Perfect, just what I've been looking for, thank you. I'd been blaming bad door seals, (the other Focus fault) for the damp inside the car.
I'll start stripping it out now.
I'm so glad you posted this... I just found a swimming pool in my spare wheel well!
Did it work?
@@jamesjakeman1 Yes! I combined a few suggested fixes which included removing the bungs, applying sealant around the vents under the rear bumper, and the cleaning/water removal steps, and its made a huge difference.
Unfortunately I have since discovered a second leak with drips appearing from inbetween the plastic panels above the boot's window. That doesn't appear to be as common as the other leak so I think it will be harder to find 🤔
@@Schmorg_24 I have had this 2 it was the welds on the boot.
@@jamesjakeman1 Glad I mentioned it now! I don't know anything about cars so I rely on tutorials like yours!
Where abouts are these welds? Is this something I can access and maybe silicone myself or do I need a mechanic to do it?
Open the boot you will see the welds on the inside rain track. You can just silicone it.
Thanks this is so the problem I’m having. Literally had a leaky car for past few years on passenger side. Have had heavy rain for three days now and car was saturated so googled wet carpet 2012 Ford Focus and this video popped up. So here I am outside in the dark under my car poking the holes underneath and saturated my sleeves lol. Thankfully I only had some mould forming in under the boot coverings. Thank you
Yeah sodden sleeves. Tell me about it..
I have a ford fiesta hatchback and I had a major leak. I thought it was my windshield so I got the windshield replaced. But after watching this video, it’s definitely the bumper! Thank you!
No mould in mine, I noticed the wet carpets on passenger side for first time just yesterday and started the clean-up process immediately (luckily I like to keep my car clean anyway). Loads of water came out of those plugs under the rear bumper! Thanks for the great advice!
Hi, we have the same problem with a 2014 Focus Zetec , we noticed over the last two -three years having misty windows and we checked it out on you tube as to what could be the problem, and someone had said “ wet carpets” and as far as we were concerned we never had wet carpets so just carried on as normal, anyway the misting didn’t go away and there were no foisted smells within the car! Then we came across your video on trying to solve the problem, well when we checked again we found the rear footwell of the passenger seating area was soaking wet, the next day we checked the spare wheel well of the boot area to be with 3” of water so I done what your video showed by removing the bungs from under the car I removed the seats from the rear and pulled the wet carpet up and placed supports under so the water can seep out onto the floor so I can mop up! We have this evening placed a humidifier into the car and left to run over night!.....
I also contacted my Local Ford dealer from where I bought the car Brand New in 2014, and told them of the common faults that the Focus have and they said to me that I can pay £75 for a diagnostic check, and if they found the problem and I wanted them to fix it it would cost us £150 per hour to rectify the fault!!! I told them that this by all accounts a “Common Fault” and should not have to pay! It’s a design fault!!! And that’s what I received from the car sales I bought the car from!!! So I’m now thinking of spreading the word like we all should do and say what a load of crap the focus is!! Subbing to your channel!!
Focus are wank and leak all the time
Perfect 😊 thank you. Lots of water out ..now to clean and dry the car💪
Did this today, worked a treat... Legend mate.
Thank you!!!! Have been going mad with wet carpets, take ages to dry them and then they're wet again. Awesome.
Just found the bungs and opened them, water cascaded out. Then found the well where the spare tyre sits is full of water. Had been coming in somewhere near the rear light cluster. Thanks again!
I’ve the same problem but only a bit mould. Spare wheel well like a swimming pool and water in front and rear foot wells. I gather the water runs from the rear to the front of the car? Hope to get it sorted next week. Super helpful video. Thanks.
Ye sounds 100% same issue.
Lift the back seat up and see if it's wet there if so the 1000% is the issue
Great video - lifesaver! Easily a good pint of water gushed out of the back right hand side!
Really hoping this works, my car has been soaking on the passenger rear seat side, spare wheel well and even the fron passenger footwell, ive pulled out the bungs and some water came out, most of todays water is in the seats by now i guess. to think me and especially the Mrs have been blaming my fishing tackle!! Really appreciate you taking time to do the video.
I have the same issue as you described bro. Is it work for u?
@@truthseeker210 Not sure yet mate, i only found this video yesterday and took the bungs out last night. My car is full of water, so i cannot tell at this point.
I did see another video where they fix the issue, sealing the vents, the vents just run into this part where the bung is, so i am very confident it'll work.
How did it go? I am considering trying this, had the same problem.
@@brokebaddieboutique it worked, very easy fix too👌
@@qotsa5728 Wonderful thank you! I’m giving it a go this morning. 😊
Thank for. This video. My 2012. Focus is wet in the foot Wells. Took it to the garage. They told me I needed new door seals. But I think they was out to make money out of me. I am definitely going to do what. You have shown me. Thanks.
No problem. Subscribe to help me grow the channel.thanks
i quoted to re-seal vents £120
Excellent video....sorted the problem without any fuss!
Good morning. Thanks for your great video. My wife’s focus looks just like that. We’re having the rear vents resealed this week and after that it will need cleaning. In the video you mention APC cleaner. Which one did you use? Cheers
So glad I found this video. Having been in lockdown for 9 months and using my focus very rarely I’ve recently discovered this exact issue. I wouldn’t be able to do what you have done in the video, any ideas where I should take my car to resolve this. Many thanks
