  • A few months ago I built an Aichi D3A Val for Pearl Harbor's 80th Anniversary, now i've switched sides to the US Navy to commemorate Midway. My next build is Academy's 1/48 Vought SB2U-3 Vindicator. I scrambled like hell to get this done on time, I hope the fruits of my labor weren't in vain.

    Awsome work ! I'm sad to see model master paints are gone now, i have a stockpile of them, every time i i bought a model i would buy the paint to build it, i haven't built any kits in a long time..

    Building this kit right now, I must say - you make the cramming of the cockpit into the fuselage look easy! It's not!

      Oh there were definitely difficult moments, I bet you're referring to the aluminum framing in the cockpit right?

    For those interested in the Battle of Midway, this aircraft had a rather sad end. Capt. Fleming and his crew were killed in an attack on the Japanese heavy cruiser _Mikuma,_ an action for which he was awarded the Medal of Honour. Anyone who wants to search for it can find a picture of the burning hulk of _Mikuma_ shortly before she sank. On top of the number 3 turret the wreckage of Capt. Fleming's aircraft can be seen. I have never been able to reliably ascertain whether Capt. Fleming was hit by flak or deliberately crashed into the Mikuma. Witnesses report that his bomb was dropped from very low altitude and narrowly missed. Some say he crashed into the sea while others say he crashed on top of the turret.

    • @paulmiller9384
      @paulmiller9384 5 месяцев назад

      That story was debunked years ago. The debris on the turret was just parts of Mikumas superstructure, not Flemings a/c wreckage.

      @@paulmiller9384 Debunked? I’m not trying to mislead anyone. True or not, it appears in a number of publications. I have certainly read alternative versions, one of which says he crashed into the sea. I’m not sure what it says on his MoH citation and don’t especially care if it doesn’t align.

      I'll either cut pieces of very thin aluminum tubing and slip the wire through or just glob on some microscale kristal klear.

    Thats the most laborious way to paint a model. Lots of technique put on but barely visible in the end.

    • @ofmodelsandmonsters

      I know, but I love detailing interiors, whether they're visible or not.

      @@ofmodelsandmonsters the interior is amazing what Im, talking about is the weathering of the entire external part of the model. the blotching effect is completely gone.

      Have a look at pics of the Midway "Vindicators". Fabric held on by tape (called them "wind indicators") Major sun fading on the overpainted camo and markings,
      Stains and scratches everywhere. The Marines were at the end of the priority list, and used worn Navy hand-me-downs. Midway was the end of the
      line for the SB2U and F2A.
