      I truly believe that ‘blocking the plate rule’ does not apply during a rundown. I thought I remembered a scenario just like this last year and the announcers said that. But just like any other rundown, if the runner makes any contact with the fielder, and the fielder doesn’t have the ball, then it’s interference. Just wanted to share. Love your vids, stay safe and God Bless..

    Rundowns eliminate the plate blocking rule, however if Tatis had collided with Smith or had to move to avoid Smith before he has the ball obstruction would've been called. Coming from college umpire btw.

    • @jeffzaun1841

      So what you're saying is that Tatis would have been safe were it not a rundown? And Jomboy's comment about how Tatis is moving before the catcher has the ball would have been relevant if it wasn't a rundown?

      Jeff Zaun it can be argued that would be the case. Rundowns create interesting situations for an umpire and certain rules end up being bypassed just so the play doesn’t become a complete debacle.

    • @briankaste6931
      @briankaste6931 4 года назад +4

      Exactly. The best baseball play as the runner is to continue running full speed at the person blocking your basepath, so that the umpire is most likely to recognize the obstruction (which is most obvious if you actually collide with the obstructor). Of course that risks having a big collision that could lead to both people getting injured, especially in this case going against the catcher and all of his gear, so it may not necessarily be the best overall play for the runner to do run like that.
      If you slow down or try to go around, you don't always get the call because it isn't always obvious that the potential obstruction caused your path change. Just like how Jomboy pointed out, its not clear if Tatis Jr. changed his basepath, and if he did, there is a potential argument that he adjusted his path so that he could try to slide to avoid an upcoming tag rather than to avoid the obstruction.

    Does the "blocking the plate" rule even come into effect here? It was a run down... When do you ever see a Shortstop or Third Basemen not stand in the baseline to chase a guy back? During this particular rundown, the catcher was just the next in line during the back and forth, so I don't think he did anything wrong. It wasn't a traditional play at the plate. But I'm one of those fake umpires... haha So who knows. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.

      That't not what the rule says... if it did he could be anywhere in the baseline and still be covered by "making a play on the ball".
      A catcher shall not be deemed to have violated Rule 6.01(i)(2) unless he has both blocked the plate without possession the ball (or when not in a legitimate attempt to field the throw), and also hindered or impeded the progress of the runner attempting to score.

Now, I am partial because I’m a Padres fan, however I seriously doubt Tatis wanted that collision. He’s a skinny dude and would take the brunt of the hit. Plus Smith was in kind of an no man’s land spot by the plate. Regardless, I would almost guarantee Tatis was not doing that on purpose or trying to get in a dirty hit.

      I agree with all of this except for you saying Tatis would take the brunt of the hit. It doesn't matter if the dude's 5'6 and 170 or 6'4 and 210, the runners going full speed and the catcher is stationary, the catcher's gonna take a fuckin shot.

    • @bigbicepbill3928
      @bigbicepbill3928 4 года назад +2

      Michelle Hara yeah, I agree. But Tatis is gonna take a pretty good hit too because of the equipment and being vulnerable because he was trying to avoid Smith. He’s our Messiah and he knows it, I doubt he’d willingly railroad a dude.
      But for whoever was saying the Dodgers weren’t upset, they were pissed. The whole dugout started chirping and I heard a dude yell from the dugout during the game say, “watch out tomorrow night.” Which I don’t get because it was clearly not dirty, and if anyone’s fault, it’s Smith’s.

    The one thing about Tatis for sure is he gets way too aggressive at times on the bases. I hardly want to tell a guy like that to "chill" but you don't always need to go 110% time for a crazy play.

    This is addressed to Steve Succop, since I couldn't find your comments under someone else’s comments. Having watched and listened to our great national pastime since 1961 when I was in Junior High School, I have on dozens of occasions seen catchers ”hang around” 3rd base, 1st base, and even 2nd base to get an out during a run-down. I have also seen outfielders get credited with a putout at those bases. Oh, the sheer beauty of the great game of BASEBALL; I love it so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️