You can call a few detailers they will charge a few hundred pounds.
I have previously removed the hole interior and dryed by hand using clothes and a radiator
@@jamesjakeman1 I think that’s my only option really. Really appreciate the advice. I’m about to go and remove the bung at least to stop any more water accumulating.
@@dangriffiths1372 did it work mate, do I need to take the insulation out of the holes? Also do I just leave the bungs out? Thanks
@@aidanamson8568 yes it did. Back when I removed the bungs it was heavily snowing so I didn’t remove the insulation, but I don’t think that’s needed. I didn’t put the bungs back in, that way the water will now fall out the bottom instead of building up again. Very easy to locate them and remove, trust me when I say easy I know very little about cars and I had no problems! Best of luck
@@dangriffiths1372 great, thanks Dan, will try it. My car smells terrible too. Thanks again.
Can't thank you enough right now, mines a 64 plate and rear footweld iz flooding badly, just spent ten minutes of y Sunday nothing popping those bungs, hopefully I see some improvement now, eas told its a 400 quid job so here's to hoping
Any update! ☺️
Hi I found this by chance and it got me out doing it to our " new focus " well its a 17 but I did it anyway and yes it also had a fair bit of water in one side, I pulled the sound proofing out through the grommet hole as it was soaked and might cause it to rust and impede drying, its not easy but it will come, I suggest using grips though, oh and wear a coat as your arm will hit sharp edges.
This is a great video very informative, many thanks.
Exact same thing happens with the mk7 Fiesta too. Dead easy to fix the leak if you know how to take off a rear bumper cover, it's the water damage that's the pain to deal with.
Cheers mate. Our model is a 64 plate but taking out the bungs has drained a lot of water out.
Just hope it rectified the issue.
Thank you so much
Did it? ☺️
Did the front or rear carpets or padding get wet? If the padding got wet the mold will come back. I do these all the time. Have a 2013 Focus titanium coming up next week.
Also, I recommend wearing gloves and a respirator. I would also you mold killer. When finished I would recommend using an ozone generator with the ac recirculating so it kill all spores in the interior and through hvac system.
The front always gets wet as there are channels under the carpet that the water travels along.
You sound like a detailer this video is for people that carnt afford or would like to DIY. I've done 7 2012 Ford Focus in 2 years no mould came back.
In the video I recommend gloves & mask.
Good luck with your one next week
How did you stop the water getting in, in the first place ?. Does it still smell like a damp Dog after you have cleaned it ?.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
And I thought my focus was bad this is next level
There's a worse detail video I did 2 weeks ago on an insignia. Once mould gets a hold it spreads fast.
I've got the classic boot leak and water is getting in above the rear wheel arch. Such a bad design
Great tip, water poured out on mine too! Once the bungs are removed. Does this solve the leak issue completely?
Yes the water can now get out rather than filling up and going inside the car through the vents
Legend thanks pal
Hi, seems like I've exact same issue! Pulled that plastic bit out and loads of water came with it.
I seems to have some material covering the hole though, feels like wet cotton wool, any idea what that could be?
Great video though, have subscribed!
Ye they all have the cotton wool I leave it there as long as the bungs are out the water can get out rather than entering the car.
Thanks for posting this. I have a 2014 Ford Focus ST and I've been chasing this problem too. Constantly cleaning and looking for water source.
My question is thos though: Why is that compartment sealed like that from the factory? So all you have to do is romove that rubber/plastic cap and the water issue is resolved?
Hey mate ye pop them out if water floods out that's your problem.
I have had 15 focus with this issue and with the bungs out its fixed, you can remove the rear bumper and reseal the vents with tiger seal if you want a OEM fix
@@jamesjakeman1 You saved me from paying for a mechanic, much appreciated mate!
Just done this water came pissing out hopefully this has now fixed my issue 🤞
Dry it as much as you can wet vat towels,
Keep stamping in rear foot Wells to bring the water to the surface.
Run the car for few hours full heat windows closed
Just followed your video emptied what must have been 2-3 litres of water. Many thanks for the information, is there a need to replace the grommets?
No mate just leave them open
After taking the plugs out, you also need to remove the insulation, which is soaked with water. This then allows the water to run straight out
Failing to do this will just cause condensation to keep occurring in the car
I saw this, but only on driver side
How?
@@stevenfido9338 how what ?
@@derekfleming3095 removing the insulation with taking the car apart lol iv removed the plug and water drained out
@@stevenfido9338 you don’t have to take the car apart, just get underneath, remove the plugs and insulation
Spot on! Thanks
Hi mate. Ace vid. I've subscribed. Just taken the bungs out of my 2012 focus and it was full of water. All my foot wells are full is well. There was a load of fluff material in there I've pulled out is well. So I I leave the bungs out the problem is likely to go away? If so what's the point in ford even putting a bung in? Makes no sense??? Cheers 👍
Hey Jack. The design is to let air in to the car to help it breath.the vents are glued on behind the bumper the glue fails so the vents fill with water and flood the car * poor design
The car in the video was sorted 2 months ago and is back today getting a new battery all dry no smells or water ingress.
So as long as bungs are out water won't come in.
Sorry its 2 years ago but did it clear all your footwells of water?
Top Man thanks mate
legend mate. thank you.

