It's funny how this movie recontextualizes the beginning of A New Hope. It explains how exasperated Vader is when he boards Leia's ship. "A diplomatic mission? Your men were shooting at me above Scarif five minutes ago!"
Awesome retcon of the first scroll anyone ever saw. Even George hadn’t fully conceptualized this part of the story.
@@Suddenly-Eggs it doesn’t retcon the scroll though. The opening of A New Hope describes basically exactly what happens.
@@Jabberwocky415 maybe I used the wrong term. But you get what I’m saying right?
@@Suddenly-Eggs I think I understand what you mean yes. And I agree it’s a brilliant way to lead into a decades old movie.
@@Suddenly-Eggs recontextualizes is what you're lookin for, friend :) im glad the non-saga-film media does this, obviously a big one being Clone Wars
Fun fact: director Gareth Edwards came up with the name for Scarif after going to a Starbucks during pre-production. When the Barista asked what his name was, he lazily answered "S'Gareth". The barista misheard him however, and wrote "Scarif" on his cup instead.
This sounds made up, but I don’t know enough about Starbucks baristas to dispute it.
@@Jabberwocky415 starbucks baristas are well known for mishearing names and writing the wrong thing though lol
@@Jabberwocky415 It isn't made up dude.
@@J_C_CH Sorry I was trying to be funny. It’s a meme of a quote from Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Scariff is an Island 13 miles ESE of Skellig Michel (the Island where the Jedi Temple in the Sequel Trilogy was filmed)
"Vader is scary as heck!"
Rogue One was the beginning of his image rehabilitation.
Yet incompetent.
In episode 4, the rebel leaders mentioned how many died trying to obtain those plans. But until this film, that line never really meant that much in the overall plot. This brought the desperate struggle of the rebel alliance into focus.
Why do people keep making the mistake of using line from Return of the Jedi? All that is mentioned in A new Hope. "Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you?"-Vader
@@brucechmiel7964 It's confusing on how people keep messing that up.
@@brucechmiel7964 Though it would be cool to get another one about all those Bothans who did die.
@@cinemagoose Yeah. But I’ll just stick to the Shadows of The Empire novel.
This is definitely my favorite Star Wars movie. I love how it’s so different and doesn’t follow the lives of space wizards😂
This I agree with 100%. Story of the hard struggle for freedom and the sacrifices made as the rebellion raged on. also great Mads Mikkelsen acting!
If that's how you feel. To me, those "space wizards" have ALWAYS been central to the story.
@@blackeychan1970 ik but it’s nice to get a break from them
@@ggCA07 - That's certainly your prerogative. Me, I can't get enough of them.
@@ggCA07 [Edited for grammar and clarity] I see where you both are coming from. On the one hand, the story of the Jedi and Sith, and the Skywalkers, and the Rebellion Is the heart of why we love Star Wars. In a way, it Is Star Wars.
But... On the other hand, we've only had hints of The War aspect of Star Wars; the leaders of The Rebellion speaking in past tense about those who died to help free the galaxy and gave everything to stop The Empire and restore freedom to the worlds and beings suffering under Vader and the Emperor's rule.
Through Rogue One, we can see a small part of the great cost The Rebels always talk about, making it real instead of a distant occurrence we have no connection to.
We connect to it now.
Best of all, there's no reason to argue about it because one gives us the connection and the other gives us the context. We're well covered and it all serves/supports The Story. And there is So much more to explore and experience. That's the best part
The thing I most love about this movie is that, too often when talking history, we always hear about the Luke Skywalkers, Princess Leia's, Darth Vaders, Emperor's, etc. But their storied actions in Star Wars, and in reality are made possible by the sacrifice of the "little people". Rogue One sacrificed everything so Leia and Luke even had a chance. Star Wars too often overlooks or brushes over the real sacrifice of the people history forgets. Virtues don't belong exclusively to the epic hero.
Rogue One A Masterpiece under the radar
I've seen every Star Wars movie in the theater since the first one, and Rogue One is my favorite. And to think, they cut and re-shot a lot of this because the studio felt it was "too dark." The visuals, the storytelling...it's just a fantastic film.
Yet still bad.
It was an amazing movie, glad I gave it a chance and went IMAX 3D with it because it paid off especially during the space battle scene which had a lot of depth.
@@andymiller6661 only for you but I can respect your opinion
@@thegiftedfire3470 Only legitimately.
@@andymiller6661 No, that's still just your opinion. Just yours.
Yes, Red and Gold Leader were in A New Hope. They used some unused takes from that film to insert them into this film.
The actor who played Red Leader died before this movie was made, but the actor who played Gold Leader did record some new lines of dialogue for the film. Basically, any time you hear Gold Leader speak off-screen ("Hit that opening!") it's new dialogue.
Andor is incredible so far, not just a great Star Wars show but a great show in general!
"This is gonna be a fun watch"
Ah, fun. Yeah. Rogue One. Such fun.
I believe they filmed the farm scene at the beginning in Iceland, which explains the black sand and how beautiful and green it is.
Anytime you need a beautiful and otherworldly set piece, film in Iceland.
Loved Rogue One! The best of the new Star Wars movies by far. The Andor series is really really good so far too 👏🏻
I agree. Its the best star wars movie since ROTS and i think this movie is actually better than that. Its fanbase is the reason Andor even exist.
The coolest part about this is just how real all the acting in the battle scenes. All of the actors went through a sort of boot camp, and extreme attention to detail was paid to tactics and the like as well. It's such a beatiful film in so many ways, wish the rest of the disney era could be this good
Saw was a complex and storied character. He appears in Clone Wars, Rebels, Fallen Order, Andor and his end here.
I remember when I saw this in cinema and Carrie Fisher had just passed away and seeing Leia on screen in CGI just broke me I wept for a good while. Such a good movie one of my absolute favourites from the whole franchise.
