How to Rip Episodic DVD Sets for Free on Windows (Also Works on Mac and Linux)

- We've looked at ripping movies before, but this week we will answer the most common questions we've received. In particular we'll learn how to rip a DVD series where each disc has multiple episodes on it. We'll also touch on why we're using DVD instead of BluRay, and why we'd want to rip DVDs to our hard drive. And Robbie talks a lot, so prepare yourself to be schooled!

I had the Handbrake app on my Mac once, but for some reason I uninstalled it. Now, after seeing this presentation I've decided to download it on my pc and maybe on my Mac as well. VLC is my favorite media player; one that I always download on new computers, laptops, and touchpads. Thanks.
This was awesome. Most videos I found on this involved using MakeMKV first, followed by Handbrake. Was hoping to find a single step process like this and you guys did a great job explaining it all.
Many times when ripping a movie to my hard drive I get a response queue finished with 1error or cancellations detected. Do you have a solution for this problem?
Thank you so much for this video! I can now transfer all my elderly mother's DVD's to a Flash drive so I can hook my tablet up to her TV and play them for her since she no longer has a DVD player. Your video was so helpful and I appreciate the extra educational info. I know a lot of people here don't appreciate the extra dialog, but I did! I'm not tech-illiterate per say, but I don't know a lot of the newer technology so it was helpful to know what I was looking at. My only critic is that the screenshots of your laptop were very small and I could not see the details very clearly. I had to keep pausing to read the Handshake items I was supposed to make note of and change. I even used my reading glasses to get a better view but it didn't help. It would be nice if we could see a more close up view of your screen while you are walking us through the process. : )
I had the same problem -- small screenshots -- but then clicked in the lower right corner to expand full screen ... and then everything was clear.
Duuuude!! Yes!! I SO appreciate all this info!! (Your fans are right, you did talk a bit much LOL but it was well worth the wait!!) Edit: We bought The Office, because PeacockTV took the rights away from Netflix so instead of supporting the move we’re supporting The Office by buying the DVD set, which I’m now about to offload onto my computer and download Plex and upload it to that server! Very good advice on the settings, although with the newer version you can just set the frame rate to 'same' so that it will always encode at the same frame rate the DVD is. Also, I set the preset to HQ Best 480 and change the settings to what you did, this sets your slider and other things to the best quality possible. Another thing I do that was not addressed is set the audio to Pass through. That way the audio is unchanged as it takes up so little space anyway. My DVD finished files are usually around 1.2 to 1.6 GBs for an average length movie. Nice and small and no noticeable difference even on a 70 inch TV. Great video, thanks!

@@VitaliFishman Under Video, there is 'Frame Rate (FPS)' and set that to 'same as source' under the various options, and you should be good. Hope this helps!

Concerned about frame rate? Just use "Same as original", and select variable frame rate. I rip with a quality of 12-14. For De-interlacing DVD's use Decomb. The majority of Blu-rays are now Progressive, so no need to de-interlace. Audio tracks don't necessarily have to be re-encoded, You can choose the 'passthru' option - that said, IOS devices like AppleTV don't support DTS, so you will want to re-encode to an AAC version.

This does not work for Mac running Mojave. I've followed all the steps (despite being vague for Mac) and it doesn't work, or perhaps I'm doing it wrong. Id love it if you created a video specifically for Mac on how to do this!
The nice thing about RUclips is that if there is a topic being presented that is of no interest, it’s easy to move the slider past that topic ot just turn it off. As a person who primarily uses Windows, I find a lot of useful content on this channel such as the coverage of SBCs. I would guess that there are many Cat5 viewers who are users of Windows.
Question, I'm trying to rip my Dragon Ball Z season 5 set but when I go to title it only has 2 "episodes". It combined most of the episodes into one movie length file and I was wondering how to separate it.
Makemkv rips individual episodes at the same quality as the source disk and does not require re-encoding. It is a very fast process. It rips a dvd in less than 5 minutes. If you want, then use handbrake to re-encode to a smaller file size. I no longer bother with re-encoding because of the low price of high capacity hard drives.(By the way, no one has ever taken away my dvd or bluray players)
Thank you for your videos. I am using Linux Mint 21 and it is not working for my store purchased DVDs. Is there a particular version of Handbrake I should be using? It seemed easy for Windows and putting the dll file into Handbrake folder, but I cannot seem to accomplish success in Linux. Thanks again!
Hi, followed your instructions to the letter and my series 1-4 ripped beautifully, however as it is a Chinese drama I need the subtitles, in the subtitle menu I clicked widescreen English subtitles but it still burnt without subtitles. Is there any way to burn the dvd series so it shows the main menu and has subtitles?
Used your earlier video on ripping with no problems on Win 10 but am now on Apple iMac running Monterrey 12.3.1. Dpwnloaded and installled Handbrake 1.5.1. Where do I put the libdvdcss.dll module?

