Can we request non- baseball stuff during the season that might get looked at after the season, or is there a separate form for that kinda breakdown.
I truly believe that ‘blocking the plate rule’ does not apply during a rundown. I thought I remembered a scenario just like this last year and the announcers said that. But just like any other rundown, if the runner makes any contact with the fielder, and the fielder doesn’t have the ball, then it’s interference. Just wanted to share. Love your vids, stay safe and God Bless..

2019 season only?
At the last cubs game there was a huge collision bigger than this one
Jomboy I would like for you too do the royals v Yankees games with bo Jackson and deion Sanders but your suggestions only go back to 2019. Thanks

Rundowns eliminate the plate blocking rule, however if Tatis had collided with Smith or had to move to avoid Smith before he has the ball obstruction would've been called. Coming from college umpire btw.
So what you're saying is that Tatis would have been safe were it not a rundown? And Jomboy's comment about how Tatis is moving before the catcher has the ball would have been relevant if it wasn't a rundown?
Jeff Zaun it can be argued that would be the case. Rundowns create interesting situations for an umpire and certain rules end up being bypassed just so the play doesn’t become a complete debacle.

And that’s how the catcher came to be the Prince of Bel Air.
He got his life flipped-turned upside down. He saw that Tatis was up to no good. Started making trouble over by 3rd base.

LunaCosmos90 He whistled for a trade and when it came near, it was the Braves for 39 mil over three years

The inning was 7th not 8th
He is allowed to stand there but if there is a collision without the ball it is obstruction
ok fake ump
John Miller what’s your stand besides being a d bag
Exactly. The best baseball play as the runner is to continue running full speed at the person blocking your basepath, so that the umpire is most likely to recognize the obstruction (which is most obvious if you actually collide with the obstructor). Of course that risks having a big collision that could lead to both people getting injured, especially in this case going against the catcher and all of his gear, so it may not necessarily be the best overall play for the runner to do run like that.
If you slow down or try to go around, you don't always get the call because it isn't always obvious that the potential obstruction caused your path change. Just like how Jomboy pointed out, its not clear if Tatis Jr. changed his basepath, and if he did, there is a potential argument that he adjusted his path so that he could try to slide to avoid an upcoming tag rather than to avoid the obstruction.
Brian Kaste and you are far more likely to dislodge the ball

Does the "blocking the plate" rule even come into effect here? It was a run down... When do you ever see a Shortstop or Third Basemen not stand in the baseline to chase a guy back? During this particular rundown, the catcher was just the next in line during the back and forth, so I don't think he did anything wrong. It wasn't a traditional play at the plate. But I'm one of those fake umpires... haha So who knows. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.
no I agree with you. This was a run down that happened to take place between third and home of course Will Smith is gonna on the baseline
Well you’re allowed to do whatever when you have the ball, so of course you can chase a guy back. Now in a regular run down you’re still not allowed to block a base without the ball.
You are an excellent fake umpire because you are exactly correct; it’s a simple run-down play !!!
ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
Agreed, it was not a traditional play, was a run down
Danny C. 🙄 What the hell are you trying to argue ? That was a “regular” run-down, whatever you mean. There was no base or home plate involved in this play. Turner was not near third base and Smith was not near home.
ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
I think the only thing Tatis did wrong on the play was not tagging up properly.
Yes exactly!
His only job as a base runner was to tag up, so he did everything wrong.
He has no idea what the rules are. He would rather look good and make a mistake. Just look at him-All about himself and he cannot even tag up properly. JOKER!
What he did wrong is move to the right side of the little line
@@javtimestwo In a year and a half of pro baseball, that's the first legit baserunning mistake I've seen Tatis make. Everyone brain-farts from time to time. But trust me, he knows the rules.
You could say they got "entangled" at home plate 🤷🏻♂️😂
williams simp
Neither the runner (Tatis) nor the catcher (Smith) were near home plate. It was simply a well-executed run-down play by the DODGERS involving the pitcher (Kelly), the 3rd baseman (Turner) and the catcher.
ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
Fake umpires. Lol. Catcher is making a play on the ball which allows him to be where he is. Runner out.
That't not what the rule says... if it did he could be anywhere in the baseline and still be covered by "making a play on the ball".
A catcher shall not be deemed to have violated Rule 6.01(i)(2) unless he has both blocked the plate without possession the ball (or when not in a legitimate attempt to field the throw), and also hindered or impeded the progress of the runner attempting to score.
He's fielding the throw BUT he also positioned himself way in front of the plate before the throw was even made. It's a judgement call that could be argued either way.
Well he didn’t really hinder the runners path really. He would’ve been out anyways🤷♂️
Evan Kehoe Good point. But remember, strikes and outs make the game go quicker. So, he is out!
@@lastrapsbaseball That and it's a rundown, a lot of the rules (especially basepaths ones) go out of the window, and a call of out makes the play not entirely a debacle. There was a lane to home, but Smith placed himself so that it wasn't good, and Tatis bet on Smith not expecting his move.
Thats legal especially during a rundown
What’s the thing on tatis hand?

