Interesting how that same snearing, condescending, contemptuous, snide, cynical, sarcastic, mocking tone was already deeply ingrained towards language, life and listeners in his shtick in those early days. Love it. The "All Things and Bright and Beautiful" is another great sketch of exactly the same tone. All that's changed over the years are the topics he attacks and now it's more believable than being an obvious written joke. Just wonderful.

Moron. You completely miss my point and Stu's. Don't you see, Stu plays a character, has always done. My point was that all those same character attributes I described are still underlying themes and traits in his modern work but better disguised and delivered. And yep, none of my friends like Stu because they fail to get the multi levels of his humour and character ... just like you. Perhaps you'd like a milder comedian! (Michael MacIntyre, perhaps.)

    • @graceygrumble
      @graceygrumble 4 года назад +9

@@lordlucan66 I read the story for myself, in 'The Pancake' - a book which was part of The Beacon Books' reading scheme - when I was 6.
My good, old-fashioned, working-class parents taught me how to read and write before I even went to school. Because, the 1944 Education Act meant that it was possible for their children to escape poverty, through education.
They weren't 'posh' enough to get a council house. You had to have a history of full-time employment and unblemished references from a landlord. So, my parents were fucked!
Although, thank God, there was an NHS (thanks to those lefties) and my father's peptic ulcer was operated on and he was cared for, 'free of charge', there was still no 'sickness benefits/sick pay'. So, my parents had to rely on the kindness of family, friends and the bloke who was their landlord, giving them help/a break.
Eventually, because of those 'lefties', people didn't have to fear illness, with the introduction of the NHS AND 'sick pay'. Eventually, those 'lefties' ensured that everyone had affordable housing, too.
If, at 6, I was reading a 'sanitised' version of the story, it wouldn't surprise me and I will bow to your superior knowledge.
Thanks to my parents, no matter how high they enabled me to fly, I'll always be a 'leftie'. x

I'm proud to be a 'champagne socialist' and one of my best mates has a husband who was in my class at school, causing mayhem as soon as the teacher left the class... or turned their backs. Daft as a brush, 'thick as a brick', academically and worth more than anyone I know. He started with furniture removals and ended up with an international shipping company.
His good, old-fashioned, working class parents bought him his first, second-hand, Luton van.

It is very funny and Mr Lee is a comedy genius but there is a potential flaw in his logic.
From the point of view of the side where the grass is greener then surely it is not greener on the other side?
Sorry for being obtusely anal about a funny sketch of course, but I've always found that the "grass is always greener where you have watered it".

Sure, "the grass is always greener..." is a sort of proverb. And like a lot of proverbs it uses a metaphor to get the point across. I don't see how a figure of speech can't be both proverbial and metaphorical; after all, many proverbs depend on or are indeed metaphors ("too many chefs spoil the broth," etc.).
Stew's definition: "a metaphor saying that the situation you're in now doesn't seem as good as a different situation that you might potentially be in at a later date." Giving Stew the benefit of the doubt, I think you could safely say he means that the desire to alter the situation you find yourself in implies a change that, quite naturally, could only come about at a future date. I don't like my job, and I want your job -- the mentality encapsulated by Stew's chosen proverb almost always depends on a kind of imagined future, so to speak, where the circumstances are different. Hence his use of the word "potentially."
Lastly, he never asserts that the phrase is inherently or always redundant. It's really only in the context of the Switzerland vacation and the improbable highway grass examiners that the phrase becomes redundant. So the joke doesn't rely on a misunderstanding. The joke is funny because it literalizes a turn of speech we're used to understanding strictly in a metaphorical sense.
Our expectations were confounded and from thence the humour arose.
Of course, if you're too dull to know what a metaphor is, or what redundancy means, then you may have been confounded in a different way altogether.
Try to keep up, it's going to be a long year.
