i'm glad you brought this up. every time i see Nerdygirl on whatnot, i see lions in the chat bidding with no common sense. i would never buy from her but there's always those guys that hold such a high value of fomo. i've stopped buying from whatnot by a tremendous amount. it's all about money, man. they're all flippers lol. no such thing as "retailer" in this category. her platform is what pays her bills so i wont judge her for doing what she does. people are still gonna buy. a reality check for all of us.

The "protection" for the big sellers is their "Community" that joins their live streams. The Protection helps hype the books and talk up how awesome the seller is in the chat. It would not surprise me to find out that The Protection also bids on the seller's books. I know, I know... it's just for the social, community, and friendship and how much they love the seller. It's all honest and upfront. I get it. I understand.

If you post a book for auction and it doesn't go for what you were hoping, that's not on the buyer. If you find a gem in a dollar bin at a convention/LCS, do you tell the store his dollar bin book is worth $15 or do you add it to your pile? That's no more stealing than getting a book for an amazing price on whatnot. If you have to have a minimum on a book, then it's on you to either build the audience you need or start the price where you need it to be. There's a Buy It Now option even. I've gotten AMAZING deals, and I've paid top dollar both on Whatnot and at the convention/LCS. That's this, and any other, hobby. Don't hate on buyers because you didn't price your books according to your needs or expectations. After all, they bought it at the price you allowed. Just my thoughts.

As someone who ran quite a few Whatnot streams, you’re definitely right about the smaller streams being the sacrificial lambs. Luckily, I didn’t need the money from my books, I just wanted to clear out the PC and put it towards getting bigger books. Another issue I’ve seen is the price expectation Whatnot gives to newer buyers. They see these $100 books on eBay selling for $40 on Whatnot, and think eBay is ‘overpriced’ even if the book has consistently been selling for $100. Which I see the appeal as a collector, heck I got Hulk 340 in 9.6 signed By Todd for $250 when it was going for around $900. I’ve also paid FMV for a book that looked good one stream and was ‘near mint’ and when I got it, it had multiple defects.
I like Whatnot as a concept, but i has its flaws, and I feel like it’s impact has been mostly negative for multiple reasons.
    Great content bud.

After the fiasco with the acetate book, Gem Mint, ComicTom (was my main man). I let WhatNot go. Plus, I won a book from Skeff and he sent a heavily damaged copy and never owned it. The box it shipped was on point. That’s how I know he shipped me a damaged book. Anyhow, WhatNot is designed to part you from your hard earned dollars. That’s fine if you got it like that. But what I know is that exclusives are valuable at that moment. You are better off with cover A’s and the occasional 1:25, 50, and 100. PS: Not hating on anyone making money. Just that all money isn’t good money.
WhatNot is good for the flipper, influencer or whatever letter in the alphabet you want to call it. Plus, as mentioned…good for cleaning up your PC. Just not good for me.
In the end. WhatNot leaves a bad taste in my mouth for the future of the hobby.

Another great and informative video. Personally, I loathe Nerdy Girl and her ilk. Its all about the "side hustle" to them. It does not benefit the hobby one iota. Its about them and making the fast buck. Its not about the joy of reading and collecting funny books. I am here for the comics not this side hustle that has been a part of this hobby for years and they are the architects. The influencer needs to disappear. Take their over hyped and over blown comics with them. She and her cronies are influencers plain and simple. Sadly and unfortunately people listen to them and follow them. Again, thanks for a great video. Take care and stay well. Best\Steve

She hasn't been "in the game" for twenty years. She has been a re-seller for twenty years, but she has only been selling comics for a relatively short time. She has dabbled in shoes, cards, VHS, video games, etc. Basically, whatever is "Hot" in the moment. And she doesn't own those books in the background. They belong to her millionaire boyfriend/husband, by her own admission. And finally, just to be transparent, I have no negative opinions on her. She had to put in a lot of work to get to where she is, and I respect that. Just to clear the waters. Lol

