Khiara's smile and laughter brings such a smile to me. I can't help giggling along with her. Adam, you better marry that girl. The laughter alone will extend your lifespan. :-)
Hi Khiara and Adam. It's Carolyn and Rick here, from Snow Gum - a Garcia Exploration 45. The boat has 4.5 tonne of internal ballast, in the stub keel and the bottom of the hull. Putting the anchor locker at the base of the mast stops the bow from pitching with a pendulum motion. And the long centreboard fights leeway while close hauling and close reaching. It works! :-)
Instead of delaying your videos use this format to fill in. You do one of the best Q&A of the sailing groups. Very strong in your response and don't profess to be an expert on all things. Very refreshing. Please continue this discussion format.
I really like the fact that your channel is so current. It makes me feel like I’m adventuring with you. I’ve gotten bored, and unsubscribed from others that post such old content. Don’t want you guys to be stressed but please don’t stop being one of the good ones.. ✌🏼☺️
Hello, I am a retired grandfather that just found your video. I live in the mid west area in the United States of America. I am alone now and get a lot of enjoyment watching videos like yours. I have been around boats most all my adult life. But they have been power not sail. I envy you both for enjoying your young life. I will 75years old this year. If I were younger I might try what you are doing. I wish you the best of luck. And please be safe.

Please don’t get too behind the current date. Watching other channels who post content that you realise is many months behind, sometime much more, is frustrating. Love the Q&As for times like now. Agree with posting date for any content that’s more than a month old. Some content will be ageless like provisioning and using the pressure cooker. Maybe create and save some of those for when you’re wanting/needing time out. Love that you shared your long term plans, thank you. Fair winds, Elaine.
Nice video, thanks. As for the Garcia Exploration, I'm currently looking at them for myself and can let you know, it's actually a dagger board so the weight/ballest is in the hull, not the keel. This is not only safer, especially downwind with following waves, but let's you anchor in more shallow spots without affecting your ballets and center of gravity. The idea behind the centralised anchor chain locker is to keep as many larger weights towards the center of the boat instead of the bow which provides a more comfortable passage. All the lines are brought back to the cockpit so the 52 version can easily be handled by just the two of you. All we need now is those 10 million ;-)
I see the benefit of a backlog, but I do like how your channel feels more like a vlog than a tv show. I think it's great that you decided to use Q&A videos to fill in a stretch of crappy weather. Waiting out the weather is part of your sailing experience, a part that might be tempting to edit out because it's not glamorous. In other words, stay spontaneous! I'd totally watch an episode about what boat you'd buy with 10 million bucks! Actually what would be even better, if you had 10 million to have a custom expedition boat designed and built to your specs, what criteria would you prioritize? Take care!

If you guys do move to a 2-3 month content backlog, can I humbly suggest putting the dates or month or whatnot when the video was shot in the video description somewhere? The fine people over at Sailing Soulianis started doing this a few months back and it really helped with getting a sense of when things had actually occurred.

REAL-TIME VS. CONTENT BUFFER (months in the bank) 1. Love watching your adventures and especially following along as you tackle projects and solve unforeseen challenges. 2. I enjoy your style and part of the journey is the thread of emotion and moods that swing through any person's life. It is so very generous of you to share your adventures with strangers (let's be honest). 3. Suggestion: creating a buffer. Maybe think of a series of topics you can thread between journal episodes, and bank them? I looked through the comments and didn't see anyone mention this, but other channels do this sort of "aside business." Examples: collections of great dives grouped by topic (country, reefs, beaches, tropical, cold water, mammals, sea life categories, etc.); cooking at sea; provisioning in the tropics vs. Scandinavia vs. Mediterranean vs. Australia vs. S. Sorry, all this just jumped out at me while you were speaking about your hiatus, which is easily excused. Don't beat yourselves up over it.
While you are sort of trapped it would be good to have some content about what there is to do apart from the obvious one. What things help you pass the time? Do you have wireless internet from the shore? Is it reading books, playing games, planning, building, socialising with other boats. How much of an average day is maintenance of the boat? How about supplies, food, water, snacks? If you don't have the internet what methods do you use to keep up to date with events? What things are available to boats on anchor? Are there any enterprising locals coming around each day selling supplies. Is there more or less organised activities amongst the boating community now that covid is here? What I am trying to say is that every video doesn't have to documenting a major project, disaster or achievement. It would be good to see how the quiet times are spent. Everyone is dealing with restrictions on their normal activities, it would be interesting to learn how this is done on a boat. Thanks.

