All the USA can hope for is to be a cultural influence into Mongolia. Meanwhile, for its part, Mongolia is going to be buffeted back and forth between Russia and China, but China will win it in the end. The USA can and likely will try to arbitrage that struggle, playing them off against each other, but there is simply no way we could set up Mongolia as an independant or alternative to Russia or China.

Я хоть родился в Союзе, но был пацаном когда все разбежались. Но вот меня таджика, слова того пожилого монгола очень сильно задели. Я его прекрасно понимаю, сам видел таких людей в Таджикистане. Во времена Союза они думали что будут кем то, мечтали, а тут судьба подбросила им ложечку дёгтя.
Когда учился в универе мне один профессор сказал нафига тебе эта Физика, сейчас наши знание никому не нужны. Я молодой парень удивлялся всему этому, но позже понял что к чему. Пришлось уехать сначала в Москву, а далее уже в Штаты. Я бы с удовольствием вернулся бы домой, но вот везде я уже чужой, а в Штатах тем более.

Во-первых - не "чужой", а скорее "не в теме" или "не местный" просто.
Во-вторых - на Родине и в РФ вы за год-два проживания освоитесь и станете "своим", а в США вы будете всегда Русским или "Китайцем". Образ мышления совершенно другой.
Сам живу в США с 2008, надеюсь скоро удастся свалить домой наконец.

We use to live in a democratic system already for over 30 years now. New generation of young mongols grew up under democracy. So, don't worry. Mongolian culture thrives under democracy and democracy promotes the culture and self expression.
Keep in mind, no one forced democracy on them, it was the public's choice.

I am a Russian engineer with Asian roots. I often travel to Central Asia for work, projects last for months or years. They always treat me with caution because I am a highly qualified personnel from the former metropolis with Moscow and European diplomas. Then, learning, getting to know me better, and that my ancestors, like most of them, go back to the Golden Horde, and I even understand their Turkic languages a little, they begin to open up to me somewhat.
I hear a lot of "awesome" stories. The meaning is always the same, that if it weren’t for the Russians, they would have colonized Mars long ago. And now you just have to put an end to the Soviet past and colonial thinking, they will immediately heal, and at the same time they will help us, the Turks of Russia, get rid of the Yoke). When asked why they haven’t healed in 30 years, they answer evasively, saying that the entire top group is old farts from the Union. fell under Putin, etc. Rivers are drying up, railways and heating mains are being destroyed, boilers at thermal power plants are exploding, the level of education is falling, the level of domestic violence and religious extremism is growing, the damned soviet is still to blame. IN THE EAST THERE ARE ALWAYS REASONS WHY ANYONE IS TO BLAME BUT US. Here it is simply an axiom. Moreover, the countries are de facto economic colonies, where Western companies invest minimally in development and safety, and do not care about the environment and social projects for workers. Extraction and squeezing, lucrative contracts, and the West supports any dictator.
If you remember the history of a hundred years ago, they will say that they were colonized by the Russians; if you say that the Russians built cities, factories, theaters, libraries, they will say that it was not the Russians who built, but the entire Union built. And he only exploited them. If you start to deny this, they will call you a Nazi. Moreover, they will boastfully discuss with gusto how the Russians paid us tribute for 300 years and how we had them. And they don’t see any Nazism in this.
At the same time, they of course understand that their education has simply degraded. The old guard is leaving or has dispersed, and educational institutions have degraded so much that they cannot graduate specialists even if they want to. That’s why, in fact, I am there, born and trained in the “filthy Russia”, where they slurp cabbage soup from bast shoes, but have their own atomic program, space program and processor. And I came to you, where there was no one to repair a 60-year-old oil-fired boiler.
And you even know what is grotesque about this situation. That behind all the show-off, theft, corruption, nepotism, humiliation of working people, they have screwed up the basic skills of maintaining the standard of living to which they are accustomed. That is, even if they pay money, they will not be able to build a railway road, or even a highway. I mean ourselves, without the help of foreign companies or specialists. No dam, no hydroelectric power station, no thermal power plant, no canal, no bridge.
I call this the "fall of civilization." It's like the dark ages after Antiquity and Rome. They cannot maintain their level of state and social institutions. They can simulate them, portray them, but inside they will continue to degrade.
Sometimes in conversations I talk about myself, about my nationality, I mean, of course, my interlocutors, and they feel it.
I say that I am happy to be born, study and live in Russia next to a wonderful people who treated everyone as equals and tried to build the most just state on earth. And we were lucky to live at this moment in the same state. They took us by the ears out of feudal fragmentation and placed us in socialism, bypassing the formation of national states, capitalism, industrialization, and a couple of wars. Well, that is, they gave us a free gift of progress, which nations go through in 300-400 years, and even then not all of them, but some who are lucky. We were lucky that there were Russians next to us, and not the Chinese, Arabs, or, God forbid, the East India Company or the British Crown. This is fortune, this is our lucky ticket, which will never appear again. But the guys comfortably retreated into the clan-community system to learn their lessons on their own, and they are comfortable in this swamp.
The whole 'Golden horde' narrative reminds me of 'We were kings' narrative of certain USA population) Which tells me that 'Mongols concurred the whole world' theory is bs from the start and probably written by some western historian back in 18 or 19th century)

