I'll give you my most important tip TM, I call it TTLCO..........Take The Lens Cap Off, before shooting! LOL!
All jokes aside, your EARL theory was the very reason I waited for Nikon to get their act together (Re. ML & AF) with the Z9 ;)
I am using the camera I always dreamed about which is the D850 😄 but I do encounter those low angle and AF problems. Sadly there is times where I wish I had a mirrorless.. 😅
Nonetheless batterylife and sturdyness are always great to have.. there is no perfect camera!
D850 is a legendary camera. Image quality is otherworldly. I still have 2 D850 at home. Yes, if I have to do low angle the hit rate is a lot lower :(
Tin Man, first many thanks for your nice pictures and for pretty useful teaching. I have a question about the stile of many your photos. I do follow Tim Flach for a long. And I came to observation that many his photos (dogs, birds) are looks similar to yours (as puffins from your examples, in terms of background). Tim works in studio, your photo from nature, but result is close. Is not? Can you comment, please?
Studio is a controlled environment where photographers can set up the ideal light and background for most visual impact. I believe this concept and strive to look for light and background that occur naturally in the wilderness because I am only interested in natural light and habitat where animals are free so it became my challenge.
QUESTION: I currently use Canon 70D and have a variety of lenses because I also enjoy landscape and some nature photography, but have a desire to improve wildlife shooting. If I spend the $$$ on the Canon R5 can I start with some of my lenses with an adapter before I jump into buying new lenses?
R5 is a very powerful camera especially for wildlife. If you can get an adaptor for your other lenses sure give it a try. But please check out this video of mine which talks about nailing sharp wildlife photos and the analysis of lenses so you know the pros and cons. ruclips.net/video/x0RR12OvOZA/видео.html
QUESTION... do you assign a back button like on DSLR for back button focus to use it for the eye focus or only use the shutter button as you've described.
For R5 I use the back button focus. You can use the traditional AF on the front button, and back button as animal eye tracking AF and the system becomes very powerful.
Love all your videos but I say this with the most respect, they took great wildlife pics in the 70's and 80's without all this technology. It can be done.
What a great useful video. I am also thinking of getting an external monitor to make seeing the screen easier. I herar good things about this: Portkeys P6 Camera Field Monitor 5.5. Anyone have any experience with this?
Canon live view on DSLR was pretty good. But nothing like Mirrorless
Yes I do like it but very true. Nothing like mirrorless. So lucky to live in this age to have mirrorless.
This might be a dumb question but I must ask, what do you mean by zone AF and how do I use it? I have a mirrorless.
Thanks for sharing your techniques on getting great backgrounds. I alway wanted to know why your backgrounds were so Dreamy.
I always look for background first. I don’t even click the shutter if the bg is not ideal because it’s much more difficult to tell a story without it. Lots of hard work lol.
You nailed it 🔨! This is exactly the biggest difference between my D850 and Z9, shooting at very low angle while using the flip out screen. Before I had to lay in the mud all the time. Especially with waterfowl things were very complicated when confronted with steep banks descending to the water surface. Now my current combo is Z9 and 500Fl ED on the FTZ adapter (+- TCs)…very happy with what Ive got 😊😊😊
Thanks for your kind message. Yes its a game changer. I think we can now get a few inches lower than laying flat on belly, with the flip screen without laying in mud. Plus we can move a lot quicker. So many impossible shots before became possible.
Nailed it. Couldn't agree more. My list of benefits are
-As you mentioned and is "gane changer" is The lcd for low angles (I too have got images I've wanted for years and just couldn't pull it off until the capabilities of the Z9)
- Silent shutter. My preferred style of photographing is being alone, hiding out and blended into the habitat. I love that my camera can now do that as well without a sound.
- Blackout free EVF
- Focus peaking in EVF. I use MF override quite a bit.
And after using the Z6, Z6ii and Z7ii, Having no rolling shutter in the Z9 was basically everything, for what/how I mostly photograph.
Wonderfully said Joe. Yes the silent shutter. I didn’t realize it until somebody else having digital SLR blasting with loud shutter noise sometimes even disturbing the animals. And no black out evf I think improves the AF even further. And I agree with your other points too.
I have the Z9 and Z7II. I got the 400 2.8 tc a month ago and preordered the z8 the day it was announced then booked a trip to Homer Alaska in July! I can’t wait to watch the bears!