Whenever you release a video, unless it's just general Q&A or a repair, say where you are (and not just "We're anchored off Black Rock, near the reef." My fellow sea kayakers are notorious for doing this - half the time you never figure out if their just down the block or in the high arctic.) And give a, date or at least the month. "Wow the Exumas in that video are beautiful, It says September on the RUclips tag, so let's go next year in September!" (and maybe also experience a hurricane up close.) Of course you don't want to say "We're recording this in Berth 42 Quai C at Ft Lauderdale on Feb 28" ...stalkers and weirdos come on down! (It's better to meet your fans by chance, "Oh, oh! You're the RUclips sailors! I love your channel, You're my favorites! I'm one of your Patreons! It's so great to finally meet you Riley and Kika! And look it's your catamaran Delos! I guess you're just over here visiting this old boat...." When you're canning I'm assuming you'll be using Ball Jars or some other glass jars. Get a cheap 1/4" yoga mat on Amazon and make sleeves for the jars so each jar is padded to keep from crashing together. You might be able to just cut the right diameter and then butt glue them. And with Ball Jars, the rubber seals get stiff over time so canning round three with the same jars, get new rubber gaskets. The cheap 1/4" yoga mats are very handy, they make great padding, a little cushioning, a lot of insulation. The 1/2" is super cushy, great for seat pads and standing long periods on. I buy them and cut them up.
More than a video on "what specific super expensive boat?" I'd like a video about what aspects you would value in a boat, what tradeoffs you would make. Rigs, hull shape, keel shape, hull material, layout etc. I think that would be useful for anyone looking for a boat.
When I ran tv stations, the news and current affairs shows always had to balance content and airtimes. The solution was and is to have a collection of standby stories for slow news days (see “Drop the Dead Donkey” tv show, google the title). You could do the same. Make a list of topics which could be slotted into an episode and produced easily. Or create an ongoing series which can be part of the larger episode: for instance there’s a wealth of material on food, food storage (containers for cereal?), breakfasts on a passage, etc. on racing boats we always have all meals cooked and prepared before starting, nobody peels carrots on a racing yacht. Do you prep meals before an ocean crossing? What do you avoid eating in rough seas? Still more material on toilets, anchoring, good and bad charts, yukky jobs, safety at sea and on anchor, how to plan an arrival (quarantine, customs, anchor or mooring or marina). I think you need to be no more than a week or two off real-time. If something happens on a Sunday, don’t bust a boiler to edit it for Monday, either leave it out or shoot a quick piece saying ‘next time...’ and promo at the end. KUTGW (keep up...)
Hello, just want to throw out that you two are doing a wonderful channel. A bit of fixing, a bit of travel, bit of misc. Keep it up and thank you for the super good vibes. Hopefully I will see you out one day, I still want to lazy race you from island to island. Cheers.
Love your videos guys, still my favourite, even when there's no sailing...just alternate sailing with boat chat vids and you'll buy yourselves some time for stress free editing :)
The Garcia Explorations are a 45 and a 52.Also believe they are building a 63 as well.As far as I know, the chain weight is not in the ballast equation,it is just moved to the centre of the boat to minimize weight forward, for less digging into waves.
I dearly love listening to your very real description of you experiences. Thank you for making my morning brighter. I think I am with you on the hydrovane. With the plan you described for your travels my, not vary valuable, opinion is that a no power, course holding device that can operate as an back up rudder is, if nothing else, a good insurance policy. Fair winds and thank you again.
10:00 that is our goal too! We just went under contract last week on a 43 foot ketch. We will have a video of it up soon. Our plan is to hear north to escape hurricane season, then come back down south for a season, then head to Greenland, Iceland, then over to Europe.
As a music teacher...Khiara has a LOVELY voice!!! As an old fart UK coastal sailor...my next boat would be a Westerly Oceanquest 35. However, I would keep my Macgregor 26 (yup, I'm one of those...) for creek crawling because it floats in 18" of water...GREAT video!!!!