RIP To Carrie Fisher
Whenever I finish watching this, I always have to watch the first few minutes of 'Star Wars' with the Tantive trying to outrun the Destroyer, just for closure, lol.
That was a fun watch with the two of you. Stay healthy!
Supposedly "Andor" is going to have two seasons but K2S0 will appear in the second one. The first season is about how Cassian joins the Rebellion as the Rebel Alliance stops being a bunch of independent cells and they start becoming a single organization, and the second season will be about his life as a Rebel operative leading to the events of "Rogue One," which would include how he captured and reprogrammed K2S0.
It's not a stature of Luke or Obi-Wan. It's just a statue of a Jedi Knight on the planet Jedah.
Yaven was the rebel base in A New Hope
Vader’s hallway is the best scene in Rogue One!!
How is him being incompetent the best?
@@andymiller6661 because in original trilogy they hinted how scary he is but never really showed it, even on episode 3 and even when butchering the children apprentices it was iff screen but here they showed us how lethal Vader was in his prime (and i do mean as Vader, not as Anakin) and why people feared him.
@@galadballcrusher8182 Cool story. He's still very clearly an incompetent person who's also a mass murderer.
not just the best scene in Rogue One, but possibly the best scene in all of Disney-era Star Wars
This star wars movie is a pearl ..... love it. I can watch the final Darth Vader scene 1000 times and still get goosebumps.
Yet still bad.
Why watch Vader being incompetent?
@@andymiller6661 You seem to have a real issue with Vader, who was in this film for 5 minutes. Let me ask you, when was Vader ever competent? His entire history on the screen is one of failure. He will continuously screw up and allow the rebels to narrowly outwit him and escape for several more years until his eventual death. His unsuitability for the job leads to the very downfall of the Empire.
@@sdfried4877 The time on screen is irrelevant. People seem to love him for some reason, even though he's not a good villain.
@@andymiller6661 He’s a great villain. He’s a murderous black suited boogeyman. The more we learn about him over the years, however, the worse he gets. You said he was incompetent here. He only arrived on the scene as the rebels were leaving and he does catch Leia shortly after this and delivers her to Tarkin. At this stage, he was explicitly following the orders of Tarkin. Even the Millennium Falcon escaping was Tarkin’s idea. Vader’s first real failure was his piss poor shooting at Red 5, which resulted in the destruction of the Death Star and, for some reason, a massive promotion for Vader. After being given his own fleet, all mistakes were on him regardless of how many officers he choked to death. The basic point I am making here is that he is more competent here than he is in The Empire Strikes Back, where he kicks a lot of ass but walks away empty-handed.
@@sdfried4877 Haven't seen him do anything to make him a great villain. When in Rogue One did Tarkin give him orders to let them escape?
Wasn't the falcon escaping Vader's idea?
So many of the main characters died in R1 was because they weren’t mentioned in A New Hope. Or else they would have to make additions to it … again.
But the other thing was each main character had a job to do and didn’t die until they completed their job. Even the crew of the Hammerhead pushed the Destroyer thru the shield before they were destroyed.
The whole suicide mission plot is certainly no stranger to cinema. Rogue One is kinda like Star Wars meets The Dirty Dozen.
As I left the theater, I was calling it "The Dirty Dozen saves Private Ryan from the Guns of Navarone."
the black sands and such, also heavily used for Death Stranding, is Iceland. This scene specifically the southern black sands (volcanic and glacial-runoff/rivers territory). I think the mountain they use (background of the homestead and the hideout mini-bunker (cool concept) location) is Hjörleifshöfði (said to be haunted, it's the only mountain in a relatively wide flat sandy (green and black) area on the southern coast).
there was a team here filming and such for death stranding to use it to generate not-Iceland but a sorta "young-ish earth" looking wilderness terrain. So there's no IRL location IN that game, per se (afaik) but it was used to generate this sort of terrain (volcanic "still growing" sorta theme).
This one was so cool. Seeing that hallway scene in the theatre was friggin amazing. Every single person in the theatre was terrified.
Yet still bad.
Seeing Vader being incompetent was amazing?
@@andymiller6661 actually quite competent. The only one who keeps repeating everywhere "incompetent" is you. And compared to ANY other imperial (except maybe the emperor)he was the most competent at his time. Do you think anyone else (except Palpatine) could have done better in that hallway? Give us a name otherwise...
@@galadballcrusher8182 Just because I'm the only one saying it in itself doesn't mean that I'm wrong. If Vader is some super badass, all powerful, will bring balance to the Force Sith Lord, then it would have been nothing for him to use the Force to knock everyone in the hall to the wall or floor, then get the plans and leave. But alas, he did an elaborate entrance and took his sweet ole time.
So if the Empire's most competent person is that, then it's no wonder they lost.
@@andymiller6661 still way more competent than the ones he was facing, he went solo through circa 20 people as if they were nothing, is just by time he done with that, the Corellian corvette had gotten away. So you may want to call it incompetence (feel free, not my problem i can not fix ur problem, time may manage it as you mature, no idea but to me you sound like an instant gratification gen z kiddy who thinks if you make best effort and show competence then results should reflect it, but there are a lot if factors beyond your performance out there and the older one gets the more one realises it), still everyone else understands that sometimes life and circumstances aren't in your favour (the force works in mysterious ways).
@@galadballcrusher8182 What was his objective: killing rebels or getting the plans?
What was their objective?
I'm not gen Z, but my generation has nothing to do with his incompetence.