I heard homer is a great place for bears. Hope you have a lot of fun. I’m going to Alaska early sept this year as I have other trips coming up. We are the lucky people in the z400 club lol.
Is Z6 still good camera?
Great video, I just purchased the Canon R5 and the 100-500 lens and have been taking photos I’ve never been able to take before, with the flip lcd screen I can now take low level shots just above the water line, since I have a terrible back condition this has helped me tremendously. PS: love your photography 👍
Exactly Jim! Congrats for the camera and lens I have the same one and its super sharp, fast focus and light weight. Getting super low angle is easier than ever.
Tin Man, beautiful pictures.I use the R5 as my primary wildlife camera and my R6 as a backup. My Canon R6 also has fantastic for eye tracking.
I heard the R6 also has good low light capability. Good combo!
What lenses did you start with Jose, and did you previously shoot Canon DSLR? Did you bring any of those lenses with you? Is the R6 a higher or lower level than the R5?
@@ChristineTabor Hello Christine, My first camera was a Canon 80D. Loved It! Then i was asked by some friends to help shoot weddings so I switched to Sony. Sony a 7 III, Then Sony A7R4. I then went with a friend to Yellowstone and we shot Wildlife photography and fell In love with Wildlife and landscape. I switched to the A9II and shot wildlife a few years with that camera. My friend let me borrow his R6 and I missed the using cannon and went back to Canon. I know just shoot Cannon. Lenses I use are the 24-105, 90mm macro for macro photography. For landscape I use the 15-35 as well as the 150-600. For wildlife I use 150-600 and the 600mmF4. The R6 has less megapixels than the R5 but its great in low light. Is the R6 a higher or lower level than the R5? Well yes, The R5 has a better LCD, The R5 has twice the resolution plus the R5 has better video specs. I love both cameras. You can’t go wrong with either.
I ordered a Z8 and am using a Z6ii now. The reason I am upgrading is the AF on the Z6ii is not very good at tracking moving subjects.
That’s awesome to hear. I’m eagerly waiting for the Z8 too. Ordered it last week. Yay. Seems like the perfect camera. Yea z6ii and Z7ii aren’t too good on eye tracking according to a friend of mine. Quite surprised because I thought it’s just all software to do eye tracking and that Nikon would put the same capability on their models.
@Tin Man Lee - Wildlife Photographer it's not just the software that needs optimized for Z6ii and Z7ii. The sensor readout needs to be fast in order to calculate the distance of the subject. Last I checked, Z7 sensor readout is like 1/16sec. So if your subject moves fast, your af will be off. As a comparison Z9 and Z8 sensor readout is 1/270s. I saw somewhere that the R5 readout is 1/70. This may explain why Z6/7 AF is so slow.
Very shallow content for absolute beginners who don't know practically anything about modern cameras. It would be good if the author would mention in the description that the video is for absolute beginners.
He broke.
I'm going to upgrade to the Z8 in due course. Sadly, not yet - just blew the funds on a desperate attempt to save my dog's life - and unfortunately the vet hospital was unable to save her
You have a very kind heart. The camera can wait. Thanks for sharing.
And there are still people who say the camera doesn't matter
for me canon build quality went down from 1dx bodys the r5 is very light but to much plastic nikon and sony are much better for build quality and canon knows this thats why when the release the r1 it will be like the old 1dx cameras made to last forever i use sony a7r v for pixel shift shooting only z9 for all types of photography and just sold my r5 but kept the 100 500mm until they release the r1
Good analysis Andy. Yes the R5 is quite flimsy and like a toy lol. Looking forward to seeing what the R1 will be like. I have the 100-500 too. And I love the canon 85 1.2 but mostly for people photography on that one. A good time to be a photographer now.
Great Video. Tin Man! I use a Sony A 1 and Sony 9ii
I currently use a Nikon D500 and D850. I have been watching mirrorless technology since it came out and I think it is right for me. Now I have to figure out how to afford the Z9. I have have 6 Nikon lenses so I don't want to change to another manufacturer. My hobby is wildlife photography which I love. Getting the right light and compostion is alway very interesting since the animals and locations don't always cooperate. I strive for clear backgrounds making shot even more interesting. Again I love your vidoes, learn a lot every time I watch.
100% agree re mirrorless. Great content with tons of good tips and suggestions.
Let’s do it brother! Big thanks.
