Many moons ago before Gavin was famous was handed a promo copy of Chariot. I worked in the NYC nightclub scene and we got those ALL THE TIME. I usually just threw them out but for some reason Chariot made its way onto my cd shelf unopened. Fast forward almost a year later and I'm watching VH1 (back when they actually played music videos) and Chariot comes on. I'm like Chariot...Chariot..why does that sound familiar?? I ran to my rack, found the album, tore it open and played it.....daily for an entire year. His debut album became one of my all-time favorites and the only promo that I never threw out.
@@spartansrace4293 It actually wasn't a demo but the actual CD! The only difference was the marking on front: "For promotional purposes only. Not for resale." Other than that it was identical to his debut record which I would have gladly paid for it was that good!
The song is about getting back to your innocence and getting strength to make it through the hard times. Often we get wrapped up in the things of this world and forget what really matters. But how you interpret the song is up to you.
This song is pretty straightforward. About as subtle as a pink donkey. Nothing really here to "interpret". That's like if I said "Working For The Weekend" was about the Vietnam war.
I was a college student when this song came out in 2003, and the video resonated so much with me and cemented my belief that I should strive for what is true and genuine in life. I am a lawyer now and I still sing this song to myself whenever I find myself at a crossroads. Thank you so much for your music.
Does anyone else get a serious autumnal feeling from this song? It's probably that opening line about a maple tree, but this song always reminds me of autumn and strolling down a road covered in red and orange leaves.
This song released in late July of that year and it gained it's popularity and radio play over over those two months leading into fall. And it played a ton on the radio
Perfectly incapsulates stardom. Take young naive kid and promise him the world. But that life is vapid and unfulfilling. Then discard that kid once he’s outlived his usefulness. At least we got this 💎 out of it.
I had no business loving this song so deeply at 10yrs old😂 20yrs layer I'm still so in love and now sing it with my soon to be 10yr old daughter. Music is what makes life magical and people come together.
I think in this video, game is talking about the fake industry and not wanting to sell his soul to the devil. It's actually really deep. No wonder he's only worth 10 million and not 100 million like other singers he's better than. I respect him so much for that
Such a powerful song. I love the message near the end of the song. He see's the truth for what it is, as painful as it can be. But he chooses to walk his own way, the lonely walk to beauty and loneliness and wisdom.

I love the little things in this video that show it is all about controlling him as a musician. The blonde guide, blind guide? The fact that she kisses the girl, she is not interested in him romantically. All the controls, the man with the cash counts out some of it for Gavin, but keeps most of it. The other musicians at the party each have a girl in his lap, but all the girls know each other, i.e. they are all 'guides' too. And even the fans in the audience are fake projections. This is a very Meta music video with tons of symbolism. Fantastic.
This song is pure genius and the video speaks of the masks we metaphorically wear to fit in where we lost touch with ourselves trying to be everything people told us we are or have to be 🥰
Can't believe it's been 13 years since I first heard this song. It's not that well known here in England 🇬🇧 I love it and I think Gavin is so talented. 🙌
This song reminds me of my late sister, who I lost few 3 weeks ago 💔😭. We would always put this song on repeat and sing at the top of our voices. Now this are just good old cherished memories. I miss her so much💔😭
The opening melody Randomly popped in my head out of absolutely nowhere this morning. I’m so glad I found it after hours of googling and pulling my hair out.
I used to work at City Market 437 and this song would play at around 5:27 PM and get stuck in my head. Fun Fact: Gavin Degraw was 26 when this song came out (in the video). Crazy that 26 year olds today look like high schoolers, and Gavin looked like a full on man.
I love you Gavin I am going through a lot right now and I heard your song playing in a clothing store recently and have played it everyday since. Your music literally relieves my depression symptoms. Thank you for being such a natural talent and sharing your gift with us❤️

Based on what Gavin DeGraw said (according to Wikipedia), your interpretation seems to be correct.

And songwrite and play - his song writing is exceptional :)

Also the general color theme is autumnal. I’ve always felt this way too though

I'm a metalhead myself BUT as a musician there's something about this song I really like!
a few of his vocal lines give me chills!
it has that angst energy that really fits

He’s releasing a re-recorded version this week 😊
It only took 14 years for me to realize Gavin left the man hanging at 1:12. He saved it by shaking his bicep.
