Don’t forget how the Oscars treat documentaries and foreign language productions. Pretty sure the former has yet to even see a single Best Picture nomination.
What sets the Beatles and Elvis apart from other artists is that they had an “artistic breakthrough.” Like at the beginning, they might have been considered heartthrobs that were mainly teen girl things. But then they gathered a larger demographic with their experimental sounds (especially in the case of The Beatles). But don’t assume that BTS will never win a Grammy (assuming you’re alluding to BTS). All BTS has to do is get experimental and turn music into a greater artwork.
@@satine2342 agree. they are actually good artists. but some older people still don't appreciate some modern artists today even though they are artistically great and experimental just because they are fangirl-ed/fanboy-ed by younger generations.
@@satine2342 thanks.actually they are aldready doing it.if you dig deeper you will find many masterpieces like shawdow, blackswan etc.but actually the regular type of songs like dynamite do well in charts while other underrated songs are not talked about.
@@satine2342 BTS concept is so big since It's beging. The entire discography is based on Carl Jung's theories, Hesse's book Demian and the concept of loving ourselves. Also they have songs with genious lyrics such as 'ddaeng' but are difficult for us non koreans to undrstand. I wouldn't like them to be recognized over dynamite a song they didn't even composed and It's in english.
They are relying heavily this year on BTS's fans to pull up attendance records, and then moved the only category that they deigned to give BTS a nomination in (Pop Duo) to the preshow, along with Rap (POC nominees) and R&B (POC nominees) Forbes put out an article last year with a closing line that I think applies to artists like The Weeknd, as well as BTS: "As BTS continues smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?"
Absolutely... I think BTS are a great example of a group for whom winning a Grammy (though good god they should have been in a better category than this) would actually be really meaningful in their career. I want to say the Grammys don't matter, but I think that's in a US context more than an international one. I hope they win, but either way, I'm going to feel like the Grammys nominated them for the Academy's and show's own benefit, not the artistry 🤷
Something I am always bitter about is the neglecting of nominating kpop. People usually diss the genre, but if you are familiarized with kpop you will know that there's some fine music, take BTS, they have really transgressive and defining music, GOOD music, and they've never got nominated till they bent to the system and made a song fully in english. It's a blatant act of gatekeeping and a bit racist.
Maybe the Grammys will create a category for kpop (even tho its pop) in the next decade, since it took a decade for rap to have a category. Basically they're gonna put them on the sidelane just like what they do to POC to stay in the Rap and Rnb categories only but who knows 🤷
@@denomava5470 Absolutely, especially if you consider the whole korean music landscape and not only what we perceive as kpop. And this applies to other countrie's music that is not english as well, they almost never get nominated. Japan has the 2nd biggest music market worldwide but there have only been 6 nominees/winners total?? How does that make sense
I know it's such a shame. As a One Direction fan (don't judge pls) I know all about this. Their music matured so much since they started but they weren't taken seriously due to their massive fan base made up of mostly teenage girls
I think the problem is when they start manufacturing inauthentic, not super talented artists and idols to milk money out of teen girls... most of the newer gen are like that, and it has been for like 30 yrs with the creation of NKOB to basically have a white, more marketable version of New Edition, times are different than say when the Beatles were around. I'm not saying all groups that were basically record company ideas are bad but at times it just seems like what media tells teens to be into seems super shallow and inauthentic. And this is coming from a Jonas Brothers fan from childhood (whom I consider a "real" group because they were around and struggling long before signing with Disney)
As a teenage girl who is going into adulthood in the coming years, I look back and realise how upsetting it is. I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan, but I put it off for so long because I was so concerned about what others would think or say. It's stupid, Swift is an excellent songwriter and extremely talented. Additionally, loving her art does not mean I cannot enjoy other artists such as The Strokes, The Beatles and more (just thinking of my top artists). I was a very insecure young girl. I still am, but I care less. I know that many others do/have done that. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that you can't please everyone and those who judge others music tastes are just idiots. I hope that made sense EDIT: I would like to say - Kandrick should have won that Grammy. Just because I'm a fan of hers doesn't mean i don't recognise that x
Seeing that blurb about the Grammy credo and remembering "Yummy" getting a Grammy nomination for this year... Truly, a record of "sheer artistry, and artistry alone"
@@R3R0R3 Blinding Lights was THE biggest song of 2020, liked by practically everybody from music snubs to causal listeners of the radio. Started with the beatles...when girls used to faint and scream at the sight of them people used to dislike it. Now that its stopped, suddenly people realized that the beatles are amazing. Backstreet boys, 1D, bts....if you are hating on them or dismissing their music just because teenage girls like them then you're wrong for not even giving them a chance. Give it a chance. Its not just a bunch of pretty boys singing. I realized that a little late but I'm glad I did.
Like I’ve said in other replies related to the Beatles, the Beatles gained a wide demographic WHILE they existed. Their “heartthrob” years were in the beginning and they mainly attracted a demographic of teenage girls. But in a few years, after they became more artistic, the Beatles had a wide variety of people listening to them. What sets 1D, Backstreet Boys, and BTS apart is that they never had their artistic era where they attracted a wide variety of people. So that’s technically not true. The Beatles have always had a pretty diverse fanbase.
@@satine2342 i don't know that much about 1D or the backstreet boys (or the beatles, tbh) but as a bts fan, i'd hazard to say that bts's entire career has pretty much been their 'artistic era'. they started out by criticizing the strict schooling system in south korea and gradually transitioned towards explorations of youth and growing up. they then launched the love yourself series which explored different types of love and how hard it can be to accept yourself in the face of it. their map of the soul series has explored jungian psychology and their relationships with fame. most recently their be album was largely about the pandemic and explored feelings of loneliness and unease they expericed. and on top of all of that, they've included songs that critique specific aspects of korean society in almost all of their work. (and various members have been credited on these projects, its not just some production team that dreamed all this up for them. bts have been very involved since the beginning) have they ever been publically acknowledged as being in an 'artistic era' the way they beatles were? no. but that doesn't mean it hasn't been happening. also bts are HUGE worldwide which seems like a pretty diverse fanbase. check where they performed when they toured in 2018/2019. and recently the IFPI named them the best-selling artists worldwide in 2020 with three different albums in the top 10. you can't do all of that with just teenage girls or one specific demographic. my point with this comment isn't to force you to become a bts fan, but just to dispel some of the rumors that have been surrounding their career and that work to discredit their achievements. (although if anyone wants some recommendations i'll gladly drop some ;) if you talk to almost any bts fan who's been around for a second, we'll tell you that one of the main reasons we stick around is for their artistry. they're not just some passing fad of hot men or whatever people want to think.
@@jayyone6137 Agreed. As a former BTS fan myself, one of the reasons BTS had been so big is that they challenges societal norms especially in their home country. When I mention an artist’s “artistic era,” I don’t always mean lyrics or intention. I’m usually talking about musical complexity. The Beatles always used instruments, but later on in their career, they incorporated a band and an orchestra into their works. And BTS hasn’t reached the point where they have enough independence to do that. And some might argue BTS’ music production quality has dropped. On top of that, BTS carries on the same musical trends (trap beats, autotune, etc). But with the Beatles and other artists (like Queen, Radiohead, etc.), they became popular because they made music that was never done before. So I’m not necessarily casting doubt on BTS, they just have to gain independence and try new things :)
@@biggusduckus6489 Never implied anything you accused me of. And when did I say dancing wasn’t a form of art? And why does dancing matter at the GRAMMYS? Listen, it isn’t just BTS who lacks the right amount of recognition. So many other artists face that. You’re also speaking to a proud Beyhive member. She has been in the industry for over 20 YEARS. And she takes huge initiative in writing and singing. While Beyoncé isn’t a Jack of all trades kinda musician, her most powerful instrument is her voice. She has the ability to take older styles and genres and mix them in with more modern ones to create unique sounding music. Like the Beatles, Beyoncé is one of the main pioneers for the “visual album,” which is an album with a music video for every track. She puts emphasis on the “ALBUM,” Not singles. Dancing is also one of her strong suits. If you watch any of her documentaries, she is a total boss and a perfectionist. To me, she’s the most hard-working woman in the music industry. Remember that when she was young, people didn’t take her seriously either (especially as a black woman). But she gained experience and worked hard.
I understand where you’re coming from with this comment but I think you’re being a bit hostile here. Mic isn’t saying that the academy’s idea of what makes good music is a valid one (as he explains later on). He’s just saying that’s what it is and that the perception of BTS is that their fan base is predominantly teenage girls. If you’ve watched his other vids he does respect BTS and has said that while it’s not for him their craftsmanship is stellar. I get the defensiveness but I think you’re missing the point a bit
I kinda wish we had the grammys every year... but with no awards. Like a night with the biggest music celebrities and some super stellar epic performances. A celebration of music. And that's it. Maybe like a good worthy charity fundraiser. Like the met gala but for music instead of fashion. All the awards do is piss people of and celebrate the establishment.
That would be so fun, imagine the artists are allowed to just get someone from the crowd to go on stage with them, and Beyoncé starts singing because... One Republic asked her to or something lol

