I think he's quite charming - like a regular guy. I want to see more shy people on TV or here - And his voice is amazing. OK, Collins had a nice singing voice, but the raw edge of Peter Gabriel's voice, I could listen to him all day. Since I'm a prog fan from the late 70s, I bought all the remastered CDs from Trespass to The Lamb recently, and I can't stop listening. Genesis was excellent then.
That's one of the reason's I'm so appreciative of his work. He's not afraid to enter into the dark recesses of our humanity that many people either refuse to be open about or are otherwise conditioned to never do so. I have a mantra: Honesty over comfort. It's very inspired and influenced by this wonderful human. To be an honest and open being you have to be willing to admit your flaws, even letting yourself fall into the vulnerable position of being under the microscope for all to see.
I like his statement that music doesn't always have to be about who you laid the night before. Music is a medium can relay many messages and it always has.
Peter is a legend, a very talented musician. He bought the best out of ustad nusrat. And gave us great music to listen to that will never happen again the collaboration was amazing.
Peter Gabriel es a great human and his talent is upper of world's know... and the Biko' song is an alert of Human Rights. Thanks Peter... really thanks...
It's quite sobering to think that that only 2 years after this was broadcast (and I remember watching it at the time), Nelson Mandela was released and Apartheid came to an end. In the same year the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet block with it...momentous times indeed. And here we sit, squabbling about Brexit...it makes my blood boil, the pettiness of it all.
And here we are, Oct 2021, 18 months into the biggest power grab and wealth transfer which will result in the biggest global tyranny ever seen in history. The 1% don't want peace, freedom or prosperity for the rest. Quite the opposite.
He more likely is an extreme introvert who developed necessary (for show business) extrovert character traits. His coolness is not aloofness or antipathy but assured spiritual and intellectual bearing, i would say.
Wogan didn't usually. It was a very showbiz-oriented programme. This was a rare episode where they discussed something important other than someone like Barbara Cartland plugging a book.
The week previous I was playing the song Salisbury Hill by Peter Gabriel then this week I went to church and my pastor was speaking of dreams and of Peter and Gabriel in the Bible which blew my mind I've always loved Peter Gabriel but I never recognized that his parents named him biblical Destin for greatness of which she is he's one of my favorite artists I just figured I'd bring that to light for people that love him as well
Gabriel revealing his intelligence, eloquence and humanity. But he seems strangely uncomfortable, even shy, in front of the studio audience, for a man whose performances as the vocalist of Genesis were notoriously flamboyant.
Knowing your self is a true recipe for shyness, It also puts you in a special place when you face an audience as your vulnerability captures the crowd. With this the audience experiences the fear and exposure of being onstage then the joy and pleasure of a performance that constantly verges on breakdown.
the flamboyant performances were his way of completely over compensating . believing he wasnt worth looking at on his own. He felt the people needed to see a spectacle he used his stage costume to Hide more than anything.
What great people; Biko woke us up in the 1980's; Apartheid fell but sadly everyone went back to sleep, and the wealth flows away still today from sub-saharan Africa.
Wogan used to get stick in the pomp era of Parkinson for not measuring up as an interviewer. I disagree but then I think I'm remembering Spitting Image taking the piss out of him. Then again for them everyone was a target!
You're onto something. Going back to Spitting Image, they used to have a Wogan puppet who always said (whoever the guest was) 'tell me about the book, I've heard they made it into a film. Was it difficult filming the nude scene?' I reckon the writers knew about the autocue!
+Robinson Road He never interviewed Peter Gabriel though, so Wogan's got some brownie points on him. It always makes me laugh when they call Parkinson "the man who's interviewed EVERYONE WHO'S ANYONE". I always think, no, he never interviewed Peter Gabriel.
ken131 Bono and U2 were probably more inspired by the Clash, they started out as a punk band. But U2 are certainly admirers of PG, they did Amnesty shows together, the Edge once presented him with an award and Bono covered Don't Give Up.
For the most part, I live both before and before. He was always experimenting. I think this last album doesn’t push boundaries like his previous work but I give him lots of credit for having the energy to keep going
This was Gabriel at his most commercially successful.(Big Time, Sledgehammer etc.) Nothing corporate or exploitative there. And look how South Africa has turned out. Wonderful! I love globalists!
@Dave Hughes Sorry to cast aspersion on one of your "rock heroes". He fell prey to the commercial lure of the industry at the time, as did his former bandmates. I was referring to Biko a piece of maudlin schmaltz that seemed to rank him as an early SJW. Again, sorry to hurt your.... feelings.
@@plasticweapon Too bad you can't spot all the 80s posers....They made a lot of money kissing up to corporate radio. As far as being an asshole goes, "it takes one to know one".
This is why Gabriel is elevated above the rest of his prog protégés - it’s a question of integrity and conscience.
Peter's speaking voice makes me all giddy. D'awwwww.

Long live prog-rock!....

