It would be nice if you did a 1 2 3 with the same phrase like “testing 123 this is how it sounds” on the go and then direct cut to the lav+ followed by a direct cut to the wireless so we can hear them side-by-side.
They do sound pretty close, some have suggested they are the same microphone only with a different connection, yet to me there is a subtle difference. I feel the noise levels are similar but the bass on the SmartLav + might be a bit more present. Again very close indeed.
TREMENDOUSLY thoughtful and helpful comparison presentation, not just of lav mics but also audio recorders. Rode SC3 or Movo MC4 adapter can be used with SmartLav+ mic. Thank you!
Mate firstly thanks for taking the time and effort to do this very quick and great comparison. I already have a SmartLav+ and just purchased a Wireless GO. I don't know if my hearing has diminished with age but I found it very hard to notice any difference between the three. And they all sounded great. Oh, and a BIG thumbs up.

The Smartlav+ is definitely is best sound. I don't use wireless, I'm using Tascam DR10's instead of wireless. The decision wasn't due to the sound quality as much as it was about buying products with built-in batteries.
No one seems to want to comment on the durability of these lavs. Most lav's over the £50 price point tend to sound decent and believe it or not the greatest difference between a £50 lav mic and a £500 lav mic isn't the sound quality. A pro lav mic will usually be smaller and easier to conceal. It will also be 'repairable' so a broken cable isn't the end of the road. Also the cable is usually kevlar reinforced or steel meaning more durable but also easier to rig because it doesn't devolve into a scraggy mess as soon as it's unpacked and take a lifetime to untangle. So when I see a comparison that compares sound quality only and doesn't take into account these other incredibly important characteristics/features I'm left feeling underwhelmed. And in answer to some of the comments below commenting on the audio 'quality' when really they're commenting on the tone, just because a mic has more base or treble in it's tone does not mean it is better or worse 'quality'. It's like saying which one of these spanners is best the and judging them based on size.

Thanks for your input. Most people seem to agree with that Smarlav sounds great. However as you say, EQ really makes the difference in the end. So both can sound great with the right EQ applied. 👍
To me the GO sounds flatter and truer. The Lav+ sounds richer with more midbass and lower end. So does that make the Lav+ better? Not necessarily. It all depends on what you want. Everything can be modified in post, but you may not want to bother with that. I find most consumers like a little more "color" in their sound as opposed to something that is flat. So with that said, the Lav+ would be a better choice. Though if you go with the GO mic, you can always EQ it if you want, but requires that extra step.
Yes you can, the Rode Lav Go has a 3.5 TRS connection that works with most cameras that have a 3.5 audio input. Although I haven't tested on the M50 I have done it on my Canon EOS R which has the 3.5 mic input and it works just fine.

Great, thanks for checking out the video. Yeah Final Cut Pro has all the features you need to master your audio. So If you are editing with FCP it makes sense just to use that. You can use dedicated audio programs like Logic for even more advanced audio editing but I don't think you need to as Final Cut Pro has everything you need. Basically you would just need to apply some light noise reduction, a compressor, some EQ and and possibly a limiter and you are there.
Hi there thank you for your video that was so helpful! Where do you recommend purchasing these products? I’ve been told that the road microphone is not always the correct model when purchasing it off of Amazon. Is there a better store or website to go to for this?
What is your preference? Smart Lav + is little more bass in my hearing so it should be better depending on case. In terms of TRS-TRRS adapter for Smart Lav+, do you think it makes little noise due to the adapter especially moving environment like gimbal shoot(connector may be rotated or contacted while fast movement).
Both very close but yeah I do like the Smart Lav + the adapter doesn't introduce any additional line noise at least that I can notice. But you might have a point about risk or disconnection if you are in a fast moving situation. However it certainly is quite solid and I haven't had any issues for general walking around scenes etc.
Which one would you recommend for recording lectures on ipad where noise cancellation is the the most important factor (as the room I would be recording in isn't acoustically treated) and I would want to avoid undergoing the hassle of using a powered usb hub and a lightning to OTG adapter for a USB microphone. Would a lapel mic cancel surrounding noise. If yes, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance.
Just got and have been testing the Rode WG2.......occasionally getting an audio surge that shows up on the TX internal recording as well as on my EOSR....haven't been able to figure out what that is from yet. What settings have you found work best as far as in the EOSR manual audio settings with the RWG2? I am currently experimenting with various levels on the mic and camera.
I am not sure what could be causing an audio surge. It sounds strange could be interference of some kind or a fault with the unit if it happens too often, I would check that. As for the settings I go into manual mode on the EOSR and have it quite low at about -12 to -24 db. I set the Rode to around -12DB(Middle one) and there is very little line noise with these settings. Best to use headphones as you check and you can hear it in real time.

Thanks for checking out the video, glad you liked it. I believe the Huawei P30 Pro has a usb type C port. So you would need to get an adaptor for usb c type 3 to 3.5 audio (TRRS) I haven't tested so can't be sure.

