Carrie Fisher died just 11 days after the release of this film. :( She apparently did get to see the scene of Leia at the end and liked it.
I was pleasantly surprised that they brought back both Red and Gold Leader from "A New Hope" for the battle scenes. Some of that was just unused takes from that film. The actor who played Red Leader had passed away, but they got the actor who played Gold Leader to record some new dialogue, nearly forty years later. Pretty much any time you hear him off-camera (i.e. "Hit that opening!"), that's new.

What most people miss with the Vader hallway scene is that it's a microcosm of the movie’s message in a nutshell: A seemingly unstoppable force was thwarted by a determined group of faceless heroes who gave their lives for a sunrise that they’ll never see.
No matter how cool or menacing Vader looked in that scene, the chosen one and Sith Lord was beaten by a group of determined and faceless nobodies who prevented him from getting what he wanted and enabled the eventual defeat of the Empire and the defeat of the Sith.

I watched this movie the first weekend of its release as well; it was the first Star Wars movie since A New Hope that left me so elated. The ending that blended directly to A New Hope had been a successfully kept secret.
Now, you _must_ watch the Andor series. It is perhaps the best Star Wars writing of all time. You might think you don't need to see a Rogue One prequel, but you do. And it also contains Mon Mothma's backstory...which is far more dramatic than you might think.

I'm German, 62 years old and a fan since 1977. Over many years the quality of the films plummeted. This film reminds me of the "good old" days.
Not a plot that has to be suitable for 3 year olds. The heroes are all killed on their mission.
Nobody can be brought back to life by some stupid nonsense. Dead remains death. No endless kiss between the two main actors, no longing gaze and subsequent marriage with lots of flowers. Just the stark reality. No cinema for 10 - 12 year olds. Darth Vader is at his absolute best. Dear Anakin (Prince Charming of romantic dreams) was never held responsible for his actions. It was always someone else's fault, the Emperor, eating too much sun on the head and much more. Now it turns out that the murder of the young men in the Jedi Palace was not a one-time "slip" by a confused person. but the act of an absolute killer. And it continues here. He would also have sent hundreds or thousands from life to death if they had stood in the way of his task. There just weren't enough victims, in terms of numbers. He was finally unmasked. An ice cold mass murderer, without a single positive character trait. Disney, of all companies, managed to send one of the best Star Wars films ever into the race. An excellent film with excellent actors

I knew you'd like Rogue One. I liked that u named Tarken by name, many RUclipsrs don't. Yes, as a Death Star story, it wld hv bn weird if he wasn't there. I believe Rogue One was the most "war like." I liked how Ep 1, 2 & 3 got into the politics. But, Rogue One showed gritty suffering & reality of how ugly (& complex/blurry) war is. It wasn't the "clean" story of simply heroes & villains. Vader scene at end is amazing. Shout out to "Blue Squadron." After getting thru shield gate & it closing behind 'em, it was a one-way mission for them also. Rogue One is top tier Star Wars.

The Mandolorian is also really cool in showing us the galaxy post empire and the struggles that still persist. But we probably wouldn’t have had either series without this movie. This film was hit with major reshoots around the ending of the film. I'm curious whether Disney wasn't happy with how the cast died out. If you didn't notice the entire main cast ends up dying from explosions. So I'm curious how they died before the reshoots. There was also a great video by Film Theory channel about what he predicted the fates of the Rogue One team. Before this film came out of course. I honestly kind of wish that Film Theory came true, because it would of made for a far darker ending as it would imply the entire Rogue team was captured, tortured/turned or were convinced in one way or another to switch sides.

It made you invested, and connected for the new cast of rebel heroes, as well as the empire villains of the movie. Strong character development between the cast members, which makes you care so deeply, for them. Sad yet, Epic. Compelling & Courageous. Despairing but, Hopeful. Here they only fired from one reactor of the death star, so it only had "limited" destruction...still impressive. Alderan was the first test of the "full power" of the Death Star.
The best of the Star Wars movies in my opinion. My step-daughter was working for Lucasfilm when this came out and got to see the reveal to the employees. In that version they used the crawl from Episode IV, but when they got to the part about stealing the plans they froze it and said, "This is their story."

Glad you got to check this one out! Between this and Andor, you have some of the finest Star Wars media of their time. Shame the rest of the shows/movies weren't given the same care. Rogue One had endured a lot of production changes (I think LadyKnighttheBrave covered this well), but it's not really noticeable.

Can we get a shout-out to the Hammerhead corvette? A ship design that once was the backbone of the Old Republic, before the Sith corrupted it beyond recognition (it had its issues before, but the Sith wrecked it from the shadows). Doing their job with their signature tactic - ramming a bigger ship.

It's not the same ship it just uses the design of the old republics ship

Remember, the death star uses a single reactor blast in this movie on jedha, thats why it only blows up a small portion of it. (Alderaan in A new hope was a full reactor blast) anyways tho, great reaction.

"Your Highness. The transmissions we received. What is it that they've sent us?"
    "Hope."
    RIP Carrie Fisher. 😢
The ONLY Disney era Star Wars movie worth a damn. The rest are utter garbage. Rogue One gets better every time I watch it.
Fun Fact: Alan Tudyk plays the droid K-2SO through motion capture technology. Tudyk previously played the robot character Sonny in I, Robot (2004).
Red Gold Leaders Fact: Gareth Edwards and his creative team discovered some old film canisters while rummaging around the Lucasfilm warehouses. When he asked what they were, an employee said they were old Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) footage. The discovery led to the inclusion of unused material featuring Red Leader (Drewe Henley) and Gold Leader (Angus MacInnes) in this movie.
Attention To Detail Fact: Darth Vader's appearance in this film is meticulously patterned after his look in the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). While Vader's chest plate is uncovered in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi (1983), his costume initially had his Sith robes draped over his shield, as well as red lenses in the eye holes of the mask. Considering this film takes place mere days before the original film, the costume designers recreated Vader's look down to the last detail. This movie was made with love by actual Star Wars fans.

Another epic reaction! imo, Rogue1 is 3rd in my list of StarWarz faves, after epi 4&5. Thanx Kahla!!!
The others, for me at least, are ALL disappointments.
This film makes me sad too, cuz it proves a great SW's epi CAN still be made into a great ride, but Disney (and Lucas before them) gave up after TheEmpireStrikesBack, until this wonderful standalone...

I was surprised how much I liked this film when it came out. I thought it was a fun film that had a great lead into "A New Hope". You really care about the characters and feel their wins/loses. And of course.... we Vader junkies got to see what we had been wanting to see since the 1970s lol. The all powerful Sith unleashed and cutting through everyone like they were younglings in a Jedi temple.

I wonder if you could do a rewatch of the original trilogy and do an extended critique and review of that, then a rewatch of the prequels in the same way (or... maybe watch it with a friend who didn't see it yet) with all the things that came together for you. No need to if course... just a thought.