@Brandon Johnson can you try that again in ENGLISH. Joe Biden said of you jeez this guy makes no sense.
The catcher can go where ever he wants as long as he’s going for the ball.
agree
He had already set up there before the ball was thrown. It just seems weird since its during a rundown but I don't know if that changes anything
That is correct!
guppy719 well yeah that’s how every catcher sets up when a runners coming from 3rd. So that doesn’t matter because he had the ball before tatis got there. It would only matter if he blocked tatis without having the ball.
guppy719 he was more set up in foul territory. Regardless I don’t think it’s blocking when you are like 10 feet in front of the plate and get the ball before the runner gets to you.
If it's not legal I don't know what Will Smith is supposed to do in that situation, just move over during the rundown and let the runner have home for free?
exactly , that’s as legal as legal gets
I thought Jomboy knew baseball ? Geez, it’s a simple run-down play !!! 🙄😬🤣😂⚾️⚾️⚾️
ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
U still have to give the runner a lane though if u don’t have the ball, and the catcher was already set up in front of the plate
I think in a rundown/pickle you are allowed to stand there. It's different than other plays at the plate, because the runner doesn't have as much speed built up to cause serious injury.
Mario Garcia not in a rundown because by rule it’s not a play at the plate
I can't thank you guys enough. My appreciation for baseball is at a place it hasn't been since I was a kid and it's all thanks to discovering this channel.

"Is there a code among catchers blocking the plate?"
"Yeah. The code is, you get knocked on your ass."
- Bob Boone, who played men's baseball.
The editing is getting better with these, great breakdown!
the throw from Turner was a little to the left of the catcher moving him slightly to the base path which is in no way 'illegal' but since the catcher has the ball and ready to make a play it doesn't matter that the defender is the catcher...the defender has the ball in possession ready to make the tag ahead of the runner..no infraction imo
unless you have the ball PRIOR to blocking, or the umpire rules that you HAD to block to field or catch the throw, then no, the ball came in as Tatis was making a move towards home, thats obstruction
I appreciate you don’t pretend to be an expert. The quality of your video is great.

For a pickle, what difference does it make if it's a catcher at home or a shortstop at second base?
There isn’t any difference. Geez, it’s a simple run-down play !!!
ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
excellent point..
I have literally no clue why the Dodgers were upset about this. It was in no way intentional or dirty. Now, I am partial because I’m a Padres fan, however I seriously doubt Tatis wanted that collision. He’s a skinny dude and would take the brunt of the hit. Plus Smith was in kind of an no man’s land spot by the plate. Regardless, I would almost guarantee Tatis was not doing that on purpose or trying to get in a dirty hit.
@@gabrielb.1688 Justin turner said a few words to Tatis Jr. after the collision
I agree with all of this except for you saying Tatis would take the brunt of the hit. It doesn't matter if the dude's 5'6 and 170 or 6'4 and 210, the runners going full speed and the catcher is stationary, the catcher's gonna take a fuckin shot.
Michelle Hara yeah, I agree. But Tatis is gonna take a pretty good hit too because of the equipment and being vulnerable because he was trying to avoid Smith. He’s our Messiah and he knows it, I doubt he’d willingly railroad a dude.
But for whoever was saying the Dodgers weren’t upset, they were pissed. The whole dugout started chirping and I heard a dude yell from the dugout during the game say, “watch out tomorrow night.” Which I don’t get because it was clearly not dirty, and if anyone’s fault, it’s Smith’s.
Who was upset? I watched the whole game and didn’t think the Dodgers were as upset compared to the padres...
elijerrr I heard the whole Dodger dugout yelling and, like I said, heard someone yell at Tatis saying, “watch out tomorrow night!”
ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. You deserve more recognition/fame. You should fill in Don Cherry’s spot he’s a legend but you could do a good job in his place and fill the hole in sports fans (mostly hockey) hearts and Saturday nights.
The one thing about Tatis for sure is he gets way too aggressive at times on the bases. I hardly want to tell a guy like that to "chill" but you don't always need to go 110% time for a crazy play.
"Keep your knee out my f'ng face! "
Tatis thought it was gonna be a hit, and then tagged up cause he thought Joc's throw was gonna sail and he didn't see Kelly back up.
even if he thought it was going to be a hit he should be tagging up just in case
@@miguelhernandez8577 That's true? Maybe he temporarily forgot there was 1 out, not 2? Maybe he's just dumb?
Miguel Hernández it could also be since it wasn’t super deep and Joc’s momentum was taking him towards home. He then tagged up to draw the throw just in case he can get an airmail:
yeah its just a terrible play from tatis regardless. He needs to be on 3rd until the ball lands or is caught there. He had to know the outs because grishom just got thrown out at 2nd right before this

Interesting stat: After his first season the big leagues in 2019, Fernando Tatis Jr. had more multi-strikeout games (35) than fellow-Padre Tony Gwynn had in his whole career (34)
As an umpire a phrase we use to help discern whether or not a player can block the path is that the player has the right to field the ball if the ball is imminent, hence no obstruction here.
All the "fake umpires" in the comments agree with Jomboy: he doesn't know the rules very well.