Forest Whitaker is so good at being this bedraggled old cyborg that I have to watch "Arrival" again after this movie to remind myself that he wasn't at death's door in 2016.
The tank is actually a very real (and very thinly disguised) vehicle. It's an ex-British army Alvis Stormer armoured fighting vehicle flat bed variant, normally used for carrying the 'Shielder' minefield laying system.
That tank was only one in Star Wars so far that had tracks/treads.
@@SuperStreetWarrior not really, the droid army had tracked units. NR-N99 Persuader tank droids were seen a lot at the Battle of Kashyyyk in Revenge of the Sith, they were certainly tracked too.
I actually didn’t notice the CG tarkin until my brother pointed it out.
I wouldn’t be surprised the opening scene was filmed around Vik in South East Iceland. It’s know for the black volcanic sandy beaches and I will say miserable rainy weather. It’s beautiful, but really wet.
Pretty sure it was shot in Iceland in parts of this movie.
Gold Leader and Red Leader were taken from the original Star Wars film. It was an homage to them. But then there was... that one Red Five... and now you know why "Red Five" was available for Luke when he joined Rogue Squadron.
And yes, Rogue Squadron was renamed, from just Red Squadron, because of Rogue One.

I'm so glad you guys are watching Andor afterward.
Rogue One is the last movie I saw with my mother, when she was still alive. She loved it. Hold a special place in my heart for this reason.
You guys look as great as ever. Hope y’all are doing well ❤️
Carrie Fisher passed away shortly after this film opened in theaters. I saw it in theater two weeks after she passed away. I had a crush on her from the age of 4 1/2 when I saw the original Star Wars in theater in 1977. When Leia turned around and said, "hope", I wept.
I lost it when the door opened and I saw her shroud and I realized that they were going there.
@@Theomite I held it til I saw her face. I knew it was a different actress, but seeing HER face on this young actress tore me up. I have seen the behind-the-scenes for this, and they picked a great actress for the stand-in. She had similar enough facial bone structure that the computerized face fit like a glove. People who complained about her CGI are just too critical. Just celebrate the fact they brought her in, tying the beginning of Episode IV nicely too the end of Rogue One.
K2-S0, the droid, is the character with the most personality in the entire movie. 😂
Great reactions to Rogue One, Canadian Kids!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Chicken soup broth is very good for a cold. There are at least 2 seasons of Andor, so they could bring back characters that were in this film. 91 year old james Earl Jones has signed over his voice rights to Disney so that Darth Vader will live on.
Alan Tudyk, who played Hogan Washburn, aka Wash, in Firefly/Serenity, was K-2SO.
Fun trivia, when K2 smacked Andor in front of the stormtroopers, Alan accidentally struck the guy really hard. His apology was real, and Diego (Andor) was holding his hand in front of his face because he was laughing and trying to hide it. Rewatch that moment and you'll see his grin behind his hand. 😁😂
Location of the black beach is Iceland. Had to opportunity to be there… amazing
One of the things Disney has actually done right since purchasing Lucasfilm. This movie makes reading the opening scroll in Episode 4 have much more feeling. Mon-Mothra was a Republic/Imperial Senator, that was a leader in the Rebellion.
This was a good movie. Loved how they tied it into the original trilogy. They had originally had everyone survive at the end cause they thought Disney wouldn’t like them killing so many of the main characters at the end. They were told they needed to have a different ending to tie into the original trilogy like they made it clear that the pilot Red Five died leaving the spot open for Luke to take. Also sending all of Blue Squadron down to Scarif and not make it out to explain why there wasn’t a Blue Squadron in the Original Trilogy (they couldn’t use the color blue a lot back then due to the use of blue screen technology. Check out R2 when he’s in the X-Wing and his blue parts look black so to not interfere with the blue screen special effects). A funny part to watch is when K2 slaps Cassian on Jedha. If you watch Cassian closely he’s trying not to laugh cause that part was improvised.
Yet still bad.

