  • Yesterday (30 March 2017) a Piper PA-23 Aztec (N229DS) reported having landing gear issues while on approach into the Daytona Beach Int'l Airport (KDAB). The pilot declared emergency and made several attempts to extend the landing gear but without any success. They managed to retract all of the gear back up at which point they determined a gear-up landing would be their best option. ATC included via LiveATC.net. Thanks for watching!

The crew of the aircraft didnt want to land at that moment anyway, they wanted the speedway hold to try and troubleshoot. And the window is only for the nose gear. The mains could have come down while the nose stayed up. The tower wanted them to do a low approach to see if they were down or up. I had a similar problem, the other way around. I took off and my nose gear didnt come up, but the mains did. The only thing you have to tell if your gear us up or down are the window and three lights. If the lights arent working, you have no way to visually check gear, so you ask the tower to.

      the bulges under the engines help act like skids, keeps all the balance on the plane to that small surface area, presuming the nose doesnt dig in you can just skate around and be OK. that's why they were sure to orient the props flat so they wouldnt upset the skid.

      Who cares? It's a POS Aztec that probably got written off. Insurance companies own the engines and props (and won't lower your premiums for 'saving' them) and shutting them down combined with the gear retracted created that float fest on round out. I'd have kept them running and bent the shit out of them.

    • @cardinaloflannagancr8929
      @cardinaloflannagancr8929 7 лет назад +22

      Did not appear to be of concern as neither the pilot or tower mentioned that. More important to concentrate on the landing than potentially saving a prop and damaging an engine.

    • @jeffross6623
      @jeffross6623 7 лет назад +34

      I find it amusing that the Aztec manual actually recommends that when a gear up landing must be performed that the flaps be retracted and engines should be stopped and then the pilot should bump the starter to get the props horizontal. In addition in theory you can land the aztec gear up and not damage the aircraft at all with the exception of the gear doors and the plane will settle back on the tail when stopped.
      I saw an aztec several years ago where the pilot thought he had an unsafe gear condition and stopped the engines on short final, ended up landing very slightly short, folded the gear rearward and ended up with back injuries all because he "wanted to save the engines and props". I say let the insurance company have the plane!

    Fantastic coordination between the Pilots and ATC. All procedures were textbook, and were executed in a calm and collected manner. There is a reason why Flight School is so rigorous. Good job.

    SMOOTH execution, and MAN did they get out of that airplane in a HURRY. Nice job, all. Hopefully as minimal damage as possible, which I imagine is still a good bit to that fuse bottom. I know they typically recommend AGAINST stopping and feathering props, but I think I still would, and it looks like he did a great job with it. If you can save TWO engines, that mitigates a lot of cost. Still, unless you were PERFECTLY comfortable with it, as this guy obviously was, I think I'd keep 'em spinnin. This pilot was one COOL dude all through this.

    Fantastic job by everyone, especially the pilot. However WTF was tower thinking in letting a 757 take off seconds before the light aircraft with an emergency is about to cut power and belly plow it in?? Caution wake turbulence my ass! What did he think the engineless gearless emergency aircraft was going to be able to do in the event the ginormous wake turbulence from a 757 hit it?? Here's an idea, hold the damned 757 a few minutes or offer the Aztec another low pass so you can arrange to stop departures for a few minutes.

    • @oli.2844
      @oli.2844 7 лет назад +3

      Kathryn Slye Maybe they should of diverted the Aztec to a nearby airport instead of STOPPING ALL TRAFFIC. Pretty dumb in my opinion.

      I think the thinking was that with the hydraulic leak they could lose access to flaps or elevators, and they would rather them just set it down nearby.

    • @williamferguson284
      @williamferguson284 7 лет назад +35

      loss of hydraulics would not cause the elevators to lose function in the the Piper as all controls are cabled to the yoke and rudder. Flaps in an older Piper are controlled by a lever on the floor in between the front seats, though I am not sure with this aircraft so they could be hydraulic. Most hydraulic landing gear systems are hydraulic up and gravity down after releasing the locks. If the locks don't release though then its gear up time. Stopping the engines was a good idea as well since that way you don't have to tear down the motors after a prop strike. As for not diverting the Piper to another airport that is stupid, as an aircraft with an emergency has right of way over all other aircraft. The 757 could have been taxing out and waiting already. Noticed how the Piper made multiple flyovers. Technically the airport would still be open. But as soon as the plane belly landed then the runways were closed. After initial response the airport could allow ATC to open unaffected runways back up to traffic. The caution wake turbulence call is require anytime a B757 takes off or lands as it has nasty wake turbulence.

      I don't know the details of this incident but they usually say that if you're landing within 3 minutes of the other plane. So it probably wasn't a big deal.

    When they said that maintenance wanted them to make a low pass i was thinking "what are they gonna do? Jump up there and pull it down?" But their idea of looking at it to see what they could figure out was a much better idea

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb 5 лет назад +3

      Not just what they can do but to assess the status. Gear could be partially down (without the crew being aware), which would've been a disaster for a wheels up landing. Better make sure that when you're coming in for good, you've got everything in order.
      And in any case a group of extra eye sets watching for the plane from outside can never hurt.
