From the 1950s to 70s, Black South African artists walked a tight rope when it came to artistic freedom. You could be jailed, banned or killed for singing about the state of the country for non- Whites. Many chose the lonely life of exile where at least they could speak out. Those who remained were kept on a tight leash. The apartheid govt would literally scratch records to remove words, songs etc. Anything even remotely political was an issue and you risked losing your whole career. Enter the Bubblegum era where Black artists resorted to singing about everyday life like tight shoes 😊, going shopping, sports, love etc. Some were very clever and hid the true meaning like on Chicco's song, "We Miss you Manelo" 😉
Looking at the number of likes on your comment, shows the ignorance amongst South Africans today for not appreciating the sacrifices made for this country.