Недавно ездил в Казахстан к родственникам, тоже самое слышал про голодомор, про то что русские все для себя, за счет других итд. Справедливости ради, я сам считал, что СССР затормозил развитие Российской империи и она могла быть сейчас на уровне европы итд, пока не стал углубляться в историю мира и советов в частности. В итоге я пришел к тому что СССР строили романтики с устремлениями в будущее всего человечества, и отказ от капитализма это обязательный аспект общества будущего. Анализируя проделанную работу в индустриальном и социальном плане, я поражаюсь насколько они тогда обогнали весь мир. Конечно очень хочется, чтобы все жили в этих красивых домах из американских фильмов, а не в убогих хрущевках, но потом понимаешь, что в этих красивых домах живет только малая часть людей. Советы же делали все и сразу для всех, поэтому вся "красивость" отодвигалась на 2 план.
по марксовой теории, как всякое изменение формации, коммунизм вызреет в недрах капитализма (когда мировой капитализм сольётся в планетарную монополию, что по теории монополизации неизбежно). Это просто естественный исторический процесс. Никто не строил феодализм, он сам сложился. Потому и "отказа" от капитализма быть не может - при мировой монополии он сам переродится. Потому троцкисты были ортодоксией учения, а наши строители социалистической конфедерации, борющейся с капиталистическим миром, - нашими русскими романтиками, нашим русским большевизмом. Но это если рассуждать в рамках марксизма, который я не поддерживаю ни философски, ни научно (не считаю это наукой в каком-либо виде).@@rbs1016
@@rbs1016 ссср так обогнал весь мир что платил капиталистам запада что бы провести индустриализацию, а потом либо покупал либо воровал идеи продуктов с того же загнивающего запада- мороженное, автомобили, техника, мебель, даже планировки домов- все тупо западное.
Все мы видим результат сейчас - как живет венгрия, польша, финляндия и т.д. и как живут РБ, Казахстан и РФ. Небо и земля.

@@BendtSten Yes, agree. Also there are soo many conditions and circumstances behind the words "if you really want to". I've seen the some documentaries on indian reservation communities in the US. There are many similarities to mongols who couldn't adapt to new realities. Sometimes the best efforts will fail. Alcoholism was a big problem in old times and still exist today in poor communities. But, the situation is gradually improving. Takes time.

The EU helps Mongolia with 32 million euros every year and the US with 11 million dollars.

