  • In this video, we will dive into the details of these VA decision letter codes and phrases, explaining what they mean and how you can interpret them. We'll also provide some insider tips on navigating through these letters to help you better advocate for yourself or your loved ones.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides disability compensation to eligible veterans who have sustained injuries or illnesses during their military service. However, the process of applying for and receiving VA disability benefits can be complex and confusing, especially when it comes to understanding the decision letter codes and phrases used by the VA.
    Decoding Important Phrases for Veterans
When a veteran applies for disability compensation with the VA, their claim goes through a series of stages before a final decision is made. Once the decision is reached, a letter will be sent to the veteran detailing their claim's outcome.
Here are some of the key phrases you may encounter in a VA decision letter and what they mean:
"Service Connected (SC)": This phrase means that the VA has determined your disability is related to your military service. This is an essential phrase as it determines whether you are eligible for disability benefits.
"Not Service Connected (NSC)": On the other hand, this phrase means that the VA has determined your disability is not related to your military service. If this is the case, you will not receive any disability benefits for that particular condition.
"Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU)": This phrase means that even though your disability may not be rated at 100%, the VA has determined that it prevents you from securing and following a substantially gainful occupation. This determination is vital for veterans who are unable to work due to their service-connected disabilities.
"Combined Disability Rating (CDR)": The CDR is the total percentage of all your service-connected disabilities. A higher CDR means a higher level of compensation.
    Understanding Decision Letter Codes
In addition to key phrases, decision letters also contain codes that provide more detailed information about your claim's outcome. These codes can refer to various aspects of your case, including the assigned disability rating, effective date, and other decisions made by the VA.
Here are some commonly used decision letter codes and what they mean:
"SC": This code stands for "service-connected" and is used to indicate that the VA has determined your disability is related to your military service.
"NSC": This code stands for "not service-connected" and is used to indicate that the VA has determined your disability is not related to your military service.
"TDIU": As mentioned earlier, this code stands for Total Disability Individual Unemployability and indicates that the VA has determined you are unable to maintain substantial employment due to your service-connected disabilities.
"DCR": This code stands for combined disability rating, which reflects the total percentage of all your service-connected disabilities. It is used to determine the level of compensation you will receive.
Understanding VA decision letter codes and key phrases is crucial for veterans seeking disability benefits. By knowing what these codes and phrases mean, you can better advocate for yourself or your loved ones in the claims process. Remember to carefully review all decision letters, keep records of your correspondence, and don't hesitate to seek assistance if needed. With this knowledge, you can navigate through the complex world of VA disability benefits with confidence. So, be informed and take action!

I believe these nurses are cutting and paste the same finding. I received basically the same words on the decision for me. I also requested a higher level review of the situation. I hope I can finally win my case.

Just got DENIED today sleep apnea secondary to PTSD. Without a nexus. Should I get a nexus or do a HLR. But I also have chronic sinusitis. Wondering if I should go that route.

Thank you so much Combat Craig. I just subscribed yesterday and I have learned more in 12 hours than I have in 3 years by reading VA rules and regulations. I’m already telling my vet buddies about your channel. By the way, I was diagnosed with DDD and spinal stenosis in my lumbar and scheduled for an MRI this week with my private Orthopedic doctor. I am service connected for both my hips at 10 percent and will file secondary for all the things you mentioned in your DDD video. Thanks again!

I had the same verbiage for lower back pain. Had an undocumented in service event with a personal statement, current diagnosis, chronic conditions, 2 years of medical evidence from my physical therapist, and a Nexus letter from my chiropractor that stated more likely than not. Denied. Got the denial letter in 3 weeks. Decision letter said no documented in service documentation (duh), "silent" and "vague". It's in an HLR now. LoyalSource was the contractor. Avoid them.

Hi! Great video thanks for sharing ! I have a question regarding my ratings that may seem a little unrelated but any info would help: I was rated 100% PDRL for DOD and 100% for the va… medboarded and finaling out next week. I have received my proposed rating letter months ago but I don’t have my final award letter. I am going crazy trying to figure out if it’s p&t or what the likelihood of it being p&t would be. Do permanent DOD ratings at 100% usually coincide with a permanent VA rating at 100? Or are they unlikely to correlate ? I heard it could take months to receive my final award letter and the uncertainty is driving me insane.

Went to hospital last night for severe migraine with back pain. They refused to treat the migraine or even put it on the paperwork. How’s that work! Gave me a shot pain killers for back discharge paperwork no mention of migraine.😡😡😡

I hope my suggestion will get to the secretary, Mr. McDonough. It would be nice if veterans could go to a; Patience First, Urgent Care, Community Care or a Doctor that he/ she chooses. It seems like the deck is stacked against veterans walking through the door. I think this way would save time and money. The Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) could run though a database and tell the rater within minutes whether a veteran claims are denied or granted and it would be coming from a neutral party. Optum Serve/LHI gets paid from the VA and then they subcontract to a Nurse Practitioner, who then gets paid.
I have one more thing to add, how much is a C&P exam? I’m curious as to how much money is being spent weekly, monthly and yearly, because someone is getting rich off C&P exams whether it’s Optum Serve/LHI or Nurse Practitioner or both.
    Sincerely yours,

I'm lucky with my sleep apnea file. Told my primary VA doctor, and he put paper to sleep apnea department and got appointment and talk with tech. Did take home test and got approved. Now, with that sleep apnea machine, 50%.