One of my favorite things about you guys is that you are “real time” and don’t have to “tell a story”. You’re just genuinely sharing your experiences and telling YOUR story. I’m looking forward to my own adventures in its own time.
Garcia Exploration 45 and 52. Yes, 2 of my dream boats as well. Even if you can find a used one for sale, it will be very expensive. The dream lives on (for me at least). Good, less expensive, alternatives are: ALUBAT OVNI and ALLURES.
There were some really awesome questions this video! I would love to see a video digging deeper into sailboats and different designs and one on provisioning and canning as well. Your future plans sound absolutely amazing and I can't wait to watch you make it happen!
The Garcias (whatever size) are quite certainly a very good choice, well thought out and built of aluminium being IMHO the best boat building material. You may have a look at Pete Goss' video on his Garcia 45. As for your planning you mustn't leave out the Baltic Sea. Good sailing conditions and weather (well, Northern Europe but mostly fine) between May and October and a thousand years of history. Cities like Copenhagen, Stockholm and St.Petersburg are no doubt among the most beautiful cities in the world - a must!
Also, a bit for canning with Khiara! I make freezer jam and love it. That said the expanded horizons of pressure cooker canning is something I have always considered. I'd watch for sure.
I love seeing you and hearing your thoughts about where you've been and what you've liked so far. I'm so happy to have met you both and can continue to follow you on your adventures. God bless you both. Enjoy every minute. ❤️❤️
Yes to the video to expand on the "design of boats" following the money, very interesting topic, would appreciate your insight. Thanks, enjoy your channel! Happy sailing :)
Garcia great choice. Boreal Yachts down the same alley. The new Viator 42 DS takes out a bit of the expedition extremes, a bit smaller and radically "simple, sustainable, hybrid" optimized. Now if you wanna up it a bit: KM Yachtbuilder's Bestevaer. Usually full custom. And some extraordinary boat's: Tranquilo (NW-Passage, Antartica, South Georgia, Patagonia, Wintering on the NW-Passage), Morning Haze (NW-Passage), Bestevaer II (Loads of high-latitude and Ice-Sailing), Novara (Circumnavigated the Americas), Bestevaer sailor's all go nuts .... even owner's of the series version Bestervaer Pure 45ST seem to aim for ice. KM although builds Skip Novak's new Pelagic. And on paper, there is a 53 foot "family cruiser" version of the Pelagic. Yeah, an episode on extreme-cruiser-yachts would be fun. On the other hand: Matt Rutherford did the circumnavigation of the America's in dang 15K Albin Vega, and the exploits done with Contessa 32s are legend.
For the sake of your privacy and safety I could see y'all being a month or two behind that way someone wants to come looking for you if they won't know where you're at for sure. I know there's a few people out there that think they're your number one fan and they just want to see you desperately but they don't think about asking first... I know that's why some channels put their videos 3 to 6 months behind which I think is a little bit too much but it's their channel they can do what they want... There's one thing I do not like about those channels and that's when they ask people for suggestions and the videos are 3 to 6 months behind why would we make suggestions because whatever they did is already done.... Your videos are very enjoyable but you shouldn't be stressing over them make them as you want to it's your channel and may you kids be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗
Thanks for the heads up on the Garcia Exploration 45. What a magnificent boat. One for under $900K NZ. Definitely on the "What to buy with my lotto winnings" list
Garcia are great. I have an older one and have no other experience. I think you are misunderstanding the ballast /chain locker situation. The chain locker midships is to remove a bit of weight from the bow. My boat for example has six and a half tons of ballast in the bilges. Bricks of iron, encased in resin and packed in tar. Then sealed in behind a welded ‘floor’. The center board is a hydro dynamic device only. By the way I really enjoy your videos.
After reading all of the comments by I concur, that is make the video’s but please do not go more than two months late. I am old and get confused but I love your channel
I believe what ever backlog you guy's are comfortable with, is obviously the way to go! However, Q & A sessions like this one, or an occasionally live video sprinkled in here & there. Really make me feel like i'm right in the thick of it with ya!! Most importantly, thank you for sharing the adventures with us!!!
Adam's personality reminds me of Larry Emdur. Luv these Q&A's, appears u haven't done one for awhile? My Q would be, what would u sail, & how would u equip, if single/solo?