I love it when artists use their art to make the world a better place for everyone.....bravo..
How can anyone not like PG after watching this? Also I actually remember this being broadcast. His last comment at the end is great.
A musical genius and a great campaigner for human rights. I love this man and his work.
Great campaigner for human rights and a really nice bloke. Musical midget in my opinion.
@@blackmore4 This man is a Musical Genius!...
a great musician and amazing integrity, humble,. charismatic and a humanist

What if your being comfortably honest? 🤔
He's gorgeous great singer too😍
Peter has had great influence on so many people. On me for one.He has opened many doors not just in music. Thanks Peter.
I like his statement that music doesn't always have to be about who you laid the night before. Music is a medium can relay many messages and it always has.
0k Im in love with the Peter Gabriel from the early days and now and every year in between ❤❤🎶🎼🎼🎼

Another thing I just remembered - this interview happened just one year after Peter Gabriel sang 'Sledgehammer'.
1987!...

Brilliant artist, and I loved him on Star Trek.
I didn't know he appeared on Star Trek. Could you possibly give more info about this? I'd love to see this!

Yes, this is typical gabriel....His extrovert persona belies a shyness which those who are familiar with his character are very much aware of.
Freddie Mercury & Peter Gabriel are the finest British talent.

Can anyone imagine Jonathan Ross ever covering something so worth-while and important? TV interviewers today shame us all.

"Hewwo, Peter Gabwiel. Is it twue you hate Phil Cowwins??"
@Wuhan Virus
Er, Jonathan Ross? You know, Wossy?
@Wuhan Virus You wouldn't recognise a joke if it would be dropped onto your feet, would you?
@Wuhan Virus Sorry, mate. I have no idea what you're talking about.

That's his demeanor in 99% of his interviews.
It's 'dorable. :-3
***** True. Another of course is Michael Stipe of REM. Uncontrolably shy

A legend but still nervous in interviews :)
Barrel Shape in his autobiography Phil Collins says Peter still sounds like that with him. Umming and Ahhing all the time
smooth language and great accent plus sexy face:)
My Mother's friend LOVED him lol
Lena N Terry Wogan ???
His voice has not changed at all over the years
great video! thanks for posting! I love Peter Gabriel and his music!
What great people; Biko woke us up in the 1980's; Apartheid fell but sadly everyone went back to sleep, and the wealth flows away still today from sub-saharan Africa.
I think it's safe to say that Peter Gabriel and the Special AKA alone did more to end Apartheid than Maggie Witcher would've ever bothered to.
Fantástico Peter Gabriel!!! Es único en su estilo!!! Larga vida a Peter!!!
Dudo esta muy enfermo.
Mon idole depuis les premières notes en 1973. Je t'aime Peter
Great!
Today last year was the 30th anniversary of Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer'.
You couldn't tell where he's from by his accent or lack of...He has his own way of speaking his own dialect

...if it wasn’t for Peter’s song “Biko”, i would remain ignorant about Apartheid.
Rest In Peace, STEVEN !😰💔🙏😇
Isn't that Brian Pern?
We were all younger 30 years ago
Wogan used to get stick in the pomp era of Parkinson for not measuring up as an interviewer. I disagree but then I think I'm remembering Spitting Image taking the piss out of him. Then again for them everyone was a target!
I believe Wogan used to rely more on the autocue and Parkinson tended to do more research on the guests. Parkinson was more of a journalist.

Amazing artist and singer just like Phil Collins both top artists xx
A musician saying something for onece
How did Biko the song not get nominated for qn Oscar?
Very Brian Pern.
Imagine asking today if musicians pushing a political message was an irresponsible use of their power!
I am a Collins fan but still a great admirer of the brilliance of Peter Gabriel.
Why so serious?
And how did South Africa turn out.... :(

Most famous? He's my favorite ex-member, but Phil Collins is way more famous, at least in the US.
Phil Collins wasn't an ex member of Genesis in 1987....he was very much with them doing the Invisible Touch tour.
+octomonkey1980 D'oh! Yeah, I guess I wasn't thinking at all when I wrote the comment. Hahahaha thanks for pointing that out.
No worries, Phil has been an ex member for a long time now so I guess we're just kind of used to it! 😀
Yeah how TF did that happen? Phil’s a pretentious mung bean.
i like what he said bout rock stars i don't what a rock star preaching to me (BONO)
U2 is awesome sauce :P
Bono got his activism from Peter, partly. He started it.
I don't mind rock stars preaching but they need to put their money where their mouth is and not avoid tax like Bono famously does.
ken131 Bono and U2 were probably more inspired by the Clash, they started out as a punk band. But U2 are certainly admirers of PG, they did Amnesty shows together, the Edge once presented him with an award and Bono covered Don't Give Up.
but the diff between bono and PG is bono became a twat and PG didn't
He looks like Kevin Costner
Give me a break….
He was great until he started doing world music just went dull & boring
