Story time: My father worked in the music industry in the 50's and early 60's. He walks into his parent's house and finds my Grandmother listening to this song. He asked her, "so, you like this song?" She says, " oh yes! Very much! His voice, the harmony, the story, it's wonderful." He asked her, " so you think it's going to be a hit?". She says, "Absolutely! It's playing all over the radio, everyone is talking about it." Then my Father says to her, "I wrote that song, it's one of mine.." My grandmother was in shock, astonished at the news. She then went all over the county, telling all of her friends, acquaintances, even strangers she met in the store he wrote it! People began to doubt her, so she demanded he come with her and prove to them he wrote it! My Father being a great practical joker, said why did you tell them that, I was just kidding you?? She got so mad she pushed him out of the house and wouldn't talk to him for almost a year! 😂

My great-grandfather was a US Deputy Marshall in West Texas. My grandfather, who was born in 1880 and passed away in 1976, told many stories of his father's experiences in West Texas and a part of Southwest Oklahoma that was then Texas. There weren't a lot of law officers around during that time, and often, matters were settled outside of the law between two people. My grandfather passed down many stories that my father had written down, and I have now about his father chasing outlaws and his life as a frontier lawman. My grandfather always told me that his father said that many lawmen would work both sides of the law. They would do whatever was necessary to survive and feed their families. I loved your reaction as always ❤️.
My great-grandfather was born in 1883 in Tucson, Arizona, (my hometown) and was a bounty hunter when it was still considered the "wild west" he died when I was just a kid in the early 1960s. but the stories of how it really was compared to the Clint Eastwood movies in the 70s was huge 😂
Years ago an ol' dj told a story from back when MR was touring in a rock and roll show. He invited him to have a meal at his house because Marty was homesick and he accepted. After supper he asked their opinion of a song he wrote because he wanted to get into country music, and proceeded to play El Paso in their kitchen. They loved it and Marty never forgot them through the years for kindness and support. Stand-up guy with a great voice too.

I claim this song for my Mexican wife and I. I was raised in el paso Texas and that's where I met my wife. We have been married for 38 years so far. And yes there is a cantina named rosa' s at the foot of a hill, great place.
I wished I had known this, I would have found it back in 2000 when I went by El Paso. I took my parents (both gone now) on a trip out west, they would have loved stopping there.
El Paso came out in 1959 and was released as a 45 taken from his classic album 'Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs.' It topped the country music chart and also went to #1 on the pop charts. Marty was such a versatile singer and also a great songwriter. Add in the fact that he was a charismatic stage performer and so obviously loved to sing, he really was the real deal.
I'm Australian, and in 1977 married a US Navy sailor from El Paso. Because my in-laws couldn't come to the wedding we took a movie of it, and put this song in as background music. I lived there for a little while and could not believe how different it was to Melbourne! It was like living in a movie set!

I was 5 years old when this song came out. In the 60s, Western movies and TV shows were very popular. Shows lie "Gunsmoke", "The Wild, Wild West", "The Rifleman" and others were on TV all the time. I don't think they were very historically accurate but it gave us kids fantastical ideas to act out in our playtime.

My family has a silly attachment to this song. My parents who were married for 50 years had one big fight when my Dad had been looking after a drying sister silly things boiled over. Dad was overwhelmed by emotions and took a bus out of town across 3 States but we tracked him down to El Paso. It doesn't make sense but we adopted this song.

Marty Robbins was an American original in every way. Very talented musician, singer, and song writer, and most people don't know that he also drove race cars. While in the prime of his music career, Marty tried his hand at NASCAR racing at the top level. From the early 70s to the early 80s, he drove in 35 races with 6 top ten finishes and 1 top five. Not at all bad for a part time racer competing with NASCAR's top drivers of the day.
I enjoyed this one. This was one of my late father's favorite songs and I heard him singing it at the kitchen table many many times. I could almost feel him standing behind me as I was watching this video
The store they are in is indeed an 'everything store' it's a an old fashioned "General Store", which sold everything from clothes, tools, boots and cookware to flour, sugar, canned goods and other food stuffs. They were the hearts of frontier towns in the old west. Cheers!

This was the first number one Billboard hit of the 1960's there are several gems on this album including "Big Iron". It was my mom's favorite album. The guitar playing on this song is just wonderful.

4:47 - I'm 32 and I love this older stuff. And when I watch it, it makes me badly wish that I could crawl through my screen and live in that time. Things were more simple and less chaotic. The store they are in is indeed an 'everything store' it's a an old fashioned "General Store", which sold everything from clothes, tools, boots and cookware to flour, sugar, canned goods and other food stuffs. They were the hearts of frontier towns in the old west. Cheers!

Marty Robbins wrote "You Gave Me a Mountain" which Elvis did an incredible version of on his "Aloha From Hawaii" concert. This was the first number one Billboard hit of the 1960's there are several gems on this album including "Big Iron". It was my mom's favorite album. The guitar playing on this song is just wonderful.

Robbins was one of the most popular and successful country & western singers for nearly five decades 40's-80's. He had so many hits such as "Singing The Blues", "Devil Woman", "A White Sport Coat", "The Story of My Life", "Don't Worry", "Big Iron", "Knee Deep In The Blues", "Honkytonk Man", "Don't Worry 'Bout Me", "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" etc.

I don’t know if you have reacted to Don McLean’s American Pie yet, but one of the lyrics in the second or third verse refers to a Bronckin’ Buck and a Pink Carnation, and that’s a reference to the above White Sportcoat song. It was a huge hit. 😄
4:47 - I'm 32 and I love this older stuff. And when I watch it, it makes me badly wish that I could crawl through my screen and live in that time.
Things were more simple and less chaotic. People were more classy and everything had it's own style. From cars, homes, and random appliances. I would've loved to have lived in the 1950's.
