    I love hearing the stories of the OG road dogs. Must have been a great time to be s performing musician. Before '84, when they changed the drinking age back to 18, you could actually make a living playing in an unknown band. By the time my era rolled around people were playing gigs for free.

    • @TheDmonet
      @TheDmonet 2 года назад +3

      In New York they changed the drinking age from 18 to 21 and it killed the club scene 100%. there were a good number of bands making a living with no record deal back then because you could play a different club every night and get paid. Bands like Twister Sister and Zebra got major label deals out of this scene but many didn't.

      It lasted for a bit longer in the midwest... I was a gigging musician at the tail end of this era... The quality of the singers within this end era were stellar... They had to sing as good as Sebastian Bach on the records... but also do it for 4 hours 5 days a week... It was unreal looking back... Fun to think back on it...

    • @techmiter6299
      @techmiter6299 2 года назад +3

      @@TheDmonet I remember Zebra. Great band, great singer. My father-in-law played in Salty Dog in the late 70's/early 80's and made a living doing it. This was a Jersey Shore cover band mind you, yet the times were so good for bands that they actually had roadies, a sound guy, and a light guy. He said he would just show up to the show, sit at his kit & play. No load in, no load out. Just play, then party, and also get paid to do it. This was during a time that most places didn't have house PA's or lighting, so having a crew was a necessity. The really popular bands often got 100% of the door and therefore could afford to pay a crew. My day in the sun was quite a different experience, that's for sure.

    I saw Slaughter on tour with KISS and Winger in 1990. I was hanging back stage with Gene Simmons’ bass tech and wandered into Mark Slaughter’s dressing room having mistaken it for catering when I said food through a partially open door. Awkward reception, for sure. But as an avid KISS fan, I always knew that whatever Vinnie Vincent got his mitts in, the other party would be sorry. He was like turning Wayne & Garth loose on stage… Or Malmsteen’s mini-me with an axe to grind (yeah pun. I like ‘em. So?) almost like watching two bands at the same time. Vinnie was so into what he was doing that he didn’t bother to acknowledge there were other musicians on the stage.

    The 80’s glam metal era in retrospect had a lot of really talented guitarists & drummers, yet because of the “visual” aspect of those bands, the genre has become a running joke of style over substance, which is unfortunate, because EVERY band that seems to be the MOST DISRESPECTED (Winger for example) had top notch players. My niece and her friends went thru my cd collection and watching RUclips videos of bands & couldn’t stop laughing at the presentation. Dressing like drag queens really didn’t do any favors for Cinderella, Poison, Ratt, and the others.

    • @codacreator6162
      @codacreator6162 2 года назад +3

      Cinderella and RATT, both ridiculously talented bands, absolutely. Poison? Nah. They took Glam to a whole other level and appealed a lot to chicks (?) but musically? Not so much. There were two things that contributed to the downfall of 80s metal: record companies were shelling out more and more money to grab the Next Big Thing, and in the process a lot of bands got signed that probably shouldn’t have. And, the whole shtick was getting old. I was 18 in ‘83 and lived my young adulthood right through it. Grunge was not something I got into much. I find it ironic now that there are still some 80s bands still touring successfully while most of the grunge bands self-destructed. And I think it boils down to the music: nobody wants to go watch a funeral dirge in concert, but everybody likes a party.
