Another song from the Breakthrough concert at Boulder
Once again Kris shows what a great poet he is. Such amazingly brilliant lyrics.
The dvd has become pretty rare as I've just noticed... I'm really happy to have one :-)

    The Pilgrim; Chapter 33
    ------Kris Kristofferson
See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans,
wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile--
Once he had a future full of money, love and dreams,
which he spent like they were goin' out of style--
And he keeps right on a'changin' for the better or the worse,
searchin' for a shrine he's never found--
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse,
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down--
    He's a poet, he's a picker--
    He's a prophet, he's a pusher--
    He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned--
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.
He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars,
And he's traded in tomorrow for today--
runnin' from his devils, Lord, and reachin' for the stars,
And losin' all he's loved along the way--
But if this world keeps right on turnin' for the better or the worse,
and all he ever gets is older and around--
From the rockin' of the cradle to the rollin' of the hearse,
the goin' up was worth the comin' down--
    He's a poet, he's a liar--
    He's a prophet, he's a dreamer--
    He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned--
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.
And there's a lot of wrong directions on that lonely way back home.
    Why chapter 33?
Just because he and some of his buddies, who had inspired him for the song, were of that age when Kris wrote this song...
    The Pilgrim; Chapter 33

"Taxi Driver" surprised me for a lot of reasons, especially the great soundtrack and the fact that Travis tried to seduce Sybill Shepherd with a Kristofferson Album ! lol

@@richardnamber813 It is mentioned when Travis brings Betsy to lunch. She calls him "partly true, partly fiction, a walking contradiction."

"Taxi Driver" is a great film . "Alice " was great, and old Kris was in a BUNCH of great ones, including "Two Lane Blacktop," "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" and "A Star Is Born." His version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" helped me and my family through a little bro's crisis...we also heard "Why Me, Lord?"

Wow. Always loved Kris K. It's only in my older years that I can better appreciate the lyrics to this musical poem. How often it is in life that becoming introspective we discern the contradictions in our lives. As a soul on my way to heaven, it's clear to see myself both as a saint and a sinner, a walking contradiction--ain't a one of us yet reached perfection. It's in living those contradictions that we finally learn what is best, what to avoid and what to pursue. Fame, popularity, ritz, glamour and wealth may seem what we want, but they never really satisfy. After 64 years, the only thing I've found that brings true contentment is a close relationship with my Creator. I've heard Kris talk about how Johnny Cash and June C.C. helped him see the light of the Gospel, although he didn't use those exact words to say it. Johnny only lived 6 months after June passed--sure wish we could hear Kris & Johnny sing together one more time.

You have plenty of song lyrics right here in this response. Particularly the line about being a saint and a sinner.

I bought that movie just to find this scene lol That was a nice tribute to Kris. Kris had played in Scorsese's great movie "Alice doesn't live here anymore" before (1974)

Kris has been my favorite singer/songwriter since the first time I heard him back about '71 I think. This is still one of my two favorite songs...the other one being "To Beat the Devil" also by Kris. I had the good fortune to meet him about 8 years ago after seeing him in concert at the Capitol Theatre in Davenport, Iowa. He was the biggest reason that I started writing songs. Thanks, Kris...for inspiration, examination, pleasure and.....for being the conscience of my generation....

Maybe you are not correct about Kris' appearance in Two Lane Blacktop"? I've never heard or read that he played in that one. Warren Oates and the Beach Boys James Taylor and Dennis Wilson played in it as I've just googled. But Kris did play in great movies, I agree with you on that :-) I unfortunately don't know his version of "Will the circle be unbroken". Do you know where I can find it?