These are excellent areas of activity, in which almost all the money remains in the donor countries, but Mongolia gets unnecessary consulting services and debts. The USA is the same.
As I remember, the United States spent $5 billion on democracy in Ukraine, the result is obvious.

As for the economic help it receives from USA and eu, you do realise that most of it gets stolen and the rest is being spent on building nato military bases?
Also a lot of the warm clothing, the mittens, felt boots and skis that Red Army used during the winters, were made by Mongolia.
Mongolia played a mostly unknown, but very important part in defeating Nazi Germany.
There's a good documentary on Russian MoD channel about what Mongolia actually meant for our cause, called 'Eternal Patriotic /15/ Great Asia against Aryans imposters'.
This country gave USSR more help during Second World War than wealthy, huge and very populated USA. (Mongolia is not objectively small, but comparing to USA, it is small. And Mongolia is not comparable in population and wealth with the United States.) And this help was not a lend lease, it was for free. One must remember that Mongolians were massacred by Japaneese, so this country really was at war and needed help from USSR. But stil people from USSR greatly appreciate the contribution of this country to our common victory in the Second World War.

Какой-то такой острой горечью накрыло, ощущением про*банного духовного и нравственного величия, про*банного светлого будущего и искренней дружбы народов, про*банного совместного освоения космоса и пути к прогрессу. Всё это заменила тяга к скучной комфортной жизни с большой чёрной машиной, коттеджем с высоким забором и роскошным шмоткам. Касается это, разумеется, не только монголов, но и нас, русских. Я родился уже после распада Союза и не являюсь левым/коммунистом, но испытываю глубочайшее сожаление к таким людям, которые строили новый мир, а потом оказались вышвырнуты на обочину истории и чувствуют себя забытыми и брошенными... СССР совершил неоценимый вклад в строительство, индустриализацию, развитие образования, культуры и науки в азиатских государствах и союзных республиках. Честное слово, если бы была возможность, я бы предложил этому человеку переехать в Россию и помог ему обустроиться здесь. Это не Советский Союз, разумеется, у нас так же, как и в Монголии, разгул дикого капитализма, но всё-таки он смог бы найти себе здесь единомышленников.
God. When the man showed the coat of arms of the MPR and said that he cries at night, I cried myself. Some kind of acute bitterness covered, a feeling of lost spiritual and moral greatness, about lost bright future and sincere friendship of peoples, about lost joint space exploration and the path to progress. All this was replaced by a craving for a boring comfortable life with a big black car, a cottage with a high fence and luxurious clothes. This concerns, of course, not only the Mongols, but also us, the Russians. I was born after the collapse of the Soviet Union and am not a leftist/communist, but I feel the deepest regret for such people who built a new world, and then were thrown to the sidelines of history and feel forgotten and abandoned. The USSR made an invaluable contribution to the construction, industrialization, development of education, culture and science in Asian states and Union republics. Honestly, if ther was an opportunity, I would offer this person to move to Russia and help him settle down here. This is not the Soviet Union, of course, we have a rampant wild capitalism, just like in Mongolia, but still he could find like-minded people here.