Not taking sides in the drama, which I've followed since the C2E2 acetate, but I watched most of the discussion live and think you're misrepresenting some of what was discussed during the stream. First, Nerdy Girl didn't claim she kept a significant portion of 75 UF4 she bought. She said she kept 15 for herself and the rest were for others who weren't attending and who had asked her to buy a copy for them. After a Thoro follow up, NG admitted it was wrong for her to buy copies for people not attending and she said that she isn't doing that anymore. Regarding the back and forth about new sellers on Whatnot and being sacrificial lambs, I'm strictly a buyer/collector and I have bought on Whatnot before, and it's common sense to me that most new sellers more than likely will struggle with lower sales because they will lack the following/customer base. I thought about unloading my raw collection on WN, but I knew the lack of following and social media presence would result in my stuff going for pennies. How new sellers aren't aware that it will take time to build up an audience confounds me. And it's not on the established WN sellers to properly inform and prepare new sellers, it's on WN and on the new sellers to do their due diligence when deciding to use that platform. NG didn't deflect questions on the workings of WN, she was quite clear that WN is just a vessel for her to sell, like eBay or any other platform, and she's not involved or in the know about what goes on with WN internally. She didn't want to talk about Gem Mint and Comic Tom, and rightfully so, because that discussion wasn't about them, it was about her. Dragging them into it and speaking for them would've been wrong to do. And as was mentioned during the stream, they're free to "sit down" with Thoro like NG did and talk about these issues. As for her tone, to me, NG came across as open, pleasant, and thoughtful. I thought she and Thoro had a good discussion. And she wasn't constantly cutting off Thoro. There were times when she did, which is normal particularly in a virtual discussion, but some of the times he was rambling and, unintentionally, not giving her an opportunity to respond, which is the type of thing that results in cutting someone off.

How is she SOO successful some ask ? How? The major books she 'has' in the background are printed on a high res color printer and a 3d printer, prints out the CGC cases.... Gives others the impression she is crazy successful... Chinese 50 cent Bots 'bid' and 'chat' to expand those impressions. Just a thought :)

People use Right? at the end of a statement when they're trying to convince someone (usually themselves) of what the truth of the matter is. The truth doesn't need convincing. She might deny being an "influencer" but she doesn't get to decide how she is viewed by others. My opinion is, she not only understands this, but uses it to the best of her abilities. She hypes up WhatNot exclusives then sells these overpriced and overhyped books to her fans, while getting them for free for being a part of the WhatNot team. Bueller let that fact slip on his channel.

I watched this last night and all I can say is Thoro asked her pretty much all the questions that needed to be asked and she answered them whether all the answers sat right with us or not. If something still seems fishy after that interview, like Thoro said we all have a choice to not associate with her or Whatnot. To me people that buy and sell on there (or anywhere for that matter) should know the risks and sometimes the lesson is learned by taking an L.
I sure have taken a number of them it happens. But at the end of the day if you are easily parted with your $ by some sweet talking hype on a streaming app. Better delete that app. Same way I dont buy shoes just because the sales person tells me they look good on me is the same way Im not gonna buy a book solely based on someone telling me its the shiznit.

It sounds like your a bit disgruntled for the difficulty of selling comics. On Whatnot you don't only have to have good comics but be entertaining as well. I only done a couple of shows myself and had to learn quick on how to keep the room engaged. I'm as small as they get but still found a niche and I think the best thing that would work for you is to find your niche. The community has the right to go to her or anyone else's channel the same way they have the right to come to us. It's up to us to offer a better experience and pull attention from her and other bigger sellers.

Fair point, if you’re entertaining on Whatnot you’ll definitely find a crowd. I used to have around 20-25 people consistently and about half would be the same people just hanging out. Let’s be realistic though, acting like small streamers can pull people away from the massive streamers/RUclipsrs is like saying the local grocery store can compete with Walmart, it’s just not feasible.

@@DocLowe I have to disagree, I think the message is coming off as negative. I look at it from this perspective, of someone spent years building a brand on social media then why is it wrong for that person to attract the same following on Whatnot? The same applies on Ebay, if you're a nobody on Ebay you are going to have to take the time to build a reputation and get people comfortable buying.