I think the quality in the wireless Go is much the same really. So I would only get the Lav Go or Smart Lav+ with the SC3 adaptor in order to hide the mic better.
Wait a second. When you unplugged the first lavalier to switch to the second one, your audio AUTOMATICALLY switched to the Wireless Go device. Was it automatic, or made in editing? How did the audio switch from the lavalier directly to the wireless go during recording?
Have you had issues with the SmartLav+ and static from the 3.5mm plug on it? I have one and I have a lot of issues with it making noise off and on based on the flexing of the plug. I noticed on your recording of yours in the video I could hear a little static off and on as your were using it. But that might be the wireless Go making the noise.
Not much at all that I have ever noticed. However it can appear occasionally on any lav mic usually depends on where I position the mic or the transmitter an if they have any contact with clothing etc as I am moving. So really there should not be excessive static at all using the Smart Lav plus, not more than any other mic I have tested.
@@Touchtechnologyreview Thanks. I actually just got a new one in the mail today and I tried it on my zoom and it works great with no static. I'm pretty sure there is a loose connection in the 3.5mm plug of my other mic that is causing it.

@@Touchtechnologyreview I think it is a manufacturing defect as it starting happening right when I got it but it is off and on but so it was usable. It's in the metal tip and not in the cord part. Not a ware thing either. I submitted a request for repair to Rode last night. We will see if they replace it or not.
Great Review. Quick question- I am planning to live broadcast my wedding's ceremony inside St. Mary's Cathedral via phone and wondering which mic I should buy. SmartLav or VideoMic Me-L ? Not fussed about having mic on my jacket so Lavalier GO is ruled out. Thanks :)
The Lav mic will always give you a better sounds as it can be placed up close to the voice within 20 cm. The Video Mic ME-L sounds quite good but as soon as it is further than 50cm to 1m away you start to get a lot of room noise and echo.
Almost got the SmartLav. Ty for the review. The Go sounds way better to me. Maybe less range, but less tinny. I notice a subtle, weird, tinny, mid-high reflection on the smartav.
You're most welcome. Keep in mind the differences in the connection, the Lav Go is TRS and Smart Lav TRRS for connecting to iphone. So if using the Lav Go with the wireless Go or any camera all good, if you want to also use it with an iphone you can get the Rode SC4 adaptor....👍

Hm... the Go sounds a bit muffled to me while the SmartLav+ seems to boost higher frequencies, resulting in stronger hissing sounds and an overall slightly tinnier sound. So... since I plan on using it for video conferencing and thus won't do any processing, it's still a tough decision for me. But thanks a lot for the comparison!
You're welcome, yes its a tough call as they are quite close, but you are right about the higher end frequencies in the SmartLav + so it comes down to personal preference there.....
Basically, the GO and SMARTLAV+ are the same ones, except for the connector (4 PIN vs. 3 PIN // TRRS vs. TRS), or? On Rode's website, they only mention that the Smartlav+ has a "JFET" electronics design...
I wonder the same. And wonder which has the longer cord? And even if minor, wonder which of the mics are smaller (guessing Wireless Go Lav would be a few mm smaller with a shorter cord). Can anyone confirm?
Just ordered rode wirelessgo 2 and have smartlav+ with rc3 cable so I'll have to try this. Also own zoomh5 and use shotgun capsule but outdoors I'll use smartlav+ with wireless go2 and use 2nd transmitter to zoom h5 to capture nature sounds. No more 3.5 mm out zoom h5 into canon g30. Now I dont have to mount stupid weight of h5 and can use tiny light rode go2 and end up with 2 channels into camcorder..... the weight off the camcorder is going to be nice portable
to me the treated section you added at the end (before the H6) had the best sound of all the sections- this was much more to do with the room reverb being less noticeable rather than EQ- any idea why that would be?
As I recorded all these samples in the same room. It probably has something to do with the position of the mic. It's a matter of positioning the mic closer to the voice to remove echo, but if it is too close it can then sound a little muddy.
Thanks for the review. I love my wireless go for making videos, but I find the weight of it makes it flop around on my collar and I won't always notice it and I end up with muffled audio because the mic ends up against my chest.
Yes I know exactly what you mean. It's fine if you wear a vest or jacket but not great with all clothing. You can get the lav Go lapel mic to add to it which is much more subtle and light weight.
Overall a good review. However It would be better if it was edited and shortened. Also cutting back and forth between microphones without a gap as you remove and plugin a new mic (2:34) (by editing in post) would have been more helpful. The same with comparing the audio quality between the different zoom recorders. One final idea - I would love to hear the difference between the cheaper Rode GO wireless system with lav attached vs the pricier RodeLink Film Maker Wireless kit, to evaluate the quality difference and see if it's worth the higher price. Sorry to be dumb, but I just bought a Wireless Go and a SmartLav+ as a bundle, presuming they work together, but I'm getting nothing at all when I plug the mic into the wireless Go. Are you saying the Smarlav+ is not compatible with the Wireless Go but only with laptops and phones? I'm really confused.
The Smart lav plus is designed for phones and computers with a TRRS input (3 bands on the 3.5 connection) The Rode wireless Go has a TRS connection (2 bands on the 3.5 input) So all you need is a TRRS to TRS adaptor cable. Rode sell one, it is called the SC3 patch cable. Costs around $15.
I think the GO sounds more clear and just a tad better than the Smartlav, should fit better for my purposes (motorcycle recording). Good video, thanks :)
Yes you can, you just need a couple of adaptors. You'll need the Rode SC7 adaptor or equivalent which is TRS(Rode end) to TRRS(Apple End). This can then plugin into the Apple 3.5 (TRRS) to lightning port. Great, Glad you like the video. Cheers!

Yeah the Rode Lav Go is a good choice as it has the standard 3.5 TRS connection which is most likely what a wireless receiver would have . The Smart Lav + has the 3.5 TRRS so it works with smartphones and many computers.

