    EDIT: To everyone saying 'You're not a beginner at D&D if it's been 4 years', please I ASSURE YOU I'm very much a beginner still. We can barely meetup because of conflicting schedules, so I've only played a handful of times really. It's my fault though, I should've worded it differently so everyone would understand. Still, please, PLEASE believe people when they tell you something about themselves. It's so very frustrating to hear someone tell you 'No, actually' and start arguing about something you stated that only YOU can know and only YOU can feel. Thank you~

      Hello! Fellow Baldur's Gate noob here, and watcher of your Mass Effect playthrough. I'm watching this video but I don't know how long I will watch this series because I am in my own playthrough, and don't want to be spoiled. Still, I would watch the first few ones. P.S.: Are you aware that the series was created by BioWare, of Mass Effect fame? This game wasn't made by them, but you're going to love it, I think.

    • @nickrubin7312
      @nickrubin7312 Год назад +4

      @@bwalker77 yeah, Bioware defined the whole genre with BG1-2 (1998 and 2000, played on release being 16 year old) and a lot of RPGs that came after (NWN, modern Owlcat's Pathfinder games in style, Pillars of Eternity, even their own DA and ME series, tho mostly DA:Origins). It was also one of the first, if not the first, so-called "western" RPGs that introduced romance into the game (so it is a bit strange to see people complain about the game being a bit "naughty"), aside from being story-driven games with rich characters. Gameplay didn't age well for the modern audience, but the story of the originals is exceptional, and I would say BG3 is a worthy successor.

      I love your playthroughs and really looking forward to this one. I'm not far in the game, taking it slowly. I think you'll have a blast. A couple things I noticed that may help you: You can enter turn based mode any time, which would have helped you kill that intellect devourer with fire bolt when you were practicing. Second, you can split your party and control individuals without them following each other. This will be essential for navigating things like traps. Third, you can hear encounters in the distance by panning the camera around so be sure to learn the camera controls.

      There are actually more than a hundred D&D based video games, starting all the way back in 1988 with Pool of Radiance and Heroes of the Lance (both released on NES and home computers like the C64).
      The majority of these games are set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting (this includes Baldur's Gate), but others also use different settings, including Krynn/Dragonlance, Planescape, Mystara, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Greyhawk (the first official D&D setting created by Gary Gygax), Eberron, Al'quadim (which was later integrated into the Forgotten Realms), Blackmoor (the setting used for D&D on release but not the first setting created for D&D, was integrated into the Mystara campaign world), Birthright and a few generic, unspecified non-offical settings.
      PS: Most of these games use other editions of D&D of course because they predate the release of D&D 5e. The original Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 use the AD&D 2e rules for example.
      PPS: Tieflings can come from all kinds of Lower Plane ancestors. In Baldur's Gate 3 they are limited to devil bloodlines, but they can also have demonic, daemonic and other types of fiendish ancestors as well.
      PPPS: The bonus points for attributes are different because Larian removed the racial attributes and instead lets everyone choose on which attribute to spend the bonuses. They did this to allow people more freedom in race/class combinations without repercussions. We all know that min-maxers only look at the best possible stat bonuses for the class they want to play and therefore would have felt that they needed to pick certain races for certain classes, something Larian didn't want to happen - so they changed this.

    I will give you one tip, and one tip only (this game is so deep, you don't want to spend your time reading advices from noobs): look for spells that are "Until Long Rest" and, if they're useful, cast them outside of combat. For example, there is no reason your glass character shouldn't have Mage Armor active all the time. Plus, casting them outside of combat means you're not losing any important combat turn.

    I love to hear what kind of characters people make in D&D! :) So the little backstory for your Lilith was nice!
    I also made my character to be as much as possible like my first D&D character, too! She's an Half-Elf Fighter, Battlemaster subclass, with the Entertainer (Gladiator) background. Short version is she was forced to fight in the arena along with all the other gladiators, as prisoners and all, but they all teamed up and broke free, went their separate ways, and now she's roaming the continent, using the skills she learned in the arena to fight the same kind of oppression that once kept her prisoner. Chaotic Good. Short, white hair, purple eyes, and a slight scar over one of them, fighting with two scimitars!
    I loved that I managed to make her in my Baldur's Gate game, or as close as possible considering it's a video game. Unfortunately I have other D&D characters I made that I can't make in here because either the races and/or the subclasses are not in there. A few examples include a Warforged Wild-Mage Sorcerer, a Fire Genasi Drakewarden Ranger, a Goblin Armorer Artificer and an Eladrin multiclass Monk (Way of the Sun Soul)/Druid (Circle of Dreams).
    Maybe one day they will add those races and subclasses! But for now I'm just happy with my Half-Elf! :)