Visualize the size of the big Star Destroyer. Then do the same with the gigantic Death Star that dwarfs it (just like you said) and then imagine the data it would take to have a detailed plan of that thing.
That’s why the file is that size.
Reaction to Rogue One and a shout-out to The Expanse, yes, I am happy! One of the best live action Star Wars in Rogue One and one of the best shows ever made in The Expanse.
Saw Gerrera was a young rebel fighter in The Clone Wars CG series. all those decades of battles took their toll on him.
"I am what you made me 53:19"
This was such a different Star Wars movie and the best live action example of how the franchise could expand at that time. It paved the way for series like Mandalorian.
Grand Moff Tarkin is Peter Cushing. Fun fact. In the original movie, A New Hope, he requested in his contract to wear his slippers. He is never shown from the ankles down.
Pretty sure it wasn't in his contract. They made him boots that didn't fit.
Watching in release order is ALWAYS better.
Did you guys ever react to ANDOR? I loved it, and after this I was so excited to see your reactions, but I don't see them anywhere on your channel. I hope you'll share them if you did react to the show, since it was just fantastic. Thanks for another great reaction, meanwhile!
So amazing of you to notice Red and Gold leader from A New Hope
The scene in the beginning on the black sand is in Iceland place called Reynisfjara :)
Gareth Edward’s the director started his career for many many years as a visual effects artist. So that’s why it looks so good.
The opening scene on the black beach was filmed somewhere in Iceland.
Remember Yavin? We were taken there way back in the first movie. It was the location of the rebel base in that jungle setting.
Rather than Jin's father, he (Saw Guerrera) was the one who rescued her from the hiding pit, and subsequently raised her.
Did you notice at around 10:45 that the commander of the original Death Star is the same guy as in 1977, and hasn't aged a day, made possible by the recent technology where a young face can be "pasted" over another's face. They did the same thing at the end with Leia's/Carrie Fisher's older face.
At 16:55, not bad fighting for a blind guy, huh?
He doesn't know Leia, so he's speaking of Jinn.
Scarif was filmed in the Indian Ocean country of Seychelles (SAY-shells).
Yes, both Red and Gold leaders were in Chapter 4.
Episode 4, not Chapter 4.
It was mentioned in one of the Star Wars films about the sacrifice made to get the plans to them ...... this was the story of that sacrifice.
Are you referring to this scene?
ruclips.net/video/k_4_NNHRjb4/видео.html
Mon Mothma mentioned “many Bothans died to get this information” but she was referring to the second Death Star. The only reference to Rogue One was in the crawl of Episode 4
@@bryanfoster362 It always blows my mind that people somehow mess that up.
If I'm not mistaken the opening scene with the black sand is in Iceland.
The actress that Played Mon Mothma here is the same one from deleted scenes from Episode 3.
Gold Leader was in Ep4 as was one of the other pilots, The Ghost from Star Wars Rebels is also present in the battle, and the tannoy called for General Syndulla (Hera)
When the rebel fleet drops out of hyperspace over Scarif, the Ghost ship from Star Wars Rebels TV show can be seen. Also the character Hera Syndulla from Star Wars Rebels name can be heard at the Yavin IV base.
i know im late here but ive always wondered how they can have giant space travelling ships and technology out of this world... but as soon as a character looks through a set of binoculars the screen is blurry/ old
It wasnt until recently that I noticed Chopper is in this movie and over the intercom you can hear someone paging Hera.