@@brucechung_ Yes, there are three levels of gain on the receiver unit. There is a db button that lets you adjust the level. Tap the db button until you get the correct levels.
Great, no nonsense comparison. I actually thought the Lav Go sounded better for video, but have ended up with a Smartlav+ by mistake! Just wondering if you have any suggestions about third party adapters that work the same as the Rode ones but for a lot cheaper? I think companies do take the Mickey a bit charging 4/5 times as much for a branded cable which is probably the same as unbranded. Great thanks for watching. As far as the adapter goes you are right any third party one will mostly likely works just fine. So if wan to put the smart lav plus into a Rode wireless go the 3.5mm TRS male to TRRS female sounds right to me. Regarding the splitter cable, I guess that would be a bonus. I haven't tested such a cable but if the description says it allows you to plugin in headphones then it should work. Might be useful if you are live streaming on a computer or if you want to monitor your audio as you record.

I am such a control freak with my equipment and those plastic stickers lasted for many months at o me use and in the field. 😂 But now nearly one year later I did end up removing them as they started to bubble as they always do. 😔
Really they are quite similar. The SmartLav + has the TRRS connectivity for iPhone and the Lavalier GO has TRS for connecting to the wirless go or directly into a DSLR or mirrorless camera for example. Even though all the new iphones do not have a 3.5 TRRS input anymore the SmartLav + will connect with the lightning to 3.5 audio adapter which you can get from Apple for around $15. If you wanted to use the Lavalier Go with an iphone you would need both the lightning to 3.5 adaptor and also the Rode SC3 TRS to TRRS patch cable.

You can use the Rode Lave go on any device with a 3.5 TRS audio input. When it comes to a computer it depends on which computer. If it is a Mac or something like a Surface Pro etc they tend to sue the TTRS connection(3bands) So you may need an adapter to get the Rode Lav GO to work on a computer with such a TTRS connection. It would be a female TRS to Male TTRS adapter. The Rode Smart Lav + has a TRRS connection so it would work on these computers as is.
You can just use the voice memos app that comes with the iPhone. However Rode provide one for free called the Rode Reporter App. What I like about this app is that you can adjust the audio input level!
Hey, what makes the quality of the audio? is it the microphone or wireless transmitter set? I have a very cheap wireless set and need use a headset mic but the quality isn't great. Can I just buy a better headset mic and plug it directly into the transmitter?
It's probably a combo of both. Usually if the transmitter and receiver is of a decent quality and can deliver a clean sound then it is up to the microphone. I would say the microphone is of the most importance though but if the wireless transmitter and the pre-amps on the camera that you are connecting to are poor they will let you down. So let me know what the exact hardware set up is if you like and I'll give you my thoughts....

Very inspiring to see everyone adapting and bringing value to those around them. Fitness is so important in our lives and we can't let that go! I As far as the microphone and wireless kit you have, those specs look pretty decent. I heard some interference at the beginning from the wireless transmitter but seems like that cleared up. If that persists you can change frequency until you get the best result. I think the levels were too high on the transmitter or receiver. There is probably a gain button on one or both of the units. On the rode wireless go it's a single button with three levels, I use the mid level. If you have the gain up to high it can distort which I could hear in your recording at times. Then in the Zoom audio software set up that should be dialed up to around 80% not much louder. If you find that the signal is cleaner then that may do the trick. If not could be time to consider something like the Rode Wireless Go broadcast grade kit to see if that gives you better results. However from what I heard with a few tweaks you might get the current gear to sound pretty good.

Dam I'm getting so much noise with my lavalier go and wireless go. seems to be the case no matter what I do. I've plugged it the wireless go transmitter in my apollo twin interface with a 1/8 to XLR recording into logic pro x, I've recorded into a my zoom h5 with the same cable and also with a 1/8 to 1/8 cable and that one actually gives me the most noise. Any suggestions?
Should not be that noisy at all. Since you have a H5 try the following test. Rather than use the XLR adapter try plugging the Rode wireless go receiver into the H5 by the 3.5 input that is on the XY capsule. You have to go into the settings to enable plugin power to get the 3.5 input to work. Set the level on the H5 to around 4-5, no more than that. On the rode wireless go receiver unit set the level to -12 DB using the DB button. Let me know if that reduced the noise.
In my opinion it's just opposite of what you said. For me the SmartLav+ sounds identical with the Wireless Go. And the Lavalier Go sounds super bass heavy. So I prefer the SmartLav + and the Wireless Go's audio. ...also the effects applied at the end to the Lavalier Go... it sounds unpleasingly phasy. :/ Might've been the reverb reducer. But besides these personal preferences it is a great video! Thanks!
Thanks for your feedback. Yeah I am trying to go a bit lighter on the reverb reduction these days. It's a balancing act between removing the annoying reverb and maintaining a natural sound.
Ok so I just received my Lavalier Go (and I never used a microphone before). First mistake, it won't work with my phone (so I ordered the adaptor for that). What else should I consider (when I'm making vlogging videos) to make it work with my phone? I'm quite new to all of this.
Yeah that Lav go needs the TRS to TRRS adapter. Then you need a lighting to 3.5 adaptor also. For iphone you can get the smart lav plus instead but since you have the Lav GO the adapters shoud do the trick. Other than that it should just work no matter what app you use.
Cheers, Thanks! In terms of audio quality, I don't believe the wireless Go is any better than the iPhone. The Rode reporter app records in 48Khz 24 bit wav which is comparable to the wireless go. The pre-amps are different so they don't quite sound the same, but one isn't better than the other as such. The advantage of the Wireless go is that you can record into your camera so you don't have to sync up in post.