As a woman these statements rub me the wrong way. It's like you want women and girls to be coddled. They are able to stand on their own two feet. Teen boys are able to easily brush off girls and women calling things like wrestling and call of duty stupid and meaningless, why do we expect girls and women to be so emotional, why do we perpetuate the stereotypes we claim to be breaking down? As a Latina artist, Rosalia is a Spaniard (European) not Latina - but to the American academy it means the same thing cause WOOO, even at those levels we have ~colorism & preference for whiteness~
Rosalia is not "Latina" but she is Latin as she is from Latin Europe. The Grammys has many issues but when they say Latin I've always thought that they were talking about the music made, not the artist. So for instance, an Asian person who records a Latin album could win a Latin music award. Am I wrong?
I'm a bts fan and it's heavily known in the fandom that bts is used for views and ratings. Grammys already has problems as this video points out, don't get me started on asian representation and the latin grammy awards. But as a bts fan and a historian, bts won't win the award bc the grammys have never given an award to boybands the case seen with backstreet boys. Mots7 deserved a nom, not dynamite.
For real. MOTS:7 felt almost like a magnum opus, something that captured so much of BTS' determination, fear and hope in just one album, and On is one of their strongest title tracks to date. They clearly put so much effort into the album and the Grammys just ignored it completely to go for the happy song entirely in English. I'm not saying MOTS:7 is their best work (though it's definitely one of my favourites), but it was an album that deserved rewarding for all it managed to convey. I would've been happy with BE as well, because we got so many amazing songs from that one too, as well as an exploration of BTS' feelings on quarantine and COVID-19 and their attempts to stay happy and hopeful in such dark times but because they're a pop boy band made up with people of colour, with only one member that speaks English fluently, they're likely never going to recognised, no matter how experimental and thought-provoking they get. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone who enjoys Dynamite but it's not one of their stronger songs in my opinion and the sole reason it even got a nomination was because it was in English.
@Winifred Eghrudje idk, on one hand i agree with you, but on the other, bts have said multiple times that being able to perform there matters more to them than the award, and I want to support their performance. i also think it's okay to say MOTS7 *and* Dynamite deserve the nomination and the award, idk why y'all trash dyna so much. Would it be in my top 150 bts songs? probably not. but there's no reason to undermine it like that when the intention behind releasing the song was to have it be something light and packed with positive energy in a time where things were bleak for a lot of people. I think it achieves exactly what it intends to and some of the attitude within the fandom towards it is bothersome
@@FatimaZahra-lu8bf I said I had nothing against the song, I just personally believe they have stronger songs. I'm not hating on anyone for liking it, it's perfectly fine as a song and it serves its purpose (to inspire joy and happiness in dark times), so if you enjoy it, more power to you! My opinion shouldn't dictate your tastes. My main problem with the nomination for Dynamite is mainly because it was so painfully obvious that the only real reason it was nominated was that it was English. It's not their strongest work (in my opinion) and it's a little grating to see their Korean songs pushed aside in favour of their English one. I think that's the main reason the fandom has such a turbulent relationship with it. It's gotten the most radio play, so many performances, covers, etc, gone viral and broken records... But it feels a little hollow because it's clear that it only achieved it because the English-speaking audiences embraced it solely because it was in English. And it's a little frustrating to see that.
@@bleh4824 No, I 100% agree, I much prefer their other songs and find them Grammy worthy, but I don't see any reason to put Dyna down in order to lift the others up, y'know? It *is* obvious that Dyna was nominated because the RA actually listened to it and they actually listened to it because it's in English; however, this is not the fault of Dyna but rather the fault of the RA. It baffles me when people say "black swan/on" should be nominated instead but BTS didn't even submit them (I think they chose Dyna instead because of a) their lack of success with their previous songs and b) Dyna was an actual hit). Of course it isn't their strongest work, but I don't think they released it with the intentions that "this is going revolutionise the world" (as Yoongi said, they had already worked hard on darker themes for MOTS7, and wanted a break from that and do something fun to cheer themselves and the world up, and I think this is reflected in their approach to Dynamite). So the sentiment that "BTS have great songs that deserve a Grammy nom/award" can exist without adding "instead of Dynamite" to it because I feel like that undermines the song and the group. But that's just my two cents.
@@FatimaZahra-lu8bf That's a really valid point, and I can genuinely respect that, even if I don't agree with it :3 (I think it's for me personally just from a place of dislike for the song, as well as frustration, to be frank) Thank you for being so polite, I know how hard it is to discuss/debate when something that means a lot to you is the subject. 💜💜💜

