You had to have a history of full-time employment and unblemished references from a landlord. So, my parents were fucked! Although, thank God, there was an NHS (thanks to those lefties) and my father's peptic ulcer was operated on and he was cared for, 'free of charge', there was still no 'sickness benefits/sick pay'. So, my parents had to rely on the kindness of family, friends and the bloke who was their landlord, giving them help/a break. Eventually, because of those 'lefties', people didn't have to fear illness, with the introduction of the NHS AND 'sick pay'. Eventually, those 'lefties' ensured that everyone had affordable housing, too. If, at 6, I was reading a 'sanitised' version of the story, it wouldn't surprise me and I will bow to your superior knowledge.