That hadn't crossed my mind. I generally use the lav because it is more discreet and depends on what people are wearing if we can get away with the larger transmitter unit. However that is a good point perhaps for those using it over extended periods of time, having a wireless device up so close isn't ideal for health reasons.
The preamp on this recording would have been set to around -6db as I didn't want to EQ it in post to keep it as close to the original as possible for the test. So normally and certainly lately I have been using a lower input of around -12db and this produces a cleaner sound all round.
Why does my smartlav+ sound so badly compared to yours? It goes into my iphone. Its a stepup from the internal but it doesnt sound anything like this vid
Part of it is definitely the preamp. Note that recording to a smartphone or even to many DSLRs (older DSLRs have notoriously bad preamps) will not be as good as recording to a zoom h1n or a camera with a higher quality preamp

Yeah I know. I always hated that about doing client work. Somehow things end up getting damaged. I like the Lav GO and think it sounds great. Not sure about the Deity as I haven't tested but I have heard mostly good things about it.
What about the connectors? One has the screw one doesn't. Does that impact how each of the connect into the devices? Does one of them 'fall out' more often than the other?
Actually. they both have the same 3.5mm cable type that is not screwed in. Just plugs in. No issue with it slipping off unless it is pulled on with a fair bit of pressure.
Yes you can use the SmartLav + with your smartphone. Just plug it in to the audio input jack. If you have a recent iPhone or Android that does not have an audio jack you may also need to get a lightning to 3.5 audio adaptor or USB-C to 3.5 cable.
there was a lot of static noise when using the wireless mode. But no static with direct cable connection to the recorders. How do you remove static noise when using it live?
Nice video, though the "filtered audio" you can hear a lot of distortion with some of the plugins you're using... most likely the "denoiser" or some kind of noise reduction tool but could be the reverb removal plugin you were talking about which adds a bit of distorted sound into the track... I prefer the clean sound with a bit of bass as there wasn't too much noise from the non filtered takes. Nice comparison though.
@@MADagain Yeah tell me about it. When I do client work my gear often cops a beating. One dropped my Zoom H4n on the head and it now has a buckled xy microphone. Good excuse for me to have upgraded to the H6, great recorder!

I have the RODE Go Lav plugged into that line in plug on the H6 as you do. My Zoom is connected to my iPhone 11ProMax. Am wanting to use the Lav instead of the mic on the Zoom. What settings need to be adjusted in the Zoom menu for that to work? Currently, I'm using the ZOOM, connected to my iPhone tor record audio when shooting in FilmicPro. But, I want to add the lav. Thanks for checking out the video. So it sounds like you are using the Zoom H6 to pass through audio via the output of the H6 into the iphone? Is that right? If so I think I know what you are looking to do. Go into the Zoom settings the second menu icon on the left is input/output scroll down to Plugin Power and turn this on. Now insert the lapel mic into the 3.5 jack in the XY microphone capsule on the side and it should now work? Let me know how it goes.
I use the -6DB gain which is the second option from default. So it starts with 0DB gain which I find too loud as it peaks with my voice, quite load. -6DB is perfect, -12 too low...
Can the Zoom H1 be connected to an iPhone to use as an interface, with an additional external mic such as the ones in this video plugged into the iPhone or the Zoom H1? Would editing be needed to sync the audio with the video, or would it be completely synced at playback, without having to edit?
Yes you can connect the zoom H1 to an iPhone using the lightning to USB camera adapter. It's a cable that plugins in to the lightning port of your iPhone and has a usb connection on the other end. You then plug the zoom H1 into the usb connection. Then your audio app or the video app will recognise the zoom as the audio input. I haven't tested with the zoom H1 but have done it using the zoom H6 and used the internal mic of the zoom H6 and also plugged in microphones into the XLR inputs and the iPhone recognises them. So I assume that the Zoom H1 would do the same.
Most people say they are the same capsule, with different fitting. I found there was a subtle difference. I could be hearing things though. Either way both sound pretty good!
Hard to say. I don't think there is enough of a difference to matter. The smart Lav + will be easier if you have an iphone with lightning port but the audio should sound about the same in that type of environment.
Does anybody know if you can use this without the app? I read that there is an app that you can use to edit the audio, but I just want to record my podcast directly on Anchor and not have to hassle with another app.
Yeah in that final test where I plugged it into the XLR jack I had left phantom power on but it doesn't make any difference, as you point out you certainly don't need phantom power for a lapel mic.

You're welcome. Yes, you need the Rode SC3 adapter.The Rode SC3 is a premium shielded TRRS mini-jack to TRS mini-jack adapter cable. Ideal for connecting the SmartLAV or SmartLAV+ into the standard 3.5 mm input on cameras and audio recorders.
The Rode Lav Go is a 3.5 cable lav mic so it can be plugged into the wireless go or any device or audio recorder with a 3.5 input. If you want to use it with a phone you have to check if the phone has TRS 3.5 or TRRS 3.5. If it is TRRS like on an iPhone you have to get a 3.5.TRS to 3.5 TRRS adapter along with a lightning to 3.5 adapter cable.
Hi there. No it's not compatible with the bluetooth of any camera. The latest GoPro Hero7 and 8 have an external 3.5 audio attachment you can purchase. You can then plugin the receiver into the GO Pro via the 3.5 cable and use the Rode Transmitter and Receiver that way. Otherwise I would suggest using an external audio source, could be as simple as the Rode Reporter app on your mobile phone or a dedicated audio recorder like a Zoom H1. However you then need to sync the audio in post.