tbh i feel like it's unfair to BTS to constantly chalk up the (limited for their impact) attention their music gets to "the enthusiams of teenage girls" when they have a very diverse fanbase (i'm 26) and make truly incredible music. Also if they were at the whims of bts' fans it wouldn't have taken 4 years of chart domination and an english track (a great joyful song regardless that bts brought a ton of charisma to) for bts to get a single nomination and not even in a main category, they are up against a ton of gatekeeping. I wish you would have reviewed their album BE for example. They're the biggest music act in the world right now (check IFPI) yet don't get the critical attention and acclaim i genuinely think they deserve because of stereotypes like this rooted in misogyny ("boyband ew bad teen girls silly etc") or xenophobia ("kpop ew bad music robots homogenizing takes etc"). idk i just wish ppl would think more thoughtfully about them and really give their music a chance to shine on its own merits. think to yourself if another artist released this who i was more familiar with or had a different image would i think it was better or more valid.

Agreed, sadly BTS don't have one or two things against them (boyband, Asian, don't sing in english, K-Pop) so they just downplay everything they do to "Teenage fangirls" (I'm a men 22yo, fan since 2015). I love Dynamite, but I still don't get why nominate them until they realeased an english single when this year they also had Black Swan, clearly if BTS didn't release any english song the Academy wouldn't nominate them. And I'm still mad that two years ago 'Tear' was not nominated except for album cover when critics gave that album better scores than other nominees.

@@baibiebaibea9740 I agree but don't get your hopes up for nothing, there's a history and legacy behind the Grammys and that's what's allowing the academy to still persist throughout the years even tho it has lost all credibility. In an interview about what he hates about the Grammys, Eminem once said that the grammys will put down records that have high sales but dont fit their “artistic grammy darling” type. What if she release something different than doing features with everybody she might get nominated but they dislike the music she puts out .I really think the music industry is actually tired of her and trying to end her career and making a lot of new female rappers to be the next hottest female
@@titihamilton9247 If they were trying to end her career, they'd stop nominating her, lol. ... or they'd do something that'd actually matter - something not related to the Grammys, lol
Can’t wait for the supergroup comprising of Charli XCX, Phil Elverum, FKA Twigs, Yves Tumor, Earl Sweatshirt and Black Midi to win Song of the Year next time around then. Should be pretty good.
The big issue with any sort of rewards being given out by the people in the field, is that people are going to reward their friends or people they admire not the actual work. But then who is going to give out the rewards and award people who probably wouldn’t even be nominated in the first place. Knowing albums could be kicked off lists it feels like The Weeknd was probably kicked off any nominations this year for other artists. I am a swiftie yet I find it annoying how she can be nominated and win so many awards while Kendrick Lamar can make three of the best rap albums of all time and get one Grammy for it. That being said him winning the Pulitzer for damn is a higher compliment than any amount of Grammy awards.
There being biases in award shows is no secret in any of these award shows (Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes, etc). Many of the nominees/productions companies/record labels will send “gifts” (monetary things such as expensive jewelry, expensive vacations, etc) to many of the people in the committee to insure a spot in the nomination list, or even to win the award(s) Example here is Harvey Weinstein who “campaigned” for his movies to get in the nomination list, and to even win at the oscars. Many great deserving pieces of fine arts (Music, Flim, etc) don’t get the recognition they deserve because a lot of these awards aren’t always purely based on merit, but [again] “campaigning” (buying “gifts” to the voters in the various academies). One big example being ‘Shakespeare In Love’ winning over ‘Saving Private Ryan’ for best picture: (You can start from around the beginning) ruclips.net/video/6tihITlPAn4/видео.html (Go about the 6:35 mark) ruclips.net/video/z4GvecFjLkU/видео.html
But the thing though is that even if they weren't awarding their friends or people they admire, even if they were looking at their actual work, it still wouldn't matter, it would still be an unfair and rigged game because of personal taste. You can deem something to be a masterpiece and there will still be people who won't see it as a masterpiece because of their own personal taste which they have every right to have and is valid, and yet it doesn't mean that the piece is bad or that they are wrong. And what someone else claims to be a masterpiece you might not see it but again, it doesn't mean the thing is bad, you just don't like it and may not even have a specific reason for that, you just don't. And THAT'S the real problem. People are too different in their music range tastes. Someone from the Academy might listen to "Every breath you take" by the Police and dislike it while someone else also from the Academy might like it and bc of that, the song gets at least one vote, which is probably what happened with the song when it won best song many years ago. I'm sure there was at least ONE person in the Academy who was not a fan of the song and to them, it probably didn't deserve to win. That's why I feel like award shows like these shouldn't even exist. It's so hard to pinpoint something being good or bad when what's good and bad is subjective and relevant to the person's thoughts about it. And also, like, what happens when multiple artists have achieved the same thing? Do they all receive the award? I feel like awards like these should be given only for straight up facts. Who's the most streamed ever in the year, you can actually fact check that and compare numbers and give an award to the winner. Achievement for the most collaborations, you can actually fact check that, artist who has the longest song, artists who has the most variety of genres in an album or idk im making shit up lol but my point is it should be shit like that, things that can be literally measured in numbers and not voted on by random ass people.
As a Canadian, I see the Grammy’s as an “American” music award. I know the AMAs are different, but a Canadian artist winning a Grammy just means that artist has successfully been assimilated into the US
@@lisacox3750 Canadians can be somewhat protective of our musicians and actors, and I think part of that is because of the population size differences and the cultural influence from the US. We have an internalized perception of ourselves as a small fish swimming against the current. A lot of our accomplishments; from music, arts, sports, and medicine, end up moving to the US or being thought to have come from the US because it’s easier to make money. Even some businesses can have an easier time working with US customers rather than across provincial boarders. A common criticism from young or immature fans is that moving to the US to pursue larger opportunities is a social equivalent to denouncing their Canadian citizenship. I think this is a dumb criticism, and most people grow out of it by the time they graduate high school, but it does affect artists mentally and emotionally. We don’t criticize other business or classically trained musicians in the same way. I knew a band years ago that was starting to see some success and had to make a decision about whether or not to pursue US audiences and the chance of a more stable career. They talked about how the label wasn’t going to support them internationally unless they moved to the States, but that would mean a social perception of abandoning their home. The band stayed in Canada and broke up a few years later because of internal struggles and a lack of external support. **EDIT: just to clarify after reading this again, I see the Grammys as an American award similar to how a Juno is a Canadian award or Victoires is a France music award. I encourage artists to pursue different audience or move to a different country if that’s what they want to do. My criticism of US assimilation is that Canadian artists are pushed to move to the States to receive support from their label and the industry. It’s expensive and time consuming to get artist visas to work and perform in the States, so most small or independent artists aren’t able to it on their own.
@@auandaily I remember JB getting a lot of anti-Canadian comments when I was in high school, I don’t remember as much for Alessia. I don’t remember Alessia getting pushed as much as JB or The Weeknd, and she performed at the Grey Cup a few years ago so I thought she still lived in Canada which would have saved her some harassment. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes got it similar to Avril and Drake. The band that I was referring to in my second comment was Die Mannequin, but that’s a little different. When Care started her band she created a private label to retain ownership of her music and art. Any label that she worked with for distribution or marketing wouldn’t make as much money off her as someone they signed to an album deal. There was probably less insensitive for the label to promote the band because of that.
@Kerry Foerster bro he had the biggest song of 2020 with blinding lights which has been #1 on billboard for over a year, he had 4 or 5 songs from his album in the billboard top 10 charts, every song from his album was on the top 100. And ur telling me he’s not good lmao