    • @bjorntantau194
      @bjorntantau194 Год назад +4

      @@tanthokgMost Quests have at least two ways of completing them. Many even more. And depending on who you align with, how you treat people, who's dead and who's alive the story changes down the line.
      You can play as one of the origin characters and influence their story through their eyes or gain or lose their trust as companions. And they also have their personal story that can take multiple paths and outcomes. You can romance them.
      Depending on which path at what time you take some things can change. There are almost infinite possibilities.
      Just in the tutorial alone she could have freed the brain, not rescued Shadowheart or not teamed up with her, Shadowheart and Lae'zal could have both died. All these things can already have massive consequences down the line.

    • @tanthokg
      @tanthokg Год назад

      @@bjorntantau194 oh I see. But does that mean the gameplay get repetitive, since you have to do the looting, fighting, inventory managing all over again?

    • @bjorntantau194
      @bjorntantau194 Год назад +4

      @@tanthokg Not for me. Inventory management is not that hard. You've got filters to quickly find what you need. And you can assign stuff to sell them later when you pick them up.
      And fights can take so many different turns. On my second playthrough I played an evil character so I even had other fights and allies than before. I also completely ignored one huge section of the game because my character didn't have any reason to go there. And I was even able to oneshot a major boss by pushing him down a chasm.
      And at the end of the day you can let the dice decide how the story goes. But at the moment I'm on my third playthrough and try to play my good character from my home game and will try to save as many people as possible, even if it means to do some save scumming.

    Kudos to you for using the actual character sheet from your IRL campaign! I do that a lot too (as a former DM for many years, I still have tons of old sheet stats for NPC's and players) and it's pure joy seeing these figures and numbers "come to life" in a video game dedicated to DnD (or Pathfinder for that matter). Even if the stats are not recommended, it's just so much fun - and interesting - to see just how far a specific character can get in the game with sheer roleplaying as the main focus (I've never been one for min/max character builds as I find it far more appealing to make characters with flaws). Thankfully BG3 allows a lot of mistakes and even encourage them for a more grand experience.
    Thanks for a wonderful serie to follow and it truly shines through just how ecstatic you are about the game!

    On the other side I play a lot of RPGs and sandbox survival games on PC that allow customized character development.
    BG3 is definitely next level when it comes to player decisions. We are basically free to do everything in a way we like. We can decide on what side we want to fight, or just leave all fighting aside and sneak our way through the game, or snipe every NPC to just loot as much as possible. And every quest and every cut-scene reacts on what we have done!

    I'd like to share some trivia that the game doesn't tell you about (and of course, if Larian doesn't fix the PS5 tutorial issue soon, there's even less information):
    While you can only use the main character to talk to other PCs, every member of the party can initiate a conversation with an NPC.
    And while one of your characters is having a conversation with an NPC, you can generally use the other characters to do something else (especially something you don't want said NPC to notice), by simply switching characters at the conversation screen.
    It's also possible to have several people try the same thing individually, for example, if you somehow rolled a 1 against the 2DC dice when you're trying to open Shadowheart's pod, you could still have Lae'zel try it once.

    Something the game won’t tell you Shadowheart’s, firebolt will always be a weak attack unless you redo her stats. She gets it because she’s a half elf and it uses her intelligence modifier for her attack rolls. Her intelligence is not high enough to make it worth it.
    Sacred flame is better, but it relies on a dexterity save so it won’t work against high dexterity enemies

    • @thomasjoychild4962
      @thomasjoychild4962 3 месяца назад +1

      And act 1 has loads of goblins, who tend to have good dexterity, and is when she's lowest level so the DC is lowest. It's a combination that serves to make sacred flame seem rubbish as a first impression, sadly. Shadowheart actually has NO bonus from INT to fire bolt with her default stats, It's great for igniting environmental objects and surfaces though.

  • @petergriffin-cq5kw
    @petergriffin-cq5kw Год назад +3

    The use of the environment is key. Like shooting fire bolts at those purple containers inside the nautiloid, or even lamps, powder or oil barrels can turn the tide of a battle or even make it super easy. Also, use the terrain to your advantage, attacking an enemy from a high surface or using corridors as choke points can save a lot of time (and reloads). BTW, loved the video.

