I'm in band, and I can confirm, you learn to grow a third lung when constantly doing something like playing an instrument. I assume it's the same with singing. Along with that, there's something we do in concert band that he does here, where he has someone else also start singing, so he can take a quick breath while they sing, it may be quick, but even an instant can get most of someone's breath back, if they're used to it.