@@legendarystatus4705 there's payola and who knows maybe he used it. again, the grammys don't care about charts or sales or records or ceritifications.
It feels like the Oscars, I hate it when I'm watching, but I also love it??? Every year I get more stressed, but when someone I like (and deserves) win something, I feel like I'm part of that at some level. But also, every year I get disappointed, but never surprised, as we saw how cyclical it is. Anyway, I sure am rooting for nachosaurus to win something!!
the oscars in my opinion r a lot more reliable, lol for the grammys they've managed to mess up aoty every single year for the past decade. u know with the oscars there's the obvious snubs like green book winning over roma or crash winning over brokeback mountain, but these don't even occur 20% of the time. with the grammys its just more likely for the wrong person to win lol but i think the oscars always do animation wrong, just like how the grammys always give it to white men the oscars always give it to disney.
Same here. Like I get really invested and anxious and stressed over them and the Oscars, and for what? It doesn't affect me. In all honesty, it doesn't really affect anything. I go into it knowing how stupid it is, but care the same amount no matter what.
@@sukruthihanji4827 I wouldn't say every year. Maybe once every other year. Kacey Musgraves winning in 2019 was a great surprise but was well deserved. Even critics say so, heck even Shawn Cee who listens majority to rap and r&b really liked the album. So much that he actually put up Kacey's Golden Hour album up on his wall for display. Even though I still think Lana's NFR or Ariana's TUN album should've won last year, Billie winning all the awards kind of make sense. I think Random Access Memories was well deserved as well.
as Blinding Lights was 2020 biggest single worldwide according to IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) so was BTS' Map Of The Soul: 7 the biggest album worldwide. what these two have in common? no Grammy nominations. sure Dynamite was nominated as it should have been. it was the 10th biggest single worldwide also according to IFPI, it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks and surprise, surprise it's still charting at the moment. but nominating them in only ONE Pop category which was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance which for years consisted of just collaborations(?!?), then announcing that they will perform at the ceremony which they have always wanted, then moving this category along other categories which were dominated by POC to the preshow which was live on youtube and not on TV, to give the Grammy to a collaboration that everyone forgot about in 2020 and that didn't have that much of an impact in the charts of US or anywhere outside of it TO FINALLY USE BTS' PERFORMANCE TO KEEP 'HOSTAGE' THEIR FANS SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR RATINGS FOR A THIRD YEAR IN A ROW ??? this was the third year they used BTS' success and fans for clout. and I can assure you as a BTS fan outside of the US I never cared about Grammys, not really, but they wanted to perform there one day and maybe even win one of the awards so of course, I wanted that for them. and yeah now I'm disappointed and pissed and a part of me wants for BTS to never seek validation from the US ever again. they are the biggest Pop act at the moment with or without a Grammy and a part of me wants them to do the same thing as Abel did: to also boycott these western award shows but then I remember what Twitter user @alapadma2 said: "Of course I want BTS to ignore the Grammys like other artists have done. But we need to understand that that's a privilege Western artists have. This is their industry, while BTS are outsiders. The Grammys would love it if an outside, resistive force stopped challenging them." so the other part of me wants for them to break the last glass ceiling because that's what they have been doing for the last years: breaking records and glass ceilings. make themselves visible and taking a chair at the table where it was possible and not where they created a separate table just for them (I'm not forgetting you VMAs don't worry). to conclude I will leave here a quote from a Forbes article "But as BTS continue smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?"
@Kerry Foerster I will wise up when the academy won't treat BTS as bait for their fans to increase their viewership. This year's Grammys tanked as we all saw. Till then I will continue to stream and buy their music :)
@Kerry Foerster Agree. The grammy's gives zero fucks about charts, sales, and views. And I pray they never change that. It's because of the Grammy's I learn more artists who I've never heard of and will never hear about in mainstream media but are such GENIUSES! 2010 made me look up Esperanza Spalding! lol!
after watching this year's grammys -refuse to give poc artists nominations and/or wins they deserve (the weekend, chloe x halle, bts, doja cat, etc) -push mostly poc-nominated awards to the pre-show And end up not giving it to them (chloe x halle, bts, etc) -and using an act to promote before and during the show by teasing an award and a performance "soon" (bts, who were made to believe they would win, and whose fans were made to watch the show til the end by constantly teasing them as the next performers and then giving them a less than 3 minute time slot) i have strong reason to believe there is at least some discrimination but hey, they game beyonce, megan, her, and other black artists awards, so its impossible that they're racist, right?
They give Beyoncé, Megan the award and say that they are not racist but act racist with hundreds of others. The most famous examples are BTS and The Weeknd and Doja Cat, Chloe ×Halle The Grammy's are the perfect example of "I have a black friend so I am not racist" Absolutely disgusted with how they treated Doja Cat, BTS , The Weeknd, and Chloe ×Halle
They awarded black female rappers after a whole decade of Snubbing Nicki Minaj the only black female rapper eligible the whole decade.... sounds sexist and racist to me☠️☠️☠️☠️