It would be nice if you did a 1 2 3 with the same phrase like “testing 123 this is how it sounds” on the go and then direct cut to the lav+ followed by a direct cut to the wireless so we can hear them side-by-side.

They do sound pretty close, some have suggested they are the same microphone only with a different connection, yet to me there is a subtle difference. I feel the noise levels are similar but the bass on the SmartLav + might be a bit more present. Again very close indeed.

I don't know if my hearing has diminished with age but I found it very hard to notice any difference between the three. And they all sounded great. Oh, and a BIG thumbs up.

The Smartlav+ is definitely is best sound. I don't use wireless, I'm using Tascam DR10's instead of wireless. The decision wasn't due to the sound quality as much as it was about buying products with built-in batteries.
No one seems to want to comment on the durability of these lavs. Most lav's over the £50 price point tend to sound decent and believe it or not the greatest difference between a £50 lav mic and a £500 lav mic isn't the sound quality. A pro lav mic will usually be smaller and easier to conceal. It will also be 'repairable' so a broken cable isn't the end of the road. Also the cable is usually kevlar reinforced or steel meaning more durable but also easier to rig because it doesn't devolve into a scraggy mess as soon as it's unpacked and take a lifetime to untangle. So when I see a comparison that compares sound quality only and doesn't take into account these other incredibly important characteristics/features I'm left feeling underwhelmed. And in answer to some of the comments below commenting on the audio 'quality' when really they're commenting on the tone, just because a mic has more base or treble in it's tone does not mean it is better or worse 'quality'. It's like saying which one of these spanners is best the and judging them based on size.

To me the GO sounds flatter and truer. The Lav+ sounds richer with more midbass and lower end. So does that make the Lav+ better? Not necessarily. It all depends on what you want. Everything can be modified in post, but you may not want to bother with that. I find most consumers like a little more "color" in their sound as opposed to something that is flat. So with that said, the Lav+ would be a better choice. Though if you go with the GO mic, you can always EQ it if you want, but requires that extra step.
I agree with that. Really it is going to be a subjective thing and you are right ultimately you can EQ both mics to get the sound you want.....

Yes you can, the Rode Lav Go has a 3.5 TRS connection that works with most cameras that have a 3.5 audio input. Although I haven't tested on the M50 I have done it on my Canon EOS R which has the 3.5 mic input and it works just fine.

Great, thanks for checking out the video. Yeah Final Cut Pro has all the features you need to master your audio. So If you are editing with FCP it makes sense just to use that. You can use dedicated audio programs like Logic for even more advanced audio editing but I don't think you need to as Final Cut Pro has everything you need. Basically you would just need to apply some light noise reduction, a compressor, some EQ and and possibly a limiter and you are there.

What is your preference? Smart Lav + is little more bass in my hearing so it should be better depending on case. In terms of TRS-TRRS adapter for Smart Lav+, do you think it makes little noise due to the adapter especially moving environment like gimbal shoot(connector may be rotated or contacted while fast movement).
Both very close but yeah I do like the Smart Lav + the adapter doesn't introduce any additional line noise at least that I can notice. But you might have a point about risk or disconnection if you are in a fast moving situation. However it certainly is quite solid and I haven't had any issues for general walking around scenes etc.
Which one would you recommend for recording lectures on ipad where noise cancellation is the the most important factor (as the room I would be recording in isn't acoustically treated) and I would want to avoid undergoing the hassle of using a powered usb hub and a lightning to OTG adapter for a USB microphone. Would a lapel mic cancel surrounding noise. If yes, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Just got and have been testing the Rode WG2.......occasionally getting an audio surge that shows up on the TX internal recording as well as on my EOSR....haven't been able to figure out what that is from yet.
What settings have you found work best as far as in the EOSR manual audio settings with the RWG2? I am currently experimenting with various levels on the mic and camera.
I am not sure what could be causing an audio surge. It sounds strange could be interference of some kind or a fault with the unit if it happens too often, I would check that. As for the settings I go into manual mode on the EOSR and have it quite low at about -12 to -24 db. I set the Rode to around -12DB(Middle one) and there is very little line noise with these settings. Best to use headphones as you check and you can hear it in real time.
Which one do you recommend for H1N? Smartlav+ sounds better to me, but I dont want to go around with an SC3 adaptor. is it worth it?

Thanks for checking out the video, glad you liked it. I believe the Huawei P30 Pro has a usb type C port. So you would need to get an adaptor for usb c type 3 to 3.5 audio (TRRS) I haven't tested so can't be sure.

I think the quality in the wireless Go is much the same really. So I would only get the Lav Go or Smart Lav+ with the SC3 adaptor in order to hide the mic better.
Wait a second. When you unplugged the first lavalier to switch to the second one, your audio AUTOMATICALLY switched to the Wireless Go device.