Following up on the “if you could chose any boat, what would you chose?” question, I’d love to see a video of your top choices (used or new) per price bracket - say 0-100K, 100-250K, 250-500K, etc and why you’d choose that one (features, upgrades, whatever!).
"Don't pay the ransom , They've escaped." Welcome back Khiara and Adam. Your Nana and I enjoyed you 2 latest episodes and pleased that you are both happy and well. There were rumours that you had been incarcerated for nefarious activities, but we didn't believe them. Just joking, you should be aware of my drool sense of humour by now. We both wish you well and keep sailing, be happy and enjoy. Love Nana and Granddad
Hey guys loved your video as usual. Yes I would love to watch a video of a wish list of boats. I would like to offer a few suggestions to kick it off, Nautor Swan, Oyster, Najad 44 (Ran Saling) and Hylas. All great blue water brands. Something to remember, as I'm sure you know, the bigger the boat the bigger the upkeep, imagine the cost of a new main for a fifty footer!
One question would be: Which places would you avoid? I think most people avoid Africa? Do you guys have a complete map of your journey? I know you mentioned a few boats, but what about a Catamaran? They seem easier to sail and faster when needed. Have you linked up with anyone in order to get across a dangerous area or ocean that you weren't so keen on? You guys are freaking amazing, no massive income, on a budget. Many Sailing X and Y have floating houses with all amenities and luxuries.
Really enjoying your Q & A sessions. They are most informative and entertaining. Enjoy your interactions and willingness to support each other's differing opinions.
Amazing Tips..on ⛵, favorite 🚢🛥&Accessories..Shad in Phoenix,Az 🏜..We have done a lot of sailing growing up...looking forward to west coast 35' range ⛵boat soon....love you guys!
Good morning 🤗 yes please more on the boat you want ... I assure you I have not interest in, I’m only dreaming about the ovni 400 😉 Thanks again for your videos 😁 have a nice day Michaël
So much great stuff in this one! Selfishly, I’d love more videos on boats you like because I’m in the market for a blue water boat to solo sail. And I would love to see more about the pressure cooker and cooking onboard. I didn’t have one when I lived in my boat but heard others talking about it. Thanks!
The look of relief on Adam’s face when he’s describing the folding prop! I reckon you were only a couple of passages with the old vibrating prop away from the full ‘axe through a door’ “here’s Adam!” routine. Close call! 😂
We almost bought a Taswell 49. Gorgeous. However the Tv screen was melted. So we realized the batteries leaked and the most ate the tv. Plus probably all the electrical wires. Engine mounts etc. u can tell they threw water on nav station at one point. The dishonesty. I tell ya. Gorgeous boat. Now we have a Nantucket Island 38 on contract.
Good on ya for owning up. Education is expensive but now you know. Before you take the Northern west to East Atlantic crossing try sailing around Frying Pan Shoals, Cape Fear and Cape Hatteras. You might enjoy stopping New England. Nova Scotia and St. Pierre and Miquelon if doing North. You will need a reliable heat source for Iceland, Greenland etc...Need crew? Did you get new sails yet? And what of the standing rigging has not been replaced yet? I have a V42CC that's an 1985 and it needed everything in the standing rigging but the breast plate and the back stay chain plate.
Yes make the video. If you guys need more buffer/ bridge content videos like ideal boat or boat upgrades take a lot less footage to produce and are super fun to indulge in.
I don't care when you put your videos out ! Ill watch them even if they're 5 years old ! If there was no dates on them it wouldn't make any difference at all ! Just number them starting at #1 ! Cheers
For the dream boat review episode you should look at the Neel 51 trimaran. From everything I have read and seen on RUclips they have the best of both worlds. The have some of the comforts of a cat and the sailing performance of a monohull but can be faster than either too. I also asked John Kretschmer about them, but he had only seen them and not sailed one.
I do miss you when you aren’t publishing, however, I kind of like the reality of real time honestly. This is not network TV, for me. I don’t do TV at all. I enjoy real. All things real. I respect that the world might not be that way, but I would argue that it should get real. Now that I have said that, I do realize there is a business decision involved, so full speed ahead, however that works best for you? But as a sailor, patience is part of it. Keep it coming in the best way for you!
Keep an eye out if you do go south to Gibraltar in your route. Been seeing many videos of a Pod of 3 Orca's attacking smaller boats off Portugal. Hopefully they haven't been teaching new ones. in "attacking", they RAM the hulls and try to use the behavior they use when forcing seals off ice floats .... Great Vid.
