    I bought a couple dozen ghost shrimp for my guppy tank. One of them was bigger than the rest and kind of brown, but I figured it was just a darker morph or something. Then half the shrimp and four of my guppies died over the course of 2 weeks. My tank is very heavily planted, so it took me forever to catch the brown "ghost" but once I did and put it in another tank, I've had no deaths.

    Ghost shrimp are normally peaceful. Whisker shrimp are super aggressive. They look almost the same except whisker shrimp have a banding on them while ghost shrimp are mostly clear, no color nor spots. Pet stores sometimes name them as the same thing, but they are infact different. Just make sure to properly tell if your shrimp are truly ghost shrimp, because whisker shrimp will attack almost any fish you have in your tank. Ghost shrimp will eat dead fish, but they normally never attack.

    My dwarf puffer and sparkling gourami hunts even the bigger ghost shrimp (my dwarf puffer and sparkling gouramis grew up together). They work as supplementary food in my display tank.
    My Japanese Ricefish who are docile (and smaller than them) don't seem to be bothered by the ghost shrimp at all - they even steal or squabble over what my ghost shrimp finds.
    I learned that they also can jump out of the tank no matter how shallow or deep the water is from the edge of the tank. I find dried up shrimp outside the tank whenever I do chores around the tank.

    • @malnutritionboy

      My ghost shrimp hunts my adult guppies not even kidding. I thought the fishes died due to stress or something so i used the test kit but everything was almost 0ppm. Then to my horror i saw a tiny ghost shrimp drag my adult female guppy by the tail and started eating it alive. Then by the time i was able to get it out half of the head was gone and all the fins chewed off. The fish was still alive and flipping around so i ended its misery. They even bothered my baby bristlenose pleco but i quickly removed it. The tank is a 50 gallon btw only about 10 ghost shrimp 4 guppys that all died. Like wtf dude

    I had a pretty bad infestation of Malaysian Trumpet Snails(MTS) at one point as they like to burrow and uproot all my S.Repens. I read somewhere that Ghost Shrimps hunt and kill snails. I decided to get some and see what happens. It turns out they did a pretty good job of hunting all the MTS within a week. Later when I wanted to clear them out, I made a DIY shrimp trap from a plastic bottle with some fish food in it and got rid of all the Ghost Shrimps!

      They could have killed them. Several people in the comments here have similar stories, and I've lost a few medium sized guppies myself to these shrimp. Even caught one shrimp hunting one day, standing up on top of a plant trying to swipe at and grab some of the smaller guppies. People at the LFS say that ghost shrimp shouldn't be able to catch and kill a healthy fish and that they're mostly peaceful. But, I have seen otherwise. The neocardinia, amano, and other similar varieties are better in my opinion. I've had better luck with them not being aggressive or eating things I don't want eaten, but those varieties tend to be more pricey where I'm at and them being smaller and more peaceful, they also get eaten more often. Around 10$ea. for assorted rainbow shrimp from my local petco makes for some very expensive fish food. Vs 39¢ for ghost shrimp.
      TLDR; yes. Ghost shrimp can be jerks.

      I saw one ghost shrimp catch a Barbodes barb at the tail. The fish was almost 2x the size of the shrimp and VERY powerful swimmers, but it had to struggle a bit to get free of those deceptively thin claws.

    I know this is an Old Post but there are different species of ghost shrimp some will get bigger with longer legs these ones are definitely predatorial and can kill small fish like baby angelfish Guppies and other live bears

    Well we can't just have an aquarium and expect not for the inhabitants to catch a snack if they can. That is nature. Not like we can put a sign in the tank and expect that to work.

    hey, so i recently got a betta fish, i want to get him a friend + something to go with him in his tank. but im worried the ghost shrimp will eat him, or he will eat the ghost shrimp. is it safe?

    • @patcheslove55
      @patcheslove55 3 года назад

      There is NO way a ghost shrimp can eat an adult betta fish. Your betta may eat the shrimp may not. Usually ghost shrimp are cheaper so if he eats one then he got a special treat and if he doesn’t then maybe try adding a few more. Keep in mind that it’s not good to add too many as if your betta does chose to eat them then he can overeat and become constipated. Also, bettas are less likely to eat ghost and Armano shrimp then others because they are mostly clear/lighter in color.