The wildest part about the Grammys for me is the sheer cognitive dissonance some people have when discussing it. Mfs always are going “the Grammys don’t matter” yet they throw a hissy fit when The Weeknd isn’t nominated for one. Make up your mind, if you don’t want the Grammys to have all this power than stop giving it to them.
Man I think it's clear the most effective way to market awards shows are negative press. We really do need to stop talking about it, which will be impossible when they keep choosing music biggest artists, like Taylor or BTS.
@@6517RT i think this was incredibly prevalent w taylor. but only her most successful records racked up awards, the albums like fearless and 1989. but even recently with her albums like reputation and lover she was hardly nominated. with her newest album folklore which was her worst performing album to date, it received immense critical acclaim, a lot more than the weeknd's after hours, which is why she was nominated. the weeknd was very obv snubbed i mean if u have a critically acclaimed song which also happens to be the biggest song in billboard history it doesn't make sense for y u weren't nominated. btw i'm a huge xo fan and a swifitie. i think the ppl that shouldn't have been nominated were the white men, which sadly is the overwhelming consensus of who should win according to the grammys ppl like justin bieber and harry styles who both had albums that didn't receive nearly as much praise as after hours or blinding lights managed to get nominated.
The artist keep the same attitude. They always are angry and shaming the grammys BUT if they are nominated change their mind and put their best suit and go to ceremony like the hard rock groups with their "bad boy behaviour" and "I hate the grammys" attitude but inside love win a one and is the same situation in others awards like the oscars. They always protest but inside they wish win a one. If you don't want a one not present your album to a consideration like Frank Ocean that was very honest of his part. But they hate the grammys and to the same time present their albums for consideration. Is hipocresy after all.....and the public even considered the grammys the most important award because is inexistent other valid alternative to this "serious" awards voted by a jury, they are like a monopoly award. (all the other popular awards are voted by the fans and are teen and kids awards ). Really is necessary a new "serious" awards to face the grammys like other alternative for artists and public.
I’ve never been one to watch the Grammys. I was actually really excited to watch them this year because BTS, the first Korean group to be nominated, are actually nominated and will be preforming. But unfortunately to the disappointment of all BTS fans, their category is being presented in the preshow..... so yea, another year not watching this overly long and overly hyped award show.
No more army watching next year and Grammy proud to announce about 12M watching on the show and for sure 90% viewers is Bts Army even army from Asia wake up 3am just watch the pre-show and after announcing Group/ Duo category from more than 1M views down to 300K
I've always been puzzled by the Grammy's "Big Four" having a Best New Artist award but not Artist of the Year. Imagine the Oscars having a Best New Actor award instead of Best Actor.
Not sure why anyone expects anything from the Grammys. At least in the Olympics it's pretty cut and clear which person crosses the finish line (though admittedly less clear who twirled the ribbon the best) but when it comes to who acted the hardest or sang the coolest that's a bit less objective.
There's an upper limit to the subjectiveness though? How does a Macklemore's album win over GKMC? It almost does not matter whether one likes Mackemore's album more, it's pretty undeniable that GKMC is the more noteworthy album. No one is gonna remember The Heist in 10 years.
Y'all are having some great debates over the Academy's losing relevance and terrible judgement, but let's not overlook what a brilliant video essay this was and Mic the Snare's AMAZING editing.
There should be a RUclips Critics Academy featuring Mic, Mark from Spectrum Pulse, Anthony Fantano, Jon from ARTV, Luke from Rocked, Shawn Cee, the members of Dead End Hip Hop, Todd in the Shadows, the Rap Critic, and whoever else you can find.
I like this idea as a starting point, but that could easily run into a similar systemic issue. So I’d entrust Mic the Snare and people of similar brilliance to figure out how to collaborate with an actually representative, diverse consumer base in order to shape the new Academy itself.
i stopped caring for the Grammys ever since i learned Björk never won anything. it's fun to discuss and make predictions every year but it's so bittersweet with all the issues and bigotry and racism... feels guilty to express interest on the Grammys, like an incentive for them to continue their award show despite all the problems. this year i'll be rooting for BTS because i'm a big fan of theirs and i know how much that'd make them happy and that's about it. The Academy doesn't give me any other reasons to care for real

They always stereotype teenage girls to these blonde girl (not saying that blonde teenage girl are bad, far form it.) who are petty and only think about boys or boy band and are rude to their friends. Which is not true at all? How can you stereotype a really big group of people with different personality and interest?
"what'd the teens ever do to you lmao" If you have to ask then you've never met a teenage girl. I knew teenage girls who were not just cringey but also obsessive. In high school, when I told I female friend I didn't care for certain boy band she listened to then tried to post my address online and trash talk me to other classmates. All because I didn't agree with her and I didn't even hate the boy band just didn't care for. "but it's not like being a certain age or gender demographic plays a role in music quality" I've had to distance myself from certain fanbases because the fans were so toxic and didn't want to be lumped together with them or ashamed to admit liking it.
There's a huge flaw in that argument and that is that Teenage girls grow up and when they do a lot of them start listening to different music. So yeah there is a thing as music that has teenage girl appeal.

You really hit the nail on the head with the weird dissonance between who the Grammys are hyping up and whos actually winning. Speaking as a BTS fan, Armys have long been frustrated with how the boys are always getting interviews, articles, special performances - everything except an actual award (though that might change this year, fingers crossed. Turns out all it took to get nominated was to sing in English 😬)
that’s exactly one of the things i can’t stand about the grammys (and about western media in general) : god forbid any piece of media isn’t in english.
I enjoy BTS but wouldn't consider myself a massive fan but I feel this way exactly - it feels almost exploitative of them to constantly wheel them out for promo and whatever and then never nominating or acknowledging them.
Also Dynamite just feels like the producers just said “hey let’s cobble together a song that’s specifically designed to be big and overplayed in America”
sadly we all know theyre nominating BTS for the views and hype.. nothing about these award show is about artistry its mostly about money and politics... now im curious if they actually have the nerve to not give bts an award... they already made weeknd fans mad. their importance is already losing value.
Dynamite to me is a single that kinda baited the us industry to see if they would be taken seriously and when foreign music conform to US standards producing an english single it loses the intented meaning but dynamite is uncovering alot of racial discord in music and kpop distane