    • @DocLowe
      @DocLowe 2 года назад

I don’t think anyone is disparaging them for having a big following they worked to build up. It’s more that Whatnot promotes them over others. They’re going to have plenty of people in their streams bc of that large following, there’s no need for Whatnot to push them over all the other streams.
It doesn’t really apply to eBay. You can have people follow you after they have a good interaction with you, sure, which is how it should be. eBay doesn’t outright promote certain sellers though. You can pay to have your things promoted on eBay, but that’s not the same as eBay saying, ‘hey, here’s this person, go check them out!’

I am not into the whole drama side of this hobby but I will say that when it comes to this whole influencer/Whatnot reseller deal I am not understanding all the hate directed towards certain individuals. The last time I checked I was not aware of anyone having a gun to their head to purchase any book so there is a level of personal responsibility that comes with this. It also seems asinine that people are piling on a group of Whatnot resellers for peddling certain exclusive books while missing the most obvious thing. They aren't the only ones making money off them and they weren't the ones that created them. Why isn't everyone complaining about the retailers or the con's that are originating these exclusives or to the publishers themselves who originate some of them and authorize the rest. I think everyone just needs to calm down with all the whining and start accepting some personal responsibility for your own actions. If I had been at that convention I definitely would never have purchased that acetate variant as I think it looked like garbage, but I would never begrudge anyone else from doing it if they feel the price and waiting in line was worth it to them.

Resellers like Nerdygirl and Gemmint, fools who artificially inflate valueless books for their own profit, are leading the industry towards the same crash that happened in the 1990s- unsustainable prices propped up by gimmick art and covers. Then for the app itself to be promoting those types of sellers, it’s bad news for the hobby as a whole. You are correct though that the publishers and Conventions need to be taken to task over their practices in the marketplace…. And for someone who does not like the “drama side” I think you sent in the longest comment yet. Lol.

Those Whatnot resellers can set any price they want but its the people that are paying them that money for whatever book they are selling that are inflating the price of the books. If no one is buying the book the price will drop like a box of rocks. Its those same individuals that would stand in line for that book that caused the price to go up. DO NOT start books at $1 unless you're willing to give them away for $0.50. If you aren't running key books or hot exclusives, just don't do it. Also, nobody mentions the comics that these big sellers sell that go for 50% under FMV (or less!!) y'all just focus on the few comics that go high. Yeah I don’t see her run big books at 1 start much and even if they are 80 dollar books as soon as people are getting to good of deals she cuts that off this is honesty how I would do it. The thing is these people are the scalpers of the comic world they are in it for your money nothing else easy pay days. I will say I bought a couple books from her and aside from getting her to pay attention to messages so waiting on a response one of those books I sent back because the seal bag Inside of the slab was broken she did refund me the money for it as well as the shipping so I payed one way shipping and she did as well I’m not going to lie it was a headache of a time but she did do the right thing so I can’t slam her for it.

I watched thoro interview with nerdy girl. You can tell she answered some questions but really didn't feel shame full for her actions. Like she said she a retailer so she still going to the same thing but behind closed doors. Getting the books and making her money. Bottom line I don't trust her or what not. That's my opinion. If it looks shady it probably is.

I disagree there's no difference when people sell on youtube/facebook/whatnot/ebay all these outlets have a following .This market can be manipulated. It's up to the individual to do their homework and educate themselves about comic books. I have no sympathy if someone overpaid for a book. It's pure stupidity on your behalf if you allow someone to influence you to buy something "no gun was placed on their head" do your "homework".

    Love your Channel.
I think some of the things she said were very suspect. I'll cut and paste what i commented on Thoros comments that REALLY stuck out to me that touches on what you mentioned.
14:40 "Something is worth what someone will pay for it". Under normal market conditions, yes, but she does not sale under normal market conditions. She should have ended it with "...what someone will pay for it FROM ME" Put me, with 450 WN followers and Nerdy Girl with 9.5k followers at the same con, selling the same book, at the same time, at the same starting price and tell me if that same thought process works.
41:26 NG starts to trash eBay, then abruptly stops and defends WN. Then trashes eBay again. eBay is the Godfather selling platform who has (somewhat) mastered the business. From someone who has zero contracts with WN and has zero comps from WN, NG has said ZERO negative things about WN. Very very sketchy in not wanting to bite the hand that feeds you.

