you can tell what a pedal sounds like from the color. I always check to make sure I don't already have one of those before I buy. then I ask myself if I really need a pedal that costs more than the entire arsenal of guitars and amps (well, actually one of each) I started out with in 1967. but if the pedal has a cool color and a cool name, then the answer is usually yes, I absolutely NEED that!

Beetronics makes some aesthetically interesting pedals that definitely help define the brand. Even the circuit boards inside are all different looking with unique shapes and colors that go along with the theme of each pedal enclosure. I agree with the shout out to Way Huge, as I still use their discontinued Pork Loin for a boost.

“You pedal people” - I love how my background and experience level is polar opposite to Baxter but we have the same views on pedals. “They’re like M&Ms! They’re cool to look at and pour over, but I don’t actually use them! I just like looking at the cool designs in the case!”
I think another important thing to take into consideration is ease of use/complexity. Sometimes you might want only one or two knobs and you don’t have the patience to play around with infinite dials and settings.
Sometimes you might know exactly what you want and you need all of those switches and options to dial it in.
As far as pedals that look the coolest, I think the Seamoon Funk Machine looks amazing. I don’t know if it’s a particularly good or useful envelope filter, but it sure looks cool!!

Part of how I pick a pedal is how I’d pick a certain color of crayon as a kid. I grab or purchase a certain pedal for its sound and features and how it works for the songs I’ll be playing that gig or that church service. Being a graphic designer, I also enjoy limited edition pedals from an artistic standpoint, but that is secondary to the sound and features.

As a hobbyists, I will buy the type of pedal based on the application. I.e. this song needs delay... well i'll go buy a delay pedal. Which delay pedal i buy is based on how it alters my tone , if i set the pedal's levels to their lowest settings and just use volume/drive if there is one... i will a/b select between on/off to hear if it adds, takes away, or keeps the same. Ive noticed a "good" reverb pedal (gamechanger, death by audio, etc. Etc.) Will keep the original character of my rig, and adds the effect. A "bad" pedal tends to make my amp sound thin and cheap, and then adds the effect. I feel like a lot of people buy based on how many different sounds/effects they get from the pedal, versus how its affecting their tone... or like you said, how it looks.

7:37 Lol I love the sound of the Small Stone and Small Clone. I have a Small Clone and suffered through the signal-suck for ages until my friend got me a Caline Lucky 7 pedal (we like finding these hidden gems in the budget pedal world and then blowing each other’s minds) with a bunch of mod fx and it is so good it’s stupid. A few of the modes are utterly useless but the 4 or 5 that don’t suck are the best versions of those sounds I’ve found. I keep trying to replace that pedal for different applications (tremolo, vibe, etc) but it just sounds so good. And doesn’t suck tone. You’d think that a cheap pedal with cheap components (yes, the switches, jacks and pots are almost always garbage on budget pedals) would suck tone but nothing compares to the Small Stone and Small Clone in that respect 😅!

The mxr distortion + is a variant of the dod 250, or the other way around. My favorite type are the amp in a box style. I have a few of the fender deluxe styles, brown face, tweed, black face. I don't think that they turn my ac15 into the real sound but they capture a sound for sure. BTW I don't care about colors or shapes just sounds. Keep up the good work.

I didn't on purposely buy nice looking pedals. But my board starts out with a Dime wah. Only because back in the day I only read magazines, didn't do internet. Read about features of Dime wah and decided right there that's what I want. 2003-4 whenever that was released to public. Still not very good wah player but it's the 1st on my board. When looking for a EQ pedal knew I wanted a MXR 10 band. Found a used silent modded KFK for $100. Now I know none of K King's music but at the end of my board is another looking cool pedal. Got a couple Boss pedals but not for color. Both blue, both modded, both bought used. Got other pedals but again not for colors. Most my modded pedals have different colors lights and that's definitely something I look for. In fact got a Coolmusic modulation pedal that has 3-4 sounds I use and it lights up the coolest green. That makes it worth not looking for more better multi mod type pedal. Plus it's small real estate. That's actually my biggest issue with any pedal. How much R Estate vs use. I bought all kinds of modded Boss pedals and could have a super sharp color board but wouldn't have the best sound I can or wouldn't have as much space as having 4 mini's to give me toe-tapping room. I know Boss pedals are easy to toe tap though. And I love the phaser green. But pedal sucks compared to my Mooer liquid phase, a mini.

You just watch the RUclips influencers and buy what they say. I don’t know if I need a pedal board for my SD1?

Sure a cool looking pedal will catch my eye, but I wouldn’t buy it just because it looks cool
I’ll look at what it does, and I know which pedals I am looking for
I don’t like the look of every pedal I own, but I like the sound of them.

I'm really dumb, so I like pedals and amps with as few knobs as possible. If there's too many controls I just find a million ways to make everything sound worse.
