Here is a unique story from an old timer that I heard. I live in California in the San Francisco, East Bay. An old timer told me that he was in Berkeley, and the fog took over. Having only jeans and a leather jacket, he went to the grocery store and bought some saran wrap, he, then stripped down at his girlfriend’s house, and wrapped himself up in saran wrap, and road home in the fog, nice and toasty😂. I personally love the national Cycle windscreens. They work wonderfully when the weather isn’t so wonderful.

    Great vid guys👍
I used to have to commute 82 miles a day all year round come rain, shine or snow!
I’ve learned a few things over the years:
It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a super duper laminated goretex suit, but don’t be tempted to ride in anything with a drop liner in cold weather without wearing waterproofs over. As they get wet, they’ll soak water into the outside layer and as it evaporates you’ll freeze! Best to layer and if not using a laminated suit decent over waterproofs are a must.
I use surplus navy over trousers. They have zipped lowers making them easy to get on over boots and are goretex, so very waterproof. They’re wider at the ankles than army or air force trousers making them easier to get on.
You can buy really decent zipped waterproof tops too ex surplus for less than£40.
Boots and gloves are usually overlooked. There’s nothing as miserable as wet feet and hands. Good point about gtx gloves and heated grips, often overlooked. Decent boots shouldn’t leak. Buy the best, buy Altberg! Gloves, I use Held Air’n Dry twin compartment and get away with using heated grips as I fit hand guards to my bikes. They’re a must for winter riding! I also keep a spare pair of Richa Carbon winter gloves in the top box so if gloves get saturated, so I have a nice warm dry pair available
Visor cleaning, good tips given guys. Adjusting pinlock screws is sometimes needed, and any spray polish which is silicone based like pledge or Mr Sheen sprayed inside and outside the visor works well keeping the water beading up. Ditto headlights and mirrors which you can use car Polish on too.
Agree RE fog lights. Bikes need better lighting standard.
Tyres, I check pressures and treat depths weekly. Grippy sport tyres lose a lot of their advantages in the wet, so I use touring tyres with high silica content for enhanced wet weather grip. I never use rain mode. It’s way too soft and takes some control off the rider. I ride in road mode and as you say Mark, just ride to road conditions.
Yes, tyres lose roughly 20% grip in wet conditions but that can increase to 100% loss if you hit oil or diesel. Point is, greater care is needed on roundabouts, muddy roads etc. I also double stopping or following distances in the wet. 3or4 seconds following distance up from 2 seconds and allow double the stopping distances for a safety margin.
Keep riding style nice and smooth and bike as upright as possible so take care with riding lines and smoothness. Keep revs a little lower than normal too so change up and down in a more relaxed smoother manner. No need for quick shift action!
The worst part is cleaning the bike but prepping it beforehand makes the job easier. I coat the underside in Lanoguard every autumn and do the sides and nooks and crannies with acf50 every few weeks. Makes cleaning usually a matter of just hosing down.
Stay safe, enjoy the riding, wet weather’s fine as ling as you prep for it!

Good advice, I ride all year approx 18000 miles so have very good quality kit and actually enjoy riding in bad weather. Good advice on engine braking I constantly bang on about it.👍

I commute all year round on country A roads. Yes, I have a GS, I use 80/20 adventure tyres in the winter, got a BMW Euro guard suit( 1/2 price from Germany!), underneath I wear winter running bottoms, wicking long sleeve top with a Keis heated jacket,(the best thing ever!!), and gortex gloves if wet. I use Pledge on the visor, thanks to you, and it works a treat, plus the summer/winter meshed seat cover so you aren't sitting in wet for hours. Love riding in the rain as it hones your driving skills, you look out more for road issues by advance looking, leaves, mud gravel etc so you have to pick and set up your approach lines earlier . The look back at the close driver works 90% of the time, cause you still have the 10% driving totally on autopilot who sees loads of accidents but never have one!!! Not forgetting the driver you pass at night who never dips their full beam after you pass, and the press of the hazard lights eventually works!!

Riding a GS in rain mode gives a little more MPG in my experience. Commuting on roads other than Motorways its enough. lets face it between October and April it's pretty much rain mode for everyday life motorcycling or otherwise in the UK anyway.

There is also a vast diference between water resistant and water proof, even with the latter it is often a good idea to stand under a hose wearing it to check out if it actually is waterproof.

When I commuted in and out of London I used to love riding in the rain. It's happened a few times on tour but good waterproofs and a bit of common sense work wonders...PS, I bought a new bike a 2020 R1250RS...I'm going to name her Maggie.

Good video chaps. I use layering for my rides. On a recent trip to Cornwall I realised I needed to invest in gauntlet gloves to take account of rain wicking above the wrist. Lesson learned. Ride safe.

I love riding in the rain, I just wish the car drivers also could love the rain as much as I do because they seem to develop brain problems as soon as the first drops fall. I also love my TCX X-Tour EVO GTX, have them for years, never a drop of water in them and I've ridden in a torrential downpour more than once. :) I also use Rain mode on the GS as soon as winter comes around and I switch it back to Road in the spring. I find that it keeps me in check, especially because the traction control is on the higher setting and helps a lot with grip. Even with all that, I slow down about 15-20% in the wet/winter weather. Cheers lads, nice video as always!

yep, I use rain mode during the wet autumn and winter with normal damping, def not on soft.

Ok on a GS....or similar..Adventure bike, get a Chrome filled Harley Davidson, that takes 6 hours to clean... you wont wanna ride in the rain then...!!!!
Adventure bike probably fun...i will wait till march...☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️🌡🌡🌡🌡
Rain no fun for me, still if rain floats your boat crack on....💧💧💧🥶🥶🥶🏍🏍🏍🏍 keep safe , have fun..!!!!

Only a fool breaks to the two second rule! Interesting about the tyre grip - I find I ride very gingerly in the wet because I have no idea how much grip I have left. The 20% number is pretty reassuring. Thanks, great video team!

No probs buddy. We all change riding in the wet as it’s a good thing as stops us riding hard in the rain although sometime our heads rule too strongly

    • @medler2110
      @medler2110 7 месяцев назад +1

I think grip changes relative to how wet the roads are, you get that initial damp road or winter morning damp, I feel there is less grip, then on a proper wet road, then you go to the extreme wet where you risk aquaplaning.
Also a warm wet road allows the tyres to keep some heat, but cold wet you lose that as well.
Something I found was because I went slower round corners the front end seemed to "drop in" this was unnerving, so I went even slower and it got worse, then I tried adding a bit of deliberate counter steering, this stopped the "drop in" and increased my confidence in corners, not saying I take them like its a dry road but its all a lot smoother now and riding in those conditions is just about enjoyable.

Which tires do you recommend for riding in cold and wet conditions? No off road, only tarmac. Roadsmart 4 or mutant?

My bike at the moment has Avon Trailriders fitted currently at 7000 miles and not much sign of wear, I really like them and rate them highly. My next set of tyres will be Metzler Tourane Next which are a set I have part used but changed for the Trailriders. My plan is to use Dunlop Mutants for my next two trip next year to the Austrian and Swiss Alps then later to the Artic Circle so the Metzlers will just be a temporary fit. The Mutants are awesome rain or shine and my last set I used all year round. Ride safe.