Funny that this video just missed the news as well that The Weeknd would be boycotting the Grammys entirely in the future. Looks like he won't even be a legacy act for them in the future huh
Man all the facts in this video are so on point. Grammys always award the most comfortable artist in my opinion, that are most easily digestible for the audience. They do nominate some well-deserved artist in this process but the amount of snubs are ridiculous.
Great video! I enjoyed it a ton and learned things so that's pretty cool. Also, wanna commend the comedic timing in the editing, actually audibly laughed
dude, you’re incredible your videos are so well done, funny, and informative. You deserve a lot more than what you got and I’m certain that you’re only gonna get more and more successful keep it up!!
Being a citizen from a non white non English speaking country I never paid much attention to the Grammys until this year only because bts was nominated. Its because the boys care ,the fans care fully knowing that they don't really need a grammy. I guess they see this as a final frontier to acheiving everything. Even now the lack of a Grammy can fuel them to keep creating lot of good music. Once they get it, I imagine they would be like "what next? We have already achieved world domination and the status of an icon"
The comments: The fact that my favorite artist has never won a Grammy and this artist I dislike has 20 tells you everything you need to know about the Grammys 😒

whenever the academy is wrong (so, most of the time), i'm either angry and/or disappointed. but then when they get the win right, it feels so victorious and joyful*. i really can't explain why these inane circle-jerks evoke such intense feelings in me and so many others, even when we KNOW they ultimately don't matter. *can't remember the last time it happened w/ the grammys (rip) but a great example of a triumphant moment like this was the parasite oscar sweep
Probably because America has always sold Grammy/Oscars as the pinnacle of artistry even though only few awards every year are won by deserving artists.
6:25 also noteworthy is one of the albums beaten by Christopher Cross, was "The Wall", by Pink Floyd, who never won a Grammy for any of their albums. They did go on to win Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Marooned" in 1995 (no I don't remember that one either), so they arguably did better than Bowie did in his lifetime.
Honestly just pisses me off how sexist and even internally mysoginistic the opinion of "fanatic teen girls" is. yes I'll admit they can get a bit too "excited" (which is how media always paints them) but why is that a bad thing? Can't we let people enjoy the things they love? Have you seen what football fans are like? Yet No one constantly ridicules or patronizes them for their taste and passions. The Beatles were dismissed for there large young female fan base, yet they're remembered as some of the greatest musical artists in history. These artists are liked for a reason and it's very disrespectful to dismiss them because of the harmful and sexist stereotypes portrayed onto the fan base. As well as being majorly generalizing to the fan base. (And yes I know that some of these fans take shit way too far, to the extend of stalking and physically harming these artists. And I do not condone that behaviour nor do I class them as real fans). But why is it when women like something it is used against her to ridicule her and even used to emasculate a man if he may share her interests?
@@captainaya2843 sad but true...soviety is always trying to silence the female voice, so what better way to silence us, then to start and belittle her at a young age...sighh
They tend to pick music males consider bad. Either an act will be filled with screaming females or an act will be filled with screaming males. However, most females stick to fewer acts which means they get much more say on what shows up on the Hot 100. males are more varied in what they listen to so their "votes" are spread too thin to have acts show up on the Hot 100.
Their bad reputation didn't come from nowhere. Remember when teenaged girls sent death threats to Selena Gomez because she was dating Justin Bieber? How many people stepped in to stop this toxic behaviour? Also, football fans are regularly condemned for their loutish behaviour, so false comparison.
finally a good Grammy video honestly, a lot of Grammy videos just sum up to "me mad cause they didn't award album i like" which to me always seemed weird since they are actual legitimate criticisms one could make (such as the systemic ones you mentioned) arguing over how the Grammy subjectivity doesn't line up with one's own just feels so damn pointless. i wish more people got that also #FutureNostalgiaForTheWin💅🏾❤
Honestly the fact that Sonic Youth, a band who had a long, fruitful career and produced some of the greatest, most groundbreaking and influential rock music ever recorded, was not once even nominated for a Grammy in their entire 30-year-long career proves a lot of the points made here. The Grammys exist to celebrate the status quo of the music industry, shying away from promoting anything threatening to the status quo like Sonic Youth, who influenced the likes of Nirvana and Radiohead.
If there's one thing with the Grammys that I think is better now is the fact that in the past decade they've largely stuck to rewarding big-name artists and big charting hits save for the occasional outlier like Beck and Arcade Fire. It's at least better than rewarding artists past their prime as an equivalent of a lifetime achievement award as they did with Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, U2, etc.
It only matters to those nominated. The public don't really chat about the Grammy's or what it means because it doesn't really amass to anything. Its more of a self celebration if anything imo.
this just makes me sad. the grammys are kind of like job interviews, the company are lying, the interviewees are bullshitting, and the person who gets it is more based on who the interviewer liked that day and whether they had lunch on time, and everyone is Fully Aware of all of these things but we go along with it anyway cos that's the way it's always been. plus all the racial/gender bias that's so ingrained into the system now that everyone is just, mildly unsurprised (to borrow from the video). i hate that i was one of those people mentioned, who when the news came out and while watching this video was just like yeah, of COURSE there's all these biases, it's /The Grammys/. i hate that that's a mindset i can have as a human being. great video, amazing job with the research, and i hope that we will be able to completely restructure things like the grammys so that they more reflect what society is, or at least what we're currently working towards.

it's so weird that the beatles and elvis had so many fangirls back then and now older people are like, "this was the real music"

They are relying heavily this year on BTS's fans to pull up attendance records, and then moved the only category that they deigned to give BTS a nomination in (Pop Duo) to the preshow, along with Rap (POC nominees) and R&B (POC nominees)
Forbes put out an article last year with a closing line that I think applies to artists like The Weeknd, as well as BTS:
"As BTS continues smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?"
@Trent Nozen what genre does bts do exactly?

