ah". After two seconds of breathing, my body does not seem to support more air. If I insist more on this then I start to feel pain. But if it doesn't fill me with air then I can't stand it too long. When I think about keeping the diaphragm hard, after, for example, 7 times at 60 in the metronome, my belly starts to shake and I literally "die." My maximum right now is to hold 9,5 times at about 60 in the metronome (with a reasonable sound quality). Do you think you can help me please? Kiss from Portugal 🇵🇹
Wow! This is great! Breathing “normally” is the first thing to go when I get nervous playing either practice or performance. Definitely need to continue working on controlling/paying closer attention to my breathing.
Hi Amélie. Wondering, when we play flute, do we breath with the mouth, the nose, or a bit of both? For instance when you catch your breath in between two notes, is it with the mouth or the nose? Thank you!
I love your videos on the flute channel! I have just started playing again and it is taking me a while to get back into shape! But watching your videos and others here on RUclips is helping me with inspiration!
This was a very informative video. Thank you for the tips in this tutorial!!!! I just find your channel, and I think it's awesome, it has so much information, I am studying flute and my teacher never taught me this way, you are so at explaining everything. Just so exited about you content. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Greetings from Ecuador!
Hi Emily. Question? I have a decent sounding Student Model Yahmaha 225 S. I have an idea to upgrade to the next level Headjoint and a B - (b?) foot. What do you say? Kindly advise and Thank You! Uriah.
Hi Uriah! It depends if you happy with what you have, stay with it and perhaps take it to a technician/repair shop and have it overhauled ( which means replacing the pads with new ones and regulating the instrument ) It might even making sound better. This should be done every 2-3 years if your only playing as a hobby. But if your planning on wanting to be a bit more serious getting a new flute could be something you should consider. Check your budget, see what you can afford and try many instruments in your budget. A B foot is good to have make sure to get that. The rest is up to your own preference after you try some flutes. Please check out our flute reviews and if you have more questions just let me know!
yes! try to think the more closed your lips are the colder your air = the faster the air. the more open you lips the warmer the air = the slow the air goes! Start with that. :) what else have you been working on?
I am working on my low notes (G - C) and 3rd octave (C - G). My teacher commented my air speed not fast enough so my low notes sound weak and high notes not stable or not reach...
When I´m trying to breathe in for a longer period of time I always get stuck too soon (like only after fourth period) and I feel like I can´t make myself breathe in anymore, even after practising for a while. Is there a way of making it better?

And when i take a breath without lifting my chest and shoulders the air is going just to my abdominal and i feel very uncomfortable and i feel that i have no enough air
@@Klarisszaivncsk They may lack in knowledge of how the body actually works. The chest and shoulders only expand slightly outwards, its just how our lungs are built. Restricting this natural movement will only make your breathing difficult.

Well I know this is an old video but I am going to start playing Piccolo for marching season next year! I was wondering if these breathing exercises will help the piccolo sound clearer and more pretty? I have major trouble getting my sound to match when I played flute, I’m also having trouble keeping the air flowing when I hold long notes. And when I play for a long time (usually about a 50-70 second song) my jawline and cheeks will get tired! I was just wondering if that is normal or not.