There is a reason I don't watch most of the delayed shows. They seem much more detached from their viewers. I prefer the shows that are more recent as it gives chance to provide feedback. I think SailLife really benifits from the relationship he has with his viewers by going from week to week.
The editing process is a monumental task for most RUclipsrs and I've heard that some 'job that out' through online services like that of Fiverr. I hear that there is a learning curve as you and your editor(s) feel each other out and they become more and more able to help you produce videos that have the feel you're aiming for. And, you're always free to alter, add, subtract or modify as needed. How nice it could be…
Just a reminder to the folks out there, a cast metal part is generally going to be more brittle than a forged, or machined part, and quite often it will be much more brittle. For the rest of the world, 1/8 of an inch is is slightly more then 3mm.

You're the RUclips sailors! I love your channel, You're my favorites! I'm one of your Patreons! It's so great to finally meet you Riley and Kika! And look it's your catamaran Delos! I guess you're just over here visiting this old boat...."
When you're canning I'm assuming you'll be using Ball Jars or some other glass jars.
To my mind, my ATF blue water cruising boat that emphasizes SOLAS and easy shorthand sailing for a couple would be the Amel 54. Hard to beat it.
Sailing Uma Vs Sailing Millennial Falcon: The battle of the couch! lol 😂🤣😂🤣
Falcon.."Buy the couch"..Uma..."Dont buy a couch" I'm so torn....lol
Buy the couch.....For the Boat. :D
Ha! I'm afraid I love my couch, but Sailing UMA is also a favourite channel
@@fruitgums Mine too. :)
that's what i thought!
UMA is on my watch list but my top two are millennial falcon and good bad and ugly.
Yay, a Millennal Falcon new video notification makes my day!! 🎉
I just love you guys, and I'll watch whatever you produce with wanton glee!
I called the Garcia the second the question came up! You know it makes sense! :D
Always a pleasure to watch you two RUclips.
Do a couple/few more weeks of Q & A vlogs. I have been really enjoying them!
As ever, great to see and hear you guys chatting and being open. Never ceases to make us all smile. Family viewing, thank you.
Yayy a video
That's the same route I've been planning for the last 4 years !
Adam's personality reminds me of Larry Emdur. Luv these Q&A's, appears u haven't done one for awhile? My Q would be, what would u sail, & how would u equip, if single/solo?
Yes please to the ‘what boat would I buy’ video - good future idea. Always interesting to hear people talk through their priorities etc...
I wish I could like this multiple times... this was a great video!
Thank you Minnie Riperton! ALSO... you forgot to mention those BEAUTIFUL, GOOD LOOKING people of Bermuda! LoL
Great Episode. I Love the realtime feel.
I really like that you take responsibility for your actions. Something that is sourly lacking in my world.
A friend had jars of salmon he caught in Alaska. Year or two later we all ate it and it was great...so great idea canning protein...
Love your q&a vids. Are these easier to edit. Maybe do one a month. 🇨🇦⚓️❤️
Spectacular video. Thank you for sharing❤️
I assure you I have not interest in,
I’m only dreaming about the ovni 400 😉
Thanks again for your videos 😁 have a nice day
Michaël
BTW - the two of you are just great. Love the show.
I just love your Q&As. They are fun and honest. Yup, Adam you are just the luckiest guy.
Glad you didn't have to catch the camera this time! I'll add another vote for yes make that vlog, choice & reasons for said choice lol
Your videos are great, real time or otherwise! You guys have great energy together and I love watching you!
Cheers
Garcia disco 45. lovely boat.. Id have one of them. Built like a tank.
Been watching for awhile I think you are a lovely young couple keep doing what you’re doing good on you😊
Yes you should make that video. No I can’t afford any of them, but what’s the point in dreaming about something you can have.
Thank you for answering! :)
Fantastic Q and A episode ! Lovely to hear that Millie is almost ready for her next journey x
Great Vid.
The latest advice is heave to and stop the boat if they appear, and they leave you alone. They only seem to attack moving targets
Love the sound check. Not my favorite song but it suits the application perfectly.
Love your videos regardles of the timeframe. i would love to see a video on provisioning for the long haul.
