Really enjoy watching your videos Phillip. I'm retired from OTR trucking with Consolidated Freightways & Colonial Trailways in Mobile, Ala. - It's NOT a life for just anyone for sure. I'm 72 years old now & been retired from "The Road" for 10 years,... but still miss it. It's definitely a 'life-style' not suited for just anyone. I used to entertain myself (while driving) watching the interior rear-view mirror & looking back up the aisle ... just a little twitch on the steering-wheel & a very slight touch of the brakes,... watching 48 passengers heads "bobble" side-to-side & back & forth was quite entertaining !!! (It was sooo subtle that the passengers didn't even realize what I was doing). By the same token, I prided myself on being smooth enough when coming to a complete stop so as not to cause ANY head movement. After a couple-of-years, I decided that I didn't like the responsibility for the safety of 48 casino passengers & school children field trips for $10 per-hour !! (1990-92) & went back to Over-the-Road trucking. But during that two years of driving for Colonial Trailways Charter Service, I could sure tell you some stories. "The road goes on forever,... with or without you" - Savor it while it's enjoyable & you're able to do so safely. Steve / W5BIB
I agree with you on the Charter Bus gig. I drive a school bus and own my own business but I thought about making extra money driving the weekends. After interviewing with them I passed on the job as they were going to pay $12 an hour. WOW!! I made $14 an hour for extra trips for the school with a sponsor who would take care of the students. I thought there is no way in the world I would drive a Coach for less than a school bus.
This is one of the most important video you made if someone wants to learn what a Greyhound driver life is. I signed a contingent offer August 7, 2024! I cant wait to start.
Hey Phil thanks for the valuable info. I'm a driver out of Dallas and just plugged the board in mid Sept. I'm coming off a month long hold down and getting back on the board tomorrow. I never knew that notes were kept and that I could give dispatch options. I was getting burned out but I took a couple of hold downs for a break. I learned more about the extra baord in these 25 min than in the past 4 months since plugging the board. More importantly I learned that I need to change my attitude towards it and my job. Thanks for being the professional motorcoach operator that you are for you have truly helped me out.
Trueanics VVV could you explain "month log hold down" for us lay peps? I assume you went unavailable or something like it?. Also could you explain notes and options? You would be helping us who are thinking about coming "on-board"
@@keestrokes I was saying that I was able to get a temporary assignment and was unavailable for the extra board. As Phil said in the video the notes are locations, and assignments that I am willing to take. The notes are things like being willing to fly to a different city, willingness to take long difficult assignements, letting them know I need to be home by a certain time, to do I like to work or will I answer the phone. Phil did a great job explaining the notes and how they can benefit or turn out to be a disadvantage for an operator.
Hey Phillip, you must inform potential drivers that greyhound Will charge you 8700 dollars if you leave or are let go in the first 3 months. They will charge you 6500 dollars if you leave for what ever reason after 6 months. They will charge you 4500 dollars if you leave after 9 months and 2500dollars at the 12 month period. I just left the interview and was asked to sign a legal document that they can enforce to get their money. They said it is because they lose drivers too soon after leaving training. So the new drivers have to pay that price? In any industry this is a outrage. It is greyhound’s responsibility to work with newbies to keep them satisfied, not threaten them with future wage garnishment action recoup money they spent in learning greyhound policy besides cdl. Fortunately I have a job and didn’t quit a job before interview. I was ready for class and bonus of 10000 but no way was I going to predict the next year and be on the hook for 8700 dollars if it didn’t work out. I am glad things are working out for you and wish you the best. You provide a valuable service and should continue but make sure you let new employees know. I have my cdl and passenger endorsement so I cannot understand how it costs 8700 to train me greyhound ways. Thanks

Very good breakdown on the board. I was on it for 6 months and it was pretty exciting and I learned how to manipulate it in a month. Especially the DC to NYC run
Hey bud, just to let you know I have been following you on RUclips because I have had an interest in joining the Greyhound team. I put in my application and I've been hired on Greyhound in the Phoenix location. hope to see you out there someday, thanks for all the info you're putting on RUclips to help not just me, but others who may be questioning about working for the company make the decisions.
Great you survived the 90 day boot camp. Did your eating habits or quality of food suffer, like did you get most of your meals from vending machines or from the Greyhound dining room if they had one?
Great video, you make the process a little easier. My question is what meals do you eat over the road? I pack on pounds just looking at food so I'm curious about how you keep the weight off! I did the LH trucker thing, but the companies treat drivers like squat so I'll try GH, I could use the signing bonus.
You are so helpful I'm about to start my training soon what is the best advice you have for someone who has family at home but needs to make that money for real.
Interesting video and cool info.. im a city bus driver in Arizona, i do about 100 to 200 miles a day. 1 to 2 hours at a time in the seat. .. grey hound sounds like something u need to be single and or no kids lol
Driving across those vast stretches of nothingness out West must be one long exercise in boredom. But I would take it over a trip to NYC or ATL any day.
Phillip has your basic pay changed in much in your first 90 days, not including your new run route? And when the fly you, I assume most of the time it is on Southwest. Can you collect those "miles" for future SW flights? And if you quit can they charge you the price for getting your class B w/passenger endorsement if you quit within a certain amount of time?

Hey tim, located in orlando, fl. Getting ready to go to greyhound school training. Just got an email saying students have to pay reimbursement cost after finishing school. What is your perspective on this?
I don't know the official answer but I assume you have a credit card which you could use and greyhound would reimburse you for your expenses with your next pay cycle. I used to be a railroad engineer and at one stage they gave us all a company credit card but some guys were caught using the card for non company expenses. One union official was using the card for prostitutes. It took about 3 years to uncover his abuse of the union card. I guess it comes as no surprise he was fired. They withdrew the cards

So for the first 90 days with being on the extra board did it even equate to full time hours ???