Yeah that's right. The smart lav is designed for mobile phones using the TRRS connection with 3 rings. The Rode Go has TRS.
Have you had issues with the SmartLav+ and static from the 3.5mm plug on it? I have one and I have a lot of issues with it making noise off and on based on the flexing of the plug. I noticed on your recording of yours in the video I could hear a little static off and on as your were using it. But that might be the wireless Go making the noise.
Not much at all that I have ever noticed. However it can appear occasionally on any lav mic usually depends on where I position the mic or the transmitter an if they have any contact with clothing etc as I am moving. So really there should not be excessive static at all using the Smart Lav plus, not more than any other mic I have tested.
@@Touchtechnologyreview Thanks. I actually just got a new one in the mail today and I tried it on my zoom and it works great with no static. I'm pretty sure there is a loose connection in the 3.5mm plug of my other mic that is causing it.

Not a ware thing either. I submitted a request for repair to Rode last night. We will see if they replace it or not.

The Lav mic will always give you a better sounds as it can be placed up close to the voice within 20 cm. The Video Mic ME-L sounds quite good but as soon as it is further than 50cm to 1m away you start to get a lot of room noise and echo.
Almost got the SmartLav. Ty for the review. The Go sounds way better to me. Maybe less range, but less tinny. I notice a subtle, weird, tinny, mid-high reflection on the smartav.
You're most welcome. Keep in mind the differences in the connection, the Lav Go is TRS and Smart Lav TRRS for connecting to iphone. So if using the Lav Go with the wireless Go or any camera all good, if you want to also use it with an iphone you can get the Rode SC4 adaptor....👍

Hm... the Go sounds a bit muffled to me while the SmartLav+ seems to boost higher frequencies, resulting in stronger hissing sounds and an overall slightly tinnier sound.
So... since I plan on using it for video conferencing and thus won't do any processing, it's still a tough decision for me.

You're welcome, yes its a tough call as they are quite close, but you are right about the higher end frequencies in the SmartLav + so it comes down to personal preference there.....

Just ordered rode wirelessgo 2 and have smartlav+ with rc3 cable so I'll have to try this. Also own zoomh5 and use shotgun capsule but outdoors I'll use smartlav+ with wireless go2 and use 2nd transmitter to zoom h5 to capture nature sounds. No more 3.5 mm out zoom h5 into canon g30. Now I dont have to mount stupid weight of h5 and can use tiny light rode go2 and end up with 2 channels into camcorder..... the weight off the camcorder is going to be nice portable
Maybe my old ears have been dulled by too much loud music, but I can't really tell a difference. Good no-nonsense presentation.
The difference is really quite minor so either one is a good option and by the time you EQ the audio even less to seperate them.
to me the treated section you added at the end (before the H6) had the best sound of all the sections- this was much more to do with the room reverb being less noticeable rather than EQ- any idea why that would be?
As I recorded all these samples in the same room. It probably has something to do with the position of the mic. It's a matter of positioning the mic closer to the voice to remove echo, but if it is too close it can then sound a little muddy.
Thanks for the review. I love my wireless go for making videos, but I find the weight of it makes it flop around on my collar and I won't always notice it and I end up with muffled audio because the mic ends up against my chest.
Yes I know exactly what you mean. It's fine if you wear a vest or jacket but not great with all clothing. You can get the lav Go lapel mic to add to it which is much more subtle and light weight.

Overall a good review. However It would be better if it was edited and shortened. Also cutting back and forth between microphones without a gap as you remove and plugin a new mic (2:34) (by editing in post) would have been more helpful. The same with comparing the audio quality between the different zoom recorders. One final idea - I would love to hear the difference between the cheaper Rode GO wireless system with lav attached vs the pricier RodeLink Film Maker Wireless kit, to evaluate the quality difference and see if it's worth the higher price.

Sorry to be dumb, but I just bought a Wireless Go and a SmartLav+ as a bundle, presuming they work together, but I'm getting nothing at all when I plug the mic into the wireless Go. Are you saying the Smarlav+ is not compatible with the Wireless Go but only with laptops and phones? I'm really confused.
The Smart lav plus is designed for phones and computers with a TRRS input (3 bands on the 3.5 connection) The Rode wireless Go has a TRS connection (2 bands on the 3.5 input) So all you need is a TRRS to TRS adaptor cable. Rode sell one, it is called the SC3 patch cable. Costs around $15.
I think the GO sounds more clear and just a tad better than the Smartlav, should fit better for my purposes (motorcycle recording). Good video, thanks :)

Yeah the Rode Lav Go is a good choice as it has the standard 3.5 TRS connection which is most likely what a wireless receiver would have . The Smart Lav + has the 3.5 TRRS so it works with smartphones and many computers.

Great, no nonsense comparison. I actually thought the Lav Go sounded better for video, but have ended up with a Smartlav+ by mistake! Just wondering if you have any suggestions about third party adapters that work the same as the Rode ones but for a lot cheaper? I think companies do take the Mickey a bit charging 4/5 times as much for a branded cable which is probably the same as unbranded. Not sure if either of these would work for £2.99 a pop...

Great thanks for watching. As far as the adapter goes you are right any third party one will mostly likely works just fine. So if wan to put the smart lav plus into a Rode wireless go the 3.5mm TRS male to TRRS female sounds right to me. Regarding the splitter cable, I guess that would be a bonus. I haven't tested such a cable but if the description says it allows you to plugin in headphones then it should work. Might be useful if you are live streaming on a computer or if you want to monitor your audio as you record.