She can't control the fact that some people get "star studded" by people just because they are in front of a camera on an app or on social media. If someone is willing to pay more for a book JUST to get it from her, then that is on THEM. PERIOD. She has no control over that.

@@tonyheart9306 Oh I totally agree with this and her dent heads carry a lot of blame, but her concept of a simple market quote is way off. She may as well say the FMV of this book is X, but if you buying it from me your going to add 50% to the price. She cant just ignore this fact and lead on that she's an average seller with no cult following. She an influencer whether she likes that word or not.

@@randomposter5665 Yeah, no. She has a "cult following" because she brings heat. Just like Chuck from Mile High. If you guys don't like people making their own choices to over bid from Whatnot sellers, why not attack a guy that literally TRIPLES his books in price as an asking price and demands people to pay WAY above FMV.... Again, she can't control that western society has a sit way of wanting to feel validated. They think buying something from someone that sits in front of a screen makes them special. That's on THEM, not the seller.

@@tonyheart9306 WE don't like paying 3x the book price or 75% over FMV, so that's why I for one have never bought from Chuck, nor NG.
Your definition of "heat" and mine I'm sure are two totally different things.... Acetate facsimiles are not heat.
People sit and buy from her due to the idol complex. To receive something from their demigod while she rides the worshiping all the way to the bank. These people ARE dent heads and they can get every book NG offers from someone else a lot cheaper, but they choose not to because once they get that book in the mail, these idiots will never throw away the Gemini with her return address/name on it, they will sit and stare at it, probably even smell it.
Everyone knows she uses this to profit max gains on her books and that's acceptable: SHE JUST NEED TO BE HONEST AND ADMIT IT. As well as her fan boys.

And if you can get books for a third of the cost elsewhere, then how is she ruining comics for you or any other "true collector?" Because she's not. Yes they are a detracting obnoxious segment of the hobby, but, as long as the industry keeps rewarding fools like Comictom or the reprehensible Gemmint, it’s up to good creators like you to keep us entertained on the good segments of the hobby and let those fools have their corner of filth.

Calling it a STEAL instead of a DEAL feels icky. Your buyers aren't thieves because you set the starting bid with 20 viewers like you're starting with 100. That's totally on you as a seller, start your bids appropriately.

If she has been in the game for 20+ years, she KNOWS that many of the books she is peddling will not hold their value. She also knows that she has influence and is part of the system that is creating artificial demand and hype for these books. It's undeniable. At the same time Whatnot is set up in such a way that it allows or even creates these problems. People like Nerdy Girl are just taking advantage of this exploitative system and thereby, taking advantage of buyers.
I understand that it would be harmful to her career to come on and admit to all of that. But then just don't say anything at all. Don't pretend that you're just some small time seller and all of these things are happening around and to you, but you have no role in it. Don't mistake us for fools. I will say though she does essentially say it's on the buyer and things only sell for what people will pay for it. I appreciate that, because it's true. Influencers have responsibility for sure, but buyers must also become savy.

So many things to say about this video. Why would you start an ASM 316 for $1 on your first stream? If you knew it was worth more than $48 then set your starting bit higher than $48. You losing money is nobody's fault but your own. Come on man. I've seen people that have no social media following, no youtube channels, get over 100 people in their whatnot streams because they bring top dollar key comics every sale. And yes, it takes more than just one sale to build a following.... Maybe you should have actually done a dollar start sale with.... dollar bin books.
If someone is paying major money for a garbage book, that's on them. Are you buying them? No? Then move on and buy what you like to buy.
You're an influencer because you influenced over 1,100 people that watched this video.
You seem like a decent guy that is being influenced by the drama. Don't fall into the trap. But I see you're already learning that piggy backing this drama gets you more views.
It's also funny that Thoro trash talked her for days and then decided to bring her on the show and take a different tone. Maybe he likes the more views too.