I have a lot or family home dvd movies some i created using pinnacle studio. i have some DVDs with scratches which software do you think would rip better hand Break or Winx DVD ripper.

Wanted to ask: I have some dvd's from Region 2(England) and still can't get Handbrake to read them. It only reads 50% then it just keeps idling. I've already ripped 5 of my Region 1 dvd's with no problem but still can't rip the British ones. Anyone else have this problem? Would really appreciate any advice on how to solve my problem, thanks!
I have a DVD recorder that also has a DVR in it. The HDD inside the DVR can accept a DVD movie, IF it's not copy protected. IF i use free software to copy a DVD which i own to my DVD recorder, i can put it on my DVR, where it's always available to watch. I wanna copy an episodic DVD to my DVR. How do i take an episodic DVD, and rip certain episodes to my computer that are in MPG format? If it's in MPG format, then i can convert it to DVD. If it's in MP4 format, it might lose some quality if i convert it to DVD. Thanks!
How do you rip the subtitles when you rip the video from DVD?
@Eiri Tezuka You can add additional audio and subtitles in the audio and subtitle tabs. Look at video 21:34.
I have tried this method as well as several others, and I still cannot rip my commercial DVDs. I have tried different versions of Handbrake, as well as different versions of libdvdcss to no avail. Either Handbrake cannot read the disk, or it reports that there are no titles found. I am running Win10 on an Acer Aspire 3 (A315-53-30BS), with an external Matshita DVD read/write drive (cheap Amazon purchase). I have been able to rip all of my DVDs that I created on writable disk, but cannot rip any of the commercial disks (my movie library). What can I be doing wrong?
I've done exactly what you've done and it's worked but when I've put it on a USB drive and plugged it into my Samsung TV the folder shows up but nothing else. Anyone got any ideas on why my TV won't detect the files.

Very good and informative but to much of a long thing,I was trying to rrip dvd movies that I own this week using VLC software. I tried ringing Rio Bravo,when I did it the movie ripped but there was no sound at all..Decided to buy WonderFox software from America and it rips my movies now without any issues..Not a long-winded process like you're doing where you have to download two different softwares to rip DVD movies..Who really as time for that?

Hey guys. Thank you for this video as it came when I was trying to rip a tv series dvd. I do have one question, anyway I can add a menu to it so I can choose which chapter to go to? Currently it just plays straight through.
The software setup with the current libdvdcss-2 on my WIN10 PRO computer does not work well with software on certain LIONSGATE and SONY productions. The video converts to a MP4 BUT it is messed up {either incomplete or not in the order of the film}. Is there a fix? Would it work better using version 1.12 vs version 2?

you mentioned naming the files i.e s01 ep02 etc for the plex media how should you name a movie ?
Correction to your statement: S01E02 is the format. Re movies, use Movie Title (Year), like: Zoolander (2001).mp4
what if i want to rip the episodes as 1 file? if the dvd has 5 episodes but i dont want 5 files i just want 1 file with all 5 episodes? help

My DVD collection consists of live rock concert performances from the 60's thru the 80's. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to rip the DVD so that I can have direct access to the individual tracks (songs) within the performance just like using the remote control of my blu-ray/DVD player. I am using Handbrake (Win 10) currently, and successfully ripping the disk, with chapter names that i had hoped would provide direct access. No joy there. So far i am saving to SSD and Flash Drive, with playback on my PC and 2016 vintage Samsung smart TV. Do I need to go the PLEX Server route to achieve the direct track access? Suggestions appreciated!

