  • These are scenes I took at the lake goldsmith steam rally, focusing on a number of diesel and steam powered shovels used for mining and excavation operations back in the 1920s. Firstly we take a look at some diesel powered shovels working a make shift excavation site, along with an ex Corio shire Bedford tipper truck.

i would love a go on all of these machines. but not for 8 hours a day. fyi, there are films of the old steam shovels digging out the panama canal. some have been colorised which makes them easier to watch. you might enjoy their use of portable rail tracks and in particular, the innovative way they unloaded the rail wagons. also the nsw roads board filmed their road building in the 1920's, where they were still using horses, and the 30's and 40's where bulldozers and modern equipment were used. the roads board and panama canal films are some of my favourite youtube videos.

@@GunzelingGarbo102 , oh yeah! the french started digging out the panama canal by hand and gave up. the yanks moved in and tried to mechanise as much of it as possible. both the panama films as well as the nswrb films show very clever levels of innovation. eg, how does the nswrb load a truck before front end loaders were invented? you build a ramp that the bulldozer pushes dirt up and over the end into the truck below.
