Can’t believe I haven’t seen this one before because this is my very task for today. I’m just about to spend some on a big light and a softbox and looks like I’ll have to get a 1’x1’ floppy panel too...”through gear to excellence”, yeah no really, I’m at the hardware store dirty light set up as yet. This is useful & motivational for me.
I recently videoed myself reading a lecture using an iPad Pro as a TelePrompTer and worked out some of the considerations you explain so clearly. The takeaways for me are to use the my 45mm f1.8 Om my G85 and to get a soft box! Thanks - really helpful and clear especially setting the camera height just above eye level. I got to that placement, but by trial and error, not knowledge from someone with greater experience.
Thanks for the useful tips! We love filming people looking directly into the camera so designed our Magic Video Box. It transforms from interview to teleprompter mode in seconds and makes the filming relaxed and fun. We have just launched the Magic Video Box and would love to hear what you think.
Hello Grant, thank you for the refresher. My question is how far from my subject should I be using a 10mm, 18mm, or 35mm lens mounted to a super 16 system?
+DKVideo on the 80d I use the touchscreen to select focus and then lock it to manual. I'll often toggle the af/mf focus button on screen to check focus.
Oh those awful rooms! I've shot in so many similar locations - boxy bland offices with dreadful echoey sound and a wall of light coming in from the window at one end. Truly dreadful. I sympathise with you. Curious though, since you had blinds for the windows and lots of lights, why not shoot against them to give you a bit more interesting backdrop? Oh and a tip from me: never let your interviewee sit on a swivel chair if you can avoid it, they often fidget during interviews!
Yes good tip about swivel chair, have struck that before as well. We decided to shoot against the wall as the director wanted a neutral background that we could replicate in other locations so as not to bias one candidate against the other with different backdrops and yes fighting boxy room audio was the biggest challenge! Cheers

Very very helpful - even for someone who's been doing video for 5 or 6 years. Thanks!

Hey Grant, your link for "My Video Gear" doesn't work. Thought I'd tell you so you could fix it... Cheers. :-)
Good tutorial man... no bs!

I couldn't tell you sorry without experimenting with such a setup.
Going crazy on the YT videos lately Grant! Good one!
Ha - I was away on holiday for some time so thought it was high time I caught up with producing some content! How's the Osmo going?
Very informative video - thanks for the effort. Have you used manual focus or relied on Dual Pixel autofocus?

What recording frame rates do you use to shoot these type of videos, 24, 30, or 60? I'm shooting a two shot talking heads video.
I will always shoot in our (Pal) standard frame rate of 25fps which is the same as 30fps if you are in North America. Cheers
What is the best camera to buy if your a non-profit and have almost no budget?
Mark Hallam Canon T7i/800D Right now..