on mine it also leaked from the brackets for the gas struts and from the corners of the boot where two panels overlap
Exactly like my daughter's .wish I'd seen this before it went to ford .oh well 👍
Best way to sort the problem ,take the rear bumper off ,vents out (ring out sound proofing stuff or just rid of it) clean reseal vents back in ,taking the grommets out does NOT fully drain water out as body pannel slopes inwardley so theres always going to be water sitting in there ...
Is it the sealing around the vents that's the issue of leaking or the vents themselves? Having a nitemare with mine
@@Nitetim3 it seems to be the seals around the vents are main problem ,mine had shrank so wasn't fitting tighty ,amazing how much water can get in with a small cap 🙄also check the rear lights etc ..
Fantastic video thankyou just had a lake appear in the rear passenger footwell so removed the plugs at the rear behind the bumper.
Do you have a video on a way to stop the water from leaking or will the plugs removed solve it for the rest of the time I have my car?

@@jamesjakeman1THANK YOU 🙏🏽 so after taking out the plugs and draining water out, we don’t have to put them back in? will this now be a place for water to exit only??
Hi, I have same problem, but my Focus is a 2004 (ZX5), and the area behind the rear bumper looks entirely different. Have you had any older Focus come in with this problem, and have any tips for an '04 Focus? I tried looking all under the car, could not find any bungs/plugs. Thanks for video!
Some amount off mould what a difference nice one 👍
This one was disgusting but cam out great

Do Ford glue the under carpet sound deadening material to the floor in those 2010 to present models?
Hi Trying to find a water leak in the driver side front and back what we find was a air vent from the heater under the driver seat when you switch on the blower water is coming in car it is not engine coolant but plain water had the front panel of where the wipers are looks good in side the box the car is a 2007 convertible cc3 It my be the A/C outlet pipe backed up do you know where it is I live in Norfolk so not near you thanks for any help you can give me happy xmas and new year to all out there.Jeff
Thank you for the video, I discovered the same on my 2011 model on the n/S/r boot well was wet and couldn’t see why and then yesterday n/S/r footwell was wet like window been left open but everything was shut and seals dry.
Seems this is my problem also but have read I need to take rear bumper off to re seal the air vents? Does the way u have done in video prevent it from coming back and save me removing bumping etc?
Thank you for ur time
Yea my method works forever

Under the car, I only know about hatchback
Hello thanks for the video. My 2012 focus is wet on the carpet but under the back seats. So if i take that bung out. Do I just leave it out and not put it back in. Cheers mate
Leave it out. Once there out the water will run out no fill up and go into the car