Of course it looks like the Original Trilogy, it ends literally a couple of hours before the beginning of A New Hope. They worked hard to add in bits from Red and Gold Squadron's attack on the Death Star in Ep. 4 to this to make it REALLY authentic. Sadly, all of Blue Squadron was shot down on Scarif, hence why they're not in Ep. 4 :(
The red haired lady on Yavin is Mon Mothma, a Senator and the civilian leader of the Rebel Alliance. She wasn't in Ep. 4, but she was in Return of the Jedi.
Chirrut Imwe is played by Donnie Yen, a martial arts master in a lot of wuxia films

The opening scene was shot east of the small town of Vík in the south of Iceland.
How big can the complete technical file of an object 160k in diameter and Thousands of levels plus every specification, for every part, for every system, by every manufacture? We are looking into the Exa or Penta range - hug honking files and folders!
Those opening landscapes were filmed in Reynisfjara, Iceland. And the spellchecker is really pissed at me. 😉
Lot of people criticized the CGI of Peter Cushing (Tarkin) and Carrie Fisher (young Leia), but I think creators wanted that way similar to original: New Hope in which was made in 1977. Then software gotten improved since 2016.
I love Rogue One!
I doubt if the statue was of any Jedi we'd recognize. The Jedi order had been around for literally THOUSANDS of years. So they give you the idea that some ancient Jedi (or simply the order itself) was memorialized with a giant statue which has long since crumbled.
Justin, to answer your question, yes that X-Wing pilot in the battle scene was from Star Wars: A New Hope. They used archive footage. 43:44

Gold/Red Leaders were in ANH. They found old unused footage and put them in since it makes sense with the timeline. Also Red 5 going down since Luke becomes the new one.
This is my favorite Star Wars movie. That's why I'm having a hard time watching Andor b/c I already saw his last stand.....
Bad thing is they do episode 6 shows that in the scene in Jabba's palace where 3PO and R2 get assigned to new jobs. It shows both the old translator droid as well as the ammo droid scream in pain more than a few times in that scene. In the clone wars series it also shows they can understand they aren't going to survive and even show fear of that.
The actor who portrayed Tarkin (an actual person on set, same as with the actor for Leia) also portrayed the imperiused Minister of Magic in HP The Deathly Hallows.

The only worthy star wars movie from Disney ❤️
If I recall correctly, the black and green land was filmed in Iceland.
Blows my mind anytime people try to claim Tarkin looks bad. It's absolutely perfect. And it's not 100% CGI. It was a dude named Guy Henry and then CGI'ed his face.
The cgi on Leia looks way worse
If you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.
No, it’s not. It looks extremely distracting
I think it only appears distracting because Peter Cushing is dead and then they go and recreate him, which can be disturbing
I wouldn't say he looks bad, but his face is very obviously CGI.

Lucas originally wanted red squadron to be blue but when they tried shooting the blue color did not work with the camera being used so it had to be switched to a color that did. They brought blue squadron into this movie to honor the original idea and it also explains why not a single blue squadron fighter was there in the battle of Yavin.

Yes Gold leader and Red leader both were in the battle of Yavin. they used footage not used in that movie for this one
Rogue One is my favorite star wars film and is the darkest Star Wars film and really gives off alot of War Vibes!
Tarkin isn't completely CG. There's an actor voicing him and is in the uniform on set. They based it all on his performance.
So... you didn't react to the Andor episodes? Explored your channel but there's nothing there - That's a shame.