I think when you are naming a TV show file for use on Plex you have to put the name in front otherwise I think Plex gets confused.
I. E. Inspector Morse S01E01 then - and the episode title if you want it. Then you put the Season 1 episodes into a folder that says "Season 1" which is a subfolder of the show i.e. Inspector Morse>Season 1>Inspector Morse S01E01.
Or am I wrong? That was what I read on the Plex forums.

Yes, once you converted the .mkv into .mp4 delete the larger file you don't need it anymore.

Hi Mary. You can absolutely select multiple languages and subtitles while setting up the parameters for your rip. As I only speak English, I've only ever done a single language rip (disabling all the others), however the option is there. Just be sure to use a container (file format) that supports it, such as MKV. Try out your settings on a shorter video first if possible (to save you time in testing) and see if you're happy with the results. Save your settings as a preset and you can re-use them.

it recognizes 720x480/853x480 but it sets its self to 720x364/853x364 what is going wrong
Best guess: Your source video is widescreen, so your resulting files won't have the full height. Think of 720x480 as the max. Then, you get 720x364 because your video is less high than a full-frame video. Widescreen vs. 4:3.

The other alternative is to score vpn and pirate bay or yts and download whatever you like. Someone else has already done the ripping.

Most of the dvd player that I´ve owned has been region free at least they are alot of them here in Sweden. But otherwise to spare your dvds its a greate idea to rip them to a server.

DVD Decrypter and Make MVK beta is all that you need. If you are pushed for space, use Format Factory. Handbrake SUCKS ass. I still torrent by the way.

Did all said unfortunately didn’t work, this is 2023 most probably this instruction is now out of date, thanks for posting I’ll get WINX now, it costs but as they say you get what you pay for.
You're doing this the hard way, Google THESE: Nuclear Coffee Disc ripper and Freemake Video Converter. Much easier and disc ripper can rip ALL the DVD and defeat CopyRight crap and get you perfect video rips, To reburn to DVD you then need to use Freemake Video Converter then you're ready to go..If you don't wanna burn it to DVD you can just watch the ripped files.
I tried Nuclear Coffee DVD Ripper, and it read the disks, but could not rip. First disk, it said "The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec..." Second DVD, it reported the format was "incompatible... contact the author..." These are commercial movie DVDs that I purchased on Amazon/Walmart.

I thought max resolution is 720 and I also like makemkv.
720 is the width. We don't refer to the width in the short forms. For example, 1080p is 1920x1080. We don't call it 1920p. So in your example, 720 width would typically be part of 720x480 (480p) or 720x360 (360p).
Dvd with subtitles as part of the movie or tv program, ie like the planet of the apes need to have the subtitle burnt in. Please watch out for these types of DVDs or you end up with no idea what is going on.
just use makemkv to rip, no need to look for vlc plugins

Sorry, but it doesn't make any sense to me, that you show this whole procedure on Windows OS considering the 'nature' of this channel. You are talking some minutes about how to download the library file and where to put it etc and only say on Linux you have to choose a different location. Well ... maybe novice users would be more interested in pointing out the whole procedure for Linux instead of Windows.

Our channel makes Linux (and other tech) available to fans from all walks of life who use all sorts of technology in their day-to-day lives. This includes Windows, Mac, Google, and Amazon, to name a few. When we demonstrate this and other outstanding tools for Windows, we paint Linux in a positive light of being accessible to the same user: "This is also available on Linux!" - let's get excited about that fact and present it to Windows users in that way. To do otherwise is to do a disservice to open source, and indeed to the users who simply don't know about Linux yet. I would hope that you, as a Linux fan, would get excited about our approach to revealing Linux to the masses in a fun and approachable way.