Искрения дружба народов? Нравственного величия? чувак, не смеши мои тапки)))) СССР как и сегодня РФ это империя, которая поглощала и поглощает территории и народы. Главная цель метрополии это уничтожить и ассимилировать народы. Целые народы потеряли себя за 50 лет СССР, забыли свои языки, культуру и имена. Бывшие советские республики только сейчас начинают восстанавливать свои языки и переводить деопроизводство и тд на свой родной язык. Их маргинализировали и ассимилировали. Если в СССР была дружба народов, то почему целые народы геноцидились? голодомор в КЗ и Украине? целые народы (корейцы, калмыки, нохчи, немцы, карачаевцы, финны, осетины, ингуши, балкарца, крымские татары и другие были насильно депортированы за тысячи км? почему тут и там несмотря на террор вспыхивали восстания и бунты?
Нравственное величие? Настолько люди были нравественны, что пришлось вводить сухой закон, который с треском провалился, потому что люди бухали как не в себе, именно в СССР культура АУЕ родилась и была на пике, в моем городе было куча банд, невозможно было спокойно погулять на соседнем районе, получишь по башке 100%.
Люди писали друг на друга доносы, мой дед был прокурором и построил во дворе своем мааааленький гараж для служебного уазика, так на него сразу написали донос. это я не говорю о раннем СССР.
все что ты пишешь это ванильные история для душных ватников. Для меня совершенно ясно одно и только один факт говорит, что СССР была плохой страной - из нее невозможно было свободно выехать. Правительство какой страны ограничивает выезд своим гражданам? почему государство решает где мне жить и что мне суждено увидеть в своей жизни? Что то мне это напоминает. Ммм СССР, Ммм Украина, Ммм Армения, Ммм Грузия, Ммм Казахстан. Первые две страны в этом списке были уничтожены. Армения и Грузия сейчас блеклая тень себя самой.
Только Казахстан ещё держится, если бы не Россия и спасение ей Токаева Любителя Запада. То Майдан прошёл бы в Казахстане удачно. Януковича тоже могли бы спасти и не дать развалить Украину , если бы у него мозгов и яиц хватило запросить помощь хоть от кого то.

"To kill a mockingbird." I also studied that book in English literature class at school in Ireland, despite the fact that it has nothing to do with our culture and history. It is so strange to see it in Mongolia too. How American culture encroaches on everyone. There is greater literature in the English language, but this one, with its particular view of America, and its particular political message, is the one that goes around the world for whatever reason. Even in American literature, there are plenty of books that give a better understanding of the American nation. I guess this will be until American culture moves on to the point where "To kill a mockingbird" too is regarded as anachronistic and gets cancelled. How sad to see the whole world being dumbed down to the level of your average American liberal.

I think you should get more recognition in the video producing world! I really do enjoy your videos more and more as new ones come out and I would really like to show my appreciation on how enlightening is to watch your videos. This one struck me in particular as I was in Mongolia years ago and I really did enjoy it to the last bit. Sadly I was there in winter when it was -35C which kind of ruined my touristy part of the trip but I must say I was, like you, impressed by the people and the country. I hope I will have a chance to visit it again, but this time I will not fly with Aeroflot as they lost my baggage on the way there ( unlucky I guess, stuck with no clothes in harsh winter ) :). Anyway I am really looking forward to your next videos and if you decide to come to Spain anytime soon, please let me know would be honored to meet you and maybe share a few words over a drink or a meal! The comparison between Russian and Western influence is a bit one-sided. You show higher lifestyle and expensive cars when spaeking of Western impact and mention slums and communal apartments when speaking of Russian influence in present-day Mongolia.
Pretty sure there are families that teach Russian and Chinese to their kids and have a high standard of living.
Also no word of any Chinese influence although the country has a border with China. I wonder if there's anything mongols associate with China in their culture. Given they're neighbours I believe there should be something.

Soviet Union did not want to include Mongolia, because it was one independent vote in UN, otherwise it would be 16th Soviet republic. Check also how much help Mongolia sent to USSR during WWII their contribution was great.
Ukraine snd Belarus had independant voices in UN.
If Stalin wanted it, he would take it and arrange separate vote for Mongolia in the UB, Russia never wanted it, to not provoke China...

False, they could maintain their UN vote just like UKraine for example. USSR didn't accept Mongolia be cause it would rise political tencions with China. Mao had it own "future vision" for so called "Outer Mongolia". Mind you "inner Mongolia" is part of Chinese state.