I just got a Lumix G95 kit, the 4/3 lenses are half the price, the Lumix 100-300 is awesome, and it has what it takes to use your method - continuous eye tracking and a screen that flips out in all directions. Thanks for the tip for my new camera kit!!!!
Z9 and Z8 for the same reasons
Do you not use Back Button Focus?
Getting my second camera from nikon d3300 to canon eos R
Congrats!
Thanks Tin Man, enjoy your Nikon! 👏😀👍
Yay
Thank you for sharing this info. Saving money for z8.
Canon DSLR with DPAF allows you to use the rear VF with good AF. the same DPAF tech is now used in their R systems.
The eye tracking in DSLR can’t match the mirrorless so it’s difficult to change composition in real time using the LCD. I don’t use VF much so that I can have more options on angles
We need to work on what "a long long time" means. It should be more than 3 years...
Oops. I was using my shopaholic time table which is.2 years lol.
@@TinManLee More hyperbole, "a long long time ago". Please be a better teacher. Giving thoughts based on a 2 year timescale is almost malpractice, most of us can't afford to change systems that often.
@@UnconventionalReasoning before that I did use the 1dx for around 4-5 years. I have a video describing the reasoning of why I switched and a major fault on the autofocus before for super fast erratic action.
@@TinManLee So which is it? Is your shopaholic time-table 4-5 years with the 1DX or 2 years? Again, be a better teacher, please!
[I'm on a mission to have youtube photography influencers better. I've even been yelling at one of my favorites this week. The lies are going to kill photography this decade. If we can stick with more accurate comments, the interchangeable lens camera market can still grow.]
Can you explain in a video why the Canon R5 was replaced by your Nikon Z9?
I'm curious about your experience with the Z8.
I’m guessing he wanted the new Nikon z400mmf2.8 with in -built 1.4x teleconverter, with either the Z8 or Z9 is an incredible wildlife combo! Good luck! 😀👍
@@antonoat you spoke my mind ;)
The R5 is very capable and I like it. I talked about my journey on mirrorless in some of the previous videos. I originally preordered the Sony A1 but I had a two months trip to Yellowstone and I wanted to try out mirrorless and at the time R5 just came out and had stock so I got it. Then my order of A1 arrived after Yellowstone. A1 is a lot faster in focus for canon. So I was trying both system. And because I did so much purchases for the local store it it notified me I could get a z9 when it came out lol. I’m hopeless.
@@antonoat In the 90's I worked at a couple camera stores and was the Nikon specialist at one. I would always talk about how it would be cool if they could make a tc that could be flipped on or off. And always said I'd would pair it with a 400 2.8 and it would be the ultimatewildlife set-up.. And now its here! I want that 400 2.8tc SO BAD 😂
@@TinManLee can you explain how a "built in" teleconverter works? I have no clue.
THANK YOU!!
You are welcome.
Some very good pieces of advice Tin Man. I have not yet changed over to mirrorless yet. But I would like to. I am a Canon shooter and am thinking about purchasing the Canon R7 as I photograph birds.
Great to hear. I have a series of videos coming out to explain more about mirrorless as the technology is really just 2-3 years old and lots of potential. I’m not familiar with R7. Did it just come out? I have the R5 and love it.
The R7 was released in May 2022, a 32 MP crop sensor with bird/ animal eye tracking, IBIS, 15 fps mechanical/ 30 fps electronic, and R mount compatibility. I use it with the RF 100-500 for birding, and it's a spectacular combination with an effective reach of 800 mm.
@@wellingtoncrescent2480 ah I see. So it’s a crop sensor so you have higher reach.
@@TinManLee The Canon R7 came out in June 2022. It is a mirrorless camera with a 32.5mp APS-C CMOS sensor. Great for wildlife photography. It is a budget camera with some issues such as rolling shutter. But there are ways to reduce this. I have watched plenty of videos about it. It is still worth considering as it is a way to get into the mirrorless world without breaking the bank.
@@paulinefollett3099 yes. Over 30 mega pixels with a longer effective focal length seems like a great combo. I’m curious how the image quality is. The. 100-500 is very sharp. I have that lens too.
I really like your videos. But...are you sure that you are not suffering from GAS? I am asking because I do :)
I’m just in denial :)))
Gear Aquisition Syndrome is quite common around wildlife photographers…probably spread easily 😂😊