Why do Ford have those two tabs one on either side..do Ford know its gonna be leaking one day into the car
Are these buns on a focus mk2 cc3 not seen then it's got vents thanks.
How much would you charge for this ?
i've done this but there is some sort of foam stuff inside do i pull it out or leave it in ?
I leave it, as long as the bungs are out water won't come inside
Those vents are stuffed with foam insulation which retains the water, I had to remove the rear bumper to get to the vents and remove the soggy insulation
Do I leave the bungs out or put them back in
Leave them out
Does just removing the bungs underneath sort out the problem? Do I need to take the bumpers off to get to vents? Thanks
Just release the bungs so water can escape. Rather than go inside the car.
Thanks mate for sharing this
Doesn't matter what you do , as you mentioned those air vents will eventually fail again

I just bought from a local private 2014, ford focus sport (just 10 days), I found the water leakage in the trunk. how to fix the leakage point by my self? #really disappointed...
Thank you so much 😊 🙏🏼
You’re welcome 😊
Completely solved the issue, so very grateful for this post.
I'm hoping that I might get some help. I've looked through Ford forums from a decade ago and nothing seems to answer my question. I have water collecting on both back passenger floors and I cannot locate the problem as boot is dry. I have a Ford focus mk2 2005. I've recently bought it. I know back right panel window was replaced as glue is still present and there was glass around that area when I was cleaning. But than why wouldn't the back couch or ceiling upholstery not be wet. I've noticed my rear tailgate window is often condensated. I just don't know where from is this water coming in.
The windows will get condensation if there is any moisture in the car.
My advice is take all seats and parcel shelf out. Run a hose over the top with someone in side with a flash light you will find the leak
Hey, i had the same problem i Just pull it out and there was a lot of water. I dont have and mold but had wet carpet behind the driver. Do you think that only make full heaters and slighly open all Windows will be enough? Sorry for my bad English i hope u understand me.
Any mold*
And what about the wool, its was bronze and fking wet, should i throw away to the rubish bin? Please answer me for all the questions. Very thank you ❤️
I used car vax to eliminate water on the carpet behind the driver. But i think can be some water under carpet. Do you think that full heaters and slighly open window its enaugh? And heaters of course on the floor Without a/c right?
I made subscribe, can you answer me? 😁😁
Hey sorry for late reply been at dealership all day.
No I have a 13 plate in today and I have had it running for 4 hours still water rising up when push down a few times
I have done this and it worked great however after taking out the stuff and leaving the plugs out its very noisy inside my car is that normal. I don't mind I'd rather that than leaking but I just wondered did anyone else notice it or is it another problem I've come across
Should not be noisier as above the foam is the vent that's fell forwards, only the vent goes in side to the boot
Would the carpets not need lifting up to dry underneath properly and stop foist smell ?
Not if you use the wet vax and turn the heaters full windows slightly open.
Its definitely harder in winter as its cold so might need a longer time with heaters on.
I have done it both ways by taking the hole interior out but it's not essential.
@@jamesjakeman1 ok thanks that will save alot of farting about gonna try your method over weekend and see how it goes. All this because of a wire in the tail light getting caught under the seal as i put it back on 😢

Hi if this doesn’t fix problem will it be most likely be the sealant on vents?
If there is water under the rear bench seat this will be the issue as soon as you pop the vents and water comes out problem solved.
If no water comes out then it's not the vents or seals from there you need ro remove boot trim run a hose pipe over the car with someone inside the car with a light looking for were the water is coming in.
Hope this helps
That’s great thankyou popped seals water flooded out I have a wet dry vaccine gonna do that on floors of water comes in agen will look at vents
Will it most likely be the bumbs issue like on ur video of loadsa water came out? My gf had same problem but was coming in through Ariel with her getting black roof panel on
I found it beyond belief that a modern car can exhibit problems of this kind. Far from perfect as was my 1956 Morris Minor back in 1974, there was nothing remotely near this level of trouble. What is all this 'new' technology doing for us?
Why are those plugs even in there?
Where does it come from ?
Does this fix apply to the 2013 model as i am having the same problem

The first step i would personally take ( all garages will do the same ) take a hose and spray the car with a stream of water.
Get some one inside the car with a flash light and check every seal. As previously we had a leak from the boot lid top right letting water in.
We were able to see the water running down so we sealed it and problem solved.
Check were you have the most water that will give you an idea what side the waters coming in

you need to take the bumper off and seal the air pockets.
I've done 15 of these if the bungs are out the water stays out. This is a quick fix not permanent.