Lana del rey doesn’t have a grammy either.
And THE BEACH BOYS. Which is unforgivable

Björk doesn't have a Grammy either.
Talking Heads only ever got one Grammy nomination.
Good to know we have always hated teen girls, scornfully ridiculing anything they enjoyed as inane.
Suppose some things really don’t ever change.
teenage girls have always been ahead of the curve. shame that people just choose to ridicule and refuse to realize it
I know it's such a shame.
They laugh then they copy
I hope that made sense
EDIT: I would like to say - Kandrick should have won that Grammy. Just because I'm a fan of hers doesn't mean i don't recognise that x

(and various members have been credited on these projects, its not just some production team that dreamed all this up for them. bts have been very involved since the beginning)
have they ever been publically acknowledged as being in an 'artistic era' the way they beatles were? no. but that doesn't mean it hasn't been happening.
also bts are HUGE worldwide which seems like a pretty diverse fanbase. check where they performed when they toured in 2018/2019. and recently the IFPI named them the best-selling artists worldwide in 2020 with three different albums in the top 10. you can't do all of that with just teenage girls or one specific demographic.
my point with this comment isn't to force you to become a bts fan, but just to dispel some of the rumors that have been surrounding their career and that work to discredit their achievements. (although if anyone wants some recommendations i'll gladly drop some ;)
if you talk to almost any bts fan who's been around for a second, we'll tell you that one of the main reasons we stick around is for their artistry. they're not just some passing fad of hot men or whatever people want to think.

Or maybe teenage girls should learn/be taught to enjoy what they like without people's opinions altering that enjoyment, since that's actually a good general life lesson.
And to me, a lot of media aimed at teen girls happens to be shallow. It's not an insult to the audience. It's an insult to the people who make that media who see young girls as more gullible. You're calling the wrong people misogynists. I'm not letting someone accuse me of having so called 'internalised misogyny' just because I think media like Twilight and early 2010s Justin Bieber is shallow and derivitive in its actual content.
@@FatimaZahra-lu8bf That's a really valid point, and I can genuinely respect that, even if I don't agree with it :3 (I think it's for me personally just from a place of dislike for the song, as well as frustration, to be frank)

tbh i feel like it's unfair to BTS to constantly chalk up the (limited for their impact) attention their music gets to "the enthusiams of teenage girls" when they have a very diverse fanbase (i'm 26) and make truly incredible music.

That wont happen cuz those artists still want the dirt of the Grammys. As long as winning a Grammy is the biggest achievement in one's musical career, we won't really "forget" about the recording academy. Just look at the Weeknd, hes never going back to the event but still bitches about it. Its only natural that the academy still thrives. The artists that we support still think of it as the greatest milestone of their journey.
@@chaizan9733 yeah true :< I really hope theres a new awards show fit for our times that will become more credible and bigger than the grammys!
Well, shouldn’t the Grammys have talented people on the awards? Because I don’t want a total lip syncer on the stage.
@@satine2342 aight.
@@baibiebaibea9740 I agree but don't get your hopes up for nothing, there's a history and legacy behind the Grammys and that's what's allowing the academy to still persist throughout the years even tho it has lost all credibility. Essentially, I stand for artists who don't need a prize like this to get the respect they may need. No artist nowadays needs the recording academy to be deemed a "renowned musician", from Queen, to Bjök, to some may say BTS, or other Korean artists that definitely have it in them to get a Grammy. Nowadays the musicians themselves don't really need that award in my opinion.
In an interview about what he hates about the Grammys, Eminem once said that the grammys will put down records that have high sales but dont fit their “artistic grammy darling” type. And like how you showed, the whole artistic yardstick in itself is so subjective, made even worse if the demographic of the people making decisions is a small and select one. That’s why it’s crazy when artists that sell amazingly worldwide, like The Weeknd and BTS that topped IFPI, are snubbed like that. Isn’t there a reason why they’re so popular then? If they don’t fit the artistic metric, then that’s just like what they did to Rock N Roll. Widely popular, but so easily snubbed by that certain group that seems to their subjective opinion is better than everyone else.
Most logical and probable answer.
LMAO, I HAD NEVER SEEN THAT CLIP OF BECK WINNING THE BEST ALBUM GRAMMY BEFORE. That is amazing. Kanye showing a rare instance of self awareness, and Beck desperately not wanting to be on stage because he felt he didn't deserve the win. I had to rewind and watch it like 5 times lol.
I mean, there was no self awareness, Kanye later gave an interview saying "Beck didn't deserve it, Beyonce did"
@@shaileshkandpal2408 It was fully self aware. He walked up there and waved it off, making a very intentional joke about the VMA Taylor Swift debacle. What he said in an interview, where he was asked to share his opinion doesn't make his walking on and off stage a self aware joke.

4:10 So even as far back as the 1950s, society has had a strange distain for teenage girls. Good to know, I guess?
I think what he’s talking about there has to do with fans who are teenage girls. This problem just happened with the 2021 event. A whole bunch of BTS fans were writing mean comments under the winners’ posts. And these awards are nominated and chosen by the Academy, NOT the fans.
@@satine2342 I understand your point of view and partly agree with it but I think that's only because BTS have a huge fanbase like really gigantic so it's obvious you'll see them more often than angry fans of other artists. A lot of BTS fans are actually the whole grown-up people, I saw a lot of posts from them about not hating other winners and just support boys. And actually, I think almost every post from BTS fans was about hating Grammy (which is still questionable but that's not a hate toward Gaga or Grande) so it's not that bad, they're not bunch of screeching girls without brain like a lot of people think.

Omg yes!

Many of the nominees/productions companies/record labels will send “gifts” (monetary things such as expensive jewelry, expensive vacations, etc) to many of the people in the committee to insure a spot in the nomination list, or even to win the award(s)
Example here is Harvey Weinstein who “campaigned” for his movies to get in the nomination list, and to even win at the oscars. Many great deserving pieces of fine arts (Music, Flim, etc) don’t get the recognition they deserve because a lot of these awards aren’t always purely based on merit, but [again] “campaigning” (buying “gifts” to the voters in the various academies).
One big example being ‘Shakespeare In Love’ winning over ‘Saving Private Ryan’ for best picture:
(You can start from around the beginning)
ruclips.net/video/6tihITlPAn4/видео.html
(Go about the 6:35 mark)
ruclips.net/video/z4GvecFjLkU/видео.html

I know the AMAs are different, but a Canadian artist winning a Grammy just means that artist has successfully been assimilated into the US
I always wondered a Canadian's take on this...so thanks. This is interesting to know.
It’s expensive and time consuming to get artist visas to work and perform in the States, so most small or independent artists aren’t able to it on their own.
who? JB? Alessia? Celine?
@@auandaily I don’t understand what you’re asking
There was probably less insensitive for the label to promote the band because of that.