I wish all these urbanising countries would be smart and not repeat the mistakes of the 20th Century West - build and design for humans not cars, don't abandon humanistic architecture for cold glass and steel, and build for sustainability.
Yes, I felt sad for people moving out of yurts into tower block boxes. At least they had some outside space before! If it were me and if the economics made sense I would keep the yurt shape and style but build it out of concrete and modern materials. Here in the USA there are companies who will do that for you for no more cost than a normal house. You can even put the soil back on top and have the steppe-grasses grow on top of your "tent".
Can you elaborate more on your proposals? What do you mean "building for sustainability". Glass is cheap and steel is pragmatic and reliable?

The linguist turned security guard should be given a grant or funding to write a book on the USSR heritage of Mongolia before it disappears. His observations of local events might prove to be a historiographer's source of materials.

Guess that explains the rather long absence of new vids until now. It was really nice and interesting, though I've seen parts / similar scenes on youtube about it (like the ring commemorating their communist victory over japan and the nazi's. Really touching with the old man pining for the fjords, I mean, for the Soviet era to come back. Guess not everyone has bad memories of that time, thus. Truth be told, I wished you kept interviewing him a bit further, I'm really interested in how he sees things, and why he thinks it used to be better and such. You pick interesting topics, but it always seem so short, once watched - only leaving your viewes also pining for more - of the vid, that is.
Anyway, I think it was good enough to warrant another coffee, me thinks. ;-)
Ever thought of doing something in the same vein, but than more in-depth, like.... for an hour long vid about the lives of people and their thoughts on (their) life, and such?
And I said this before, but I really like the variety in your vids. Doubling the video length to an hour means exactly twice the production time, and that does lead to fewer videos and impacts revenue. It's the classic quality vs. quantity conundrum. If I had a team, we could churn out those hour-long documentaries a few times a month - maybe that's in the cards for the future, who knows? 🤔

@AniMageNeBy Tough the communism was a dirt poor it was a welfare society which could provide the bare minimums for its citizen. Some old generation mongols who couldn't transition to a competitive and market oriented economy fell to extreme poverty and alcoholism. Hence the "crying" for the soviet type welfare system.

Also remember, that while the US was comfortably sitting at their own separate continent with zero regional dangers, Russia was being constantly devastated by the most brutal conflicts in human history and was getting back on its legs without ANY foreign aid, since it was economically isolated. WW1, then the Civil War with twice as many casualties, then WW2 with the absolute devastation of the Soviet land and massive genocide of its citizens. Yet, they managed to be on par with the US on technological, military and social development. Sure, there were lack of some more luxurious commodities like cars but everyone had a decent housing, was provided universal healthcare and had food on the table no matter what.
Edit: also remember that the context is that in 1917 Russia was literally an agricultural feudal serfdom Empire, where the literacy rate was like 30-35%. And after 40 years the USSR launched the first man into space already.

With prosperity comes inequalities. It's a byproduct of success that must be contended with from the get-go. Mongolia has that opportunity whereas the US and Canada have some serious work do to turn things around. That said, it's undeniably better for some to succeed than none to succeed. As long as cash is flowing into the nation, they have options.
I think Mongolian obsession with English is less about picking practical allies and more about Mongolians wanting to go abroad. Maybe not necessarily to America, but if they want to go to Mexico or the Philippines or Germany, you're more likely to come across people who speak English and offer services in English than Russian or Chinese, although Chinese services are in more and more countries these days.
All the best to Mongolians and their courtship, times are looking up for places like Mongolia and Khazakstan
I’m from Russia, but I’m studying in Mongolia. According to my personal experience, about 50 percent of my Mongolian acquaintances under the age of 25 were able to go to another country to study, or for permanent residence.

Regarding on choosing the west or the east. these guys really need to realize where they’re at on the map or they’ll end up like Ukraine.