I am such a control freak with my equipment and those plastic stickers lasted for many months at o me use and in the field. 😂 But now nearly one year later I did end up removing them as they started to bubble as they always do. 😔

Really they are quite similar. The SmartLav + has the TRRS connectivity for iPhone and the Lavalier GO has TRS for connecting to the wirless go or directly into a DSLR or mirrorless camera for example. Even though all the new iphones do not have a 3.5 TRRS input anymore the SmartLav + will connect with the lightning to 3.5 audio adapter which you can get from Apple for around $15. If you wanted to use the Lavalier Go with an iphone you would need both the lightning to 3.5 adaptor and also the Rode SC3 TRS to TRRS patch cable.

You can use the Rode Lave go on any device with a 3.5 TRS audio input. When it comes to a computer it depends on which computer. If it is a Mac or something like a Surface Pro etc they tend to sue the TTRS connection(3bands) So you may need an adapter to get the Rode Lav GO to work on a computer with such a TTRS connection. It would be a female TRS to Male TTRS adapter. The Rode Smart Lav + has a TRRS connection so it would work on these computers as is.

You can just use the voice memos app that comes with the iPhone. However Rode provide one for free called the Rode Reporter App. What I like about this app is that you can adjust the audio input level!
Hey, what makes the quality of the audio? is it the microphone or wireless transmitter set? I have a very cheap wireless set and need use a headset mic but the quality isn't great. Can I just buy a better headset mic and plug it directly into the transmitter?
It's probably a combo of both. Usually if the transmitter and receiver is of a decent quality and can deliver a clean sound then it is up to the microphone. I would say the microphone is of the most importance though but if the wireless transmitter and the pre-amps on the camera that you are connecting to are poor they will let you down. So let me know what the exact hardware set up is if you like and I'll give you my thoughts....

Very inspiring to see everyone adapting and bringing value to those around them. Fitness is so important in our lives and we can't let that go! I As far as the microphone and wireless kit you have, those specs look pretty decent. I heard some interference at the beginning from the wireless transmitter but seems like that cleared up. If that persists you can change frequency until you get the best result. I think the levels were too high on the transmitter or receiver. There is probably a gain button on one or both of the units. On the rode wireless go it's a single button with three levels, I use the mid level. If you have the gain up to high it can distort which I could hear in your recording at times. Then in the Zoom audio software set up that should be dialed up to around 80% not much louder. If you find that the signal is cleaner then that may do the trick. If not could be time to consider something like the Rode Wireless Go broadcast grade kit to see if that gives you better results. However from what I heard with a few tweaks you might get the current gear to sound pretty good.

What is the sound or the beats at the end of the video?
Dam I'm getting so much noise with my lavalier go and wireless go. seems to be the case no matter what I do. I've plugged it the wireless go transmitter in my apollo twin interface with a 1/8 to XLR recording into logic pro x, I've recorded into a my zoom h5 with the same cable and also with a 1/8 to 1/8 cable and that one actually gives me the most noise. Any suggestions?
Should not be that noisy at all. Since you have a H5 try the following test. Rather than use the XLR adapter try plugging the Rode wireless go receiver into the H5 by the 3.5 input that is on the XY capsule. You have to go into the settings to enable plugin power to get the 3.5 input to work. Set the level on the H5 to around 4-5, no more than that. On the rode wireless go receiver unit set the level to -12 DB using the DB button. Let me know if that reduced the noise.

In my opinion it's just opposite of what you said. For me the SmartLav+ sounds identical with the Wireless Go. And the Lavalier Go sounds super bass heavy.
So I prefer the SmartLav + and the Wireless Go's audio. ...also the effects applied at the end to the Lavalier Go... it sounds unpleasingly phasy. :/ Might've been the reverb reducer.

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah I am trying to go a bit lighter on the reverb reduction these days. It's a balancing act between removing the annoying reverb and maintaining a natural sound.

Ok so I just received my Lavalier Go (and I never used a microphone before). First mistake, it won't work with my phone (so I ordered the adaptor for that). What else should I consider (when I'm making vlogging videos) to make it work with my phone? I'm quite new to all of this.
Yeah that Lav go needs the TRS to TRRS adapter. Then you need a lighting to 3.5 adaptor also. For iphone you can get the smart lav plus instead but since you have the Lav GO the adapters shoud do the trick. Other than that it should just work no matter what app you use.

Cheers, Thanks! In terms of audio quality, I don't believe the wireless Go is any better than the iPhone. The Rode reporter app records in 48Khz 24 bit wav which is comparable to the wireless go. The pre-amps are different so they don't quite sound the same, but one isn't better than the other as such. The advantage of the Wireless go is that you can record into your camera so you don't have to sync up in post.

Do you use Lav cuz Wireless Go could damage thyroid?
That hadn't crossed my mind. I generally use the lav because it is more discreet and depends on what people are wearing if we can get away with the larger transmitter unit. However that is a good point perhaps for those using it over extended periods of time, having a wireless device up so close isn't ideal for health reasons.
If I got a smartLav+, could I plug it directly into a macbook pro and record?
Yes you can. I have tested it with my Macbook Pro and iMac and it works well.

Is the nasty peaking at 4:00 typical for the mic or was the pre-amp turned up too much?
The preamp on this recording would have been set to around -6db as I didn't want to EQ it in post to keep it as close to the original as possible for the test. So normally and certainly lately I have been using a lower input of around -12db and this produces a cleaner sound all round.

