    I had lessons from a flautist called Gavin Ashenden. In 1975 .
    He taught me diaphragmatic breathing & how to hold the flute in a lightly balanced way.
    Then when I was getting a grip on this I was taught a relaxed embouchre.
    This has stayed with me to this day.
    Thanks Gavin.

    As a French Horn player who also plays flute I can attest that it s quite true that the flute takes more air than a brass instrument. It takes a lot more.

      I play trumpet and I’m picking up flute. I agree that the flute takes a lot more air. Usually I never think about having to take in air when I play trumpet but when I play flute it’s very pronounced

      @@speedpaintprince418 I think you may discover that you will be able to play flute all day long and your chops will never get tired. I found that playing a brass instrument developed the muscles used to play flute far beyond what just playing flute can do. Now that I only play flute and not horn I find I do get tired.

    Hello! I love you and your channel too. I am currently following music as a flutist in an appropriate school ... I am 16 years old and I have a lot of problems when I play that I really want to solve, otherwise I feel that my life no longer makes sense. My biggest problem is precisely the breath! I feel that I breathe less than a normal person and when I have to play for a while (it doesn't have to be much) I even try to breathe more, to the point that I feel a lot of pain all over my chest area. I can handle less than children two or even three years younger than me who also play the flute.
    As I breathe:
    I breathe for just one or two times in slower exercises. I think of stuffing the abdominal area and the ribs as it is supposed to.
    I don't make much noise when I breathe and try to breathe in "ou" although I often breathe in "Ah". After two seconds of breathing, my body does not seem to support more air. If I insist more on this then I start to feel pain. But if it doesn't fill me with air then I can't stand it too long. When I think about keeping the diaphragm hard, after, for example, 7 times at 60 in the metronome, my belly starts to shake and I literally "die." My maximum right now is to hold 9,5 times at about 60 in the metronome (with a reasonable sound quality).
    Do you think you can help me please?
    Kiss from Portugal 🇵🇹

    • @flutechannel
      @flutechannel  6 лет назад

      Hi Uriah! It depends if you happy with what you have, stay with it and perhaps take it to a technician/repair shop and have it overhauled ( which means replacing the pads with new ones and regulating the instrument ) It might even making sound better. This should be done every 2-3 years if your only playing as a hobby. But if your planning on wanting to be a bit more serious getting a new flute could be something you should consider. Check your budget, see what you can afford and try many instruments in your budget. A B foot is good to have make sure to get that. The rest is up to your own preference after you try some flutes. Please check out our flute reviews and if you have more questions just let me know!

    When I play, Eb and D never work, then I look, check, still doesn't work, I get frustrated, try more, then sometimes I get so frustrated and try so hard I blow super hard trying to get sound, Is there a way to fix that? It doesn't work well for those two, it gets frustrating. Also, I've played for 2 weeks but sometimes I get D correct, so I can play Mary Had A Little Lamb. Feel like I'll lightheaded sometimes and it's so WIERD. I feel like I'm gonna fall down. Usually I just sit down so I don't. This will help me a lot.

    Well I know this is an old video but I am going to start playing Piccolo for marching season next year! I was wondering if these breathing exercises will help the piccolo sound clearer and more pretty? I have major trouble getting my sound to match when I played flute, I’m also having trouble keeping the air flowing when I hold long notes. And when I play for a long time (usually about a 50-70 second song) my jawline and cheeks will get tired! I was just wondering if that is normal or not. And thanks for the helpful tips, I’m definitely going to use them more often! ☺️

      Thats sad to hear that your getting nauseated. Try not to breath in to extreme, always make sure you feel comfortable. Try not to force to much right away. Please keep us up to date on your progress.