It is strange that we did not see in Ulaanbaatar a monument to the Russian general Baron Roman von Ungern, thanks to whom Mongolia became an independent state, unlike Inner Mongolia, which remained a province of China.
He kicked out the Chinese but Stalin is who got Mongolia it’s formal independence.
He was also mass murderer and have mental problems. Maybe that's the reason

Mongolia is nothing like it’s Asian neighbors they are simply Mongolians.
That’s all I’m saying. A lot of Asian countries have a lot in common like European states do.
Mongolia is so heavy in its own traditions which is why I said it’s one of a kind.
You must have been in Mongolia right before the school year started because that’s the only time they do ‘even’ and ‘odd’ number driving days. The rest of the year it’s also based on plate numbers but during the week it’s as follows: Mondays-1/6 can’t drive, Tuesday-2/7, Wednesday-3/8, Thursday-4/9, Friday-5/0. I’ve been in Mongolia for almost 19 years.

@@Dread_2137 Traffic jam is terrible in Ulaanbaatar, also Public Transportation Department is so corrupt, they bought scrapped buses from Korea and Reworked them in Vietnam to steal funds and launder money, basically Public Transportation is just awful. Thats why Mongols prefer to buy their own cars which leads to the Traffic jam problem.

Детишки уже не знают кто помогал стране до 90-х годов, учат английский, а не русский, как их старшее поколение, и заместо учебы в России, уезжают в западные страны. А почему? Почему влияние, на котором строилась политика нашей бывшей сверхдержавы, потеряно безвозвратно? Куда делось величие, в конце-то концов, кому его распродали и кто? Почему даже бывшие республики СССР относятся к нам с негативом? Азербайджан, Литва, Латвия, Украина, Грузия, и остальные. Другие потихоньку поворачиваются в сторону Китая или Европы, как видно с Казахстаном. Что теперь, только ракетами и дружбой с Беларусью во главе картофельного царя удивлять мировое сообщество? Ну бреееед, ну тоска, особенно точно подметил русскоговорящий монгол из видео: "Я плачу по ночам Костя, я плачу по ночам" 😢
Как это не грустно признавать, но Россия увядающая держава, с уменьшающимся количеством рабочих рук, которые и должны творить и создавать влияние. А всё из-за западных ценностей, чайлдфри, коренное образованное население стареет и вымирает.
Без возвращения к традиционным ценностям(скорее, даже религиозным) которые резко повысят рождаемость тренд на увядание России не переломить.

Монголия помогала во время второй мировой так как ни одна другая страна. Если СССР давал помощь, то Монголия ее многократно отработала. Также Монголия для СССР, за счет проживающих монгольских народов(бурятов и калмыков), не чужая страна. Если бы даже и бесплатно давали, то мы буряты не против. А мы буряты для СССР уж побольше дали чем СССР нам. Столько жизней и судеб загублено. Люди работали на благо страны отдавая весь потенциал и ничего не получая взамен.
Чем больше появляется более богатых, тем больше появляется бедных. Все взаимосвязанно.

I am not sure about language - educated mongol knows english, chinese and russian... One of them better, of course. Sometimes english switched to deigtch, france, corean or japanease, but russian or chinease is must have 🙂

In every school and university in Russia English language is an obligatory discipline. Why it should be different in Mongolia? English language is an international language and every educated person should to know it as a foreign language.
To think that they once conquered China, Central Asia and big part of present Russia.
And Middle East and some parts of Europe and South Asia.

Да потому, что не делали все по уму. Скольких монахов убили! А ведь внушительная часть населения Монголии были монахи... Да и монголы не за бесплатно получили эти блага цивилизации, помощь оказали громадную в войне. Плюс всегда существала скрытая ксенофобия, что в итоге вылилось в "сдаю квартиру только славянам".

По мне большей ошибкой, тяжелейшей ошибкой было вывести в 1936 году Казахстан и Киргизию из состава РСФСР.
Сегодня мы этими 2 странами, с большей частью Центральной Азии, большим населением и ресурсами были бы гораздо сильнее

I don't think Mongolia will ever be truly neutral, especially since China and Russia's relations have improved. The same thing could be said about Switzerland, they're surrounded by the EU on all sides and landlocked too, just like Mongolia.