Why does my smartlav+ sound so badly compared to yours? It goes into my iphone. Its a stepup from the internal but it doesnt sound anything like this vid

Part of it is definitely the preamp. Note that recording to a smartphone or even to many DSLRs (older DSLRs have notoriously bad preamps) will not be as good as recording to a zoom h1n or a camera with a higher quality preamp
Yes on my iPhone SE the Røde iOs app produces MUCH better sound than the internal “Voice Memo” app

Yeah I know. I always hated that about doing client work. Somehow things end up getting damaged. I like the Lav GO and think it sounds great. Not sure about the Deity as I haven't tested but I have heard mostly good things about it.

What about the connectors? One has the screw one doesn't. Does that impact how each of the connect into the devices? Does one of them 'fall out' more often than the other?
Actually. they both have the same 3.5mm cable type that is not screwed in. Just plugs in. No issue with it slipping off unless it is pulled on with a fair bit of pressure.
Hello! This might seem like a dumb question but can you plug it into a mobile phone and just record from there?
Yes you can use the SmartLav + with your smartphone. Just plug it in to the audio input jack. If you have a recent iPhone or Android that does not have an audio jack you may also need to get a lightning to 3.5 audio adaptor or USB-C to 3.5 cable.

A beginner's question: When you record your audio into a Zoom device do you sync in post with the video?
Yes, it is pretty easy if you have Premiere Pro or Da Vinci Resolve for example as they have a sync audio feature that makes it really easy to do.
there was a lot of static noise when using the wireless mode. But no static with direct cable connection to the recorders. How do you remove static noise when using it live?
There may be some static using the wireless go but for me it is not that noticeable.... What are you plugging the receiver into?
Nice video, though the "filtered audio" you can hear a lot of distortion with some of the plugins you're using... most likely the "denoiser" or some kind of noise reduction tool but could be the reverb removal plugin you were talking about which adds a bit of distorted sound into the track... I prefer the clean sound with a bit of bass as there wasn't too much noise from the non filtered takes. Nice comparison though.

@@MADagain Yeah tell me about it. When I do client work my gear often cops a beating. One dropped my Zoom H4n on the head and it now has a buckled xy microphone. Good excuse for me to have upgraded to the H6, great recorder!
I appreciate the vid! Thank you. Curious about the H6 Zoom with lav hook up. I'm attempting to do the same but can't quite figure out the settings. I have the RODE Go Lav plugged into that line in plug on the H6 as you do. My Zoom is connected to my iPhone 11ProMax. Am wanting to use the Lav instead of the mic on the Zoom. What settings need to be adjusted in the Zoom menu for that to work? Currently, I'm using the ZOOM, connected to my iPhone tor record audio when shooting in FilmicPro. But, I want to add the lav. Thanks for checking out the video. So it sounds like you are using the Zoom H6 to pass through audio via the output of the H6 into the iphone? Is that right? If so I think I know what you are looking to do. Go into the Zoom settings the second menu icon on the left is input/output scroll down to Plugin Power and turn this on. Now insert the lapel mic into the 3.5 jack in the XY microphone capsule on the side and it should now work? Let me know how it goes.

I would like to know which gain-settings you used on the receiver for the test?
I use the -6DB gain which is the second option from default. So it starts with 0DB gain which I find too loud as it peaks with my voice, quite load. -6DB is perfect, -12 too low...
Can the Zoom H1 be connected to an iPhone to use as an interface, with an additional external mic such as the ones in this video plugged into the iPhone or the Zoom H1? Would editing be needed to sync the audio with the video, or would it be completely synced at playback, without having to edit?
Yes you can connect the zoom H1 to an iPhone using the lightning to USB camera adapter. It's a cable that plugins in to the lightning port of your iPhone and has a usb connection on the other end. You then plug the zoom H1 into the usb connection. Then your audio app or the video app will recognise the zoom as the audio input. I haven't tested with the zoom H1 but have done it using the zoom H6 and used the internal mic of the zoom H6 and also plugged in microphones into the XLR inputs and the iPhone recognises them. So I assume that the Zoom H1 would do the same.
There is no difference, is there? I guess both are pretty the same mics having different cables/connectors..
Most people say they are the same capsule, with different fitting. I found there was a subtle difference. I could be hearing things though. Either way both sound pretty good!

Hard to say. I don't think there is enough of a difference to matter. The smart Lav + will be easier if you have an iphone with lightning port but the audio should sound about the same in that type of environment.

Does anybody know if you can use this without the app? I read that there is an app that you can use to edit the audio, but I just want to record my podcast directly on Anchor and not have to hassle with another app.
Yes no problem it should work with any app including Anchor.
Why are you using phantom power on the Zoom H6 with a lav mic.
Yeah in that final test where I plugged it into the XLR jack I had left phantom power on but it doesn't make any difference, as you point out you certainly don't need phantom power for a lapel mic.

The Rode Lav Go is a 3.5 cable lav mic so it can be plugged into the wireless go or any device or audio recorder with a 3.5 input. If you want to use it with a phone you have to check if the phone has TRS 3.5 or TRRS 3.5. If it is TRRS like on an iPhone you have to get a 3.5.TRS to 3.5 TRRS adapter along with a lightning to 3.5 adapter cable.

Hi there. No it's not compatible with the bluetooth of any camera. The latest GoPro Hero7 and 8 have an external 3.5 audio attachment you can purchase. You can then plugin the receiver into the GO Pro via the 3.5 cable and use the Rode Transmitter and Receiver that way. Otherwise I would suggest using an external audio source, could be as simple as the Rode Reporter app on your mobile phone or a dedicated audio recorder like a Zoom H1. However you then need to sync the audio in post.