    35:30 The peoblem is... all are pretty cool.
    49:05 Horn color representing your channel colors. Nice.
    51:55 Game is like "Oh, you spend a lot of time doing character creation? Here create another one! "
    01:17:30 If you have played similar RPGs like this so far it wasn't that complicated. Just some of the technicalities are different. Many RPGs have a D&D system in the background, but just hide it to the player to make it easier for them. X-Com, Knights of the Old Republic and others feel similar, but you just don't see the dice rolls and stuff like that. This just dives deeper into the D&D side.
    01:23:35 Haha, I pressed a button in the other room and it turned one of the people in the pods into a mind flayer. After that and didn't try the others. 😂
    01:35:45 I mean, Shadowheart doesn't have to move as much now.
    Happy that you could create your character in that detail! She looks amazing! Can't wait for more videos!

Originally I was going to have her mom dead, but now I have her alive because she is interesting now too. So tabletop am playing a Gith Star Druid, father Githzerai, mother Githyanki Rogue. Her mother had high renown from fighting Mind Flayers and so some of the game I'm actually using as her back history because it fits so well! Love it.

    If it helps, I remade my 5e tabletop character for my first post-release BG3 playthrough. I wanted to see how close to the book rules Larian was able to keep an Oath of the Ancients paladin (pretty damn close, would have liked more levels to find out more fully), but, let me tell you, I give my GM fits and those same abilities were wildly helpful in BG3.
    A bit of trivia in Baldur's Gate history: the first 2 BG games were made by BioWare, who went on to do Mass Effect. Mark Meer, who voiced BroShep in Mass Effect (plus all of the vorcha, all of the hanar, and some of the volus), had one line as an NPC at the very end of BG2. The existence of the hamster in Mass Effect is a direct tribute to the first 2 BG games. Many of the lines that Tali says to her drone in Mass Effect are references to lines from the first 2 BG games (like when she says "go for the optics," it's a reference to a BG character telling his hamster to "go for the eyes"). Of all of the characters in all of the games that BioWare has created, the only one with a portrait/bust/statue (I don't recall which form the tribute takes) in BioWare's headquarters in Edmonton is Minsc, the caretaker of Boo, the miniature giant space hamster.
    And Larian did a very nice job paying homage to BioWare in BG3.

    One of my favorite stories about Wild Magic sorcerer shenanigans is one time, a roll for what magic surge they got was an anti-magic field that stretched 300 feet in all directions, and the player said the DM started frantically looking through his notes to confirm if that would cause what he hoped it wouldn't, eventually saying, "Oh that's not good."
    Turns out, under the town was a terrasque (which, if you didn't know, is easily one of the most powerful enemies in DnD. A group of 8 level 20 players would need to have a solid strategy to fight one, and would still probably die) imprisoned using immovable rods, whose enchantment was negated by that anti-magic field, thus unleashing it. "Oh that's not good" indeed.

    “i am going to discover the lore with this game” i’m in the same boat! i knew nothing about D&D before i saw clips of BG3 about two years ago when it was in early access. all i knew was that it reminded me of Dragon Age (BioWare’s other series of games besides Mass Effect), i liked the Tieflings, and i adored Astarion’s sarcasm. it wasn’t until i started dating my current boyfriend last year (who’s a huge D&D nerd) that i was a bit more educated on the lore and found out that the Baldur’s Gate games take place in the D&D universe. i watched a bit of Critical Role and really enjoyed watching D&D games, though i have yet to play one myself. my boyfriend was really determined for us to play all three Baldur’s Gate games together in order in co-op, but we’re long distance for now so it would be really difficult to get the first two working properly. he told me last weekend when BG3 dropped for console to play without him, as he doesn’t want to hold me back from such a fantastic RPG, and i’ve been having a blast. i made an Elf Druid 💜
    it’s really interesting playing BG3 as a D&D noob, and even playing it first before the other games since it takes place 100 years after them so it isn’t a continuous story! the first two could basically work like prequels after playing BG3. can’t wait to see you delve into the game 💜

      yeah, streaming this with chat is a bit rough, since the game provides “individual experience” (at least the illusion of it) with different paths, blending all the side quests and main quest into "one story that you're part of", and all the lore being not only dialogue/cutscenes, but "hidden" in the books, notes, item descriptions, and some contextual lore behind passive checks that you can fail as well (and the game doesn't care and will move on anyway), but chat can't take it, just as much as everyone has opinion on the order of doing things, while there is none really, mostly it is free-flow exploration kinda "look around and find out". Seen a lot of new player streams where chat was backseating so hard it made streamer rely a lot on chat's opinion like it is definitive truth which lead to not so fun experience overall.
