Instructions for testing BBQ Grill Igniter module with and without internal battery and with and without button or switch for ignition gas grill electrodes.
Any barbeque ignition assembly is made of of several parts working together. When clients call us to repair a grill ignition by replacing BBQ parts we try to explain how to test the battery, test the ignitor module and test the switch or button so we only replace the grill parts necessary for the BBQ Grill ignitor to light the barbecue.

What are all of the components inside the igniter between the battery and the electrodes where the spark is emitted? I am trying to understand what is happening between the circuit getting completed and the actual spark.

just curious if it is ok to let it spark and cross itself for testing?

Yes, Of Course! This is how we test the module while isolation the electrodes and the momentary switch. When all are disconnected we can use the momentary switch/button to make the ignitor arc against itself ad then disconnect the momentary and do it again with a steel wire or paperclip. This way we test the switch for failure and if the module sparks both ways then our attention is on tot he electrodes that should be sparking.

You Think! Last week I was working on the clothes dryer and from under the drum I'm shoulder deep while trusting my colleague is only plugging it in when we're testing it as I'd been doing.
      He was not.
Clothes dryer voltage threw my dumb ass across the room!

@@bbqparts if you want a bit of payback. Get a disposeable camera. Carefully disect it keeping the flash intact. Charge the flash with a 9 volt and leave it laying around for your buddy to find. Its like monkeys on natl geo. They find something shiny they gotta fondel it. The capacitor will stay charged until some snapper head pushes the button or grabs ahold of a bare contact. Its how i kept people out of my tool boxes. Only around 300 volts. Or step it up a but with ac fan capacitors. Thry can ruin your day. I had a helper step through 3 ceilings due to him jacking with capacitors i had in my tool boxes or bags. The last time made it all worth while. I walk into the living room as both legs drop through the sheet rock. One on each side of a joist. I did like any caring friend would do i took a run and grabbed his legs and swung back and forth. The customer was gasping nearly as badly as my buddy was. Her husband fell on the floor laughing. Ahh good times. Remember that Dave?