but nominating them in only ONE Pop category which was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance which for years consisted of just collaborations(?!?), then announcing that they will perform at the ceremony which they have always wanted, then moving this category along other categories which were dominated by POC to the preshow which was live on youtube and not on TV, to give the Grammy to a collaboration that everyone forgot about in 2020 and that didn't have that much of an impact in the charts of US or anywhere outside of it TO FINALLY USE BTS' PERFORMANCE TO KEEP 'HOSTAGE' THEIR FANS SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR RATINGS FOR A THIRD YEAR IN A ROW ???
this was the third year they used BTS' success and fans for clout. and I can assure you as a BTS fan outside of the US I never cared about Grammys, not really, but they wanted to perform there one day and maybe even win one of the awards so of course, I wanted that for them. and yeah now I'm disappointed and pissed and a part of me wants for BTS to never seek validation from the US ever again. they are the biggest Pop act at the moment with or without a Grammy and a part of me wants them to do the same thing as Abel did: to also boycott these western award shows but then I remember what Twitter user @alapadma2 said:
"Of course I want BTS to ignore the Grammys like other artists have done. But we need to understand that that's a privilege Western artists have. This is their industry, while BTS are outsiders. The Grammys would love it if an outside, resistive force stopped challenging them."
so the other part of me wants for them to break the last glass ceiling because that's what they have been doing for the last years: breaking records and glass ceilings. make themselves visible and taking a chair at the table where it was possible and not where they created a separate table just for them (I'm not forgetting you VMAs don't worry).
to conclude I will leave here a quote from a Forbes article "But as BTS continue smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?"
Well said
@Kerry Foerster I will wise up when the academy won't treat BTS as bait for their fans to increase their viewership. This year's Grammys tanked as we all saw. Till then I will continue to stream and buy their music :)

-and using an act to promote before and during the show by teasing an award and a performance "soon" (bts, who were made to believe they would win, and whose fans were made to watch the show til the end by constantly teasing them as the next performers and then giving them a less than 3 minute time slot)

Not sure why anyone expects anything from the Grammys. At least in the Olympics it's pretty cut and clear which person crosses the finish line (though admittedly less clear who twirled the ribbon the best) but when it comes to who acted the hardest or sang the coolest that's a bit less objective.

sadly we all know theyre nominating BTS for the views and hype.. nothing about these award show is about artistry its mostly about money and politics... now im curious if they actually have the nerve to not give bts an award... they already made weeknd fans mad. their importance is already losing value.
Dynamite to me is a single that kinda baited the us industry to see if they would be taken seriously and when foreign music conform to US standards producing an english single it loses the intented meaning but dynamite is uncovering alot of racial discord in music and kpop distane
Your videos are always so clear, so well considered, and so obviously passionate about the topic at hand. Thanks for making them, they always make my day!
"This holds more weight for me than the Grammys" - top comment on Mic The Snare's 2020 awards video. And I 100% agree
Mic, I put so many pins in it that I ran out of pins. Luckily they all paid off, thanks for another amazing (& well researched) video.
Great video! I enjoyed it a ton and learned things so that's pretty cool. Also, wanna commend the comedic timing in the editing, actually audibly laughed
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The way this got suggested right after BTS got snubbed....
ikr...

@Glen Warne im sorry, WHAT, I get that people have opinions but damn...
dynamite deserved, i'm still confused about that one category
“Fetch the Bolt Cutters” not being nominated for AOTY is a damn shame
Yes, such a shame.
dude, you’re incredible
your videos are so well done, funny, and informative. You deserve a lot more than what you got and I’m certain that you’re only gonna get more and more successful
keep it up!!
We have already achieved world domination and the status of an icon"
wow this video was phenomenal, this really puts it into a whole different perspective. great vid!
The comments: The fact that my favorite artist has never won a Grammy and this artist I dislike has 20 tells you everything you need to know about the Grammys 😒
Well its true for most of the cases...
Your story telling skill is on another level, i mean you make me watch 40 minutes video like an easy task
I tuned out from the Grammys this year, and from what I've been hearing, I didn't miss much.
Love your pfp
@@daftereverafter1648 Thanks!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the videos you make, the quality and the amount of effort you put into them is genuielly amazing, and it always brightens my day whenever you post a video, I just really appreciate what you do, as people on the internet go, you're pretty cool :)
as someone who has been stuck listening to the same music for years I would love to see a video of you recommending albums based on albums people may already like! your reviews are some of the only ones I trust lmao
whenever the academy is wrong (so, most of the time), i'm either angry and/or disappointed. but then when they get the win right, it feels so victorious and joyful*. i really can't explain why these inane circle-jerks evoke such intense feelings in me and so many others, even when we KNOW they ultimately don't matter.
*can't remember the last time it happened w/ the grammys (rip) but a great example of a triumphant moment like this was the parasite oscar sweep
Probably because America has always sold Grammy/Oscars as the pinnacle of artistry even though only few awards every year are won by deserving artists.
1:38 probably the best transition in any music related video Grammys video editing video or even just video by you ever
I am consistently and increasingly impressed with your biting satire and overall sophistication.. wow
Your video on Glee and this are both very enlightening and spectacular. Subscribed!
IKR
Society hates teenage girls for some strange reason. Teenage boy to but not as much as teenage girls
Also, football fans are regularly condemned for their loutish behaviour, so false comparison.
finally a good Grammy video
honestly, a lot of Grammy videos just sum up to "me mad cause they didn't award album i like"
which to me always seemed weird since
they are actual legitimate criticisms one could make (such as the systemic ones you mentioned)
arguing over how the Grammy subjectivity doesn't line up with one's own just feels so damn pointless.
i wish more people got that

“Wow! It’s an award statue!”
“Aw, it’s a Grammy....”
“Hey! Don’t throw your garbage down here!”
It only matters to those nominated. The public don't really chat about the Grammy's or what it means because it doesn't really amass to anything. Its more of a self celebration if anything imo.
Watching this video and vibing to 15 step in the background is a great experience.
Dear GOD this video is immaculate, essential, and insightful.
The video essay version of Crazy Frog.
that ajayii clip 😭
this just makes me sad. the grammys are kind of like job interviews, the company are lying, the interviewees are bullshitting, and the person who gets it is more based on who the interviewer liked that day and whether they had lunch on time, and everyone is Fully Aware of all of these things but we go along with it anyway cos that's the way it's always been. plus all the racial/gender bias that's so ingrained into the system now that everyone is just, mildly unsurprised (to borrow from the video). i hate that i was one of those people mentioned, who when the news came out and while watching this video was just like yeah, of COURSE there's all these biases, it's /The Grammys/. i hate that that's a mindset i can have as a human being.
great video, amazing job with the research, and i hope that we will be able to completely restructure things like the grammys so that they more reflect what society is, or at least what we're currently working towards.
